Dark Journey is the prequel book to the Charli Cross Series by Mary Stone. I binge-read the series, back-to-back and discovered a thrilling crime series full of suspense, intrigue, and emotional depth which kept me engrossed the whole way through. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Savannah, the series follows Detective Charli Cross, who is a sharp and determined investigator haunted by the unsolved murder of her best friend.
What I really enjoyed about this series was the great balance between all the high-stakes investigations and the deeply personal journey of the FMC. Charli isn’t just chasing killers, she’s also wrestling with grief, guilt, and the shadows of her past. Each book layers intense, twist-filled cases with moments of vulnerability, making Charli feel not only quite formidable, but also incredibly relatable.
So, if you enjoy detective fiction with a strong, complex FMC and a mix of procedural grit and emotional stakes - then the Charli Cross Series is well worth diving into.

Short and fast red. I love these intro books to the main characters of the series side they are rich with detail and background. When we first met Charli as a character in Ellie’s series I was intrigued, then the first book gave more detail into a new multi faceted character and this book build her personality and reasons into even more detail. I am a fan!

After reading Book 1 of the Charli Cross series I was offered the prequel. Wow! What a great intro into the background and career choice of young Charlotte. More excited than before to see Book 2 released.

Bringing Charli Cross out in the open. Making her a main character is ingenious. Love the back story. Makes you want more to read.
