Kelsea Jones is like a lot of girls at the University of Northern Minnesota. She has a boyfriend, she works at a coffee shop, and she’s on the swim team. But she’s not a girl. She’s a mermaid.

Trouble brews when star hockey player Chad Andersen takes an interest in her. She tries to avoid him, but he won’t leave her alone. A son of wealth and privilege, he takes what he wants, and he gets away with it. He wants Kelsea, she says no, and so he rapes her. Kelsea stands on a tail and two fins to fight the most painful trial of her life. Despite her trauma and a crisis of faith, she speaks the truth of what Chad did, but will she be believed?

A note from the author:
1 out of 4 college girls experiences rape or sexual assault. That breaks my heart. It’s a crime that has affected people I love, and it has to stop. This novel is my way of raising awareness and showing survivors that someone hears them.

Believed is a product of my friendship with a survivor who is an author and advocate. She opened my eyes to a world of trauma and PTSD that had been largely invisible to me before I met her, and it was life-changing. I needed to share that with others. The burden on my heart was too great to not say something, and fiction is the method I know best to convey the thoughts, truths, pains, and struggles that I see.

Sexual assault is not my story. I haven’t experienced it, I don’t live with the resulting trauma, and I do not wish to profit from the pain of survivors. This is a book for them. It’s a book for those who love them. It’s a book to encourage readers to think and to empathize and to consider the realities of so many whose lives have been affected by this crime. Wow. This book was heartbreaking but so important. This book, is a story of sexual assault, a topic that cannot be taken lightly.
In this book, a fantasy element is displayed, our main character- the victim, is a mermaid.
This book was realistic and really raised awareness on what survivors go through. We watch Kelsea, our main character, go through her experience and the aftermath- including but not limited to, the ptsd she develops, the trials she faces- emotional and literal, and the journey of healing that she takes.
In this book, Kelsea being a mermaid, has a hard time with faith because in the church she attends mermaids aren’t considered people so they aren’t considered in Gods teachings. Alongside the main story, we watch her grow in her faith. I loved that we had a Christian element to the book that was presented in a tasteful way.
I highly respect this author for not only writing this book but actively working to raise awareness for sexual assault. This is not his story but it is a story of people he loves, and he is doing all he can to help heal them and the future prevention of further incidents.
Trigger warnings of this book do include descriptive sexual assault triggers, I would recommend going into this in a prepared state of mind.

Think you won't get emotional over a fictional story about a mermaid? Think again. Emberger brilliantly captures the pain, heartache, trauma, and hard truths of sexual assault in this novel. "Believed" is going to raise awareness and give a voice to victims that have had to be silent. A compelling, unforgettable read-- Kathryn M. Inman, Author

Believed is more than just a book—it's a heartfelt offering of solidarity and support. Michael James Emberger has created something truly special, using storytelling as a powerful vehicle to raise awareness about sexual assault and, more importantly, to show what real allyship looks like. In a world where survivors often feel silenced or dismissed, this book stands as a resounding declaration: I believe you.

What makes this even more extraordinary is Emberger's generosity in making the book free of charge. This isn't about profit—it's about purpose. It’s about making sure every survivor and ally has access to a story that uplifts, empowers, and validates. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare, and it’s clear that his intentions come from a deeply compassionate place.

As someone initially hesitant about the mermaid mythical genre and cautious about how overtly religious the content might be, I was genuinely surprised—and impressed. Both elements were handled with such grace and balance that not only did they never turn me away, they actually sparked a new curiosity in me for genres I might have otherwise overlooked. Emberger weaves the magical and the spiritual together in a way that enhances, rather than detracts from, the core message.

Survivors don’t just need other survivors to speak up—we need those who have never experienced sexual violence to stand beside us, fight with us, and most importantly, believe us. Michael James Emberger is the true definition of an ally. This book is a gift, a call to action, and a beautiful testament to the power of belief.

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the BELIEVED by Michael James Emberger Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours.

At first, I couldn't really get into the story, I felt like I was missing stuff about the world. Then after a few chapters, I was hooked. I just wanted to tell Kelsea Jones that everything will be okay that there are people out there that believe her and that she isn't alone. I felt everything that she was going through, the pain and hurt. One of the biggest TW/CW is rape/sexual assault. I really want to think Michael James Emberger for letting me read and review this wonderful book.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS BOOK DISCUSSES SEXUAL ASSAULT PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION.
There’s nothing to see. I can’t move. I have no voice. I feel only fear. Fear is all there is. I am fear, and it is me.

Okay so this book I am hesitant to give a rating to because I don't think that is the most important element here. So I'm not going to rate it I'm going to give you my take on it and then let you do what you think is best from there. Before we go any further you need to know that this book is about Kelsea a 21 year old college student and mermaid who is raped by Chad a hockey player at her school. So to all the survivors out there please please read the trigger warnings or have a friend read the book for you first.
Sexual assault is a very serious topic and unfortunately the major issue that I have with this book is that the main character being a mermaid seems to detract from that importance. When I started this book I spent a lot of time very confused as to why so much effort was being put into developing this story of mermaids because so much of the plot focused on that seemed to detract from the importance of sexual assault and the impact this has on survivors and even their friends and family. Some of the plot points in the story are written for what should have been a much different novel. We have Kelsea who has been adopted by a human family and is learning things about her birth mother, we have the mermaid storyline in itself and we have an elaborate coverup by the town which all seem disconnected from focusing on Kelsea and her experiences.
All of this being said Micheal Emberger does provide moments in this book that seem encouraging and even helpful to survivors and their friends and family. If you are able to set aside the mermaid plot, Kelsea becomes a normal woman who has just experienced an incredibly traumatic experience which has repercussions for her entire life. Emberger has moments were he breaks away from the narrative he has created and shines a light on these emotional experiences. It is these moments that I find to be the most redeeming part of this novel. And in case you don't decide to read this book I want to take a moment to share them because every survivor should know someone understands:

And I’ll never forget it. It will never go away. It will never get better, and he’ll get tired of it. He’ll get tired of me. He won’t put up with me. He won’t love me. He can’t. Not now.
It changes your story, but it doesn’t change you.
No one wants to hear that getting raped leaves you with fury and rage and righteous indignation and no way to release it.
I have a friend. I have an ally. I have someone who will fight with me, and maybe that will make a difference.
The oppression of the justice system that I once thought would help me. Clearly, I was mistaken.
I won't go into anymore detail about this book because I think it is something that has to be experienced in the moment. I will tell you that it has a happy ending. I also love that author takes time at the end of the novel to address survivors and acknowledge that the events of this story are just that a story but the experience and trauma of sexual assault is very real. And not everyone has a happy ending to their stories. He stresses the importance of community for survivors. So if nothing else I encourage you to at least check out this site and learn more https://www.rainn.org/resources.

I was a Beta reader for Michael and I was skeptical... A man writing a book about sexual trauma with a Christian perspective? But he tackled a tough topic and tackled it well. Kelsea's pain is palpable and you feel the outrage she feels when nobody believes her over well-to-do Chad.
This would be a great book for those looking for healing from trauma - not just the trauma of what happened to them, but also the trauma of being taken seriously.

This book is a gut-wrenching social commentary on how we approach sexual assault and prejudice in this country, as well as the lasting effect it has on the victims. A very well written novel, mixed with a bit of fantasy, that will grip you by the soul and hold on even after the story is told.

"Believed" was my first foray into the world of audiobooks, and it certainly won't be my last. As someone who usually leans towards reading visually rather than listening, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience.

Being a non-native English speaker, I discovered that audiobooks are an incredible tool for improving diction and pronunciation by listening to native speakers read books of my choice. It's truly an effective way to enhance language skills.

Now, let's delve into the novel itself. "Believed" revolves around Kelsea Jones, a mermaid attending the University of Northern Minnesota, whose life takes a dark turn when she becomes the object of obsession for hockey star Chad Andersen. Despite her efforts to evade him, Chad's entitled behavior escalates to the point of rape. The story then follows Kelsea as she grapples with trauma, faith, and the daunting task of seeking justice by speaking out against Chad's actions. The ultimate question becomes whether others will believe her harrowing tale. With unwavering determination, Kelsea fights for justice and the truth, refusing to let her voice be silenced.

This powerful narrative was crafted to resonate with survivors of rape and sexual assault, providing them with a sense of validation and belief. It also serves as a poignant reminder of the grim reality that perpetrators often walk free while victims are subjected to shame and judgment, causing many to hide in the shadows instead of speaking out.

The novel sheds light on the disturbing truth of how money can sometimes manipulate and distort the justice system, resulting in fabricated truths being presented in court. Kelsea's struggle to share her story is met with humiliation, betrayal, and accusations of lying. Furthermore, the inclusion of Kelsea as a fictional mermaid character adds an important layer to the narrative. In "Believed," mermaids symbolize strength and resilience, emphasizing that even those considered physically strong can fall victim to inhumane acts.

"Believed" left a lasting impact on me, evoking genuine emotion and bringing tears to my eyes as I empathized with Kelsea and her struggles. While heartbreaking, the book is beautifully written, serving as a comforting reminder to those who have endured similar ordeals that they are not alone and that someone believes in them.

Special recognition goes to Kristina Rothe for her outstanding narration of the story. Throughout the audiobook, it felt as if the text was floating before me, and I was reading alongside her. I never felt lost in the narration, and Rothe's soothing voice added an extra layer of immersion to the experience.

It's not likely that I would have picked a book about sexual abuse as my latest read. But, I'm familiar with Emberger's quality writing and his uncanny ability to write from genuinely different perspectives than his own.

Right from the opening scene I was captivated by how he wove Mermaid lore into very real and traumatic situations. Through relatable characters I quickly began to challenge my own views on the topic and question how I have responded to victims of abuse until now.

This book has inspired me to action. A few months earlier, I had begun my own writing project in hopes of understanding and giving a voice to victims of abuse that I knew in my life. Having read this book, I am motivated to continue with a new level of empathy. I am thankful for this story and would certainly recommend it to those who have NOT dealt with this issue as it will open your eyes and your heart.

Believed is a book for advocacy.
A book to hold attention to sexual assault awareness. To say this isn't how women or anyone should be treated.

Told from the perspective of a mermaid (yes there's a light amount of fantasy)...is a painful, traumatic story of SA. Something women go through so often. Some of which aren't Believed.

It's a masterpiece story that depicted a semblance of actual human nature.

Please take the time to understand the struggle of women everywhere and spread awareness. People who go through this kind of trauma need you to believe when these things occur and I hope the perpetrators of such crimes are captured. Tried for their crimes.

SA HAPPENS EVERY DAY.
REASONS WHY PEOPLE FEAR WALKING HOME AT NIGHT.
REASONS WHY PARENTS CLUTCH THEIR CHILDREN TIGHTER.

This book is not one I would normally pick up to read, but I'm glad I did. It's one of the best written books I've ever read. That, in itself is impressive. As for the content, the author tackles a difficult and delicate subject in as non-threatening a manner as possible. It is evident that he is a defender and wants to see healing brought about. The heroine shows strength and courage, which hopefully, will encourage others. Some parts were hard to swallow, but I can understand why the author chose to take the direction he did with the fantasy element. Overall, great job!

I really enjoyed the idea of mermaids bring used in the story rather than humans. It showed mermaids was the injustice system to all of what the human rights stated for. For example, mermaids could be a different race, gender, culture, religion and also have a disability due to how the tail slowed them down on land.
Therefore, it applied to everyone!

I was a rape victim from my boyfriend (bf) because he wanted a baby. He used to hide my contraception pills so I missed them. I was so young and nieve then I didn't feel I could tell anybody. Most of all the police! I mean who would think your bf will rape you?
I felt like this story from the point of suvana at the end of the novel.
But also, how kalcey was raped by someone she knew. which is the case for many young people who are raped today.
This story was enjoyable and I loved everything about it. It was addictive and it saved with me when I wasn't listening to the audio.
I recommend everyone should listen or read this novel.

While this book deals with heavy issues and mental scarring, it mostly promotes the power of healing. Some wounds can never be fully healed, but with the help of loved ones, they can become manageable. I loved following Kelsea's journey because even though she's a mermaid, it is a realistic experience that many woman suffer through. This book proves to show that you are not alone, and also works to spread awareness. The issue is handled with care by the author, and becomes a heartwarming experience.

I highly recommend this book, however, ensure you are in a good mental state before reading. There are some triggering factors that could muster unpleasant memories if not prepared.

Believed

I heard of Believed through the Author, who shared a link to his website where the e-version and audio book are available for free. Although not a book that I would generally be drawn to, I decided to give it a shot, and I am so glad I did!

The story follows a young Mermaid, Kelsea, and her traumatic experience with s/a, and the unfortunate aftermath when her story is called into question. I don't want to give too much away, but I can absolutely guarantee that this book will tug at your heart and fill you with rage. The author has written this book in a way that makes it approachable and safe for the reader, while also drawing you into the life of Kelsea and how her trauma is compounded when she is blamed as the aggressor, rather than seen as the victim, deserving of empathy and love. This

story also highlights the shame and fear that survivors feel, which often leads them to stay quiet.

I think many women might look at a story of this nature written by a man and immediately put up defenses; however Michael approaches this sensitive topic with gentleness and love, the way I hope any man would with any woman who has a similar experience.

! Caution !
*This book contains mature and potentially triggering content around the topics of Sexual assault and religious discrimination/ Christian doctrine.
*This book also deals with pregnancy .
*Side character death warning .
* hospital, prison, and courtroom settings

This book means a lot to me and I have been struggling with how to review it in a way that does any Justice to the work .

Believed is an all to familiar story told with a mythological character at is heart. Our mermaid protagonist is traumatized and grieving , is harassed on a public setting , and os eventually assaulted. After all of this she is left struggling to recover and uncertain what if anything can be done when her assaulter comes from money and power .

I loved so many things about this book .

-The main character is adopted but the adoptive family is super supportive and even helps her to understand more about her bio mom’s past .

- Side characters are well developed without distancing the reader from the core plot.

- loose ends are tied up very well by the end of the story

- the story feel symmetrical ( I don’t really know how to explain without spoilers but it’s structure just really works for me )

There were things that I didn’t love about this book

- there is a line at a characters funeral about the character having accepted God before their passing and it stung. All I could think is that the path being presented here offers no comfort to the grieving who know differently of a beloved soul . It’s meant well but it just hurts.

-There is a mystery presented regarding the deaths of mermaids during childbirth that is wrapped up in a wildly speedy way . I really want to go deeper into that .

Ultimately I hope more people will read this book

It is messy in places but so are the experiences it is depicting. I think that this is a story that needs to be told and I am grateful that the author was willing to do so.

⚠️Trigger Warning: the following book contains depictions of sexual assault, abuse, and violence, in as delicate a way as possible. It is important to note that this is a book of advocacy and is AGAINST these actions, not for them.⚠️

🧜‍♀️BOOK REVIEW🧜‍♀️

Heartbreaking, but beautifully written, Believed serves as a living, breathing testimony for all who have suffered—and survived, sexual assault.

The author explored the many stages and sides of recovery: including, but not limited to flashbacks, PTSD, sensitivity, guilt, questioning why, and struggles with faith.

I really enjoyed the fact that our main character was a mermaid in a contemporary world, and the mermaids are sort of a “race” and not some mythological creature there.

This book is incredibly unique and unlike anything I’ve ever read, makes you think, makes you feel, and inspires you to make a change in the world in any way you can.

A book of fiction that deals with many delicate subjects - rape, prejudice, religion, justice. It's set around the lives of mermaids and that perhaps made the subjects easier to swallow and accept. As rape victims can struggle through triggers when reading stories such as this, having the victim be a mermaid allowed the reader to disconnect, even slightly, from their own emotions and feelings to carry on reading.
Although not truly welcome in the church, one kind minister showed her love and fought to include her, demonstrating that one person does have the power to make a difference. Jesus was brought into the story and we followed her path from doubts to believe. I feared the story would end as most sexual violence cases do - with the victim being revictimized when not believed and the (rich) rapist gets away with it. The way the story ended is not typical in reality, in my experience, but it was filled with hope and possibility of what can happen when a survivor leans into the process of telling their story and how it brings others the courage to do the same.
I was nervous to read, based on the trigger warnings, but I'm glad I did. The last part of the book, after the story had been told, the author used that time to discuss the impacts of trauma.
It was a good read!!

Ugh brotha what is this?

No but seriously, we have a pick me mermaid who for the first 5 chapters is talking about how pretty and how much everyone wants her, minutes, hrs, not even 24 hrs after her friend died. It's "woo is me my friend died." "Of course the cop thinks I'm hot I'm a mermaid." Back to "meh friend died giving birth." And the villain is named Chad because of course he is a jock.

The only thing I read was she was S.A but she doesn't have legs so what does the villain do cuts a hole to force himself in, why because she can bench more than him? Not only that the villain roped a literal starting basketball lineup to help him commit a crime not even a good one like what was the deal "hey help me tie up a mermaid and cut a hole in her and we will all get a turn?" Like what kinda cartoon logic is this.

But what upset me is how are they walking on flipper I'm just imagining a dolphin walking on it fins, plus mermaid cries pearls what is with the no tears but forced pregnancy? And a very ham fisted plot about religion. I mean is this Christian fiction is it not sentence this book to hell for making me envious that horrible S.A scene where I have to imagine cutting a hole into a side of a fish

I found aspects if this book had a mixed impact on me as a reader.

Nothing against the writers intentions.

I was in it for the mermaids, luckily there was a hefty content warning to alert me to the fact I had seriously misinterpreted the cover and it was not in fact about whether people believe in mermaids.

I kept thinking we were going to get an answer of how mermaid make babies, but it never happens. However as a narrative device to distance readers from bieng able to imagine sex, rape, childbirth and so on, its interesting.

The overall story was so centrally about trauma that I couldn't find it uplifting. I think it was intended to have a happy ending, however (without completely spoiling it)... The e trauma was kinda structurally realistic enough to be relatable, but the resolution isn't in the same way. So a reader affected by the trauma and reminded of their own might not be able to identify with the comfort of the resolution.

It might help some people understand some things about protecting each other.

Thematically it was very very USA Christian, I personally don't relate, worth considering if that's for you.

Writing style modern, consistent, accessible.

Wow, just wow. My hat is off to Michael for tackling such a hard subject. He did though, and brilliantly I might add. The emotions that Michaels words provoked in me were real. The blend of fantasy paired extremely well. I've always been a fan of mermaids, so I was extremely curious how this story would come together. Kelsea is such a relatable character, and I felt her pain. She has to go up against the word of a "Star" hockey player, knowing she might not be believed. You've got to read this book! I don't want to give any spoilers away.
One out of every six women in America are victims of attempted or completed rape. These numbers are horrific. A lot of women are scared to come forward. If you or anyone you know has experienced this please reach out to The National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673 or chat with them online.

The beginning of the story with Coral, the rape, and the immediate ramifications, was interesting, and the book was hard to put down. The court case delivered the right amount of righteous injustice, and the outpouring of support hit the right note. However, the story was so preachy I had to keep putting the book down and losing interest in everything about it.

There was so much downtime that the story was forgotten as it meandered into all churchy grounds.

I also thought the 'big reveal' at the end was painful and cheapened the story. It gave the story a moustache-twirling bad guy who was evil for the sake of being evil. That storyline added more conflict, but it could have been handled better and woven into the story more organically.

In all honesty, I drew the line at the end of the story, when the author goes on and on about how they almost got someone else to write the idea, but since the story itself was done, I considered it read.

A tale of a rape victim

This book is meant to help sexually abused victims. I was one. Mermaids live in the human world and a college mermaid is raped by a rich male student. It is her tale of agony. It is a fine piece of fiction but it doesn’t really bring to words what women truly feel. Michael tries and feels this will help victims. It is a book meant for non-victims to slightly understand what a woman goes through. I thank him for his attempt to educate the public.

This book took on a difficult subject and yet it was approached in a very sensitive manner. Somehow in the back of my mind I knew that these sorts of things happen in our world today, but this book brought it into my reality. And I understand that things do not always turn out as favorable for victims as they did in this story. It's very well written and informative.

In the middle here. The world building is creative. There is a fantasy theme and a heinous assault.

Do I feel the fantasy element took away the seriousness of the situation? Well that’s the fine line, isn’t it?

There is also a religious component throughout the book. ‘Jesus loves me.’ I suppose one can draw strength from one’s faith . But not for everyone.

I was a bit skeptical of reading a novel about sexual assault written by a male author. I mean, how could he possibly know? You know? But I am so glad I gave it a go. Emberger does a wonderfully genuine job of writing the story from a female perspective.

Believed is a heart wrenching story of a female, or more accurately, a mermaid, that has the unthinkable done to her. When a boy she attends school with won't take no for an answer, he takes away her consent.

Kelsea's pain is palpable, and when no one believes her story, her truth gets covered up, and she's labeled as a liar... you, too, feel her anger and outrage. Her emotions are so raw and the author does a great job of capturing not only this, but the many stages of recovery, as well as one struggling with their faith.
