Red: The Wolves Must Die

Rate this book
She's a demon hunter with a pack of wolves to bring down. He's her high school, human tutor who sees more than he should. Both outcasts amongst their peers, they just might be perfect for one another.

Artemis Ray hasn't gone to high school a day in her life—but when a pack of demons in the form of wolves descend on the sleepy town of Carmine, New York, and start taking human sacrifices from the local high school, she's assigned her first real hunting mission—one perfectly suited to her. And she's ready for it and the initiation completing it will bring to her life: she'll become a full-fledged demon hunter.

She has a plan: get in, act as bait, kill the wolves, get out. With her dad/demonology teacher, and her team, she's sure they can accomplish this before Halloween. But enrolling in high school is not as easy as she thought. She has teachers who expect her to show up, listen in class, and do homework. And to ensure she does, her science teacher assigns his TA, Leonardo Thomas Kincaid, to tutor her. She knows his whole name because Leo introduced himself. With all. Three. Names. He takes his tutoring way too seriously, and won't leave her alone until she's studied and done her homework. Ugh.

It makes hunting the wolves impossible! But he's smart for a human, he makes plans and has hobbies, and dreams that take her breath away—endless possibilities for his future when all she's had is one. One path. One way. One future.

He intrigues her—and that fact has nothing to do with him being easy on the eyes . . . in a super nerdy sort of way. He's a distraction—an exciting one.

Especially when she finds out one of his hobbies is studying the wolves.

Tom Kincaid is used to being alone. His parents died in a car accident three years before, he's been in and out of different foster homes ever since, and being a nerdy, lanky boy with glasses in high school with the first name "Leonardo" during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle era hasn't exactly made him lots of friends--not that he wants them. All his obsessions don't help his cause either.

Like now: he's studying a local legend that keeps the townsfolk from even looking at the color red during October, let alone wearing it—and embracing the ages-old grandma smell of rose oil. So weird. Then she shows up—red hair, red hoodie, named Red—or so she says. She's a breath of fresh "I don't give a fig" air with a presence that dares you to look away—but he can't.

Red's familial bond is everything he wishes he could have, her hobbies include LARPing (surprisingly) and "hunting" (her words—also really?), her spare time is used to practice throwing axes in her backyard with her grandma, dad, and brothers, and her nights are spent wandering the woods where a vicious pack of wolves has been killing folks—teen folks in red, to be exact. The ones who take the dares, put on red, and walk into the woods like some bravery test that gets them killed every time. Lambs to the slaughter.

Idiots.

Tom knows because he spends his nights in the woods, in all black and armed with a baseball bat and, ahem, rose oil, studying the wolves. He's strewn clothes from Goodwill all over the forest in a plethora of colors, but it's only the red ones that go missing—that get taken by the wolves. And Red knows it. He knows she does because he saw her out there dressed like a warrior princess carrying an ax. It was hot.

He's not leaving her alone until he gets answers. And maybe, if he's lucky, a kiss or two.

A Little Red Riding Hood Fairytale YA retelling with a paranormal twist and 90s nostalgic humor you won't want to miss!

Red: The Wolves Must Die by Emily Clark.
Her life was never her own. Then the wolves descended. Artemis Ray has only ever had one path. One way. One future. And she liked it that way. There’s a form of safety in a life without choices. She knows what her purpose is. Who she’s going to marry. And what she’ll become. A hunter. And she loves to hunt. All she has to do is pass her final test and bring down a pack of lupi, demon werewolf-like creatures, using the sleepy town of Carmine, NY, as their hunting grounds. She knows what she has to do, she’s ready for it, and the future it’ll bring, that is until she meets Leo Kincaid. Leo is unlike anyone she’s ever met. He’s smart for a human. He has no set path, no one way, only dozens of interests, hobbies, and dreams for his future that take Artemis’s breath away. He’s a world of possibilities in a person. A breath of fresh air nudging her toward a different kind of life. A life away from everything she’s ever known. A life with him. But when her hunt takes a chilling turn, Artemis will be forced to choose between the life of safety she’s always known or an unknown future of dangerous possibilities.
I really really enjoyed this book. I loved Artemis and Leo. They were my favourite characters. 4*.

Such a fun read

This has so many of my favorites--magic, adventure, romance, humor, a strong, confident, warrior woman, and a brilliant, nerdy guy who is smart enough to really appreciate her.

The story manages to hit all those great notes without feeling cliche, and despite the fun, light-hearted tone, there's some underlying sophistication that make me think I'd like to keep reading in this world.

A few copy editing issues distracted me from the story from time to time, or this would definitely have been a five star book for me. Even with the typos, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone who likes contemporary fantasy (and particularly for people who liked the Twilight series)

Leo and Red . . .

I enjoy reading retellings of a fairy tale to see how the author can twist it into something new while it remains vaguely familiar. In this story, our “Red”, Artemis Ray, is a demon hunter. A pack of demons in wolf form take sacrifices from the high school, and Red is sent on her first big hunting mission. But she has been assigned a tutor for her school work, a human named Leonardo Thomas Kincaid (“Leo”). He really takes his job seriously, insisting that she study and complete her homework before he will let her go. That makes hunting these wolves almost impossible! But he is intriguing and exciting, a very pleasant distraction. And he’s interested in wolves. He is having an effect on her… would she consider a change of plans and maybe spend her life with him?

This is your typical feel-good YA fantasy read. Artemis belongs to a family of hunters. She is committed to her legacy even when she was promised to be married to Sam by her mother who is now dead. Destiny had a different fate for Artemis when she moves to the town of Carmine. She meets a handsome guy, Leonardo Kincaid or Leo. He is anemic and takes iron pills to feel oxygenated. This deficiency ends up helping him later in dealing with an unfortunate event.
The story progresses steadily without a dull moment. There are many thrilling happenings - animal attacks in the wild, wolf's alpha being killed, and thirteen unexplained deaths etc. All in all, it was a captivating read. Highly recommended for young readers.

Red: The Wolves Must Die, the first book in the Wolves Must Die series, tells the story of Artemis Ray, who is training to be a demon hunter in the Arcanian army. Artemis and her family travel to Carmine, New York, to hunt a pack of lupi, a werewolf-like creature that infects its victims through bites, rather than possession. The story is set in the late 1990s and uses details like the popularity of boy bands and the prevalence of dial-up internet to set the scene. Readers who grew up in that era will enjoy reminiscing about the pop culture references sprinkled throughout the book. The author also includes a helpful slang glossary in the backmatter to define terms like "fly" or "home skillet" that might be unfamiliar to contemporary readers.

While preparing for their mission to hunt the lupi, Artemis and her family stay at her grandmother's cottage. Her grandmother, a seasoned hunter herself, gives Artemis some sage advice. She tells Artemis that life is too short to not tell those you love that you love them. This advice becomes particularly relevant as Artemis navigates her feelings for her betrothed, Sam, and a human boy named Leo. Artemis meets Leo when she enrolls in his Earth science class at Carmine High, as part of her cover story. Leo quickly becomes a source of interest for Artemis, though he does irritate her with his talkative nature and insistence on helping her find a hobby. Artemis also becomes intrigued by Leo's "idea notebook" filled with the things he wants to try. Unbeknownst to Artemis, Leo is a budding scientist with a fascination with the supernatural. Leo is conducting research on a pack of wolves that he believes are behaving strangely. After Artemis is rude to him, Leo follows Artemis into the woods in the hopes of seeing the wolves for himself. He soon discovers that the wolves he has been studying are actually lupi. Artemis and Leo must then team up to defeat the lupi and save their town.

The book has a strong female protagonist who is skilled, strong-willed, and independent. The romance between Artemis and Leo is sweet and slow-burning, with a lot of banter and witty dialogue. Red is a fast-paced read that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. The book is well-written, with vivid descriptions and realistic characters. The plot is well-developed, with several twists and turns that will keep you guessing.

Fans of supernatural thrillers and coming-of-age stories will enjoy this book.
Overall, this is a fun, entertaining read with a unique premise. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys werewolf stories, strong female leads, and a touch of romance.

A different take on the classic Red Riding Hood story, we meet Artemis Ray (Red) a demon hunter in training whose final task is a pack of demon-infected wolves attaching high schoolers in a sleepy town in New York. Being 17, Artemis wants to find the pack and destroy them all before Halloween (her 18th birthday) in order to become a full-fledged demon hunter. With the help of her dad, grandmother, two older brothers and her betrothed who are all also hunters, Artemis plans for this to be an easy task, until she meets Leo.

Leo is a high school student and TA who is assigned to Artemis to tutor her when she's enlisted into the high school mid semester. There's something about Artemis that has Leo hooked beyond her bright red hair and no nonsense attitude. Together can they figure out what's going on with the wolves and stop them?

This is definitely a young, young adult book with the majority of the characters being 17-23. The story is supposed to take place back in the 90's which for those of us who lived it you'll pick up on the movie/music references and fashion statements. What I couldn't really get past was that the MFC was only 17 but was betrothed and didn't really have the personality to match it. I think if this had been set in a college scene instead of high school it would have made more sense, but the story was still very captivating. I was constantly on my toes wanting to know what was next, who the wolves were and how this story would end. I'm slightly sad that this story won't continue as I really did enjoy the characters themselves and I enjoyed Emily Clark's writing style.

This book feels like it is for a specific set of reader that manages to loves 90's and YA. I do generally like both but unfortunately I didn't connect with this book.

I was around the same age as the characters in the 90's but something didn't quite hit for me. While it felt natural and I didn't notice any major anachronisms I didn't feel warm nostalgia either. Though it is kind of nice to have a book set before the age of cellphones.

I think the story overall was interesting. With the modern tale where Red is the hunter and I can definitely see little nods to the commonly known story thrown in here and there. The characters of Artemis and Leo were also decently drawn and we spent a good deal of time with each of them individually and together. The side characters ranged from flat to being silly caricatures which felt like a waste. I am not even sure why there was so many of them were included.

This story is a 3.5 for me but I have to round it down because there are so many consistency errors. I wish I could be one of those people that could ignore them but my brain doesn't work that way. I can bypass two or three but without even trying I can probably name at least 9 or 10. It got to the point that when I finished all I could focus on was how to make sense of where we were in time and space. I don't even remember her brothers' names but I know that at some point Wednesday may have been Friday because it was both two days after Monday and the day before Saturday.

This book!! It's got me hooked ever since the author shared excerpts and the blurb in her newsletter. I mean, those tutoring sessions plus their meet-cute? Yes, please! And it did not disappoint! I loved the close-knit relationship Artemis has with her family (dad, brothers, and grandma, since that's what we get to see), their cool weapon-handling abilities (I mean, training), as well as the complete enigma that Leo ended up being for her. Seriously, their chemistry and time together were the best (all clean/sweet and swoony), and since theirs was a slow-burn romance, the payoff when they finally kiss was 🙌. The mystery was done well, and I loved how confident "Red" is in her abilities, while at the same time Leo was perfect for showing her what a normal life can look like and that there are other options for some of the problems she's facing. The wolves and their attacks were done well, and I enjoyed the scouting and research missions, as well as the action. What I did not expect was the plot twist towards the end of the book, but I loved how it all played out, till its final chapter and satisfying HEA.

Recommended for fans of YA Paranormal Fantasy, as well as fairytale retellings with a 90s throwback that people who grew up in it will certainly appreciate. ~ 4.5 stars

Content:
Violence: as part of the Paranormal side of the story (use of silver blades and bullets in order to kill wolves). Mentions of bites, turning, demon hunters, "demon disease", and a class on demonology.

Artemis' life has always been planned out for her by her family of hunters & she has accepted it all - the training, the hunting... her betrothed. She's never had time for hobbies.
Them, she meets Leo, a human with no set path and lives in the moment, has a ton of interests & hobbies and is always trying new ones - this makes Artemis realize that there is so much more out there than JUST hunting supernaturals.
This book a lot of the themes that I enjoy in a book - romance, fantasy, humor, and a kick-ass female main character. I also loved that this was set in the 90s.
The book progressed really well with many thrilling happenings and never a dull moment. Would recommend this book to others and I hope to read more by this author in the future.

I love a good Little Red Riding Hood retelling!

Being a teen in the 90's makes this especially entertaining for me as I could basically see myself in this story. Granted, I doubt I'd be as amazing as Artemis here, but let's not go that far into details!

Artemis is set to follow her family's path, something that has been done for generations but there's always something that makes or breaks the road you're following. For her, that comes in the form of Leo and who can blame her for being fully distracted? I'm all for the high round of emotions that he evokes out of her and I want more!

Can she stick to the path or will she inevitably deviate from the plan in order to follow after what could very well be love?

Although the first few chapters were a bit slow; once it got going, it didn't stop. It felt similar to an episode of Supernatural. There were characters to love and ones you loved to hate. I loved that her dad was pushing her to follow her heart instead of just doing what was right for the family. I knew Leo was going to be her one true love as soon as he was introduced. I also had a feeling he was going to be turned (or maybe even killed), but I loved they still got their happily ever after. I was glad she chose the route of no regret, and I think that is why her Grandma told her her story. I did not want to stop reading this, and I was so disappointed when it was over.

This did unfortunately not quite catch my attention.
The story in itself was desent, but I thought it needed some more depth to it. Not to the character's, as Leo and Red were described quite well.
But I kept having the feelings, that something was missing.
However I really, liked the build up to the big fight, and the ending to the story was surprising.

Wolves! Larping and loads of fun!

This was a nice read,m and a clever retelling of Red Riding hood. There was adventure and you can easily see that the author has nature command of dialogue as the characters conversations flowed smoothly. The build up was great and it was descriptive. I would totally recommend this book to YA crowd as well as my friends looking for a strong female protagonist. Glad I picked this up on kindle unlimited.

Good, but not what I expected

I don't know what I was thinking when I read Little Red Riding Hood, but I didn't see this. It's not a retelling. It's a complete reenvisioning. The love story between Leo and Artemis (Red) is satisfying, even if it is expected. Of course, when someone reads a YA werewolf story, they expect a romance. Thankfully, the male love interest wasn't an idiot chauvinist. Artemis didn't simp over him. He simped over her (sort of). Pretty good book.

I had not read Emily Clark before, but this was surprisingly good! I could not put it down! Artemis is a demon hunter in training and is sent to hunt wolves as her graduation test. Artemis is smart, she's strong, dedicated and knows exactly what is expected of her. But when she meets Leo while undercover at the high school, her world is split wide open.

This was a really enjoyable story that had me hooked from the first page.

I love a good fairy-tale retelling, especially those with a darker spin. The story centres around strong female character, Artemis, who is part of a family of hunters. There is also love interest, Leo, which adds a romance element. The story is well paced and action packed. I enjoyed this imaginative supernatural fantasy read. It has something for everyone. Highly recommended.

Original Retelling

I was a teenager in the 90's and this book was a walk down memory lane, though my life wasn't as cool as Red's. While this is a slight retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, it is mostly an original story which is great. I recommend "Red" to people who like paranormal romance and great characters.

A brilliant retelling of red riding hood. This time she is a demon hunter looking for them in a high school which will be her first time at school in her life. There she will meet him and it may end up as something very different for them both. A wonderful story which will keep you hooked until the last page

I got a little over halfway through this book (13 chapters in) when I decided I just couldn't read it anymore. The rough transitions, the timeline gafs, one-dimensional character building... ugh, I just couldn't do it. It's frustrating, though, because I was really looking forward to a good Red Riding Hood retelling.

Very enjoyable teen romance. Leo and Red are both likeable characters. There isn't a lot of character building and the story is predicatable at times, but it is still a very good read that I would recommend to anyone who likes a little fantasy romance in their Fairytales.
