I very much enjoyed this book,, two authors both unaware of the others profession, and in contention, and love it appears.
It’s full of really good characters and chemistry, and looks to be like a great series in the offing.
I’m looking forward to reading more from Ruth.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Lady Alicia Hartley is a successful author. She has written  several books and is convinced that she can now get a better deal from her publisher. Unfortunately her tempestuous nature gets the better of her after a less than flattering review compares her to another author.

Captain Justin Caulfield is using his own writing to exorcise his war time demons, putting his and his men's actions into a fictional setting. Although his books are very popular, especially with men,  his female characters are not as strong.

It's very easy to get involved with our characters feelings in this historical romance.  Both are right and wrong, and when they realize that the excitement and adventure really starts.

An unusual and fun filled start to a new series that I for one will definitely be reading more of.

Great fun.

The Lady and Her Quill is a story about Alicia and Justin who are authors. Their writing style couldn't be more different and Alicia is furious when a review is published saying that she could learn from another author. When she goes to Somer by the Sea for a reading, she meets Justin. After they meet things get interesting and a bit dangerous. I can't say this is a fast paced book, but it is a good read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book one in a series that doesn't read like a book one because good Lord there's a mess of secondary characters floating around with relationships I *think* I'm supposed to understand already - but I don't. There's a good story here but it's buried under messy plotting and a tacked on spy/smuggler thread that feels half-baked at best. The heroine also is one of those who gets butt-hurt easily (uh, honey? It's the 19th century and you're a woman - OF COURSE you're underestimated. Try being clever and sneaky, it will get you farther...) and jumps to conclusions without giving the offending parties (the hero, her brother-in-law, her publisher, her pet goldfish...) a chance to explain themselves.

The tone and structure reminded me quite a bit of a Traditional Regency but the plotting is just too much a of mess. The smuggler nonsense could have been dispatched entirely with the rivalry between the our couple (both writers) being the main focus.

The Lady and Her Quill is a story about Alicia and Justin who are both authors with very different styles. Lady Alicia writes romance, but with strong female heroines, JC Melrose writes about war and adventure featuring strong heroes. When a review is published after her last book, stating the both of the authors would benefit from learning how to write characters of the opposite sex, Lady Alicia is furious, Justin is also miffed. When they continue to run into each other, they become attracted to one another as well. Challenged by a friend to each write a story about the same topic, they end up in the middle of an actual case of espionage and in real danger.

This is the first book I have read by Ruth A. Casie, but it won't be the last. First attracted by the cover and synopsis, the story did not let me down. Of course, a book about two authors also called my name. I enjoyed this story of Alicia, Justin and their family and friends. Alicia is fun and a bit high-strung. She takes things personally and doesn't always stop to listen to others, she does like to talk. Justin uses his writing as therapy, writing about the horrors of war he saw firsthand or heard about from other soldiers. He also has a villain in his stories that represents a person from his past that he wants arrested or even killed. He has no desire to be involved in a relationship, but he can't seem to resist Alicia. I enjoyed their banter and the little tours they went on, making up stories along the way. As he and Alicia come to know and understand one another, mutual respect grows and they discover that they are very alike in their thoughts and deeds. This gives them the upper hand when it comes to facing down a foe. The secondary characters all round out this story nicely. The Lady and Her Quill is a well written story, that builds slowly until the climax. I enjoyed the conclusion and how all the different plotlines come together for a successful ending. I am looking forward to the next book in The Ladies of Sommer by the Sea. I received a copy of this book from the publisher upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

The Lady and Her Quill is book one in a new series written by Ruth A. Cassie—if the rest of the books in the series are written as well, this series will be a hit. This book features two authors who are brought together initially after a bad review proclaims neither of them do well writing characters of the opposite sex. A challenge is issued and neither are willing to fail. As these two authors get to really know and understand each other feelings of respect and admiration begin to develop, which is the start of a beautiful slow burn romance. I always enjoy angst in stories and the author does a great job delivering!

Wait though this is NOT just a romance it has a suspenseful undertone that continues to build and some lovely drama and intriguing encounters which rounds out this story very nicely. I found all the characters easy to like which is always an added bonus!

I am ready for the next book in the series!

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, as the novel brings to light when two authors work in sync with one another. Lady Alicia, an independent young woman with very strong feelings about the quality of her work, is devastated when she discovers that her publisher is trying to push her in another direction. Captain Justin Caulfield is facing a similar dilemma, not realizing that both he and Lady Alicia are being manipulated by their publisher. However, apart from the war novels that he writes, Justin has an even bigger problem on his hands as he closes in on an enemy that has been responsible for the death of so many of his comrades. As he and Alicia come to know and understand one another, mutual respect grows and they discover that their thoughts run on similar lines, which gives them the advantage when facing a fiend. This novel is well written as the suspense slowly builds, coming to a successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

A poor review spirals author Lady Alicia into unknown territory but everything changes when she falls in love with her rival. Lady Alicia is a distinguished author but when her publisher shows her a review comparing her work to JC Melrose, she’s livid. She knows exactly who to blame, that other writer, JC Melrose. As all of her writing plans go up in smoke, she meets handsome Captain Justin Caulfield. Suddenly, he becomes her inspiration and words flow from her pen. The more time they spend together, the harder she falls for him. Little does she know Justin in her rival in more ways than one. Can Alicia and Justin work together to improve each other’s writing or will they tear each other apart to secure victory?

The Lady and Her Quill is a delightful Regency romance from start to finish. The story itself reminded me of an Austen romantic comedy with plenty of misunderstandings, comedic dialogue, enemies to lovers romantic tension, and a happy ending. I simply adored watching Lady Alicia deal with a scathing review and overcome her own insecurities as an author. Life for a female author was very difficult back then and I admired Alicia’s determination. The romance takes its time and I enjoyed reading as it unfolded. While the premise is a familiar trope, Ruth A. Casie breathes new life into it. Ruth A. Casie is an award-winning bestseller and her gift for historical romance is on display in The Lady and Her Quill. From the descriptive narration to the intricate historical details to the lush setting, The Lady and Her Quill is a feast for any romance reader. If historical romance is your reading jam, pick up The Lady and Her Quill. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. Highly recommend!

The Lady and Her Quill by Ruth A. Casie is a very different book, to say the least. It is about a woman author and a man author...very different from one another. When a reviewer suggests they get together and write, as one writes amazing women and the other writes genuine men, Lady Alicia Hartley does not take it as a serious suggestion. Rather, she is offended, and angry. She is already put off by her publisher, who wants to postpone releasing her next book, her little stories, as he calls them. Then she runs headlong into as man as she is leaving his office. What a day. She is on her way to Sommer-by-the-Sea to take part in a book reading and book festival. She had to let his sister and brother-in-law leave without her so now she is going by boat, which appears to be her only choice. How she hates boats. Justin Caulfield was simply dropping into see his uncle before he left for Sommer-by-the-Sea, when he ran into this spirited young woman. He and his uncle were finalizing plans for him to take over the publishing house. Little did he know how much more involved they would get.

This was a much more sedate romance than one normally reads for this time period. They both were very focused on their careers and hadn't given any thought to romance or adventure. Justin had had all the adventure he needed; in fact, writing was a release from all the war he had been involved with. Alicia was so ready to pounce when anyone suggested that her writing was not of value, that she could not see the forest for the trees. This was a terrific book. The characters were real and perfect for each other. Plus, I love the cover! It is heartening to read something with some content for a change. Congratulations, Ruth Casie, for a job well done!

This was my first Ruth A. Casie's book, and definitely won’t be my last. I love the cover. This is the first book in The Ladies of Sommer by the Sea. This riveting historical Romance is a GEM. Lady Alicia and Captain Justin’s story is very well written, and entertaining. Alicia is such a lovely character, headstrong and outspoken. Justin, a retired Captain, is a very handsome gentleman, determined, and devoted. They are so perfect together. The storyline is filled with secrets, mystery, adventure, and danger. I loved the main characters, their slow burn romance, the original and entertaining storyline, and the impressive cast of side characters. The scenery is beautifully described, and easy to visualize. This series could be amazing in audiobook. Looking forward to reading The Lady and the Spy, the next book in the series.

Successful author Lady Alicia Hartley is devastated by a recent review and takes herself off to Sommer by the Sea, whereupon she meets Captain Justin Caulfield. Whilst Justin is aware of Alicia’s achievements as a writer, she is unaware that Justin is actually JC Melrose. Yet Justin’s past also threatens any possible romance that they might have,
A lovely romance with drama to add into the mix. I enjoyed watching Alicia and Justin’s feelings grow for each other over long walks and tours of the town. As their pasts are revealed, we see their respect and admiration for each other develop. The suspense was always in the background and built steady towards the end. I also enjoyed Alicia’s ability to captivate Justin as she told several stories of the town’s history. This brought to life the history of the town.

As a writer I was intrigued by this premise but I found the story very stilted and difficult to read. Beyond the grammatical and punctuation errors, the conversations were awkward and the buildup of the romance clumsy. There was a lot of telling rather than showing, which really bothers me and makes me feel manipulated. In the frequent flashbacks the author didn’t bother to change tense so I was in the middle of each one before I realized it wasn’t happening in the present, which made for frustrating reading. There was also too much going on that was unexplained and didn’t seem to really fit with the main plot of the two authors and their competition, with hints at a smuggling ring and a league of gentlemen and then all the girls at the seminary. It just felt very chaotic so I didn’t finish.

An unusual twist has the story of two authors, writing different types of stories, coming together unexpectedly!

When she receives a bad review on one of her books, pushing her to be more like another author. What she does not know is that he is being pushed toward her!

As these two meet and end up working together to write a story about stolen goods. Little did they know, the villains would be after them!

Enjoyable with a little mystery, a wounded hero, and a journey to finding love!

A story for a lifetime

Alicia is headstrong, intelligent and pretty. She doesn't seem to know much about the real world outside her books. When she is to!d plainly of possible repercussions for her actions she does what she wants. In real life it would have been the death of her!
Justin is handsome and definitely a brave war veteran wanting to get the man who killed his comrades! After these two faced grave danger together you would think they would immediately have their HEA. Nope they drag out writing a book together for 6 more months before they discuss their feelings? What!! This is one of my first books from the author! Will wait and see...

Her mind kept telling her to stop loving him, but her heart couldn’t let him go.

Welcome to book 1 in the fabulous new series, The Ladies of Sommer by the Sea from USA Today Bestselling author Ruth A. Casie!

Renowned author Lady Alicia Hartley has lost her muse after a bad review. She blames it all on the author JC Melrose. A chance encounter with a handsome, witty Justin Caulfield has her heart racing, and her muse seemingly back. Is he her savior or her worst nightmare?

He didn’t see the turbulent ocean. He was too busy dealing with a different tempest.

The recently retired Captain Justin Caulfield is facing his own demons. As gifted author JC Melrose, his stories honor men who died at the hand of one man. His only focus is to avenge their deaths, that is, until he meets and falls in love with Lady Alicia.

The two authors take on a writing challenge based on a story of stolen gold taken from the newspaper headlines all to determine the better writer. While researching the story, Lady Alicia is captured by the thieves’ ringleader. Can Lady Alicia turn this mystery into an award-winning story? Can Justin save his real-life heroine?

Can they both overcome their own challenges for a happily ever after?

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will his unintentional unsaids tear them apart …

This is my first read by the author, so it was first the cover then the blurb which caught my eyes. Plus I am a sucker for scholar/bluestocking romance, having both in it, sold me to this book instantly.
Alicia is fun, a bit high-strung about her work but I suppose no one like to be criticized, even if it is constructive. She pours her feelings and souls into her stories, so having to see them under a different light, is rather painful.
Justin uses his writings as a therapy, to clear his mind from the horrors et witnessed and survived. This is his way to find peace, so he is more circumspect when his work receive a similar review to Alicia’s.

This book is an entertaining first in a new series, with two fierce heroes sharing the same love for words, yet as Justin finds himself caught into a misunderstanding, as they get embroiled in a game not of their making, a challenge which even put Alicia’s safety at risk.

A missing muse, missing emotions. Can two authors learn from each other?

Lady Alicia arrives at her publisher’s office with her newest book and nervous courage to renegotiate their agreement. Before she does, though, she sees a review of her last book that points out that while her heroine is written beautifully, her supporting cast lacks substance. Mentioned in her review is that of another author’s, JC Caulfield. His comments reflect praise for his hero and supporting characters but that that they lack emotion, especially his heroine. If only they could join forces and combine their talents!

When the publisher indicates he’d like to push out the publication of Alicia’s newest book, she leaves in a huff, bumping into a young man. She doesn’t wait to find out that he is the publisher’s nephew or that he will be taking over the publishing house. She particularly doesn’t wait to discover that he is also JC Melrose, the other author mentioned in her review. The two meet up again in Sommer-by-the-Sea where they are scheduled to read from their respective books. When one of Alicia’s friends suggest a writing contest, they’re set as opponents. Swirling around them are several mysterious people new to town and a chest of stolen gold. Playing a background character is a cave used by smuggler’s on a Sommer-by-the-Sea beach.

Every author has had a bad review now and then, so we can all relate to Alicia’s dismay when she reads hers. Well described, Ms Casie! What wonderful interactions Justin and Alicia have. Introduced in this Book 1 are Alicia’s friends that play parts in subsequent books, as well as Justin’s army buds. I appreciated the back story of the theft of the gold, but the best part of the book is the romance built between Alicia and Justin. There’s plenty of action and military commentary in addition to the romance. If you enjoy historical romance, this is a must-read!

THE LADY AND HER QUILL
BY RUTH A. CASIE

The Lady and Her Quill is the first installment in best-selling author. This is Ruth A. Casie’s newest regency romance series.

Captain Justin Caulfield, struggles with the emotional scars left by his time during the war. His aunt suggested that journaling might be away of unloading some of the trama he had to endure. His writing really takes off, and numerous ex-soldiers, along with those who enjoy storylines seen through a mans eye. In a series of events both authors find themselves crossing paths at same destination, Summer-by-the-Sea

Lady Alicia Hartley’s is passionate about her writing, and her woman’s perspective stories have become all the rage. Confident that she now has bargainer power with her publisher. Armed with her newest achievement she descends on the Caulfield Publishing House. When nothing goes as planned, she leaves quite upset. Leaving feeling hurt and offended, from an unflattering book review by anonymous reviewer.

She goes as planned on a holiday to Sommer-by-the-Sea.
Both are drawn to each other and the sparks fly. An unsuspected budding romance begins.

Let the writing challenge begin….

When the two are challenged to write a story on the same topic, things get dangerous as villains descend. Lady Alicia Hartley and Captain Justin Caulfield find themselves caught up in a sinister situation.
A fast paced, captivating story that involves an unlikely pair of authors. Finding themselves in a situation that both can learn from each other. Ultimately each would benefit their overall writing. Quick delightful banter and some villainous characters makes for a lovely historical romance.

This book is certainly one that accomplishes its role as the start of a new series. The author gives us characters that are complex and multifaceted. All of the intertwining relationships lead the story along. The budding relationship between Justin and Alicia was predictable but entertaining. Casie gave these characters witty dialogue and allowed them multiple opportunities for flirtatious banter. Their shared occupation, the circumstances surrounding their relationship, and outside forces lead them into unfortunate circumstances. This book has plenty of mystery and a romance that was beautifully written. I appreciate that Casie ensured that both Justin and Alicia were able to be identified with their own writing styles. The book wasn’t a page turner for me. I felt that the unfolding of the secondary plotline was a bit confusing at first and slow to take shape. As I enjoyed the characters and the writing style of the main plot, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this title from the author in conjunction with my participation in the Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours.

This is my first book by Ms. Casie and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be looking for more of her books in the future. This is the first of the The Ladies of Sommer by the Sea series and it looks to be off to a great start. The character development was well-done and I enjoyed reading their interactions. The chemistry between them was quite evident. Alicia and Justin are both authors with two different writing styles. They are both being criticized and pushed in another writing direction by their publisher. It seems they are both being manipulated. They meet each other at Sommer by the Sea. As they continue meeting, their attraction to each grows and they begin to understand each other better. Aside from the writing, there is some danger that comes their way. The suspense is slow building but definitely keeps you glued. With a little mystery and romance added in, this was quite an entertaining and enjoyable read. I would love to read the next in the series!

I received a complimentary advanced reader's copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

I read through five chapters. a third of the way through ... and it just wasn't grabbing me. I want to "want" to continue reading, but instead, I'd just want to put it down again. I'm more picky when it comes to "reading" ... as that's dedicated time (compared to multi-tasking with audiobooks).

Set in 1814 London. 3rd person. Past tense. The POV would shift from Alicia to Justin. I was getting a little confused at the Justin storyline ... he's supposed to take over his uncle's publishing company, but now he doesn't want to? Is he taking over Caulfield Publishing or is it closing (thus him seeking out a new publisher/Lane).

An article in the paper, an anonymous review suggests two authors could learn from each other, on how to write the opposite sex more convincingly. Justin knows Alicia is the other author, Alicia doesn't recognize Justin ...

... but, I'm calling it. Ironic to have a book talking about author's writing, and yet I felt this felt somewhat stilted. I'd picked up the book as a Kindle freebie.

Both Alicia and Justin are successful authors. Alicia writes romances with heroines outside the norms of the day while Justin writes fiction from his own war experiences. A newspaper review points out that both their books' weakness is their characters of the opposite sex. Justin is also searching for a cohort of Napoleon's, The Frenchman. He is killing people close to Justin because when Justin was captured by Napoleon, they talked for two hours making The Frenchman angry. Huh? There is a lot of discussion about the role of men vs. women. Men act, women think first.... The story veered from the two of them getting to know each other to his group the League, spies, smugglers, etc. It got a little convoluted and I kept forgetting who some of the characters were. The writing style was a little off for me but I did enjoy Alicia and her frustration with society's restrictions for women. I received an ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

A new author for me, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and strong writing skills of Ruth Casie. This book certainly set a precedence for the rest of the series.
What I find most interesting in this novel was the storyline, quite different and very well done.
Now having said that, at the same time, it did have parts that dragged and took a while to get going. I restarted this several times and found myself skimming in order to finish the first 1/4 of the book.
The characters are well done and have just enough development to get a good understanding of their backgrounds and motivations. This is a slow-burn romance with a bit of mystery thrown in.
While I wasn't crazy about this book, I do recommend it and would read the second book of the series.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

A highly intelligent writer, the Lady and her Quill is the first in this new series and it does not disappoint. Alicia is a successful author whose books depict strong independent heroines. Justin writes of his experiences as a Captain who makes a point of caring for the welfare of his men and their widows and families. His uncle publishes both of their books and wants his nephew to take over the Company. Both our protagonists holiday in Summer-by-the-Sea where our adventures begin. An excellent story and well written. I urge anyone who likes mystery and romance cleverly created, to read this.

Quills up!

A strong, feist heroine who knows her own mind and writes what she knows. A retired captain from the Napoleonic war who writes under an assumed name to honor those with whom he served, and the families of those who didn't return. Add in a secret league, staunch friends of both the H and h, a misunderstanding, and a writing challenge that leads to more background inspiration than expected, and you have A Lady and Her Quill. And this is only book one! On to see what's next for these ladies and the men who support and love them. BTW, this is a clean read with some kissing.

Wonderfully written

Really enjoyed this book. The characters were so realistic and relatable, it was easy to feel their pain and their joy. The dialogue was delightful, with no typos nor grammatical or syntax errors. Wonderful! The storyline was a bit complicated at times, and hard to follow … there was so much action going on with so many of the characters, I find I tended to lose interest. But in the end it all came together. It was a lovely story and well worth the effort.

I kept passing over this book in my Kindle library, unsure that I wanted to read it. It was different than the books I’d been reading for a while. It surprised me that I loved it. 2 strong characters with issues they are fighting. 2 writers needing the other to make them better while also resolving old issues. We get to see one’s strengths emerge and one’s fears relieved. I fell in love with both of these people and look forward to reading the next one.
