The first time Anna tried to read a romance novel, her hair caught on fire when she leaned over a candle to sneak a peek at her mom’s Harlequin. She thinks being hit on the head with a shirtless Fabio until the smoke cleared is what sparked the flame for her love of romance. Anna was born in Wisconsin, but currently lives in Texas with her husband and two boys. She writes sexy romance that always has a happy ending and loves bringing characters back for cameos. Less than six degrees of separation connects any of her novels. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s watching reruns of her favorite romcoms, talking to her dog and cat like they’re human, eating carbs, or practicing hand lettering. She loves to hear from readers and can be found on social media as @annabrooksauth everywhere.
Drift by Anna Brooks is book Two in the Guarding Her series. This is the story of Billie Bishop and Carter Cane. I have read the previous book but feel this was easily a standalone book. Billie grew up in abusive home where her mother did what she could but Billie became able to take care of herself. When her mother helped her to leave she did so and is still taking care of herself while trying to break into acting. Carter has a instant attraction to Billie just as she does. Billie does have a hard time giving her trust after the life she has. Carter is a man that loves to take care of his women and protect her. I enjoyed reading their story and hope to read more books in this series!
Billie Bishop escapes a life of abuse from her father because of the sacrifices of her mom. Three years ago, her mom packed her a bag, gave her a roll of cash and told her to leave and make something of her life. Three years later, Billie has a nice apartment in California and is still pursuing her dreams to become an actress. Meanwhile, she hunts for thrift store treasures and supports herself waitressing in a high end restaurant.
Carter Cane was once a top rated surfer. Nowadays he’s a bodyguard. He refuses to talk about what happened and why he quit surfing. He first lays eyes on Billie when they literally bump into each other while he’s acting as security for a senator. When he sees her in a farmer’s market once again, he can’t help but check her out. Does she remember meeting him before?
Turns out that the two of them have lived in the same apartment complex for the last two years. Carter self-appoints himself as her protector. In spite of all of his baggage he is drawn to her innocence and good hearted nature. Trust does not come easily to Billie, her own parent couldn’t be trusted not to hurt her. But slowly her walls are coming down.
Drift has secrets and danger. Can two people so damaged and cracked allow themselves to find happiness?
This series is becoming one of my faves. After the life Billie had, she needed a man like Carter in her life. She was a sweet girl that had so much happened to her. Carter omg he was so protective of Billie. Loved it. He was awesome. He has a past that he thinks he can’t get rid of. He was just awesome. Love that all the men of Royal Security are so protective. Can’t wait for each of their stories. 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..This is the second book in the series and entertaining. We have two people who arrived in each others life at the right time, they both have sad backgrounds so I am very happy that they got to meet and be the person that each other needed. We meet Carter a body guard who used to be a surfer and is a pretty good guy. Carter meets Billy, and she came from a horrible past so he is just what she needed and he already starts with being her protector. Billy was trying to start over and is not looking for a man but things change my friends when she meet Carter and it was insta-love..
Drift is the story of two broken souls getting a chance to heal. Both Billie and Carter had emotional back stories, I wanted good things for them. Brooks gives us another supreme alpha and insta-lust story, yet manages to make it feel much different from the first.
Again, I was kept engaged throughout with an exciting story line. There was a lot going on in this story and while some of it may have been a bit much, I still couldn’t stop reading. I loved the way these two helped each other grow and change throughout.
Now, after reading two books in the Guarding Her Series, I’m very interested in seeing where she takes us with the rest of the men of Royal Ace Security. These have been fun, easy, and enjoyable reads and I look forward to the rest.
Billie was raised in an abusive household until three years ago her mother gave her all the money she had so that Billie could escape and start a new life far away from her abusive father with the promise that she wouldn’t come back. She dreams of being an actress but until that happens she works as a waitress and although she doesn’t have much she has her freedom.
Carter is an ex-surfer who was living the dream until an accident destroyed the life he knew. He is now working as a bodyguard at Royal Ace Security.
From the moment he saw her he was drawn to her but once he met her the feelings became much stronger. He feels that because of his past she deserves better but when danger surrounds her there is no other else that he trusts to protect her.
Carter is a strong alpha protector but he has met his match in Billie due to her feisty and challenging personality. I am enjoying this series and look forward to seeing who the next man from Royal Ace Security is to fall. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
While I'm not a fan of insta-love. Anna Brooks did nice job of making it not super annoying between Carter and Billie. the pet names tho...gag. This is the second book in the series and not having read the first, I'm not sure if Carter was talked about, so I will tread lightly as to not spoil his story line.
Carter seems like an all around good guy. He's had tragedy in his past, that now has his guard up 24/7 and in protection mode. That said, he easily honed in on the young, lonely Billie as he runs into her for the first time.
Billie, with a tragic past of her own, is in L.A. looking to make something of herself. She made a promise three years before and is still trying her best to get there. Not necessarily looking for a man in her life, Carter seems to always be in the right place at the right time. She gets a good vibe from him, the protective vibe she's been missing all along.
These two fit. Sure they annoyed the heck out of me at first, all of the baby and honey's after just meeting, however him with his street smarts and her with her loving nature, it was nice they found each other. Of course, things aren't easy, but Anna Brooks put them through the ringer pretty quickly for the story to move on.
The book is well written and definitely grew on my by the end.
This one drew me in by the story line. I read the first one so when I seen this one I thought I would give it a go. This one is centered around Billie and Carter who take you to the edge. They both have their pasts but now you are drawn to what could happen now. When they cross paths things start happening. The spiral will get you involved with the drama pulling you to the edge. What appears to be and what really is happening is what does it with you wanting action like now. Good one to get wound up and down with.
Great read. I loved it. Not much of an epilogue, but it's a series. Safety:There is mention of sex trafficking, the h was touched and grabbed, but that's as far as it went. The only om drama is from the boss who grabbed her and another guy who was trying to sell her at the auction. The H does have a dead girlfriend, and she is brought up some, but only cause he feels guilty for not saving her. I never felt like the h was second best. I felt that the h was his one. Very great read. Can't wait for the next.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is another great book in this series but definitely can be read as a standalone. Carter is the definition of the perfect book boyfriend. He's protective, sexy and he loves with his whole heart. Billie is a strong heroine who has had a hard start to life and is leery of strangers. When these two meet the attraction is instant but Billie isn't as ready as Carter. What follows is a great love story. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
What a perfect couple. You know from the beginning they are meant to be together. She needs saving and he needs to save her. They are so sweet together. Very enjoyable read.
Carter is amazing. He is exactly the man that Billie needed in her life after growing up with an abusive, alcoholic drug-abuser who hurt her and her mother. Carter is strong, sensitive and sweet with a secret all his own. Billie has a hard time trusting that she is good enough for this man. She is strong in her own right and even they way she grew up didn't take the hope out of her. Anna Brooks writes such a wonderful story, heartbreaking and redeeming and hopeful all at the same time. Loved it from start to finish!
“Carter Cane.” She looks up at me. “That’s the most superhero name I’ve ever heard.” “I am not a superhero.” She puts the card on the counter and slides it toward me. “What are you, Carter Cane?” “Just a man.” Her head falls to the side, and she studies me. “I don’t know if I believe that.” “Who are you, Billie…?” “Bishop. Billie Bishop.” I snicker, and she straightens her spine, the backbone in full effect. “Why’re you laughing?” “If I have a superhero name, then you have the best goddamned damsel in distress name I’ve ever heard.”
Fresh starts are difficult. How far can you put the past aside and move on? Billie and Carter try at all costs. She, with the help of her mother, fled the nightmare that was her home. Three years later, she lives in a good apartment, works as a waitress, has no luxuries, but can survive. She escaped from the hell she lived in, but the marks still remain. Carter was a very famous surfer who, after a personal tragedy, abandoned his career and closed down to the world, blaming himself for what happened in the past. She dreams of being an actress, not by vocation, but by trying to recreate a sense of happiness she experienced with her mother, at a time when the escape from reality was a solution. He, now a bodyguard, puts himself in the role of savior to try to repair a mistake, and who knows achieve redemption. A bump will make them know each other. The girl who has suffered and feels fear and does not live will develop a friendship with the boy who has long been locked out of the world and amidst so many differences and similarities, the two discover that they are exactly what the other needs. Gradually, this friendship causes changes in both. Carter watches the resurgence of his protective instincts and can not hide that Billie evokes feelings until then dormant. Billie, who does not let anyone approach, starts to trust Carter, and feels protected by his side. An unusual and dangerous situation appears in Billie’s way, and it is up to Carter to be her savior and to rescue her. The two will have to confront the past in search of closure, and thus free themselves from all the ties that bind them, if they want the happy ending. The book is good, funny despite the past of the characters, the couple has chemistry and the plot is well conducted. As I said above, fresh starts are difficult, but if you allow yourself, the possibility of a happy future is within your reach. Billie and Carter did it.
Carter Cane works for Royal Ace Security and is a former world famous surfer who gave it all up six years ago after the death of his girlfriend, Zoe Sanders.
Billie Bishop has been on the run for three years now to escape her abusive father. She works at a cafe but is trying to make something of herself.
When Carter and Billie meet outside of a cafe and then at a farmer's market maybe destiny is trying to tell them something. When Carter is there for Billie time after time she realizes that he is good for her and when she lands herself in a heap of trouble will Carter be able to get to her in time?
This was a great book about finding love again and trusting someone when you've been let down in the past.
Carter wanted to put his past to rest and move onto the future without any mention of surfing or Zoe ever. As we learn he just had so much guilt over everything that he felt like he couldn't go back to that part of his life. He had gotten into security and wanted to protect people - probably due to what he felt he couldn't do in the past.
Zoe was a survivor and I loved that she survived the way she did and relied on transit and had such a naive sense of the world and what could go wrong. I loved that she was open with Carter about her boss and her audition and how he promised he would be there for her.
The chemistry between Zoe and Carter was through the roof and I loved how they were there for each other but it took awhile for their secrets to be revealed.
I loved how Carter was there for Zoe and the extent he went to in order to get Zoe out of the trouble she was in. I also loved what he did for her mom!
The end was great and I look forward to more in this series!!
Book Review: Drift (Guarding Her book 2) Author: Anna Brooks FIVE STARS I have read everything that Anna Brooks has written. I own them all on Kindle and have many paperback copies as well. To say that I am a fan of her writing is an understatement. Being an avid reader, it takes a lot to turn me into a fan and well, Anna Brooks is homed on the shelf right next to Nora Roberts and Jeffery Deaver in my collections. I purchased these books because well, Anna Brooks, DUH. But, I was not at all prepared for the words or the depths of the feelings I would encounter in this series. The main characters, while being all ALPHA males, are swoon-worthy in their own right. In Drift, we meet Billie and Carter. Carter works for Royal Ace Securtiy and is trying to forget his past, the past that cost him so much and hurt him badly. Billie was sent away by her mother once she turned 18. Running from an abusive drunk father, Billie wants to become a soap opera star so that she can make her mother proud of her and so that she can maybe one day go back for her mother and get her away from her father. Carter and Billie keep running into each other, is it fate throwing them together? When Billie has an audition that seems sketchy, she doesn't listen to her gut. Too intent on making a name for herself, will Carter be able to save her?? The Guarding her series of books can be read in order or as stand alones. I did read them in order but honestly, just read them. They are wonderful. Kelli Harper
Drift is Anna Brooks' second book in the Guarding Her Series and I truly enjoyed it.
Carter is a sweet, kind, and loveable young man who has seen his share of tradegy at such a young age. He is afraid to commit to a relationship and it will take a special young woman to win his heart.
Billie has seen her share of abuse by the hands of her father and her mother sends her away from their home to help Billie. Billie is so desperate for love, she seems to be looking for love in all the wrong places. Plus, she is so obsessed with wanting to make something of her life in her mother's eyes, that her determination gets her into a bit of a mess.
Carter and Billie are such an amazing couple, their storyline is very well written and I fell in love with them.
I truly enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. This is a true happy everafter story and you will fall in love with this couple. ❤
I received this book in the form of an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) in exchange for my true and honest review. I am such a huge fan of Anna Brooks and her writings. Her books are very well written and I HIGHLY recommend this amazing story to my friends and family. ❤
This is the second book in this series. The blurb is a little off on this book for me. Carter lost his girlfriend years ago and hasn’t been the same since. He blames himself even though there is nothing he could have done. It was an accident. Biilie Bishop had a difficult childhood. Her mother woke her one night and sent her away. She has been on her own for the last several years. When Carter runs into her several times and can’t stop thinking about her he hopes to run into her again. And he does. Only to find out that she lives right across the hall from him. She wakes up parts of him that he never thought he would feel again. Billie is leery of trusting anyone especially a man with the way she has grown up. Billie makes Carter’s protect instincts flair. He carries around so much guilt from his ex’s death and feels like he doesn’t deserve Billie but he also can’t leave her alone. I loved this book. Carter is an amazing man. He goes out of his way to give Billie as much as she will allow him give her. They both manage to help each other is ways they never imagined. This book made me laugh one minute and tugged at my heart strings the next. I can’t wait to read more books in this series. You should read this book/series. I was given this book in return for an honest review.
Romance with all the swoon, sweetness to die for, and a deliciously sexy alpha Drift has all that and more. Right from the prologue that had me gasping and through every page this book kept me hooked start to finish. I melted at the sweetness. I was swept off my feet by Carter and his love for Billie. I just really freaking loved this book. Carter and Billie have one of those loves that is immediate. The kind that comes out of nowhere and changes their whole worlds. The kind that takes you away while your reading and feels your heart with happiness. That kind of instalove goodness all packed into a book with a gripping story.
Carter is a man that will have everyone screaming “MINE!” This bada*$ security provider also hides a gentle heart behind his tragic past. The second he lays eyes on Billie he’s a goner. Billie is a sweetheart with a tragic past of her own. Determined to make her dreams come true and make her mother proud she works her butt off never giving up. To say these two were perfect together is an understatement. Like two halves of a whole they fit together so beautifully.
What a totally enjoyable, sweet, heartbreaking, heart-mending story that will have your emotions running up and down, hot and cold by the time you reach the end of the story about two extremely broken people and a second chance at having a happily ever after. She ran away from an abusive home life with her mother's help and insistence and has lived the last few years in California, working as a waitress and auditioning for parts, hoping to catch a break and make it onto a Soap Opera. He had it all, the career, the money, the girl. But one terrible accident took it all away, leaving him to switch careers and carry a ton of guilt for something he had no control over.
The characters are wonderfully written and quite complex. Billie is beautiful, smart, and just the sweetest person you would ever want to meet. And Carter really wants to meet her. Him, well he's gorgeous, smart and wants to protect not only her, but people in general. It's his job...he's a body guard and it's her body that he really wants to guard.
This is truly a wonderful read and I hope that you will find it as enjoyable as I did. I highly recommend this read.
Anna’s books never seem to faze me, they truly keep getting better. The two main characters in this story are Carter and Billy and their love, chemistry and understanding for each other was simply amazing. Loved it so much! Each of her Guarding her books has revolved around one couple but the supporting characters give these stories as much depth as the main hero and heroine do. This story is no different than the first one i read, i loved Surface and now i can without a doubt that i love Drift equally. Carter and Billie have so many issues and insecurities to get past in order to finally find their HEA, and yes they find it but man the ride to get there was absolutely beautiful to read. Between Carter’s misplaced guilt and Billie’s need to become something in order to make her mom happy and proud of her was frustrating at times. They both needed to take a step back and realize that all they ever needed was each other....they almost miss that moment... This is a must read of Anna’s i promise there will be no regrets, this a beautiful series and well worth the few days to complete.
Genre: Romance - Suspense, bodyguard Standalone: Yes Part of a Series: Yes, book 2 of the Guarding Her Series which is a spin off of her Pleasant Valley Series The guys are all interconnecting but no need to know their stories to enjoy the current story. POV: Billie and Carter Steam Level: Kindle-melting 4.5/5
Once again I was sucked in and blown away from the start of reading Drift. These guys fall hard and fast (no pun intended) and once they've locked on to their woman there is nothing they won't do to protect them. The banter is hilarious and the attitudes realistic for their life experiences. Carter is alpha to the extreme but Billie holds her own against him, especially when he becomes too overbearing. I like that Billie is strong, independent, and stands up for herself. If you're looking for an intense romantic suspense with strong male and female character and witty banter then pick up Drift by Anna Brooks.
I received an advanced copy of this book for free. This is my honest and voluntary review.
In so many ways Billie is way too beautiful and naïve for California, although she is also extremely tough. Having grown up with an abusive father she is lucky when one night her mother sends her way to make sure that Billie is able to escape her small town and make something of herself.
Carter has been battling the demons of his inability to save his girlfriend for years. So much so that he has become a bodyguard so he can do just that; protect people. He lives with regret and anger every day, until fate brings Billie to him.
Although he believes she deserves more than someone like him, Carter can't resist becoming part of Billie's life. And once he does, Carter will do everything in his power to protect her. She quickly becomes an unintended, but important part of his life.
Billie has never had anyone care for her or felt as protected as when she is with Carter. Together, these two complete each other and show what a HEA can be. (Review by Terri "Jane")
3.5 stars Drift is a second chance for Carter Cane, the famous surfer whose also famous girlfriend was killed in a car accident. Carter takes the blame for the accident and denies himself anything good until he meets Billie. Even then, he doesn’t go all in because he is afraid to share his past with her. Billie also has secrets so they keep them from each other. I never felt like either character was fully committed to the relationship until these secrets were on the table. I was surprised by the auction that Billie finds herself at, thinking it is an audition to be in a reality show. This was a seriously dark turn in the book. I thought Ms. Brooks handled that part very well, but was also surprised that Billie didn’t have more of a reaction to that. I would have been scarred for a long time! All in all, I feel like Drift is a good second book in this series. It was entertaining and I loved Billie and Carter getting their happily ever after. They both had to go through so much to get there. There is no need to read the series in order, both can be read as standalones.
Drift by Anna Brooks is the second book in the Guarding Her series. It can be read as a standalone but you do not want to miss the first one because it’s amazing as well! I loved this book so much! The storyline was fantastic, it was well written, and the emotions I felt while reading were wide-ranging.
Carter is everything you want in a book boyfriend-possessive, loyal, sweet, and will do anything for their women. Billie was an amazing heroine as well. She came from nothing but instead of giving up, she persevered showing her strength and her willingness to survive. When they meet, sparks fly but neither are looking for love. With Billie being abused by her father and Carter having a life altering event happen, neither of them are really truly living. Will Carter be able to move on from his past? And will Billie be able to trust again?
Ms.Brooks wrote an amazing story filled with characters that wove their way into my heart. I am so excited to read the next book in the series!!!
I’ve heard a lot of good things about this author. So I was excited to be able to finally read a book by her. Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last too long.
Billie comes from a rough childhood and seems to find trouble every which way she turns. Carter on the other hand had a devastating experience a couple of years ago that shaped who he is today. It seems as if it is love at first sight for both characters. But Billie being who she is, is skeptical. Over time there relationship blooms and so does their love.
The book left me wanting more and not in a good way. I felt as if the story-line was rushed and I couldn’t really connect with the characters. I didn’t feel invested in the story like I normally am. The major climaxes in the book felt like little humps instead of being made to be big issues like they are in the real world. I encourage everyone to read the book and to form their own opinions. But for me this book was just not for me. - By Vanessa

4.5/5 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ just because of the constant pet names (honey, sweetheart, etc.) which is a real life pet peeve of mine. Other than that personal annoyance of mine, it was a fast paced plot and I really enjoyed the romance aspect of the book!
SYNOPSIS __________ Billie’s had a hard life. When she was 18, her mom sent her away from an abusive family situation as long as she promised to never return. Then the boss at her fancy new job turned around and fired her after she wouldn’t give into his sexual assault. Enter her savior: Carter Cane, who just wants to protect her from any harm though he’s highly damaged himself. When Billie has an “audition” for a soap tv show, the producers are more than suspicious and leave her scarred. Bodyguard Carter’s gut instincts cause him to follow her to the followup interview which leads them to a HUMAN TRAFFICKING RING.
Great 2nd book to the series. The author has written a wonderful storyline and given us two great lead characters in Billie and Carter. They are strong, loveable characters and their story will keep you turning the pages.
Billie had a hard life growing up due to an abusive father and has a hard time trusting; especially men. Carter had a perfect life until one tragic swoop took everything away. Now he lives to protect others and protective streak especially wants to take care Billie. and be there for her.
The storyline is both heart wrenching and heart warming. It will have your emotions rolling as you read this wonderful 2nd chance story. I don’t want to give any more away, so I’ll just say how very much I enjoyed “Drift” and I highly recommend both this book and the series. 2 Thumbs Up for a great read!
WOW!!!!! Another intense book by Anna Brooks has written. Carter Cane had everything a loving Girlfriend and an amazing career in surfing. Then in a flash he looses everything Billie Bishop is a sweet girl, who lived a life in hell until her mother did the most selfless thing, she sent Billie away. But Billie only escaped one hell and walked into another. As I said it was a very intense book, Billie who is working as a waitress want to actually work on a soap opera. Her dreams are about to come true...Or so she thinks Carter is truly her lifeline in more ways then she realizes. He's a bit intense and at times intimidating. But for Billie he tries to tone it down. Both characters start to let their walls down. It's a rough process for both. But as they grow closer the harder they fall
I haven't read the first book in this series, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything when I read this one. Billie had escaped an abusive father, thanks to help from her mother, and Carter had lived through a horrible accident that claimed his fiancée. When the two meet, they are immediately drawn together. So much happens in this book, but Billie and Carter falling in love is the most important thing of all. I love their interactions, the way each wants to make the other safe and happy. There are moments I want to shake one or the other of them (mostly Carter), but they are very believable and loveable characters. I just adore this story. I do plan to go back and read the first book, and I'll read any that follow. I will be amazed if any make me fall for the main couple as much as this one did, but I will try. The author told a wonderful story, and I highly recommend this book.
