"Once an Outlaw, Always an Outlaw."

Southwest Colorado, 1890. One year after the oil discovery that turned it from ghost town to boom town, Cactus Poke is thriving. When the owner of the Silverstone Mining Company in Colorado proposes a business deal that would bring the railroad line to Cactus Poke, Pa eagerly accepts. Accompanied by Sadie and Clyde, he sets out on a trip to Colorado to sign the deal that will usher Cactus Poke into the next century.

But the mission quickly derails when their stagecoach is held up by a posse who take Pa for an outlaw, leaving Sadie and Clyde stranded in the Rocky Mountains. Determined to set the misunderstanding to rights, Sadie and Clyde make their way to the small mining town of Silverstone. But when they get there, the sheriff doesn’t know anything about the group of supposed lawmen who took Pa—and worse, the Silverstone Mining Company claims never to have sent the letter that started all this in the first place. When Clyde starts investigating, he discovers that he and Sadie—along with new friends and old enemies—are caught in the middle of a tangled web of outlaws, buried treasure, decades-old grudges, betrayal, and revenge.

And worst of all, the key to finding Pa and bringing a merciless band of outlaws to justice rests in the hands of a man only the truly desperate would risk trusting . . .

Did Hannah Kaye just top herself? Why yes—yes, she did.

I am a big fan of Miss Kaye’s debut Middle Grade western, GOLDWATER RIDGE, so it goes without saying that I have been greatly anticipating her sequel. Needless to say, she did not disappoint! It’s all the characters and the feelings that we loved from GOLDWATER RIDGE, but loaded with new additions that are both intriguing and hilarious by turns.

Me, the reader who almost NEVER likes a sequel, not only loved this one, but actually like it more than book one.

This has all the classic components that we crave in Westerns—stagecoach hold-ups, the thrilling promise of a railroad, shoot-outs, and bandits' treasure. But it’s far more than that. The amount of tension, the claustrophobic closed-door scenario, and the ever-unspooling mystery makes it feel more like a mystery thriller mash-up. It’s a delicious combination and it kept me glued to the pages.

I read this in two days—which is rare for me. I would have read it in one sitting if I could have managed it, believe me: this book is truly “unputdownable.” Hannah truly knows how to racket up the tension. Just when I thought I could take a breath, the scenario kept getting worse.

The vivid and utterly transportive quality of the setting only added to this book’s arresting quality. When people say the Wild West, the snowy northwest forests are often neglected. Having recently been out West during a series of blizzards, this was like old home week and I can testify that Hannah captured the location perfectly.

This book had it all. Endless excitement, amusing characters, sweet and subtle romance, thrilling stakes, and sly humor are just some of what are proving to be signature Kaye ingredients. But this is no mere flaky concoction—there is meat under that light pastry. At its core, SILVERSTONE VALLEY is a beautiful story of reconciliation, redemption, and forgiveness.

If you’re looking for a funny and exciting middle grade adventure with a whole lot of heart and a dash of Shakespeare, look no further than SILVERSTONE VALLEY.

Note: this book is best enjoyed in Pajamas under a blanket with a big mug of cowboy coffee and a six-shooter to avoid interruptions at the particularly exciting parts.

From the Author — A content advisory for parents (minor spoilers ahead):

Violence: some punching resulting in a few bloody noses; one gunshot wound, not described. Characters talk about old shootouts and robberies, and reference a house fire that resulted in the death of one character and burning of another.

Romantic content: light hand-holding, a few hugs, and one kiss on the cheek between teenaged protagonists; an implied growing romance between two adult characters. One character references a past romance that ended badly.

Language: Use throughout of light exclamations: “heck, darn, shoot, etc.” No variations on God’s name are used.

Peril: This is the big one, haha. Characters find themselves in perilous situations throughout the entire book. Danger runs the gambit from wolves to blizzards to falling off cliffs to kidnapping to avalanches. And, of course, there’s peril from outlaws. Think classic Old West danger. Some sensitive readers may struggle with the constant danger our heroes end up in.

Recommended for readers ages 8 and up.

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Wow, what a great sequel to Goldwater Ridge!

Although this story isn’t set in Goldwater Ridge, I liked having a glimpse of what the town was like + meeting the old characters again, even briefly. Silverstone Valley was an awesome little town and the new characters were epic! I felt like this story had less mystery and more adventure than book 1, but that just gave it its own distinctive feel, which was very nice. The winter setting helped. ;) The writing style was just as epic in this book as in book 1. A little less slapstick and a little more serious, with a more obvious theme, which again was delightful and helped differentiate the two books.

Sadie & Clyde were both still Sadie & Clyde, and I loved it. ;) Their little romance was more of a friendship in this book, although they both firmly declared they were future spouses, and I liked that! Sadie’s clever planning, thoughtlessness, and love of acting were just as evident as in book 1, and Clyde’s protectiveness for those he loved was wonderful, as well as his wry humour. Pa was a great character, too—wise and humorous and kind. Mrs. Wyatt was a great partner for him. Willa was the sweetest thing, but still very realistic. Ambrose was a totally unexpected and terrifying person. And finally, Duke… wow. I did not expect him, but his storyline was awesome. Oh, and I LOVE OTHELLO & ANTOINETTE. Please bring them back. PLEASE! Oh, and Jobe. I lost my heart to Jobe. Also, Mac was awesome and I loved how Kaye brought back the “sort-of-fantasy animal” thing back but totally spun it on its head!

The plot was very good. Constant twists left me quite unable to guess what would happen. The suspense kept me glued to my book. The tiny thread of romance was appreciated and sweet. I loved the “secret tunnel” and treasure map+treasure hunt trope addition, and the outlaw thread, and captured town trope… The themes, as mentioned above, were more obvious in this book. Keeping hope—staying calm—being kind no matter the pressure—trusting when you can’t see—choosing right even if it hurts because it hurts less than choosing wrong in the long run—having to face up to things eventually. They were all very good and very well done!

Overall, this was a great Christian adventure novel, very enjoyable and funny.

Content: a woman wears pants; Sadie dresses up as a boy; euphemisms; to quote the author’s review, “light hand-holding, a few hugs, and one kiss on the cheek between teenaged protagonists.”*

A Favourite Quote: “Silverstone ain’t lost[.] And you ain’t either. Not nearly. As long as hope’s alive in this town, we got a fightin’ chance. It’s like Sheriff Birmingham wrote to us yesterday: ‘Spring will come.’” Sadie smiled and squeezed my hand. “And he’s right. In fact, I think spring just got a whole lot closer. You’ve already done the impossible. You can do it again. Just have a little faith.”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: The fur was softer than I’d expected, and surprisingly pleasant to touch, despite the outer layer being wet with snow. My hand sank deep into the fur and settled on the wolf’s back. I could feel its energy, the strength in its muscles. A warm, earthy smell washed toward me from the animal, which I found strangely comforting. The wolf—and the girl, for that matter—seemed so at home on this mountain, in this snowstorm, like they were born to it.
A Favourite Humorous Quote: I’d heard stories of people in desperate straits seeing angels just when the situation was at its most dire. Maybe that’s the point I’d come to.
“Are you seeing this?” Sadie yelled at me[.] At the panic in Sadie’s voice, the apparition smiled. “Don’t be afraid,” she called.
Come to think of it, that was the line angels usually opened with, too.
She extended her hand towards me. Almost without thinking, I reached for it.
“Clyde!” Sadie shrieked. “Do not go running off into a snowstorm with a ghost!”
“Did you get a better offer?”
“No, but—” … Sadie shook her head fiercely, as if reading my thoughts. Following a mysterious girl who wandered through blizzards with a predator for a companion sounded crazy. No, it didn’t just sound crazy; it WAS crazy, no doubt about it.

Wow wow wow! I love this western world! Lol This was even better than the first book, & boy did I love that one a whole lot! Such clever writing/storytelling. Can’t say much since this is book 2, but we see a new location, & have a whole new adventure. And wow, even the adventure, danger, suspense, & plot all went next level in here! Loved it! The way they talk, & the way it’s written are still so perfect & atmospheric with just that in itself-so western! Lol Then you add the descriptive writing & you feel like you’re there with these characters. Such AMAZING characters too. Clyde & Sadie are still the best. Their dynamic & witty banter just gets better & better, & I need more of them! There’s a huge twist I didn’t see coming in here that ties to the 1st book in a way, & I loved that! We are with several favorites from book 1, but we meet some new favorites too. Mac has my entire heart & soul. Wolves are my favorite animal. And a wolf that thinks he’s a dog?! Yup! Know all about that lol Love seeing a wolf portrayed in such a great light-loyal, defender, smart, protective, brave, & part of the family. There’s also a girl we meet in here that I absolutely adore. The villain & the way it connects to things & comes full circle was epic! Loved loved loved it! There’s danger & action & suspense-yes. But there’s also the best humor, & the most amazing friendships & families. Also, has some great messages/life lessons in these too. The girl I mentioned, gives some of the best advice for life in general for example(all I can say, don’t want to spoil anything). Don’t know if there will be more, but I hope there will be MANY more. I can’t wait to see what else these crazy lovable characters get up to! HIGHLY recommend!Beautiful cover by Elise Yeomans as well!💜

The sequel to Goldwater Ridge did not disappoint! I may have liked Silverstone even better. I appreciated the variety of settings and the vivid descriptions of each. I also loved the themes of sacrifice, standing up for what is right, no matter the cost, and forgiveness. This book managed to have great depth and moving moments while at the same time being a wild western with plenty of humor and the twists, turns, and cliffhangers that are a trademark of Hannah Kaye!

I don't often read middle grade novels, but after having read Goldwater Ridge and absolutely loving it, I knew I had to read the sequel. I don't know how Hannah Kaye did it, but this one is even better than the first adventure! Sadie and Clyde are back in full force and it was wonderful! I love their friendship so much. We get to see more of Pa in this one, which I was quite happy about as he is one of my favorites. This book has everything you could want...outlaws, stagecoaches, Shakespeare, and even the tiniest bit of romance. I enjoyed every moment and I dearly hope there will be more adventures to come! Perfect for kiddos and adults alike!

I received an free ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Gah! What can I say? LOVED it! Clyde and Sadie have my whole heart and I was so happy to see none of their banter and camaraderie had been lost, in fact, it was even better, and so well done. I really enjoyed the new characters and how seamlessly, Kaye, pulled all the different threads of the plot together. Exciting, full of adventure, and packed with HEART and humour.

Cannot recommend this enough!

Hannah Kaye’s second western adventure of Sadie and Clyde did not disappoint. A fun, rollicking novel filled with plenty of twists. I also love how she includes Shakespearean lit into her western adventures!
