Second Act by Meg Napier
Mystery and romance.
Margot Johnson is retiring as a prima ballerina after one final performance. She goal has always been to go out at the top of her career. About to take her final bow at the end of the show, the dancer that died on stage is discovered as truly dead. A doctor is called to the stage but passes out as well. Detective Frank Sutton is a last minute replacement for the regular officer and finds himself on stage, investigating the death. When there are more accidents, Frank and Margot work together to figure out who is threatening the Empire Ballet Theater where everyone thought they were a family.

🎧 I alternated between an ecopy and an audiobook copy by virtual voice.
I preferred the printed copy which for me is more immersive but needed the audio while working on household tasks.

Mystery, sports, and romance combo. A police investigation. A bit of dancer history and knowledge. A blooming romance.
A story that captures your attention from the beginning.

Captivating and intriguing.

Thank you to the author for this book.

Romance, cops, murders, ballets, oh my. Of course I didn't figure out who the murderer was until almost the end and that's a good thing since it made it more interesting.

Margot (as in Fontayne--her mother was a ballet buff), on the day of her retirement from the ballet, her partner Yuri dies in her arms and noone can figure out why. Then people started getting sick and it would be determined it was something in the flowers that she presented in the last act to Yuri.

Enter Frank Sutton, one of the cops who was assigned to the ballet that night. He knows nothing about the ballet that's for sure but falls in love with Margot instantaneously. Margo then falls in love with Yuri's dog Laska who she takes in, a little fluff ball who she affectionately calls a monster.

The ending is finally tied up but not tight enough for me with Frank and Margo's relationship but I know where it was going.

I just happened to stumble upon this book in the Local Authors section of my bookstore, and I’m so glad I picked it up! This was an enthralling murder mystery with a sweet romantic side plot, and I couldn’t help but finish the whole story in two sittings. I was on the edge of my seat reading until the final reveal, and I am definitely planning to head back to my bookstore to pick up a new story from this incredible author!
