Stolen Fae #1

Lies of the Fae

Rate this book
Monster. Liar. Thief. Killer.
I’ve been called it all and so much worse.
And they’re not wrong.

I’ve been running my whole life. Hiding from the monsters who haunt my dreams and who will tear me apart again and again if they ever find me. I live off whatever I can steal, trapped inside a fae prison city filled with pollution, sin and poverty. Humans have captured the Fae. We belong to them now.
My scars make me a bad omen to my people, who shun and torment me at every turn.
Cyrus, the egotistical and frustratingly gorgeous leader of the fae under-city, can’t seem to decide whether he wants to kill me or claim me for his own dark and delicious desires.
And Reid, a dangerous and hypnotically beautiful human Authority Agent whose sole purpose should be to keep me in the dirt, has decided to keep me as his own personal Pet instead.
But when dark, demonic creatures start attacking, killing humans and Fae alike, alliances must be made, especially when the monsters seem to be determined to find and slaughter me.
A dormant war is awakening, and the part I must play in it is only just becoming clear.
Do I stand and fight? Or do I strike the match and watch them all burn?

Lies of the Fae is book 1 in “The Stolen Fae series”. It’s a dark, urban-fantasy romance full of magic, danger, passion, and pain.

Please Note: This is a reverse harem book and contains explicit content and darker elements, including mature language, violence, torture and non-consensual sex. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age.

Both MMCs start physically abusing the FMC early on in the book, so I knew this wasn’t looking good for me pretty fast. A side character also physically and sexually assaults her at the 10% mark, which I wasn’t prepared for. Not to mention her adopted family are all bad people and added to her abuse. Literally no one in this book shows a shred of kindness or any kind of decency to the FMC and she just takes it, despite her having strong Fae magic.

The author didn’t list out triggers at the beginning of the book, just in the Kindle summary. Her short blurb about there being violence, torture, and noncon were very general warnings. She should’ve been more descriptive and said something like, “the FMC isn’t street smart whatsoever, constantly puts herself in danger without any thought, and is physically and/or sexually abused by all male characters in this book, including the MMCs” and then maybe I wouldn’t be DNFing at 34%…..I’d have instead avoided this book altogether.

Mentions of mature content in this review.

I have written notes for review, but I will not publish them. This type of book is not my thing. It has a lot of triggering content. The fantasy part of the story was interesting, but erotica is something I can't get behind. I had a problem with rape being a part of fae lore. The trigger warning says non-consensual sex when it should say rape. I understand some people like rape fantasies, but it was a downside. It did not emotionally impact me because I knew it was coming, and I emotionally distanced myself from the story. On the other hand, the writer chose to introduce rape into the story, make her character go through different types of sexual assault, and only in the latter part of the book (around 80%) mention that no means no. In this 540-page book there is one sentence where the main character stands up for herself and finally says no to unwanted sexual behavior coming from two love interests. That had absolutely no effect compared to the rest of the book. I am desperately trying to rationalize the use of rape in the plot, but I am failing.
Also, I am not against sexual content in books, but making the plot revolve around sex is boring. Many other things bothered me, but I will refrain from discussing most of them. I found the plot predictable, and the fighting scenes become more repetitive by the end. The pacing was too fast for me. Villainizing Russians is a tacky, overused, and borderline xenophobic trope. I will not be continuing the series. I only read this because it was free on Amazon, and I was in the mood for fantasy. Good God, I should have chosen Holly Black's books.

Absolutely despise the MMCs. Pretty much disliked them from the very beginning but it just kept getting so much worse. Please tell me the next book is just Raven living her best life after she absolutely beats the shit out of them. Even better: kill them. Murder them. Please. It’s more than they deserve. I get morally grey but these guys have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I might continue the series if they turn out to be the villains at the end because they’re really not that far off.
Fucking gaslighting lying manipulative assholes. I hate them so much oh my god.

Also everyone that should be dead turns out to not be dead and it is so obvious from the beginning. The people that were supposed to be dead are never actually seen dead or killed. Then the sister that was turning into a monster stays in the hands of the enemy and then years later there is a leader of the monsters? WhO eVeR cOuLd ThAt bE?

I liked the book until the guys became part of it. The FMC just got horny and gaslit into tomorrow and everything went downhill. I absolutely love when the mmc does something horrible and the fmc RIGHTFULLY does not forgive him. But if I read one more time about the mmc just forcing sex (or spanking and kissing in this case) and basically distracting and gaslighting her into forgiving him, I will throw the book and myself into the ocean. LET YOUR FMC BE FUCKING MAD AND STOP “RESOLVING” ARGUMENTS THROUGH RELUCTANT SEX. There are more emotions besides horny oh my god.

In this book specifically she tells them not to touch her (and she full on rejects them for the rest of their lives but hey why listen to the woman at all) because they lied and gaslit and betrayed her etc. and they just ignore her while she’s saying it? The audacity and arrogance these men have is absolutely horrendous.

Please write enjoyable characters. You can hate villains but still enjoy them because they’re so good at being evil. But these men are just horrible and not enjoyable at all. I want to see their asses getting smacked SO BAD.

Rant over. Don’t read this book.

EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER is what I have labeled this.

Trigger warning for those that don’t like reading R@pe scenarios/stories than this book is not for u! I see a lot of reviews claiming that they DNF this book because of it. But if u stick it out the author really does highlight the journey, the recovery and healing that people going through after the fact. I wouldn’t say she glorifies it but I would say some of it seems alittle to much over the top for the main character and story.

The first 40% of the book was rough. It was hard to get into but once the story line finally picked up I was hooked! Ravens story is *chefs kiss*

2 men fated to 1 fae 😮‍💨

the banter was top tier! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 I have read spicer.

This is a 3 book series. I’m actually pretty excited to continue the series and find out more.

I really enjoyed this book, BUT it desperately needs trigger warnings. The book has a running theme of sex trafficking. The main character is sexually assaulted by two different men in the book and has a long history of being abused by pretty much everyone she's ever met. There is a lot of dark content. I'd also consider some of her interactions with her love interests dubious in consent despite wanting it. I could def see how some people would be uncomfortable with some of the scenes.
With that being said, it is a page-turner and 100% worth the read if you can handle the darker content.

I like a good dark romance, but this had absolutely no trigger warnings - starts out the first page with pretty descriptive child neglect/abuse and by 10% we have descriptive sexual/physical assault as well as our FMC reliving memories of hearing a family member be SAd and murdered....

It's a no for me, dawg. I'm out.

The premise sounded really interesting, but I just can't make this work. Cause if this is 10% in, who knows how much worse it will get.

Did this book have great character interactions? No

Did this book create a solid foundation for the relationships between the characters? Also no.

But am I invested? Very much so yes.

This book follows Raven, a Fae who is just trying to make it in the world she was born into. Humans reign supreme and Fae are treated as livestock, slaves, and low class citizens. The hierarchy of this book is a nice change of pace considering it is usually the opposite (Fae in power w/human slaves). Fae who keep a low profile, fall in line, obey the authority and work hard are able to make somewhat of a living within the walls of their cities... So long as their powers are not triggered. Power presenting Fae are taken from the city and never seen again. Anything else I say may spoil the story so I'll leave it there and let you read for yourselves ♡.

Now, interesting as the plot is, I would highly recommend people do not go in blind if you have triggers. There is A LOT of violence, death, non/dub consent and s*xual assault in this book. There are hardly any "kind" characters. It is a dark, fantasy slow burn romance. I'm eager to start the second book to see what becomes of the "situation" at the end of book one 😏.

And with that, I leave this gem of a quote:

‘You’ll be fine,’ El declares, nodding her approval and taking the bottle from me. ‘You've got pussy.’ ‘Excuse me?’ I ask. Both boys groan, obviously knowing what’s coming. ‘A pussy can take one hell of a pounding, girly. And it’ll be good as new in no time. Balls are weak, easily squashed and, let’s be honest, ugly. A pussy is beautiful. It’s resilient. So yeah, you got pussy.’

1 star* the premise was almost interesting enough to make up for the graphic scenes of sexual assault and human trafficking.

*this was two stars until I read that paragraph back and thought ?? Wtf.

I like dark romance as much as the next person, but there are genuinely only 2 characters in this whole novel that treat the main character like she deserves the air she breathes and unfortunately, the love interests aren't either of them.

The trigger warnings for this book are NOT thorough or explicit. I'm not someone who is typically bothered by ANY content but this book had me skipping scenes.

I was given an advance copy to read by the author, but the review is completely my own.

This is the first book in MJL's new dark fae series, and it is an amazing introduction to the world & characters! The worldbuilding, character development and non-stop action had me sprinting to the next chapter every single time.

I cannot wait until release day for everyone else to enjoy! It's an absolute treat 😍

I remember reading the reviews before reading this and expecting something different than what I read. From how dark the content is, to the flip flopping of emotions of the FMC as well as the pretty much constant mistreatment by really anybody in the FMC's life.

This is a very dark take on fae fantasy, but I think the world building that's done really serves to explain WHY the FMC acts how she does. She does do a lot of emotional flip flopping throughout, but to expect anything less after receiving the information that she does is wild to me.

What reason does she have to trust in the first place? Does a little bit of lust negate the fact that extreme life-altering events from childhood have lead to her current situations? In fact I'd say she handles herself pretty well as it pertains to life preservation in a world where she's seen as subhuman.

In addition, FMC has considerable amounts of trauma and things like that really shouldn't be easy for one to read no matter what trigger warnings you're offered. It was uncomfortable to experience FMC reflecting on past and current rapes and exploitations and it should be, the scenes showed what they needed to without cheapened fade-to-black chapters. This allows you to really feel the rage and despair a character feels in my opinion and is a valuable story telling tool in this case.

The plot i think is fantastic, feels new and fresh and I really enjoyed coming around the bend of each twist. I read this over 12 hours or so on and off and I am excited to dig into the second book. I've accidentally spoiled that one for myself and am really upset about the jaw dropping events that will occur but WE PERSERVERE.

MJ has done it again. She's delivered us another story of big personalities, traumatic experiences and intense magic. Honestly, I'm yet to read a book of M.J.'s that doesn't have me feeling every emotion possible.

This is definitely not a book for the faint hearted. I do recommend you check the trigger warnings. But if you can take the pain, then I can't recommend this book enough. This book kept me on my toes the whole way through, there seemed to be a new twist around every corner and I couldn't wait to have my theories confirmed or denied. My heart was in my stomach at so many points during this book. Raven does not have it easy. But I LOVED her, her whole not taking shit from anyone vibe, I loved it.

This book is such a ride, I can't wait to see where the story goes in book 2!

I received a copy of this book to read in advance and am leaving my review voluntarily

This book had potential to be so much better. I like dark romance but my problem is it needs to be written well to be somewhat believable. The author writing a character that’s been tortured and sexually assaulted the majority of her life to all of a sudden being ok being assaulted by the mmc’s because they are her “mates” is hard to believe. And be in any mood to bond when she was just raped not even 24hrs prior. I think there should have been some build up to those encounters and the mc gave me whiplash with slapping her and being rough one minute to being like “who did this to you?” and healing her injuries. I don’t think that trope works when the mmc is also putting their hands on her.

Where do I even begin? Overall the plot was interesting which is why I kept reading, but there were so many things that irritated me and took me out of it that it started feeling like a chore. The only reason I’m giving it a 2 and not a 1 is that I like the way it ended when she gave those two assholes what they deserved.
Edit: I have since changed this because looking back on it I realized I was being way too nice to add that star. It really didn’t deserve it for such a bare minimum thing to do.

The hypocrisy of men! That absolute audacity to treat her the way her supposed bonded mates treated her was one of the things that got to me the most. She would bear her soul to them because they practically force her to, and as soon as she asks a single difficult question, she all of a sudden doesn’t have the right or the place to know?? Like what gave you the right to know her shit if she can’t know yours? And then they want to have the freedom to do whatever they want with whoever they want because they're apparently children who can't commit, but god forbid she has the same right. All throughout the book, it was just a constant battle of these men wanting everything from her but not wanting to make any of the same sacrifices and it was driving me insane.

A major theme in this book is consent, or more accurately, the lack thereof. Apart from the numerous and constant scenes, mentions, and implications of rape, there are other representations of consent being taken away. Her mates take it upon themselves to mark her as theirs so that she may never leave them, doing so without her permission and with no intention of staying as loyal to her as they want in return. Instances like this happen repeatedly in the book.

My last issue is the age gap. I understand that in this world it is probably at least relatively normal to wait for a bonded one to mature because they live long lives. I can see past that and I was. But if you want your audience to believe that it is okay for them to do this then you can’t have multiple main characters treating her and calling her a child. After you have established that she is an adult, to turn around and have multiple characters saying “You’re an inexperienced child so you can’t do this” (paraphrasing) completely contradicts it and makes it very disturbing.

Omg why is goodreads not saving my reviews. Grrrraaaaahhhh!

Ok I’m just going to quickly rewrite a much less review than the NOT saved one.

FMC bratty, inconsistent in the writing in some of scenes. FMC does exactly what you shouldn’t do when you’re trying to sneak and stay undercover (play a part). You’re told to be quiet and pretend. And what does she do yells, ask questions and certainly doesn’t play the “I’m a collared fae.” Nothing to see here.

She’s constantly berating the the 2 MMC, accusing all males of rape even when innocent. This whole book all it was, was her saying men, all men rape blah blah blah. The FMC is just plain crazy and stupid. Book could have been a 4 but I’ll give it a 2 because of FMC and the inconsistencies.

Here is the unpublished draft of my review that some how saved (the missing one):
I keep alternating between 4 and 2 stars lol. The book is good and then bad. The FMC has a real problem with guys I think. She keeps tearing into her 2 mates, accusing them of raping her in the future. When they have NEVER once done anything like that to her or have had any indication that they are that type of guys (rape-y vibe, no). She’s just saying that as she thinks all men are rapists. Bratty

Another reason I say 2 star is because there are inconsistencies in the writing. A lot of !’s. FMC acts stupidly very often. MMC says: Hey you have to be quiet and do what I say, while we’re at this dangerous location. FMC: (yells) oh hey what this?! wait hey what’s this do?! MMC (whispers) shhh, quiet. FMC: asks a zillion questions. WTF, hellllllo it’s called shut the help up until later.

This must be said first, This is a dark book, DARK. Now if you like me you enjoy dark books, then I highly recommend you read this dark fae book.

It is a bleak existence for Raven, for a lot of fae, but Raven is so brave, she is a fighter. Yes, she does seem to fly off the handle in the space of a line, but she has issues, which is understandable, i would be rocking in a corner if i was Raven, she can have a bit black and white view of right and wrong sometimes. Which again is understandable, she sometimes gave me whiplash but when she is dealing with smoking hot fae Cyrus and equally hot human Reid, we can't blame her. A throat punch to either of them would be well deserved.

I enjoyed reading this, did not stop my shouting out, and the grief rages when Raven was hurt, assaulted, betrayed, you name it. If you love dark books, read it, all 3 are out, so diving straight into the book is great. Read it, cry, scream, plan how you will kill some characters, it help me through the pain. Smutty scenes with our 2 males are hot.

you wanna know something? i'll tell you. i really, truly, and enthusiastically HATED that book. i hated every single character. every. single. one. cyrus and reid are hypocritical, bigoted, narcissistic sexual predators. raven is literally the stupidest character i've ever read. the plot and characters contradicted themselves frequently. and basically the author just made every possible traumatic thing happen to the fmc, then completely disregarded it in terms of how it affected her psyche. she never coped. she was also just... fine. rape? fine. torture? fine. dead sister? totally fine. she'd have half a nightmare here and there, but usually only when there was someone there to get attention from as a result of said nightmare, and once she was up and at 'em? she was fine! jolly, in fact! so basically all the torture and dark stuff was just filler. just for fun. it added no value to the plot. hated. it. all of it.

I had a friend introduce me to MJ With her Last Witch series and I became absolutely obsessed. This book is no different the way I fell in love with Raven and all the other characters is insane. As with every book of MJs thay I’ve read I became very emotionally obsessed with all the characters, but still always having trust issues. So many trust issues. This book broke me, healed me, and then broke me all over again. I cannot wait for book two! Still so many questions to be answered. Go read this book rn you won’t regret it I promise.

are we surprised? m.j. lawrie alway delivers. this book combined a good mix of plot and politics with romance and spice. that is, if you enjoy spice. if not, it would probably be a little much.

this book is extremely dark and could be triggering for many. my main problem with this book is that i felt there were too many instances of sexual assault. now, i understand that this is the sad reality of the world she has created… but it happened A LOT.

these instances were not just spoken of in passing. instead, some of the assaults were in real time and came with description and detail. it filled me with such indescribable rage and disgust that i wanted to jump through the pages and kill the assaulters my damn self. i’m not even being a little bit dramatic. the suffering in this book is intense and never-ending. besides that, i enjoyed it!

Emotional, dark, traumatic, defiant - all features I LOVE to see in a series kick off!

Huge warning for abuse, so please have some sense about you. If you can’t read about numerous forms of abuse (past and present) don’t read it and blame the author. You’ve been warned, so be an adult about it.

I’m not going to lie, poor Raven. This FMC has been to hell and back on numerous occasions and in many different forms. He upbringing, her current situation is just devastating but her defiance and sheer will to cling hope is what I loved most. Her determination and self preservation was a wild ride from cover to cover. Most of all, I loved that she gave off her own personal ‘fuck it’ energy to take back some power and take control of her future and the revenge that is set to take place. I love a female who gets in touch with her dark side!!!

The plot was fast paced, the plot was believable, the emotions were raw and on edge, but the determination to hope- that is what drove the story. I flew through this read and can’t wait to see what book two has in store!

I loved this book and I would usually give 5 stars but the book is SO dark that I can’t. Like the beginning 40-50 pages made me SO uncomfortable that I almost stopped the book but I pushed through and it got significantly better. Like I’ve never been one to shy away from trigger warnings but READ the trigger warnings and if those are slightly an issue for you, then this book isn’t for you. I’ve got one question to the author, “are you okay??” Great book but also wack as fuck.
