Gate Ghosts #2

Clone Crisis

Rate this book
The Sisterhood’s dangerous militarist sect finds a foothold in a broad swath of space inhabited by the descendants of Earth’s fourth colony ship, Destiny. They’re welcomed by the mining corporations, whose leaders see unbridled opportunity in the sisters’ advanced tech.

Five powerful corporations own six mining planets. One company, CenGas, mines Delhart, an ice-covered body, and struggles against the planet’s natural challenges to deliver timely orders to the other companies.

As the rim’s major source of water ice and frozen gases, Delhart is ripe for a takeover. Rather than a financial offer to CenGas, the four chairpersons contemplate an armed assault on the planet.

CenGas is in dire need of allies, and the company’s chairwoman turns to the SADEs, who are viewed negatively by Naiad authorities. She offers her planet as a base from which the SADEs can challenge the sisters’ growing numbers.

In return for the chairwoman’s offer, the SADEs are requested to defend Delhart. She’s unaware that they won’t harm humans. To facilitate the planet’s defense, the SADEs provide inventive new tech to three humans, who volunteer to defend Delhart’s critical resource, ice harvesters, against the inbound threat.

The SADEs’ efforts are divided between resisting the militarists’ encroachment and dealing with Naiad’s opposition to their presence. As for the sisters, Peña, a first gen sister, chooses not to dominate the local citizenry. For that, she’s considered a traitor and, in all likelihood, will be harshly punished for abandoning her sect.

From my early years to the present, books have been a refuge. They’ve fueled my imagination. I’ve traveled to faraway places and met aliens with Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, Herbert, and Le Guin. I’ve explored historical events with Michener and Clavell, and I played spy with Ludlum and Fleming.

There’s no doubt that the early sci-fi masters influenced the writing of my first two series, The Silver Ships and Pyreans. I crafted my stories to give readers intimate views of my characters, who wrestle with the challenges of living in space and inhabiting alien worlds.

Life is rarely easy for these characters, who encounter aliens and calamities, but they persist and flourish. I revel in examining humankind’s will to survive. Not everyone plays fair or exhibits concern for other beings, but that’s another aspect of humans and aliens that I investigate.

My stories offer hope for humans today about what they might accomplish tomorrow far from our home world. Throughout my books, humans exhibit a will to persevere, without detriment to the vast majority of others.

Readers have been generous with their comments, which they’ve left on Amazon and Goodreads for others to review. I truly enjoy what I do, and I’m pleased to read how my stories have positively affected many readers’ lives.

If you’ve read my books, please consider posting a review on Amazon and Goodreads for every book, even a short one. Reviews attract other readers and are a great help to indie authors, such as me.

The Silver Ships novels have reached Amazon’s coveted #1 and #2 Best-Selling Sci-Fi book, multiple times, in the science fiction categories of first contact, space opera, and alien invasion.

I enjoy reading S. H. Jucha books. I have read all the Silver Ships Series and now am working on the other related series. “Clone Crisis” is book number two of the Gate Ghost Series. So far, I have been captivated by the intrigue and problems of each of the groups. I am starting to figure out the various characters and which ones I am becoming a fan of. I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. Nicole Poole does a good job narrating the book. I still miss Grover Gardner as the narrator.

I really struggled to get into this book. It might have been because I thought the latter part of the previous book was a bit ‘messy’ and it took me a while to sort out all the different characters and intrigues. However once I got into the story it did get better.

My main problem was I had severe doubts about 'the Sisters' when they first appeared in the Silver Ships books and I find my aversion to the concept has only grown in these books. Even though there is a split in their ranks I could find no empathy for 'the Sisters' and wasn’t interested in what they were doing.

There were parts of the book I really liked, interspersed with sections I found boring or just irritating. I didn’t think this bit of the author’s ‘Universe’ held together as well as it did with the Silver Ships and Pyreans books.
I know the author was trying to portray a ‘broken’ system with hopeless rulers and given politicians such as Trump and Johnson this is perfectly reasonable, but it did feel like it was populated by a myriad of caricatures. Overall I thought the story was probably just OK, so I really couldn’t give more than two stars.

Thought provoking in the best way.

Like the title of this review, this book, as are all of the books in the three series based in this universe are imaginative and provokes thought into how you view the world and space around you and the fellow species in it.
I've never been happier to consider myself an avid fan of science fiction, especially space fiction, as when I'm reading a book in this universe by S. H. Jucha.
To Mr. Jucha: Thank you for another wonderful story and the continuation of this story that started with Silver Ships. I've read hundreds of space science fiction novels but yours are my favorite. They make me feel like a better person just by reading them and agreeing with the sentiments of the SADES, and their friends.

This is the second installment of S. Hl Jucha's GATE GHOSTS series which describes the activities of the SADES (Self Aware Digital Entities) from his SILVER SHIPS books, projected several centuries into the future. Human clones have been essentially regarded as "throw-away" resources and deprived of medical care and proper living conditions. Escher, Ceda, Allie, Gat'r, and Bethany, with the assistance of "Z", Miranda, and several other SADES get involved in a program to free the clones from their predicament. This involves a lot of wheeling and dealing, and coping with a splinter group of SADES, called the Sisters, who want to dominate all biologicals, regardless of their origin.

Another great book about the adventures of the SADE's. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with two groups of SADE's going against each other. The "sisters" against the original Sade's. One thing that came out at/near the end of the book is that this story takes place about 350 years after the "militarist" sisters left the other SADE's and Alex Racine. One problem I had reading this book was the large number of characters. It was difficult at times to tell who was who. But I thoroughly enjoyed the book

Prose be damned

I love these stories! I love the character personality and depth. The storyline is great, except for how the silver ships series ended, short and rather abrupt. But I don’t like the use of what I would will call the Bill O’Reilly word of the day references, such as reposted, or opined. When I am reading and come across one of these words, all I can hear is fingernails on a chalkboard! I don’t feel these words fit with these stories, period. I would give this series a full 4 stars except for this abuse of prose.

I won't belabour my objections to the series - which still stand - assuming anyone that has progressed to book 2 in the series (and many, many more, in the universe) is either unconcerned or afflicted with the same completionist malady as I. Instead, I will credit the story as being more engaging in the second instalment.

That said, I'm being charitable, it's still terribly written in places and contains dangerously flawed premises.

Always good

Wow that ending just came up so fast I wasn't expecting it! As always it leaves you wanting more. I find it very interesting to watch the progression of the sisters and the different directions they are taking. It will be fun observing how the humans and clones change too when they start to see what is happening outside of their own areas.

keeps getting better!

Second in this series and it only gets better. Love the sisters under Peña and cannot wait for the development of the clones. Miriamal is as difficult as ever and Theda is a development in the sisters that is particularly scary!

Great read

Great characters (from the Silver Ship series) that are true to their beliefs. Greedy corrupt and criminal corporations, illegal clone labor, naive populations, misguided digital entities and weak and corrupt politicians and justice make this a great series.

Excellent novel and series.

The words just jump off the page and you are totally engrossed in the story. This story has it all, clones, humans on new planets and sentient artificial life forms. There is intrigue, corruption and those who seek truth and justice.

I enjoyed Axis Crossing a lot, and was excited to hear the story continue in Clone Crisis. Although it was an interesting read, it also felt like nothing really happened. I also felt like the setup for a clone crisis didn't occur until the book was almost over. I hope we get more from Race Rivalry.

Surprisingly boring

I've read all the previous silver ships books and they can have their dry areas, but this book was all board room meetings and business discussions. I can't say that I'll continue the series any further.

Worthy successor to The Silver Ships Series

Looking forward to the next book. Fate of militarist faction of the sisterhood. Approximately 600 years after Alex's star sevices.

Great read. Not a bang-bang-shoot-em-up like like so many other current sci-fi authors are pushing out. I sure hope a book 3 comes out!
