Understanding Your High Functioning Autistic Child is a book I was interested in to learn more about High Functioning Autism. I do not have a HFA child but wanted to better understand them to help the children I know.
I found whilst this book would be very reassuring to parents and covers many topics that would be of relevance it is also a lot of common sense and doesn't provide many practical tips in my opinion. Maybe I've just heard all these before though and I'm not saying it wouldn't benefit people as a book for those who've not read anything on the topic before because I think it would be great for them.
I found the most useful chapters of the book we're building friendships and looking at how to make the most of their interests. It was nice to read a bit about these and I also found the mindfulness section helpful. This is something I've been considering recently to help the children so it was nice to see some of those methods mentioned in the book.
This is a good book for parents who want reassurance but there's not a lot of practical advice for others in the child's life. I found there was too much recommendation of places/people that could help the child and not enough on being able to help children yourself. Maybe good as a read for beginners on this topic.
I find this book informative. I feel like it's a good book to start with as a first time parent and a first time parent with an autistic child. I feel like this gives me the basics with her personal touch of experience with her own son. Since it's also based on her own journey. It doesn't help in a situation when the parents are not together. And basically being raised as an only child at the moment. What needs to be done to help the child? The positives and the negatives to going back and forth between different environments?
Again, good for needing to understand the basics and then take the information to dive deeper in other books or go to a professionals.
My only issue is the use of “HFA” so much. The book gets right to helpful advice but the use of the acronym is so much that it reads like a website trying to get search ranking up. Overall though it’s a great quick read for busy parents that need the simple techniques mentioned and it was very uplifting. Thank you for writing this book.
It wasnt until my children were grown that i realized there may been some problems with high functioning autism during thier growing years. This book helped me understand better some of the challenges during that time and in later years.
I found this audible an essential resource with practical tools and guidance to help navigate life after you have received your diagnosis. Maureen is a mom and has gone through it too. Her own stories about her son and heartfelt anecdotes make the book relatable and easy to read. A must read!
Many examples of good parenting techniques. Very helpful for grandparents, too. Quite understandable and positive. Valuable insights. Read on kindle unlimited.
