Finding Love in Positano

Heartbroken and in desperate need of a vacation, Marci James heads to the Amalfi Coast to pack up her godfather, Richard’s, antique shop. As is most often the case with this kind of undertaking, she discovers that it’s a bigger task than she’d anticipated and welcomes the help of the enigmatic Nico Romano. As you’d expect from a gorgeous young Italian, he wines her and dines her and soon she’s chasing the dream of a happy life with someone she loves. When they uncover a big family secret it has the potential to ruin more than Marci and Nico’s happiness.
While I agree with some reviews that this was not one of my favourite Coleman reads for the same reasons (overly wordy, couldn’t connect to the characters, lack of ‘pizzazz’), I did love the concept of spending the summer rooting through a closed up antique shop with time to uncover hidden treasures. Lucy Coleman knows how to write about the journey and always shows that despite things not always falling into place as we’d like, there’s the potential for happiness and love if we choose it. I can always count on her to write feel-good, uplifting, contemporary romances with heartwarming characters and beautiful locations. Readers of this book will be whisked away for an unforgettable summer, engaged in a little romance, friendship, family and laughter as the lovebirds struggle to find a path to each other.

I only finished this book because I hate not completing if I start. A very weak chick lit that is all frill and no real substance. The characters are flat and some are so lightly drawn that you can’t’see’ them at all. Two stars because the food descriptions are good…

This is the first time I don’t finish a book… I read about 80% (and I had to force myself) but at some point I got so bored that I stopped. The story is very slow, boring, nothing much happens.

De la primele pagini, povestea te poartă direct pe coasta spectaculoasă a Italiei, unde peisajele, emoțiile și personajele se împletesc într-un mod absolut fermecător.
Autoarea, Lucy Coleman, creează o atmosferă caldă și luminoasă, plină de romantism și speranță. Personajul principal este ușor de îndrăgit, iar evoluția sa pe parcursul poveștii este autentică și inspirațională. Este o poveste despre regăsire, curaj și despre a-ți oferi o a doua șansă – teme universale, tratate cu delicatețe și sensibilitate.

A perfect, chilled out summer romance 🫶🏻
Set in a glorious Italian town, Positano, Marci arrives for the summer as part of her job. Positano is now on my bucket list purely because of this book 🌺
This has to be the most relaxed, laid back romance I’ve read, and the best part about destination romance reads is the FOOD and the SCENERY, and this book does it PERFECTLY 🫒🍋 I just want to sit on a balcony in Italy with an iced wine and bruschetta

I agree with other reviewers who have made comments like: Overly wordy, couldn’t connect to the characters, lack of pizzazz, and I confess to skimming the second half of the book. There were e few brief moments when I was reminded of her better books, this one just felt lacklustre and I really only finished it because I wanted so much to like it.

My summer read for book club. And wow. Why did I pick this. Sickly sweet, middle class, over polite rubbish. Not my cup of tea at all.
As a half Italian I love my food. But I’d say 50% of this book is describing a meal in precise detail. Felt like I was listening to Nigella bang on and on. Not me me this. Next.

Per Marci James nulla conta quanto il suo lavoro di antiquaria. Da anni non si concede una vacanza né una storia d’amore che le sconvolga la vita fino a quando una mail inaspettata di Richard, il suo padrino, che vive in Italia da ormai moltissimi anni, la costringe a fare le valigie. L’uomo, infatti, si è appena sposato e le ha chiesto di svuotare il suo negozio di antiquariato di Positano. Non appena sarà giunta nella soleggiata cittadina, Marci sarà accolta in maniera amichevole dagli abitanti della zona tra i quali spicca Nico, un giovane cameriere che le farà da personale guida turistica. Man mano che i giorni si susseguono e l’attività di Marci prosegue, alcuni segreti torneranno a galla e le certezze della giovane saranno destinate a essere messe in discussione.
“Capisco come ci si senta a trovarsi in mezzo a qualcosa che non si vuole, senza una facile via d’uscita a disposizione.”
Positano con i suoi tanti gradini e i suoi colori tipicamente estivi fa da perfetta cornice a questo romanzo ricco di sorprese.
Per Marci il lavoro è una vera e propria ragione di vita. Da sempre si occupa di antiquariato e di aste assieme alla sua famiglia, non le pesa lavorare ogni giorno, non le manca prendersi una pausa o abbandonarsi a un amore. Vive una vita che sembra essere quasi in antitesi con la sua giovane età, sempre attenta a non commettere errori, sempre “chiusa” nel suo piccolo mondo inglese.
Nico, caliente ragazzo italiano, si mostra sin da subito un giovane affabile e gentile, sempre pronto ad aiutare gli altri. Il suo è un personaggio in chiaroscuro in quanto se da una parte sembra essere il ritratto dell’allegria e del calore, dall’altro vive una situazione di profondo turbamento.
I due giovani instaureranno da subito una grande complicità fatta di risate e discorsi più seri. Insieme affronteranno la scoperta di tutto quello che il negozio di Richard rivela e insieme impareranno a comprendere cosa stanno cercando davvero.
Numerosi personaggi apparentemente secondari completano la trama. Tra questi si distingue Richard, il quale è indubbiamente il motore portante dell’azione. Lui che ha fatto dell’irrazionalità uno stile di vita, che ha sposato una donna conosciuta da pochi mesi senza informare la famiglia e che ora viaggia in giro per il mondo con lei, vorrebbe che la sua figlioccia si abbandonasse a nuove esperienze, che vivesse un amore estivo, che per una volta lasciasse andare la serietà che la contraddistingue.
Lo stile della prosa è semplice, fluido e diretto. Il testo pullula di italianità non solo attraverso alcune frasi riportate in italiano già nella versione originale ma anche attraverso alcuni comportamenti dei personaggi (il baciare sulle guance in segno di saluto; il senso di protezione delle madri; il valore della famiglia) e i riferimenti alle ricette tipiche della zona che, per dirla con le parole della protagonista, fanno venire l’acquolina in bocca.
Il lettore è pienamente coinvolto dalle vicende, divora il romanzo pagina dopo pagina, sempre più curioso di scoprire cosa accadrà.
Un romanzo piacevole. Una lettura sicuramente originale che alterna al romance un pizzico di mistero.

I felt transported to a world of antiques, and gorgeous Italian scenery as Positano was brought to life exquisitely in this new Lucy Coleman novel.
I really enjoyed the feeling of being welcomed into a big Italian family, that has so many strands to it, it can be daunting at first to keep up.
But Marci is in Positano to do a job, even if her godfather is proving hard to get hold of, not to mention her own growing friendship with Nico.
I really enjoyed seeing how this story developed, in some surprising ways, while the descriptions of Italian food were plentiful and tantalisingly tasty.
This felt like a real love letter to the town of Positano, which I've personally only visited briefly but it all seemed to match up with my memories of the town.
A rather enjoyable book that I am delighted I had the chance to read.

From the blurb I thought this book was about romance, but now I think is more about life and ones journey.
In most of the book, Marci thinks about her life and how traveling to Positano in Italy, to help her godfather, will help her to change her view of life, work and dreams.
It's a nice story, a little bit forced at the end, but a nice trip to Italy, with description of delicious food and beautiful views of the Amafi coast.

This was a lovely book to read and I read it very quickly.
It was very easy to become invested in Marci's life, past, present and future. She is stuck working in her family business and is asked to sort out her godfather's (Richard) business in Positano. When you start reading the book, you have no idea where it will take you and want to stand next to her (and latterly, her new friend, Olivia) as they dig into the boxes and Richard's history and secrets come to the forefront.
This is a book you need to read sitting on the Amalfi coast, being inspired by the Italian foods and sights as Marci herself discovers them.
Have to say, one of my favourite parts of this book was the Epilogue (from Richard's point of view) - where you find out some more why's behind what Marci finds.

The general story was cute but it had so much lead up. By the time things began to truly happen, it all happened so quickly that the storyline fell flat and inauthentic.

Succede sempre d’estate è un libro che porta i suoi lettori dalla grigia Inghilterra all’assolata Italia, più precisamente Positano.
Attraverso la narrazione in prima persona Marci spiega perché si deve recare nel negozio d’antiquariato del suo padrino Richard, che si trova in Thailandia in viaggio di nozze con la sua fresca sposa, e catalogare ogni pezzo per conto suo per valutarne il valore e possibile profitto. Per Marci è un piacere svolgere quella mansione, poiché è anche il suo reale lavoro. Lei è la vice nell’attività di famiglia di collezionismo e antiquariato e la passione che mette nel suo lavoro la gratifica al punto di non cercare l’amore. Ogni anno di reca in vacanza a Positano dal padrino ma questa è la prima volta che va in quella splendida località senza di lui. La ragazza ha un carattere dolce e quieto, quasi timido e riservato, e fin da subito riesce a sentirsi a suo agio al calore e solarità delle persone che incontra. La prima cosa che colpisce di Nico è l’amore che prova per Positano, non è una semplice guida turistica per Marci, ma racconta con passione e trasporto di quella città di mare che appare come una perla rara agli occhi suoi e di quelli accanto a lui. Il suo passato presenta delle ombre che, quando decide di parlare di sé, adombrano il suo viso e abbassano la voce. È grato alla madre e a Luca, l’uomo che l’ha cresciuto diventando a tutti gli effetti un padre, ma dimostra di non sentirsi pienamente realizzato. Per questo motivo pone molte domande a Marci e si incuriosisce all’approccio che la ragazza ha verso la vita.
L’avvicinarsi di Marci e Nico è fatto di piccoli passi e solo per questo acquista valore evitando di dare al lettore tutto e subito. Entrambi non hanno messo in preventivo l’amore e, parafrasando la cucina di Luca, cuociono a fuoco lento per portare in tavola un piatto eccellente e che accontenta anche i gusti più esigenti.
I personaggi secondari sono caratterizzati molto bene: Luca, lo chef, ti fa desiderare di recarti al suo ristorante per mangiare i suoi piatti, ha una gentilezza naturale e un accento che ispira tenerezza a Marci. Per non parlare delle altre persone italiane che esprimono perfettamente la nostra capacità di accoglienza e la nostra propensione nell’affrontare la vita. L’originalità è data al personaggio di Richard che appare poco nel libro ma si sente la sua presenza nei dialoghi delle persone che lo conoscono o che hanno collaborato con lui.
Gli oggetti d’arte sono un altro motivo affascinante e, assieme ai segreti presenti nella grotta di Richard, donano una sorta di mistero familiare piacevole nell’essere risolto.
I posti descritti sono meravigliosi, appaiono quasi magici e l’autrice riesce con poche parole a far immaginare perfettamente il panorama mozzafiato che i suoi personaggi stanno guardando. Le diverse situazioni sono rilassanti nonostante siano piene di movimento, i colori riempiono le scene, i gusti e i profumi sanno di estate e insieme donano alla lettura una piacevolezza incredibile.
Anche se il testo è tradotto, si percepisce una freschezza e un’accuratezza nella costruzione della storia e il detto Mangia bene, ridi spesso e ama molto racchiude perfettamente l’essenza di questo libro.
Attraverso la narrazione in prima persona Marci spiega perché si deve recare nel negozio d’antiquariato del suo padrino Richard, che si trova in Thailandia in viaggio di nozze con la sua fresca sposa, e catalogare ogni pezzo per conto suo per valutarne il valore e possibile profitto. Per Marci è un piacere svolgere quella mansione, poiché è anche il suo reale lavoro. Lei è la vice nell’attività di famiglia di collezionismo e antiquariato e la passione che mette nel suo lavoro la gratifica al punto di non cercare l’amore. Ogni anno di reca in vacanza a Positano dal padrino ma questa è la prima volta che va in quella splendida località senza di lui. La ragazza ha un carattere dolce e quieto, quasi timido e riservato, e fin da subito riesce a sentirsi a suo agio al calore e solarità delle persone che incontra. Finding Love in Positano is a wonderful travelogue as well as a story. There was also a bit of mystery thrown in there. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Marci is extremely close to her Godfather, Richard, as is her mom and brother. But they talk and share what is occurring in their lives more often. Marci's family owns an antique auction business and Richard has an antique business in Positano, Italy. Richard suddenly makes a major change in his life and seeks out his Godchildren to request one of them help him close up his antique shop and ship everything back to the UK. It makes more sense for Marci to go since she travels more for the auction house, and she has spent more time in Italy on behalf of the business. Richard has described the work to be done as pretty simple but, when Marci gets to Positano, Richard's business is anything but simple, and the changes he has made in his life appear to be anything but simple and Marci is quite concerned.
Marci arrives in Positano to find that Richard has made a family there of the family that owns the Italian restaurant down the hill from his shop. Oddly enough, Nico and his family, treat Marci as if she is family and she is not familiar with them at all, which also concerns Marci. The entire situation has Marci questioning her relationship with Richard, what has caused Richard to change so drastically, and even looking more in-depth at her entire family's relationship with Richard.
As Marci spends more time with Nico and his family and exploring Positano, she starts to question more about her life and why Richard really wanted her to go to Positano to handle closing out his business. Positano is amazing. I only saw a very small part of it during a visit of only a few hours. I realized from reading Finding Love in Positano and mapping different parts of it while reading, that I had missed so much which warrants a much longer visit to that part of the world. It was great experiencing Italy through Marci's and local Italian's eyes. Remembering the beaches along the Amalfi Coast and the beautiful, blue water is great. What really stood out for me is how Lucy Coleman makes Positano another character and draws out the character development so well. The relationships between the characters and the development of the friendship between Nico and Marci were well-developed and draw the reader in, for example spending time with the family as they run the restaurant. If you read Lucy Coleman for the travel and characters then you will love this newest book, Finding Love in Positano. Mi se pare greu să mai consideri fascinante descrierile privind Italia după ce ai citit câteva cărți scrise de Santa Montefiore. Autoarea surprinde ireal în cuvinte magia și frumusețea grădinilor pline de legume, a florilor cățărătoare și a mirosului lor, a fântânilor arteziene care completează perfect o curte dintr-un conac din Italia.
Așadar, ce am citit aici este interesant, dar nu poate fi egalat niciodată cu măiestria autoarei anterior menționate și cu imaginea pe care ți-o creează asupra uneia dintre cele mai fascinante țări din Europa.
A ajutat mult faptul că am citit cartea în vreme ce eram chiar în Italia: am fost martora agitației oamenilor, gălăgiei specifice locului, căldurii, ce-i drept, de nesuportat, aromelor deosebite și bogate care veneau din preparatele lor, cafelelor și înghețatelor savurate la umbra unor copaci sau a unor flori cățărătoare.
Lucy Coleman ne spune povestea lui Marci și a lui Nico. Nu îmi poate scăpa faptul că și în cealaltă carte semnată tot de autoare, “O vară în Provence”, pe care am citit-o anul trecut, personajul principal masculin se numește tot Nico. Mi-ar fi plăcut un pic de imaginație aici și o schimbare a numelui.
Marci este englezoaică, o persoană profund atașată de munca ei, care primește o ofertă de nerefuzat de la nașul său, Richard: o vară pe Coasta Amalfi; în schimb, trebuie să îl ajute pe el în organizarea tuturor lucrurilor sale (fiind colecționar de antichități, a reușit de-a lungul vieții să strângă numeroase obiecte, pe care acum vrea să le vândă la licitații.) Fără să știe în ce se bagă și cât de mare va fi volumul de muncă, Marci acceptă și așa începe călătoria ei în Positano, unde va încerca să găsească un echilibru perfect între muncă și distracție.
Nico are rădăcini englezești, dar devine italian odată ce mama lui, Celia, se căsătorește cu Luca, iar băiatul va fi adoptat de către acesta. Lucrează la restaurantul familiei, iar Luca speră că îi poate ceda lui această afacere. Singurul impediment este că încă nu s-a căsătorit, prin urmare, nu pare pregătit pentru o astfel de responsabilitate.
Nico se oferă să îi acorde lui Marci ajutorul în ceea ce privește sortarea tuturor lucrurilor din magazinul lui Richard, dar se și descurcă de minune fiind ghidul ei local. De asemenea, discuțiile lor nocturne, aparent inofensive și lipsite de importanță, devin profunde și ajung să se transforme în altceva. Mi-a plăcut să le urmăresc povestea; este o lectură ușoară, perfectă pentru vacanță.
