The Distraction

Rate this book
The last thing he needs is a distraction.

Hunter Hutchin’s success is due to one thing, and one thing only: his unerring focus on Beaten Path, the outdoor recreation company he built from the ground up after his first business was an utter failure.

When his dad gets sick, Hunter is forced to go back to his hometown and prove once and for all that his father’s belief in him wasn’t for nothing. With illness looming, distractions are unacceptable.

Staying with his sister, he meets Hannah, the sexy nanny who has had his head in a frenzy since they met.

When Hunter’s dad gets sick, he’s forced to leave the city and move back into the small town he grew up in at his sister’s house. Ever since he watched Hannah dance into his life, he’s finding himself drifting from his goals and purpose - or is he drifting closer to them?

She refuses to make the same mistakes as her mother.

Hannah Keller grew up watching what happens when a family falls apart and lived through those consequences. When it’s time, she won’t make the same mistake by settling for anyone.

But when the uncle of the kids she nannies comes to stay for the summer, she can’t help but find herself drawn to the handsome, standoffish man who is definitely not for her.

Can she get through the summer while protecting her heart? Or will he breakthrough and leave her broken?

The Distraction is a contemporary forced proximity/grumpy sunshine romance. It's book one in the Springbrook Hills series but can be read as a standalone.

It is a full-length romance with a Happily Ever After that features sexually explicit material and profanity. This book is intended for 18+

Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.

Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Her entire life she’s crafted stories in her mind, begging to be released but it wasn’t until recently she finally gave them the reigns.

I’m so grateful you’ve agreed to take this journey with me.

This was just dragging unnecessarily. It was an okay story I guess, I liked the h, the H was okay but the plot was Mediocre.
What I hated was the unnecessary title references. Like once or twice is fine but this author mentions this title like god knows how many times. 🙄 Anyways I will not read the next book unfortunately.

Okay, I have to say that this book had a decent plot and development, but there were just a few things that just really DISTRACT from my reading experience.

My biggest complaint about this book? Editing issues!! There were random punctuation errors throughout. There was also a mention of “pizza nits”, which I had to read and reread to realize that she meant to write “pizza sits” in the context of that sentence. The last major annoyance to me was that there was a typo that changed “Sara” to “Sarah”. Like, at least the editing team should’ve made sure that character names were consistent throughout.

My other real issue with this book was I felt like Hunter was a maaaaajor douche canoe to Hannah (on multiple occasions), and was forgiven SO easily! I understand it in the context of Hannah’s childhood, but I can’t help but feel like Hunter is taking advantage of Hannah’s want/need for love, family, and children. I appreciated that he put his money where his mouth was at the end, but damn! He was an ASSHOLE.

Overall, it was an easy book to read with not many plot complexities to keep track of for this reader. I just REALLY wish the author’s beta/editing team would have caught the many errors!

So I read Tis the Season for Revenge (with Hannah's younger sister, Abbie, and her love interest) before any of the other Springbook Hills books because I had no idea they were a series. I thought this was a cute small-town romance book about Hunter, who is the focused CEO from the big city, having to move back to his small-town where he meets Hannah, his nieces' nanny!

I really like Hannah! She is such a genuinely kind and great person that it's probably nearly impossible to dislike her. Someone with her childhood has every reason to be an absolute menace to society, but she is basically an angel. She gives so much love, especially to the children in Springbook Hills, and it's genuinely so heartwarming. She embodies what a young child would draw as her ideal imaginary friend or guardian angel. I will say that I wish Hannah had had a more transformative journey. I know she did somewhat, but I wish there had been a bit more from her! She seemed overall pretty static throughout the book.

For Hunter, I genuinely wanted to reach into the book and smack him upside the head a couple times. He had such a fundamental misunderstanding of what his father was expecting from him that was such a huge road block for him in every aspect of his life. It's so easy to see that happening all the time, though, so he seemed so real. He genuinely was trying his very best to do what he thought was necessary to make his father proud of him... And honestly, who can really fault him for wanting to do that? I wish we could have seen a more gradual change in him throughout the book instead of the 180 degrees whip-lash that we got.

I really loved all the supporting characters in this book! I know there are several more books in the Springbook Hills universe, so I am excited to see some of the same characters make more appearances. All the ladies in the book are absolutely amazing. I loved the friendship and almost sisterhood that Hannah had with Autumn and Sadie. The quote about Sadie being born so close to Hannah because since they weren't sisters, they had to best friends? I loved that. Maggie is such an amazing grandmother-figure. She treats Hannah as her own and it is so heartwarming! Obviously, I loved Rosie and Sara. How could you not? They really love Hannah so much and vice versa - It was adorable to read. Steve didn't play a big role either, but the role that he did play was spectacular. I liked that he seemed to always know what was going on, but only stepped in when necessary. Although Tanner and Tony didn't really play big roles in this book, I know they're the main characters in their own stories, so I am excited to learn more about them! I absolutely loved the part that Ron played, too. He seems like such a loving father who just truly wants the very best for his kids!

I think Hannah and Hunter are interesting together. I found it really odd that even though they weren't committing to each other or calling it anything serious, he introduced himself as "her man" and did a whole lot of things that were pretty committed relationship actions. I'm sure that was on purpose to make it clear that the only people they were fooling were themselves... And even then, not really. Not to mention that they both picked each other to be first ones to share their special sanctuaries with right from the beginning. I also genuinely did not appreciate some of the hurtful things that he said to her and would just apologize for. I understand that he was upset and stressed, but she seemed to just forgive him without much of a deeper discussion. I wasn't sure how their relationship was going to progress, but I feel like they got to something beautiful together!

Even though I've only read two of Morgan Elizabeth's books, I'm sensing a pattern for the relationships in them. First, there has got to be really well-done ~spicy~ scenes. Second, in those many ~spicy~ scenes, their is amazing dirty talk that really makes you need to take a deep breathe before you keep reading. Both of these are things were present and very enjoyed in Hunter and Hannah's relationship!

P.S. Read the bonus scene if you haven't!

This was maybe one of the worst books I’ve ever read simply because it started out & showed so much potential to be good and then just….Wasn’t.
Most of the time, he reminders me a little of Ryle from it ends with us (except not physical) in the way one minute he was so loving & the next he was so verbally and emotionally abusive.
He was whiney & immature & Hannah spoke the whole time of not wanting to settle, but that’s exactly what she did. She was so desperate she took him back like nothing ever happened.

I also hate when books do a COMPLETE 150 flip. Like, there’s growth, and then there’s unrealistic expectations. The whole time, she wanted a commitment & he just wanted a fling. Then once they broke up & he “came around” he’s suddenly all “i wanna marry you and be with you forever” and she’s both “this is what i want to hear” and “but it’s making me anxious”.

There are so many things that didn’t line up & that the plot didn’t work together or contradicted itself. I almost DNF this book a million times, but i just convinced myself it would get better…boy was i wrong. I would’ve LOVED to see how well this coulda been done, but really i was just disappointed.

This was such a great read! I loved "Walking Red Flag" and really enjoyed "The Ex-Files" but I was disappointed in "Bittersweet" and so, a bit hesitant to start this one — but I'm so glad I did. Elizabeth imagines up an enjoyable and lively cast of characters for this series and leaves you wanting more.

Hannah and Hunter were characters you just couldn't help but root for, even if things were a bit messy between at times. It's so nice to see a female main character whose so invested in becoming a mother (something which usually only comes up in the epilogue...) especially because I really relate to it. Hunter is a hero to die for, he's such a sweetheart (there were so many endearments in this book!! I'm obsessed) and always ready to apologize for any of the mistakes he makes which was so great to see.

During the third act breakup he did go a bit far imo, there's a trope involved which I just hate, but he did make up for it in the end and there was acknowledgement that excuses don't automatically make the other person trust you again but he's definitely putting in the work.

That's my only criticism, which is why this is a 4.75 and not a 5 for me, but it was handled well in the situation and other than that I absolutely love and adore this book 😍

Spoilers ahead

I'm not leaving my usual long detailed review because I'm bitterly disappointed. I've read 2 books by this author and while her h's tend to make me want to bang my head against a wall she has some of the best, most loyal and committed Heroes I've read in a while. The type of guys who break their backs to give their women all they can in this world.....and then there's Hunter
Hunter who's mouth was his downfall
Hunter who said dumb shit and made the h feel.bad, he apologised, all's forgiven
Hunter, who didn't learn his lesson, says some hurtful shit, he apologised, all's forgiven
Hunter who said some truly horrible and hurtful things to the h and is once again easily forgiven
I hate him
Hate him
Hate him
Hate him
Words are powerful you cocky lily livered asshole, cowardly little bitch only lashing out at Hannah and using the stuff happening in his life as an excuse!!! That's what abusers do you manipulative shithead
Gahhhhh
I hate him😭
I read the book with Abbie who was Hannah's sister and wanted to read her story now i.just want to shove some steel up her back just to shore her spine up because she's just weak 😭

Clearly I need to do better research before reading more from this author

No cheating
H made a bad choice in his early twenties and hasn't had a real relationship since. He's dated though
h is the nanny of his nieces, the perfect little spinless Mary Sue. Not a virgin
No OW drama
Very slight OM

This was not good.
I loved, loved Tis the Season for Revenge so I was really looking forward to catch up with Morgan's backlog - this is her debut novel and sadly, you can really tell. The writing is less fluid, cheesy af and there's a clear absence of editing: sentences that don't make sense (i'm not from an english speaking country, but I think my level is quite good, tho), periods that should have been commas and vice versa. The fact that I noticed just speaks to the amount of small shit like this that there was in the book. And then you notice once, you'll notice them all.

For the story in itself, there's nothing too innovative in it, but sometimes we thrive for knowing what we are going to get, so that's ok.
The characters - i would have liked if Hannah (our h) would have had other personality traits than liking children. I swear she's better developed in Tis the Season for Revenge, where she's a side character than in her own book. Hunter was ok, but his motivations made little sense to me, but what do i know? (:

Anyway - a bust, sadly. HOWEVER, if you've read Tis the Season for Revenge thanks to TikTok like i did, it is clear that Morgan improves (cofa lotcof), so i will probably pick up the rest of the series.

At the same time, she did what a lot of us don't have the guts to do and that's to write a damn book and put herself out there, so kudos for her... But, yeah. Good editing, even at a debut novel, is achievable...

Loved these characters and the overall story but man oh man there were some blatant editing mistakes that just took away from the story enough to annoy me. Will definitely be reading the other books in this series and just hoping not to come across as many issues.

This is a new author to me and I’m normally not that bold but… the book and the author are really good, still, I can’t give it more than three stars because honestly, h is too good for H, he is very nasty with her, like a lot!, he said some things that wooooowwww… 🤮
If there’s something I can’t stand is a shitty grovel and then boooom, sex again like H didn’t broke you… It seems so unrealistic to me… after so much hurt… even the H said that h looked empty, hollow, pale… I hate this, the pity from a man…
Like Rihanna said: just pretend girl!
I wish after the break up, she’d just left… she deserved a better man,
The sex scenes are really good but in this book I just skimmed them because I hate him 🫠so muuuuccchhh,
The offense is louder than the apology

This was so much fun to read. I had a permanent smile on my face!

When successful CEO Hunter Hutchins comes back to his hometown to watch over a new project, the last thing he expects is to see a gorgeous woman singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of her lungs with his two nieces in his sisters kitchen.
He can’t afford any distractions, but the one in the form of his sisters nanny, Hannah Keller, is one that’s too hard to resist.

This book swept me away, it was fun, cute and so hot!
Hannah, had a rough upbringing and my heart ached for her. But the way she channels that into her passions in helping the community and the children within it was admirable! She was a total badass who deserves everything!
Hunter was swoon worthy and he had such a dirty mouth that I loved! Learning the reasons behind why he’s so adamant about not having any distractions in the form of a woman, made me so sad for him. All the burdens he’s been carrying around just made me love him so much more! Although I did get frustrated with him at moments, but he did some pretty good grovelling to kind of make up for it!

I loved the side characters, I loved seeing Hannah’s friendship with Hunter’s sister Autumn, her husband Steve and their kids. And also how much she was a part of that family despite whether she was with Hunter or not!

Honestly just can’t recommend this enough!

“Damn straight,” Autumn says, looking me dead in the eye. “You fuck this up, I’ll fuck you up.”

Hunter needed to focus on work and getting his first failed project off the ground. He’ll stop at nothing to prove himself. Being back home brings him closer to his family and his sick father, but distractions are not possible. Staying with his sister, her husband, two kids and her nanny.

Hannah is smart and sexy and everything he doesn’t need distracting him. Yet he finds himself drifting from tasks and closer to Hannah.

Hannah refuses to make the same mistakes her mother made, growing up with a broken family and the heartbreak that brings. She won’t settle for anyone. Even if she’s drawn to the uncle of the kids she’s nannying for the summer.

There’s nothing harmful in a little summer fling right? But when feelings get involved everything changes. This grumpy sunshine romance is the first book in the Springbrook Hill series and is for mature readers.

Grumpy Sunshine, small town, brother and the nanny, and did I mention it’s spicy! I love Elizabeth's writing and the realest characters she develops. I’m exciting to continue this series and see how the next book ties in.

What the hell? What the helly? What the helleyonce??? Hunter is a real Man’s man: afraid of commitment, arrogant, and generally kind of a dick. The amount of times I wanted to throw my hypothetical book (I did audio) against the wall. If I had to hear him refer to Hannah as a “distraction” one more time. Okokayyyy, it’s not lost of me that it was the title of the book, but men really be doing the least to piss me off in real life, I have zero tolerance to take any of of that BS in a fictional world.

And Hannah? Emotionally damaged, mostly spineless, people pleaser. Due to her rough childhood Hannah dreams of having kids and being a good parent someday—this story line ain’t for me. The way Hunter treated her with the weird casual gaslighting trigged my anxious attachment. And then poof, he realizes he a fucking idiot and decides to be in love? Naaahhhhhhh

Okay this book was so so good!! I absolutely loved the entire storyline. Hannah and Hunter were just 🤌🏽. Both their background stories actually made sense and I enjoyed the little bit of suffering we went to get to where they ended up.

This book would be a full five stars but the grammatical errors were just too much for me. I couldn’t get past that. Commas where there should be periods and lowercase letters when it should be upper case. 😵‍💫

Other than that, this book was exactly what I’ve been craving. Plus it was extra spicy. 🥵

So I didn’t finish this book but got more than halfway before stopping so I’m counting it for the trauma it’s caused me. I don’t think I’ve ever dnf’ed a book this far in. But what really got me was when he called her ugly names and said horrible things and then put her on the counter and did naughty things to her to make up for it while there were lots of small children upstairs. That was the breaking point for me. Goodbye

I read this book in a day, so you know I enjoyed the storyline. It was cute and dealt with issues that are hard. I liked Hannah's character because I used to be a nanny and understood her feelings about being a nanny for the family. I thought Hunter and her made a cute couple but I really wish he'd cut his hair and trim his beard into a five o'clock shadow 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
