Mike Bravo. Knights in shining … camo.

Iris

I live for adrenaline. The thrill of the chase. And because I work for Mike Bravo, a private black-ops firm, it’s my job to go into dangerous situations.

But when we’re called in to extract a military team from a hostile situation, the thrill is so much better. Because one of those men happen to be the golden boy from my basic training days.

Brock “Saint” Harlow was a walking Captain America in the flesh. The perfect soldier.

Now my boss wants to recruit him, and I can’t wait to rub it in his face that he was rescued by me. The class clown.

I’m not called Iris “I require intense supervision” for nothing.

Saint

Military life is all I’ve known since I was born. I was raised to be a soldier.

But when a top-secret mission fails, I find myself suddenly discharged with nowhere to go.

Mike Bravo saved my life, and they want me to join them, but there’s one small problem.

Isaac “Iris” Griffin.

He’s as irresistibly snarky as he always was, only there’s a big difference this time. I’m no longer closeted or scared to live my truth. And the truth is, I’ve always wanted him.

It’s against Mike Bravo’s rules to fraternize with other team members, and I always follow orders.

But something tells me Iris might be worth the insubordination.

Yay, we finally get Iris' book! 😁

We first met Iris in "Pop Star (Famous #1)" and I immediately wanted *moar* of Brix's little-bit-crazy teammate at Mike Bravo; however, for anyone curious, Brix is only mentioned maybe twice in passing in this story, so there's zero need for any type of re-read this time around.

[My take on fun-loving Iris...]

As the book began, Iris was on a rescue mission to save a group of military contractors in northern Africa, where we were introduced to Brock (aka Saint), who was on the brink of death, after his mission had gone sideways.

[My take on golden boy Saint...]

I liked how Iris had no idea that the person he was rescuing was his very competent, overly-cocky, good-at-everything-he-does nemesis from basic training a decade ago.

To avoid getting too spoilery, I'll just say that my favorite parts were where Iris stopped being a total jokester long enough to make sure that, as Saint healed, he was given all of the time and support that he needed to recover and start moving past his PTSD.

And that once Saint saw that more serious and caring side to Iris, his feelings that Iris was incapable of being someone who could be relied on changed drastically.

Also, the total support and understanding displayed by Trav and his entire team at Mike Bravo was a little unexpected, but appreciated.

With this being Iris' story, though, I did expect the level of crazy to ping a bit higher on the meter. Some of it was still there, for sure, just not nearly as much as I'd expected.

What was there, in spaaaaaades, was steam. Lots and lots and lots of steam. An itty bit more than I needed, if I'm being completely honest, so I did end up eventually skimming through some of those later sexy scenes.

As for the romance, that was simmering under the surface throughout most of the story, with neither of the MC's wanting to rush things, then the feels came out strong and heavy all at once toward the end.

If I had to find a niggle, I guess I'd say that, for this to be a story about a team of highly-trained Special Ops guys, there were only two real "action" scenes, with their other duties entailing less exciting local excursions, so I wouldn't have complained about a tad more gunfire and explosions.

Overall, I'd rate the book at around 4 stars and I'm looking forward to continuing this new series.

If you’re going to make up an “African country” and call it “Udoola,” thinking it’s taking away the stereotypes you may be afraid to make if you associated your fictional world with real-life Africa, yet still consider this so-called Udoola a terrorist country, a country of war, and one where Udoolans aren’t even a part of the narrative…well, let me tell you, it’s not different.

The African country is still a country not only of terrorism, but primarily Arab and Muslim. From the beginning, when Iris ends up saving Saint, we, of course, see that the other side are speaking in Arabic. Think of the Hollywood movies that intensify the yellow hue of war and military movies when they’re set in Southwest Asia (the Middle East) or when they’re supposed to “be” a SWANA country. While that’s happening, good old USA is bright and sunny, full of cheer and happiness, all while the other countries are represented to be nothing but war and disaster.

That’s what Udoola is.

This was my first time reading an m/m romance with the military as the primary factor. I admit that when it comes to military fiction, there’s going to be some suspense of belief that will need to happen. It isn’t a story to take seriously, and there are a lot of things that other readers may not like. For example, the banter is definitely too OTT. Adding on to that, sometimes they all sounded the same. Saint and Iris were also said to be opposites but they were the exact same. They were competitive, rivals, and wanted to prove themselves to the whole team. The only difference is that Iris was a proud and out bisexual man, even during his time in training, while Saint was a closeted gay man. Saint also developed PTSD while Iris wasn’t exactly dealing with any sort of psychological trauma. I will say that I appreciated how they kept the rivals aspect throughout the whole book simply because it kept the original characterization. Their banter was actually what made the story the most enjoyable for me. I found myself laughing at some of its ridiculous scenarios and wanted to continue seeing how they would develop as partners as well as rivals. But that was also the only thing I enjoyed. So, despite the banter and dialogue being too ridiculous, it worked for me. Yet, there isn’t anything else appealing or even memorable. Both characters felt the same so there wasn’t anything too special about each other besides the small representation given.

The whole idea of a private sector is also unbelievable, but it wasn’t the worst. I like the rejection of toxic masculinity and embracing who you are.

A lot of things also didn’t make sense—how Saint instantly worked for Trav because they saved him; how he didn’t walk away even if had the opportunity to; how easy the suspense/crime plot was wavered off. I also thought there was too much sex and not enough action. For a story revolving around capturing a terrorist (in which it was mentioned was similar to Osama Bin Laden, yet still worse), the plot was a little too insignificant to the storyline overall. It felt like it was mostly focused on the tension Iris and Saint found themselves dealing with.

I appreciate a good versatile m/m story, especially when it’s two alpha men who are proud of who they are and what they want, but you gotta give me more than that.

I rated this 3 stars at first, but then debated on whether or not 2-stars sounded more fitting. Iris and Saint are forgettable characters, the story was still built on stereotypes, and there were too many moments that could have been replaced with action. The story had one enjoyable quality for me, while the rest went downhill. This was one of my most anticipated releases for the month, as well as from EF, along with Egotistical Puckboy releasing next month. I’m disappointed but not surprised it wasn’t as enjoyable as I expected. I will say I’m excited for the other characters to get their stories. It’s already been pointed out but Trav and Rodriguez are definitely getting their story. The hints made too many appearances, if I’m being honest, but I’ll take what we can get.

Books that revolve around military and going on missions are not really my thing, but Iris was my favourite character in Pop Star, so I had to read it.

All the things I enjoyed:
- Iris - he's funny and caring and I loved him
- Saint – I really liked how his recovery and his place on the team were handled
- the banter between Iris and Saint
- the team members are all pretty great and I love their nicknames

Edit: Since I've been asked, I'm adding the reasons I didn't give this book a higher rating. I'll put them under the spoiler tag:

Even though the plot was unrealistic at times, I think it was a fun read overall.

It's been a while since I read an Eden Finley book... and this was not the book to restart.

I DNFed at 60% and skimmed to the end.

This book is VERY problematic because:

1. The book partly happens in a North African "imaginary country" which SURPRISE SURPRISE has Arab citizens/terrorists and the terrorists are *GASP* MUSLIM.

Dear authors...
Please refrain from the old song and dance of Arab terrorists and extremists who are out to kill all the good people of the world.

Know why? Because these extremists are not a product of our cultures. They are in fact a structure created by western white supremacists who hate everyone expect themselves. K?

Thanks!

Also this African American country? Who lives there? Where are the citizens? What's actually the point of using such a country when you don't intend to use it properly? Was this country supposed to be Libya? Yemen? Egypt? What??

GAWD this never ending stereotyping is PISSING ME OFF. You know, I try not to rant about books, but this is just plain offensive.

And I try not to compare authors because it's unfair, but in this case I'm entitled so here goes....

If you want to write about Arabs/Muslims RESPECTFULLY, take a page from Tal Bauer's books and characters. He wrote two of the most amazing Muslim/Arab characters EVER, who are also GAY and PRACTICING ISLAM( ie they pray, fast, belive in God...) and who are GOOD PEOPLE, and never once made me feel offended or lesser because of where I'm from. He researched, he learned, he was authentic and respectful.

P.S. I would make this same rant for any othor minority/ethnicity/ country that is ALWAYS used as a plot device in books.

Just because we're different doesn't mean we're less.

Oh and don't get me started on the CONSTANT BANTER and the DUDE BROS. BARF

RATING 4.5 STARS

Iris is book one in the brand new Mike Bravo Ops series by Eden Finley. This is only the second book I’ve read of Eden’s and I loved it! I love getting in on a new series with the first book and I couldn’t resist after reading the blurb of this one.

Meet Isaac “Iris” Griffin. Iris stands for I require intense supervision. He earned that nickname ten years ago in basic training and it stuck all these years. Iris is no longer in the military but works for the Mike Bravo team, a private black-ops team. He loves his job and lives for the adrenaline. It was on an operation to pull out a military team cornered by insurgents that it happened. He looked down into the face of a man he hadn’t seen since basic ten years ago. A man who was both his nemesis and his fantasy.

Brock “Saint” Harlow had given up all hope of survival when a face he never forgot appeared above him. Iris. Now he is his only tether to surviving. His voice, his touch are what gets him through. He has a long recovery road ahead of him and now Mike Bravo wants to give him another chance at life. A job doing what he loves. Only with the memories of what he’s been through, it’s still a struggle. Once again, it’s Iris that is there for him time and time again. Their chemistry is incredible. But Mike Bravo has a strict no fraternization rule. Saint has always been a rule follower but maybe, just this once, it’s time for him to take what he wants. And he wants Iris.

I loved these two. Together they definitely steamed up the pages. I loved watching the impact that Iris had on Saint and the way they depended on each other. Ten years ago, a spark was lit. But it wasn’t the right time yet. Now it is and these two were amazing. This book was full of sexy times, sweet moments, plenty of swoony moments, and also some intense suspenseful scenes. A little bit of everything, including plenty of snark.

At the end, the author tells us that Iris, his boss, Trav, and a couple of other familiar faces appeared in a previous book, Pop Star. I haven’t read that book but now am tempted to go back and grab it. I also can’t wait to see what’s next for this series. No matter who it is, I’m all in.

“I didn’t think it was possible to love someone as much as I crave forever with you.”

two competitive idiots who want to fuck each other and much as they want to one up each other? sign me tf up!

and when they try to one up each other in bed? im a goner. it’s the Ilya and Shane staple, so any other couple who does it, i automatically love. even Iris admits he loves the fight for control when having sex with a man... especially Saint.

this is a former-semi-rivals-to-forbidden-coworkers-to-lovers... i think? lol. ten years ago, Brock “Saint” Harlow and Issac “Iris” Griffen were the respective golden boy and class clown rivals of their training camp. they’d always crushed on each other while loathing everything the other stood for. now, reunited all of those old yet juicy feelings come rushing back but there’s one major rule: “no fraternising with coworkers”. so that’s where some of the forbidden aspect comes into play.

Saint breaks from the kiss. “You taste exactly how I imagined,” he growls.
“Like sarcasm and poor choices?”
“Like a mistake I’m making ten years too late.”

they were seriously funny together. their base, petulant humour just hit the spot and reflected their dynamic so perfectly, and Iris’ personality too. while Saint was a lil more serious but any time he was in the vicinity of Iris, the two of them were basically the same person in a slightly different font with the way they bickered and teased and pushed— i really enjoyed it.

Iris’ humour was spot on too. he wasn’t too OTT or obnoxious. he’s witty, sarcastic and lil annoying but in the best way possible.

“Race you home?” I say to Saint.
“Last one home bottoms tonight.”
“Deal.”
Atlas covers one ear with his hand, having to keep the other on the steering wheel. “Ah, la, la, la, la, la I don’t want to know.”
“See you soon,” I sing at Saint and then take out my comms. I turn to Atlas. “Drive slow.”

i adored Saint so much. his type of character i tend to relate to the most bcos i see so much of myself in him and his type. that constant haunting pressure to be the best, to be perfect bcos what’s the point if you’re not? i liked how he grew, battling his trauma and began to be openly vulnerable. i for sure had a soft spot for him... while Iris remained me so much of Beck😭 that’s not a bad thing at all bcos they’re definitely different, but he’s just super reminiscent of our Lord and Saviour Teddy Beckett.

there’s relatively little to no angst in this, but i think a lot of Eden’s books are like that? i do wish we’d gotten a lil more tension between them, have the build up be drawn out a bit longer bcos i felt like they gave in quicker than they should have? or just quicker than i was expecting. and i do wish the rivals (or former rivals) aspect had also been drawn out more bcos when these two were competing with each other? i was obsessed.

but it meant there was no unnecessary bullshit which i appreciated so much. drama for drama’s sake ruins a lot of books, so if the plot doesn’t require it, then why include it? so if you’re in the mood for a lower angst, funny read with just the right amount of smut and swoon? this book is ya guy.

“Is this really happening?”
“I could punch you to see if you’re dreaming if you want.”
“I think you’re supposed to pinch, not punch.”
I frown. “Where’s the fun in that?”
Saint’s eyes roll back into his head. “Okay, this is definitely happening, then. In no fantasy of mine would you be mouthing off. In fact, you wouldn’t be able to speak at all.”

the camaraderie of the Mike Bravo group was just perfect. you got a sense of everyone without it being overwhelming, in addition to it not stifling the main romance between Saint and Iris. the banter, the brotherhood and the found family was executed exactly how i think side characters should be portrayed – bcos they’re side characters for a reason. Eden gave us a lil flavour of what’s to come with future books and nailed it.

bcos now i need Trav and Rogue ASAP! the tension they gave off was truly ✨delicious✨

“I spring into action. “Atlas, Zeus, you’ve got four minutes to carry out the mission and then bring the love of my life home.”
As if rehearsed, countless voices fill the room through the speaker. “Your what?”

***I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.***

So much Fun!!! Loved Iris and Saint, they are perfect together with their amazing chemistry that they try to ignore while working their dangerous missions.

Iris is a fast-paced story featuring two members, Iris and Saint, of a Mike Bravo, a Black Ops team that have a shared past that has left many feelings that are finally being explored.

Iris is the confident, cocky, and highly competitive member of Mike Bravo who is forced to interact with his newest team member, Saint who is extremely serious and recovering from an injury from a previous mission. They both have a shared past, with unresolved tension that leads to many scenes with lingering feelings that are bubbling along the surface.

Overall this was such an enjoyable read that has me anxiously anticipating more in this fast-paced world with such fun and exciting characters. Cannot wait for the next entry!!!

Iris is a cocky bastard, but during basic training he meets his match in Saint. Fast forward a decade or so later, and Iris finds Saint near death in a cave. Initially, Iris doesn't recognize Saint. The man is bloody and broken, and Iris just wants to get him to safety.

Once Saint recovers and joins Mike Brave Ops, he's not the same man Iris knew. Saint can't remember what happened during the ambush that took the life of his teammates. He's lost strength, and training exercises leave him exhausted.

But what hasn't changed is the chemistry between the men. This is one sexually charged story.

No romance novel featuring "black ops" is going to be realistic, and I'm okay with that.

My issue with the story was that the pacing was really slow. The first half of the book dragged for me to the point I considered DNF.

I'm glad I stuck around though because the second half was more interesting. Toward the end, the Mike Bravo operatives return to the (fictional) African country where Saint almost died to capture the head of a terrorist organization (think Bin Laden but worse).

Another issue was the OTT banter between the MCs. No one talks like that ALL. THE. DAMN. TIME. The rest of the Mike Bravo team was the same, even the sole woman, Angel. The secondary characters, in general, were cookie-cutter. To be honest, even the MCs, especially Iris, didn't strike me as particularly complex characters.

Trav is the boss man, and his story is next. That was really, really obvious from the multiple clues the author dropped. Subtlety is dead.

3 slightly disappointed stars. What’s wrong with me? Everyone seems to love this more than I did! Ever since meeting Iris in Pop Star, I was sooo excited to finally read his story - then a snarky, fun side character for whose story I couldn’t wait - I even had the release date marked in my phone. I just dig reading about competent, confident/cocky men and the whole black-ops deal sounded fun. Maybe it’s because I hyped this up too much in my mind, maybe I’m just in a mood today, but this just isn’t as mind-blowingly amazing as I wanted it to be.

Isaac or “Iris” - an acronym for “I Require Intense Supervision” - is part of an LGBTQ private black-ops firm called Mike Bravo and is instrumental in saving Brock “Saint” from another Black ops mission gone bad. The focus lies on them getting their pretty angst-free romance on, with the action sadly taking a back seat to the MM romance. Instead, you’ll find lots of steam - maybe a little too much of it. I would have preferred some more plot, maybe another mission.

It was still an enjoyable read; I just wasn’t that invested in the characters as I was expecting to be. Part of it was that I had trouble keeping the voice of two MCs apart. I’m actually really put out that I didn’t love this.

I also happen to know Finley can affect me a lot more! Hope the next installment in this series will hit my sweet spot.

FYI: You don’t need to read or reread Pop Star - this is fine as a standalone.

Sex, snark, and fluff don’t
Work with pretend Africa
And a body count.

I keep coming back to this review and my rating. I generally only haiku, but once again (and because as far as I can tell, no-one else has mentioned it), I'm here to talk about the pretend Africa.

Africa is a huge continent, with 54 countries with populations ranging from over 200M to under 100K. It has multiple indigenous religious traditions, had advanced civilizations long before Europe did, and encompasses diverse geographic and ecological regions. Many countries and regions have two or more official languages. It was colonized over a period of several hundred years by peoples from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Four regions are still "dependencies" of European countries.

Rather than situate Iris in one of these countries, Finley makes one up: "Udoola" in Northern Africa with ties to Muslim extremists. Though romance novels have a long tradition of making up countries so that the MCs can fall in love with princes and princesses, or be long-lost heirs to the throne, this is different.

There are no Udoolans in the narrative, beyond a few villagers mentioned at the very end of the book. "Udoola" just hosts some terrorists, some US soldiers, and the Mike Bravo team. Finley trades in stereotypes of Africa as an undifferentiated continent in order to give her book a scary, wild, dangerous setting where bad things easily happen. There's nothing governing the US military, and no discussion of "Udoola" as a sovereign nation. And unlike all those contemporary fairy tales (Jude Deveraux's Lanconia, for example, or Alyssa Cole's #ownvoices Relectant Royals), there's no world building or history to "Udoola," just a generic, violent, impoverished African location.

Let me say it again: there are no Udoolans in the narrative. This is a country that hosts evil terrorists and the knights in shining camo who stop them.

Perhaps Finley wanted a fictionalized country in order to avoid negatively depicting a real place, though "Udoola" has strong parallels to Libya. Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, for example, has an unnamed Central American country for, I suspect, this reason. (And that's also problematic.) Unfortunately, rather than simply not naming the country, Finley makes one up. By avoiding one set of negative stereotypes, Finley offers another.

I love Eden Finley's books: Fake Boyfriend is a fabulous series; Popstar is wicked fun, CU Hockey is delightful. Her early Steele Brothers series is surprisingly deep. Generally, she writes nuanced characters even in a fantasy world of abs and athleticism. In her books, everyone gets happier when they live out and proud. I am a happy member of her FB group and the CU FB group she runs with Saxon James. I can't wait for Egotistical Puckboy.

But this book is a problem. I hope Finley apologizes for this problematic representation and corrects it going forward with the Mike Bravo series. I hope we all think about the way representation--even in fluffy, funny, sexy romance novels with a guaranteed HEA--matter.

With her new series, Eden skillfully balances the humour her books are known for with the tensions that come along with a mission heavy ex-military action adventure.

Mike Bravo is a team of specialists working outside of any Government control, they're private contractors who we last saw in her Famous series.

Iris is the smart mouth, the cocky guy with the ego - and the skills - to back up all his big talk. But he's rocked when they find a guy from his basic training ten years earlier while on an extraction mission.

Saint is barely alive, his black ops team dead around him, when he's rescued by a guy he was crushing on back in his closeted days.

The reconnection story line is done so well, both men have always been attracted to the other but Iris thought Saint was straight. The UST is tangible throughout the opening chapters as both men come to terms with their new situation.

The banter between them is laced with sexual bravado and eventually the adrenaline following a recon job boils over into a seriously hot makeout session.

I think what I loved best about this book though is that there is zero relationship drama, no angsting, miscommunication or lack of talking.

All the hard beats come from Saint trying to remember what went wrong on his mission, dealing with probable PTSD and the ongoing case to bring down a terrorist holed up in an (fictional) African country

The pacing is cracking as the narrative builds up to another mission and Saint has some hard choices to make.

I absolutely adored them as a pairing. They're strong willed individuals, but both have tender spots just waiting to find the right man to show them to.

The sexy times are bunsen burner hot, but filled with intimacy and emotional vulnerability from the off. They have a connection which bounces from the page.

Add in a crew of additional characters who are all awesome too and who throw up potential for their own snarky romances left, right and the very sexy centre of big boss Trav and the Government spook who he has clearly got history with and all I can say is "bring it on!"

From the minute I picked it up, to the second I put it down Iris and Saint put a smile on my face. I can't wait for more.

It was mostly okay. But everything was just surface level and just not enough. Not enough laughs, not enough feelings, not enough suspense.
The banter was funny, but not enough to make me actually laugh.
The sex was hot, but not enough to turn me on.
The missions were okay, but I wasn’t stressed or invested in them. Everything was OTT and unrealistic.

The two MCs were so similar (despite their nicknames Iris and Saint indicating they are opposites) that I kept forgetting who’s POV I was reading.

I was also disappointed that although we get several “babysitting pop stars” references, we don’t get to see Brix. Even a phone call would have been nice.

By 72% I got really bored and started skimming. I still made it to the end, but now I can’t remember anything after a night of sleep. And I don’t really care.

Ok this turned out way more negative than I thought. I’ll probably still read the next book, especially if it’s Trav’s.

I AM SORRY. I really wanted to like it.

I have to say that I went into this with quite high expectations, probably unfairly high, as I can't say this book even remotely met them, but it's not like I didn't enjoy it. I did.

This book definitely has its cute moments and a lot of fun banter, while also having some action-packed scenes; I actually would have liked it if there had been more of the latter though, as these scenes were few and far between.

I liked the chemistry Iris and Saint had, but I wish their tension would have been build a little bit better over a longer period of time. For example, I think it would have been cool if maybe Iris wouldn't have had a crush on Saint back in the day, and rather have Iris warm up to Saint after thinking he was an arsehole 10 years ago. I think Saint always having had a crush on Iris was okay though, it made sense. That part was even kind of cute and swoon-worthy. I just don't think it's very logical for Iris to have always had a crush on Saint when he thought younger Saint to be arrogant, rude and homophobic.. Like ????? Why have a crush on him then? So, yea, in my opinion, that part was a wasted opportunity for some stretched out tension, and more of a slow-burn.
Apart from this, I did enjoy their dynamic, though. They bounced off of each other well, and seemed to genuinely care for one another: I loved Saint's adoration and admiration for Iris, and I also loved that Iris cared about and looked out for Saint when he needed it. It was sweet.
However, I did wish there were less sex scenes between them, because it kind of got boring and also resulted in few interactions between them that weren't of a sexual nature, thus giving their relationship less of an emotional punch.

When it comes to the actual plotline of this novel, I wish there had been a little bit more focus on it, as I actually enjoyed seeing their missions and the interactions between the other team members.
I am already looking forward to a book about either Trav, Atlas, Angel or Zeus. I think Trav will probably be next though, and that's actually the one I am most excited about, so that would be great. Fingers crossed!

I absolutely adored this.

It was such a strong first outing in this series by this lovely author.

We first met Iris in the Pop Star series in the first book, and it feels like all fans of this author have been waiting for this series and this book about Iris, who jumped off the pages in that book and definitely stood out.

His nickname literally stands for "I need intense supervision" which is hilarious. But totally fitting. His real name is Isaac, but no one calls him that. And we learn in this that Saint actually came up with that name, or at least the idea for the name, in basic training 10 years prior. Because Iris and Saint knew each other prior to the start of this book in their 3 months or so of basic training at 18.

10 years later, Iris is out of the military and working for Mike Bravo (which we find out in this stands for Motherfucking Badasses lol), a black ops organization, that isn't officially a part of the government, but who is sanctioned to do black ops type of things, things the government doesn't mind them doing, or even asking them to do it.

The organization is run by Trav (who I think the second book might be about. We already know who his LI will be, and his is the only clear LI from this book, so I'm assuming his book will be next. I'll be surprised if it isn't), and it made up of LGBT+ men and one woman, except for the one guy who is straight. What a nice turnaround ;)

At the start of this, a Mike Bravo team is sent out to retrieve or help or save - they don't know the situated yet - a military team, that is also part of a black ops organization, only it is officially a part of the government, and a lot more strict and rule oriented.

When there, they run into basically a blood bath of the team, and all seem to be dead....except for one, who is hanging on by a thread after literally being riddled with bullets.

That is Saint, who holds on because of Iris, who he recognizes (Iris doesn't until they can take his helmet and goggles off at the base) and who urges him to stay alive.

After 6 months of recovery, Saint comes to work with Mike Bravo, only now his body isn't what it once was, and he still needs to worth on his physical condition as well as his mental condition.

He went through something horrible traumatic, but can't really remember much of it all. As if his brain his protecting him from the horror of it. But even so, he still has a little bit of PTSD, even if he doesn't want to admit it.

But Trav doesn't do that whole "grin and bear it and say everything is fine" toxic masculinity schtick - which is all Saint has been taught, and is hard to let go of - and so doesn't let Saint get away with saying he's fine.

He still needs time to get to peak physical condition again as well as mentally as well.

Also, after his situation becomes more permanent and he needs a place to live...and when he turns down every place, Iris offers to have him stay with him. At that time they already gave into each other sexually, but agreed on it being a one time thing, and think they can just stay friends...

Famous last words, of course!

I loved these two together. Their chemistry was SO good, and they just fit together seamlessly. Saint is more serious in general than Iris, who is usually the 'class clown' as it were, always ready with a quip or a joke, but we get to see in this when Iris is serious as well. He takes things seriously when it matters. Also interesting that Iris is such a goofball when he is one of the guys who doesn't have any family at all - we don't get to really find out what happens to his parents, just that they're dead.

But at the same time, we get to learn more about Iris, and that while he is overall a 'funny' guy and tends not to take things seriously, that he does want a relationship, and he does get lonely, and wants more from his life. He also treats sex seriously, and is a perfect gentleman with Saint, especially when he's still self conscious about his naked body and isn't quite ready to take his shirt off with Iris.

It, of course, eventually makes Saint feel comfortable enough to take his shirt off around Iris, because of that trust building between them, that Iris starts by never pushing Saint for more than what he's ready for.

These two were so adorable, hot, sexy, sweet and romantic together. Their banter was top notch - Saint could certainly serve the jokes and sarcasm back at Iris plenty - and when they got serious they were melt worthy together. They rounded each other out perfectly.

I just adored this whole story. The plot was well done, it kept me interesting, and I read this within a day, couldn't put it down because it was just so interesting, and meeting all the Mike Bravo characters we're gonna be getting love stories for, and getting this wonderful romance at the center.

I HIGHLY recommend this. It was just the right amount of humor, angst, and fluff. I love these two so much that I already can't wait to see little snippets of them happy, together and in love in future books. (a short story here or there wouldn't hurt too ;)).

A definite BIG two thumbs up from me! 🥰

DNF @ 63% 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I tried kids, I really did, but this was just SO BAD. And bad for several reasons at that.

🚫This will probably be somewhat spoiler-ish so read with caution🚫

This story follows Isaac “Iris” Griffin, a bisexual former-military-turned-mercenary testosterone filled meathead, who is part of a guns-for-hire military contractor group called Mike Bravo. Mike Bravo aka “Motherf-cking Badasses” (🙄) aka the live-action Team America: World Police group. This is literally them I’m not joking!

description

Anyway Iris goes to a fictionalized terrorist country in Africa to save a US Military Black Ops group and finds Brock “Saint” Harlow hanging on by a thread. Let me just pause right here for a quick PSA:

✨If you make up pretend terrorist countries and people in an effort to not sound racist and offend, perhaps try not to use so many direct references and harmful stereotypes because it will in fact still be racist.✨

Alright, so Saint and Iris knew each other in basic training 10 years prior and apparently had hard-ons for each other both physically and competitively. Saint having recovered from near death gets discharged from the military without his knowledge (lol ok) and joins Mike Bravo. Saint was supposed to be a buttoned-up brown noser type who always follows the rules and I guess that’s true? Honestly there’s no real consistency with that characterization, but he was less annoying than Iris so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Iris is a walking, talking cliché and the opposite (I mean I guess?) of Saint. He is dudebro to the MAX. His personality is basically “F-ck yeah guns! F-ck yeah getting laid! F-ck yeah killing people!” and that’s pretty much it. He’s supposed to be 28 years old and sounds like a fresh 18-year-old. The constant smart ass remarks and jokes personally got very old for me very quickly. His relationship with Saint felt very surface level and juvenile. It’s honestly hard to really comment on the plot because it felt so superficial, I can’t really take any of it seriously. I finally had to give up when we got into the sex scenes and I realized it was going to be the same dudebro-y commentary even through that. Also them making mint and living the life off of committing war crimes wasn’t that sexy surprisingly.

Look this is not meant to be a thinking book, which I can understand and appreciate, this was just very much not for me. Take my opinion with a grain of salt as I’m sure many people will love and have fun with us, I unfortunately was just not one of them.

[3.25] (偷偷把评分改成三星,你们啥都没看到😉)not my rpg gaming a** thinking dp meant “damage points” for a whole five minutes 💀 i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again, sometimes i’m just too pure for this world 😔

this was a pretty decent intro to the series: Iris was an absolute hoot, Saint was more than relatable with his struggles as a perfectionist, the banter & humor between the entire team were on point, and BIG yes to rejecting any of that toxic masculinity bullshirt! on the other hand (perhaps a case of misplaced expectations), i personally felt there was just too much sex and too little suspenseful action/general plot, detracting from my enjoyment of the middle third, and the pov voices started to blend for me a bit too. as for the fictionalized country aspect, other reviews explain it better than me, but the more i thought about it, the more it did feel like a cop-out. i wonder how this will be approached moving forward 🤔

all that being said, i’ll still be eagerly awaiting the next installment (Trav & Rodriguez???) because i’m a diehard Eden Finley fangirl.

bonus question: i know technically members of the Mike Bravo team can’t choose their own names, but what would yours be? you can call me “Manatee” out of my love for these precious sea cows 🤣

I didn't like the popstar's series, so why did I picked this one? Mystery... 🙄🙄

Spoiler alert: I shouldn't have.

My reasons/rant:
1. They did with Africa the same thing Hijacked blablabla did with my country: they were badly represented and not used respectfully.
2. Iris and Saint were the same character, couldn't tell them apart, didn't care.
2.1 Saint was supposed to be serious and a perfectionist, we got the opposite so the blurb is misleading.
2.2 Iris was what the blurb promised, but it was too much, it became cringey and annoying.
3. Too much sex, cero plot.
4. Mike Bravo was created by Trev, who apparently is God because he can do shit in an instant, not believable.
5. The "we the best, we have the last tech, we are better than the military" attitude was stupid, used too frequently and just annoying.
6. Mike Bravo is a place where queer people can feel safe, because in the military they are not well accepted. I felt that the author tried to talk about inclusion, but not all heterosexuals are bad people or dangerous to queer community, so the lack of them means that the point Eden tried to make in the first place was invalid.
7. Who the fuck has the best op in the world with such a small team? 😓

Ott, Ott, stupid shit, macho shit, nope. Baaad.

DNF’d this one hard. Was this book funded by a grant for US Imperialism propaganda? Our main character is an adrenaline junkie with massive impulse control but he’s super good at killing and loves the excitement of it so that’s a good thing? Also, lines like this: “Mike Bravo would be targets for many organizations who hate the US and the freedoms we stand for.” Dude, I’m pretty sure the black ops jobs you’re doing secretly in African countries don’t feel like “freedom” from the African perspective. This is horseshit. Also, the idea that Saint (truly!) would be discharged from the army without his consent or signature while he’s in a coma is ludicrous. Also, “oh hello, welcome back from the coma, you have a new job now and you work for me”? What? Finally, the premise for this series seems to be that Mike Bravo is a company that exists as a place where LGBTQ+ former military personnel get to kill and play with explosives without having to put up with homophobia. I mean, are we celebrating that? It’s like fixing the imperial army in Star Wars by hiring more women storm troopers. You are not solving the right problem. Clearly, I am not the intended audience for this book but I honestly can’t read another word of this garbage. I don’t care if these people fall in love. I don’t want to read about them dropping out of helicopters to randomly kill people they’ve called terrorists. Why did I download this?

This was an easy and entertaining read, good amount of action, good chemistry and a few good jokes. I knew I liked Iris from Popstar book and I’m glad he found his HEA with Saint, both characters were great and enjoyed their journey, excited to keep reading this series

"We're a family here, and I don't know where I'd be if Trav hadn't recruited me from the army. I'd probably be working minimum wage and getting antsy about not having access to explosives."

I totally loved Iris which is the latest MM offering from the wonderful Eden Finley.

🔥 Opposites attract
🔥 Second chance
🔥 MM romance
🔥 Black ops action
🔥 Steamy chemistry between the MCs
🔥 HEA

We first met Isaac 'Iris' Griffin and his black ops team, Mike Bravo, in Pop Star and the lovable, cocky, snarky, adrenaline junkie finally gets his own book.

Mike Bravo are a private black ops contractor of sorts, under the steady hand of Travis West, and they take on the work that the government can't or won't undertake. The team are sent on a mission to try and extract a military team missing in action. The only find one survivor, Brock 'Saint' Harlow, who just so happens to have been a major crush of Iris' ten years before in basic training. But Saint was closeted back then and Iris didn't explore his feelings.

Not long into Saint's recuperation and becoming part of the MB team, the boys get the chance to explore those feelings together - despite fraternisation amongst the Mike Bravo team being strictly off limits...

"I don't know about you, but instead of curing me of my adolescent crush, hooking up with you has only made me want you more."

Iris and Saint are fabulous together, their chemistry is off the chart steamy and the action scenes are tense and well-written, as you'd expect from Eden Finley.

Recommended.

I'm so disappointed, I really wanted to enjoy this as I've been patiently waiting for this book since Pop Star released in 2020. Sadly, Iris's character did not live up to the hype.

The story was just boring? Saint and Iris were written so similarly, I just couldn't get a feel for either of them. I skimmed probably 75% of it and ended up reading a few of the cute scenes (love confession, epilogue).

Also, lazy writing/research of using 'Africa' + a fake country with stereotypes of terrorism was disappointing. Thank you to @Elena for pointing out the issue, her review gives a much better explanation which I recommend checking out.

Hopefully the next book in this series will be better.

4.5 ⭐️ / I regularly feel like Eden Finley struggles with setup. Most of her books take a minute to find their footing before everything clicks in act two. Not here. This is the most explosive start she’s ever written, and it never lets up. Iris is easily one of her most addictive, binge-worthy books. Maybe it’s the action-forward setting, maybe it’s the relief of finally getting a story where “coming out” isn’t the central conflict, but this feels close to perfect.

Iris and Saint are phenomenal MMCs, the spice is genuinely top tier (hello, vibrator double penetration), and the set pieces are thrilling. My one note is that the forced-proximity and forbidden aspects feel underutilized. It's resolved so quickly after the midpoint that it ends up distracting from the much richer character work waiting in the final act.

Still, after just one book, I can already tell this might become my favorite solo Eden Finley project. I kind of want to start the next one immediately.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

Saint breaks from the kiss. “You taste exactly how I imagined,” he growls. “Like sarcasm and poor choices?” “Like a mistake I’m making ten years too late.”

This book is such an easy and entertaining reread, and I think that was my third read/listen. Iris and Saint are very cute together, and I love that they used to be rivals and sort of enemies, but without actual hatred or anything like that. They just butted heads in boot camp while secretly crushing on each other. They end up on the same black ops/militia team, and hilarity (and hotness) ensues.

Iris is 100% OTT as a character, but he’s so sweet and kind as well that it doesn’t bother me. Even his frequent talk about sleeping with almost anything and anyone didn’t really bother me, lol. That’s just Iris. He enjoys people, but he always wanted that one person who could deal with his job and be there for him at the end of the day when he got home. He finally finds that in Saint, even though it’s hard to believe they could ever be right for each other, lol. Sometimes opposites really do attract. Saint is exactly that. The goodest boy. A loyal sweetheart who deserves all the good things.

“Race you home?” I say to Saint. “Last one home bottoms tonight.” “Deal.”

There’s plenty of plot and action, and a lovely romance. Can definitely recommend if that’s your jam.

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: I liked the family feel of the team and the side characters. I also actually liked the confessions of deeper feelings/mushy moments for once!

The Not-So-Good: The depth of the characters and overall story. I think we could’ve delved much deeper into the mcs’ pasts (with and without each other), the ptsd, or their connection to each other past sex. It felt very surface level.

The Bad: The ending wasn’t bad per se, but it definitely wasn’t good either.

Overall: This was just alright for me. Though it wasn’t quite as deep as I would’ve liked, I still enjoyed some parts. I will probably continue on with this series when I’m looking for something light. It’d be great for those that want a low conflict sexy mm book!

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Iris and Saint’s story. Iris is on an extraction mission when he ends up saving Saint’s life. They were in basic training together and bumped heads because Iris was always the goof and Saint was always the perfect soldier. When reunited ~10 years later, they both instantly feel their secret crushes from the past return for each other. There are some moments for recovery, some serious and suspenseful scenes, and some sexy times…and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Iris and Saint’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, though they both had secret crushes on each other in the past.

H1 (Hero #1) rating: 3.5 stars. Iris. I liked how he was a jokester until Saint needed him, but then he was supportive and caring.

H2 (Hero #2) rating: 3 stars. Saint. He was struggling with his new reality after being hurt and I appreciated how he came to care for the h, but otherwise he was just okay for me.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Not really

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends in a pretty okay place for the two with what I would call a HFN ending , but I wanted much more.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I love when a supposed playboy actually has a heart of gold 🥹 It’s one of my most favorite micro tropes and Iris (Isaac) was all that and more. He was so attentive, caring and careful with Saint (Brock). He was so snarky and bratty and I loved him so much he was fun but he had so much depth to him as well, he was just super likable to me. Saint was just as sneakily snarky as Iris and matched him in everything, including being the greenest flag of a boyfriend.

These two were so sweet to each other and exactly what the other needed while also being so similar. They also had wonderful, immaculate COMMUNICATION like two grown men should have and I really appreciated that they never held back their relationship by not talking to each other about how they felt.

I really liked the background story and supporting characters, every character felt well developed and unique. The world building here was actually pretty detailed and an interesting background for the love story. I just loved Iris and Saint so much and hope I love the rest of the couples as well!

Oh. My. God. If I could give this one 10 stars, I would!
Iris is ADHD on steroids and perfectly named and I adore him. He’s the class clown, alright. He’s fast and strong, really good at his job. And he lives for it. Saint is the by-the-books follower of orders. All his family is military and they expect nothing less from him. The two guys have history. And holy cow, they have chemistry that is off the charts!
It’s a great story, too. Mike Bravo gets things done when no one else can. These people are the best there are. They’re family and stand by each other, no matter what.
As with all Eden’s books, Iris is very well written. The characters are very real individuals. All different, all fleshed out. The two main characters are pretty much polar opposites but that just makes it hotter!
I devoured it in one go, could not put it down. I loved it, and I can’t wait for the next book!
Princess Smoochy Face, indeed!
