There are things that go great together. Here it’s an easy formula: Joe Ledger + Jonathan Maberry + Ray Porter = Fantastic reads! As an extra delight this ends with a story written and narrated by Ray Porter: Mr. Church’s Day Off. Listening to this felt like coming home because I love the work of all three of these men. If you like Joe Ledger tales-this is a must read or listen.
I can’t get enough of this series. All the characters are so real and the wild scenarios they end up in keep you on the edge of your seat. Huge fan of Jonathan Mayberry. I think he must have been a real special ops soldier!
While I couldn't listen to every one of these short stories (I just didn't want some of that stuff in my head), it was fantastic to visit Joe and company at various parts along their ways. The first story was heartbreaking because I know what happens next. It was good to have some insight into that, but still, it was so sad!
The last story was wonderfully entertaining and entirely true to the Ledger series. Crazy weirdness and lots of shooting. And scifi. Yep, can't get enough of Joe.
It's always fun to be back in this world. I feel like I've read some of these before, but that didn't matter, I still enjoyed seeing what was up with Joe. With so many stories in one place they took place over a long time, it was interesting to see how Joe changed by the work he did. The last story with Mr. Church was fun, nice to see him as a real person, not who he has to be.
Maberry has enthralled from his first Joe Ledger book right up to now. Sneaking out of the black to put you down for the greater good, and gone like a phantom before your body even hits the floor. Joe Ledger has gone from Baltimore cop to Government asset to independent special forces operator. Taking the fight where ever it is needed. Exciting, thrilling, and ultra violent. Maberry is a constant master story telling. And what's more I do not like short stories unless they are incredible. These are.
I am pretty sure I haven't read this before, but I am also pretty sure that I have read the first two stories in the anthology before. That was disappointing, but the rest of the stories were really good for Joe Ledger fans. Lol, I have been listening the Limbus, Inc anthologies since I finished these. I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the stories because I am disappointed by many anthologies.
And the increasing connections to the Lovecraftian fiction world is also a plus in my opinion.
The entire book is worth it just for Ray Porter's "Mr. Church's Day Off" at the end. I love all things Mr. Church, but this is an especially great read, because it combines all of the worlds that Jonathan Maberry plays in, and it was nice to check in on those characters, even for a little time.
Some of the stories are recycled however ("Dog Days," to name one), so if you're wanting entirely new, this might be a skip; however, there's enough here to keep you going, and it was fun to reread the older stories as well.
Cannot go wrong with a Joe Ledger anthology of short stories. A great group of authors has a very unique take on the Joe Ledger universe. From the opening narrative to the very last page, this is an attention-grabbing batch of stories. Even a first-time reader of the Joe Ledger series would find this anthology very useful in understanding the history of the Joe Ledger character and universe. These authors have a firm grasp on the subject matter and make for some very entertaining reading.
Bought this ebook as part of the Eldritch Chills bundle at StoryBundle. These stories are great fun, full of action and thrills, and occasionally horror or SF elements. The text is well proofread, no typos found, and clean as far as any sex scenes. Lots of foul language, though, and of course lots of blood. The stories are engaging and varied, from a true crime type story involving human trafficking, to werewolves, aliens and all sorts of conspiracies. Well worth the read, a real page turner.
Pretty nearly great ...for what they are - an equivalent of a popcorn movie, no heavy lifting required, or even involved at all. Especially since the reader knows full well Joe's going to get through every passel of enemies the stories hurl at him, or at least get away from them, far enough to call in an airstrike. Plot armor, dont'cha know. Even so, when fate throws me a Joe Ledger book, I'll read the sucker. Once in a while, some popcorn's nice.
Jonathan Maberry's Joe Ledger series is one of the best out there. I have listened to pretty much all of them on audio which bears the statement: The narrator Ray Porter is a bad ass. He IS Joe F@cking Ledger. The stories and narration are perfect together. So damn good.
Such a great collection of short stories. As I've said before, nobody captures emotion like Maberry and that is what really makes his stories stand out. It was fun to revisit Joe and the gang at different points of the overall story arch of the series.
You have to have a strong stomach since it's a lot of horror but if you can deal with it, it's wonderful as is most of Maberry's works. I say most because I haven't yet read them all.
This one's a good starter since it's a collection of short stories. I loved them all!!!
Cannot get enough of Joe Ledger. Always ready for more. Used to be the kind of reader who thought series were redundant. Not so Joe. These are a series of short stories, all good. Not a clunker among them. If you love Joe, don't hesitate.
I am never disappointed with Jonathan Maberry and Joe Ledger. I loved the Pine Deep, Sam Hunter, and Limbus crossover. I felt that a few of the stories I had read before, but I still enjoyed the book a lot!
These are very good short stories, and I don't like short stories. Nice snippets, well read. I listened to the audio, and it was well done. Note that I remember a few of these stories from elsewhere, which was a little annoying. But they are all good.
Good collection of short stories. I enjoyed it very much. Also there is one story about Church written by Ray Porter. That was a nice add :) Recommend :)
