They told her she had a smile for everyone. A gift for lifting everyone's mood. Now she wants to tear into anyone who looks at her sideways.
Emily fled to space to escape parents who’d become insufferable when her grandmother left her the considerable family fortune. On board the space station Shangris she thrived. Her upbeat, friendly nature shone and she could brighten any crew member’s day. It didn’t matter (much) that none of them truly knew her, or sought her out for friendship. Then the station disintegrated around her, leaving her confused and in a coma for six months. She woke up in alien space, her emotions loud and swinging like a pendulum from anger to sadness, staying far away from the joy she used to feel. The only one she can’t stay mad at is an emotionless cyborg.
Turo never thought he’d be gifted with a rhun mate, but when he saw Emily’s broken body on the floor of the crumbling space station, he knew he was hers. He spent six months watching over her, gathering every bit of information he could from the other survivors. When the med pod releases her, it’s not the sweet, happy female he’s been described. She comes out spitting fire and demanding an equal level of emotion from him. His unusual nanites are no help, and he’s left wondering if his lack of emotion will cause him to lose her forever.
Complicating their situation are a space pet, a sabotage plot, and a trip across space with no guaranteed return ticket.
This novella is the fourth in the Ka'atari Warriors series, which should be read in order. It has a guaranteed happily ever after and no cliff hangers.
Emily and Turo Severely injured in the attack on the Terran Space Station, Emily spent six months in a coma. Awakening on a different word, and being faced with aliens she had no idea even existed, is a bit of a culture shock. Then there is the trauma of her ordeal and the nightmares that stemmed from it. Beside her is Turo, or as Emily calls him, Adonis. A cyborg since birth, he struggles to understand emotions, but is called to be beside Emily since she is his Rhun. Emily is determined to go back to Earth, but can she ever accept what Turo has to offer?
* * * This fourth book in the series, picks up where the third left off, and introduces a new couple- it is NOT a standalone book, but it is a complete story in and of itself. As a sci-fi romance, it has an alien hero, a traumatized Terran heroine, and a few other alien species (including cute alien pets). There are sex scenes, and it rates about 3-4/5 on the spicy scale (descriptive sex scenes), so definitely +18 on the audience. It’s told in third person point of view, and alternates between the hero and heroine. There’s plenty of action, adventure… and despite the distinct lack of battle scenes, Emily does manage to get herself hurt a few times!
I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series so far, but I think Turo is my favourite hero yet. Emily starts off being somewhat annoying, and though it really is understandable, it doesn’t make it easy to like her. She does redeem herself somewhat later though, and the addition of Mawdrang helps a lot.
This is an enthralling series, and one I’m happy to recommend as a great series for sci-fi romance fans to read. The stories are on the shorter side, so perfect for when you have limited time, and it’s not so packed with NSFW scenes that you’d have to keep hiding the book. The overarching story is intriguing, and I’m looking forward to reading more in this world!
This sci-fi romance was fun. The hero was sweet and funny in his cluelessness about emotions, and I appreciated that this heroine spent a lot of this novel as an emotional rage monster mess. I feel like romance needs more heroines uninterested in being “sweet” or “reasonable” or “accommodating”. I do wish this story was longer. The author has a gripping authorial voice, and I didn’t really get to enjoy the full extent of her writing chops with a story this short.
I’ve enjoyed many of the Ka’atari Warrior books but Turo not so much. Why? Because it felt unfinished; too many questions left unanswered…not sure Emily and Turo really got their happy ever after. Example: why are the Scozid trying to capture Emily specifically; did Earth accept Turo and the other aliens? Probably the lead in to another book or series, but the ending fell flat for me.
I enjoyed this. Glad Emily was finally awake. But she wasn’t the same Emily everyone thought they knew. Turo her Rhun was like a cyborg but oh so much more. The end feels like a cliffhanger. Please Kenzie Kelly don’t leave us hanging. I hope there is another book in this series. Those stinking Scozid need to get their just dessert.
The wait is over. Emily has finally woken up and she is not a happy camper. This was probably my favorite book in the series so far. Turo and Emily are my favorite duo. I can't wait to meet more characters in this series. The Chief needs his book.
Turo and Emily was a great way to end this series. It's been 6 months since the attack on the Shangris an Emily has come out of a coma. Out of 9 survivors, several have been returned home to earth. I wish the would have been more!
An emotional rollercoaster awaits Emily as she finally wakes from her injuries. A complete personality change but Turo doesn't mind. He just wants to find a way to make her happy.
Good story. Needs a bit more work. Emily has issues that we're only touched on. Would have loved a bit more interaction with her "pet". Short and sweet read. HEA kind of. Next book!
