Pirates of Britannia #39

The Sea Rover's Curse

Rate this book
A curse that’s lasted centuries and a legacy restored.

Precious Cargo...

After a childhood spent orphaned on the streets of revolutionary Paris, Merryn de Marais took to a life of plunder on the high seas to aid the Jacobin cause. But now there’s a new mission firing her spirit. Her ship is heading for the island of Lundy off southwest England, once owned by her ancestor, Sir William de Marisco. If Merryn can break the curse that has vexed sea rovers for centuries and find the treasure trove William buried there, she can save her beloved grand-père from being executed by Napoleon’s brutal secret police.

Sleeping with the enemy...
Captain Christopher—Kit—Lambrick, once of the British Royal Navy, leads the guarding of Lundy against piracy and foreign invaders. When a ship founders off the island’s coast, he discovers amongst the wreckage the most intriguing cargo he’s ever encountered—a half-drowned, beautiful young Frenchwoman. As Kit watches over this mysterious mermaid while she thrashes with fever, he’s drawn to her.

Yet, his duty lies with the defence of the realm, and no matter how much his heart yearns, he must resist her. For she could be a pirate or a spy.

Addicted to history and romance, Katherine spent the better part of her childhood roaming the globe as an Army brat. Then while attending college, she was swept off her feet by a military officer. Yes, reader she married him, and they continued traveling the world. Four children, two Labradors and three cats later, Katherine put down roots in the south. Where, at last, she pursued her lifelong passion of creating vivid stories that came calling with abandon. Adventure. Mayhem. Swashbuckling heroes. Her books are pure escapism at heart.

Enter the world of the Pirates of Britannia and the descendent of a man, who had hidden the treasure on Lundy Island. Growing up with the tales of her ancestor, Merryn had determined at eight years old she would find the treasure because "Whatever is lost can always be found."

What Merryn was to find, as she did indeed attempt to get onto Lundy Island, was that Kit Lambrick and his men where the keepers of the island. There to defend it against those trying to get a foothold in attacking England.

As Merryn is shipwrecked, she is rescued by Kit, and the adventure begins!! Pirates, lost treasures, old curses and the writing of Katherine Bone, make this a story not to be missed!!

The Sea Rover's Curse by Katherine Bone is a heart-pounding tale of pirates and bad guys. Merryn grew up at her grandfather's knew, hearing tales of her illustrious fore-bears, most particularly Sir William de Marisco and how a man he had saved, Ivor, had proven to be a coward and led King Henry's men to the only place on Lundy Island, which could be breached, resulting in the capture of Sir William and his men and their eventual execution. Oh, the unfairness of it all! The betrayal! A she grew and her life changed, she was ever steadfast in her belief of the unjust treatment and the treasure he had left on the island. She had read and studied. She had watched a horrible man killed her parents. Now greedy men were holding her beloved grandfather in prison and she must find the treasure in order to save him. She hired a crew for her vessel, but sadly they all disappeared, but Francois was right there. He helped her hire a new crew. He helped her plan. He didn't save her life when the vessel ran aground. That was Kit Lambrick, the captain on Lundy Island.

This story was told in flashbacks, much of it. It was a love story, but we concentrated more on the larger story. The one of avarice, self-aggrandizement, and misplaced loyalty. Merry, for all her worldliness was extremely naive. She took things at face value and believed in the wrong people. She was a fighter and a believer. That got her through. Kit was a loner. He had been betrayed in the past and was wont to let it happen again. The plot was a simple one, but at that, things happened that were unexpected and threw the story a different direction. It became obvious who could be trusted and who could not. For some the realization came too late. It was a cunning story and full of the history of Lundy Island, still there, and important, today.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Sea Rover's Curse by DragonMedia, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #dragonmedia #katherinebone #thesearoverscurse

Pirates, treasure, love....what more could you ask for?!! I so enjoyed this story written by Katherine Bone, this author never disappoints with her seafaring stories. Kit and Merryn's characters captured my heart, each have lost and gone through so much and yet have so much more to give.

When Kit rescues Merryn from a shipwreck near the island he lives on, little does he know what her true intentions are. Merryn has only had one goal in life for years...to find the treasure her ancestor buried on the island of Lundy and to break the curse that has caused so many deaths. As the two get to know each other and hearts get involved, you just know heartbreak will soon follow. This story is filled with adventure and I had a hard time putting the book down until I'd finished it.

Well done, Lady Katherine, well done:)

Loved it!!

I loved this story and I’m very glad I stuck with it until the end. I have to admit I was beginning to want to pull my hair out for probably the first 40%. I felt the author over did the thinking our mermaid was going through. I realized she wanted to get the point across that she was terribly conflicted and extremely upset over her grandfather and the situation before her. But, it went on and on and I was more than ready to get on with the story. Once it began progressing I was happy and thoroughly enjoyed the story. The author is amazing in her descriptive abilities and she writes with depth in all she says. She’s very good! The characters, their emotions, the sea, the island, the war, everything was written profoundly! I’m really impressed with her talent and her knowledge of all these things. I loved the ending!

Too much second-guessing, lamenting and gnashing of teeth from hero and heroine. Not enough dialogue

Seriously, pages and pages of thoughts then one sentence of dialogue, or sometimes just a word or two. I don't know French so I didn't know what the French words meant. The metaphorical descriptions became tedious. Very little action until the end of the book. I'm usually easily entertained but I was bored, ready to finish halfway through.

A tale of two persons from opposing sides: Merryn from France and Kit from England. A woman and a man at odds about trusting each other. Could they allow themselves to be open to affection and love, even with all the mistrust?

The narrative started off as a "wreckers" tale of a shipwreck on the rocky coast. But it turns out to be more a hundreds year old buried treasure sort of story! There's a lot of shadowy terrain creeping, figures lurking in the fog, and some sword fighting!

Interesting mystery involving a family curse, pirates, a difficult island to get ship into harbor without sinking it, betrayal, and love. Good mystery, strong female lead, but not necessarily in touch with reality. She may be too trusting of some evil companions. 🥰 Good short read to start off the Pirates of Britannia series, book 1. 👍🏼

Though the book was decently written it was filled with too much inner dialogue; 23 pages of descriptions, inner thoughts and no conversation besides the one in her head. It looked to be a great storyline, however, when there is no interaction between the couple, nor anyone else, its begins to feel like the author padded the book in order to accomplish the word count.

Pirates

Merryn and Kit 's story is original and interesting. I was on pins and needles to discover where the story was headed. It wasn't anything like I expected. I enjoyed it very much.

Good adventure story

I enjoyed this book. I think it took a long time to tell the story and it ended suddenly. I like a epilogue.
