As the oldest wolf in her pack, Nan’s pretty sure her window for love has already come and gone. After years of taking in others off the streets, she’d much rather help those in need than chase down her elusive mate.
However, when she crosses paths with a younger fox, Nan realizes she might not have a choice.
Kari’s smart, timid, and one of Nan’s most difficult challenges yet. It’ll take a lot more than the promise of food and shelter to entice the fox.
And the longer Kari makes her wait, the harder Nan falls for the woman she so desperately wants to protect.
Fox on the Run is a paranormal lesbian romance and the first book in the Safe Haven series. Each book features a different couple, but reading the series in order is still highly recommended.
In this case we have an entire town of shifters, with no humans - and a pack that is unique because it doesn't just contain wolf shifters, but many other animal shifters, too. Like a bear shifter, a raven, puma's etc. It's an idealized community where everyone is accepted and welcomed to be a part of the family, and all contribute toward the pack. Lots of growing, hunting, bartering and such. The cottagecore dream!
Our MC Misa also called 'Nan' (58) because she is a motherly type to all the group, and does basically all of the cooking and brings in a lot of lost souls. One such soul is fox shifter, Kari, (33) who has been without a pack or family for many years. A tentative friendship forms between the two, and then much more.
The age gap of 25 years, I thought was a bit much. There was resistance from the character of Nan with regard to her older age and health issues, but it didn't seem to worry anyone else - infact people in her pack her all too keen on pushing them together. We hardly heard from Kari's POV, which I think was a missed opportunity to really explore the dynamic and relationship (and that character) further. I just wanted more there.
There's a lot of typical shifter talk and lore, their animals inside them more like separate entities, and I did enjoy getting to know the alpha, Jack, a woman who is also without a mate. There's another FF established couple there, as well.
Toward the end we get an addition of another new member, and plans for expansion of their community buildings, so it would seem there will be more installments to come - and I wouldn't be opposed to that. There was sometimes something a little off here and there about the dynamics between all the pack mates, that sometimes had me questioning if it was a little too incestuous, and maybe going to have a poly angle later on? But I can't be certain. I think the author was trying to showcase a firm bond between the pack members, but it came off a little too deep and over-reaching in some areas, perhaps. Maybe it's all those animalistic instincts.
I'd recommend the read on KU, it's not perfect, but it's certainly unique, and I'd be interested to hear how others liked it.
2,5 stars Not bad, not groundbreaking either. I'd call it a perfectly average shifter-romance. But I'm not tempted to continue this series in the slightest. So I won't.
I give one extra star because Kari the fox is too adorable!
I love the idea of the whole shape-shifters family living together and having its community; it’s definitely refreshing. But as much as I love shifter's romance, I couldn’t feel the chemistry between Nan and Kari. I wish there were Kari’s POV for the reader because it feels like a one-sided love in the first half of the book.
Kari the fox shifter was found living in an abandoned barn by the wolf shifter Nan. Nan and the Alpha who is Jack is Nan's friend, the two ladies like to bring in shifters who are in need of help and nurse them back to health. Some stay and others continue on their way. Kari has trust issues from being left behind by her parents and Nan is an old lady (her words) tries to calm those fears. Why does Nan feel like she left/lost someone behind? Will Kari come out of the barn? Questions! Enjoy!
It’s never too late for love. Nan has been taking care of her pack for years and never frown the “one” for her wolf. Then she meets Kari, a beautiful red fox, who has been along for nine years. A time of love is in the air.
