Captive Writings #2

Obsessive Messages

Rate this book
Natalie,

You’re a job. A few messages, a nighttime visit, and you’ll fly right out the cage door and into his arms. He’ll save you and condemn himself in the process. You believe I’m the bad guy, but you’re actually leading me straight to the villain of this story.

Little Bird, I was never supposed to touch. I was never supposed to want you how I do. I’ve tempted you into more, but it’s you who’s dragged me down. How can I use and discard you when I’m becoming so obsessed with you?

We’re not even at the best part of the game yet, but when we make it to the finish line, you’ll learn the truth and you will hate me.

Unfortunately for you, I’ve decided I’m not done with you.

Obsessively yours,
Tristan

Tristan is on the prowl and undercover to capture a kingpin trafficker. Unfortunately for Natalie, she comes under Tristan surveillance (stalking) as the sister to her newly found, cunning and criminal brother. This is a story of a nighttime steamy visitor / daytime bodyguard in a quest to take down a traffic ring, who stumbled upon irresistible desire and possession.

If you like your hero morally grey and transfixed by his lady, this is your story. Tristian is captivated by his Little Bird, so much so in his quest for retribution, he inserts himself in her life openly and...covertly. More to Natalie's role than he realized, Tristan is torn and Natalie is compelled by seemingly two different men. Their night games were steamy; and their daytime gazes, interactions, and pull, magnetic and enticing.

Pace was moderately progressive; characters, alluring; the storyline was wrapped in intrigue with very light dark themes. I wouldn't qualify this book as dark, and not definitely not darker than book 1. The tumultuous couple from book 1 -- my favorite - and side character friends contributed to overall interest of the story.

At some point, the storyline faltered as the couple so obviously enamored with each early on, didn't really have conflicts or angst, no dark themes to unsettle you. The writing become somewhat overly descriptive as to lose its initial pace. And with the couple's sub plot resolved, the story became a suspense thriller whose plot I could predict, an unfolding of a collective effort to apprehend the bad guy.

Still, I would recommend this story for its hot stalking and duality, characters, and accessible plot. Overall a good read.

I think we could all see this going the way it did, but I love how we got there. Natalie is so shy but determined to the world, but she acknowledges her darker desires and fully submits to them. We don’t see that a lot in some female mc’s, so it was definitely refreshing to see someone who wasn’t being pushed and pulled in her own emotions.

I can’t get over Alex. How much I hate him, how sinister and manipulative he is…I can’t get over it. I wonder if there will be any chapters or a book in his point of view, because I’d be really interested in hearing his inner thoughts, especially about the plans for Natalie and WHY. I need more!!

I absolutely cannot wait to hear the story of Brent and Teagan! The little we saw of her was heartbreaking, so I can only hope she’s not the bad guy that Brent seems to think she is.

If you’ve ever known the sheer panic of reading then looking to see how much you have left in the book, only to realize there isn’t NEARLY enough time left for all of the things that need to happen….then you’ll understand my struggle. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I absolutely love how the story is drawn out throughout the series. I HATE that I’m having to wait though! Ryker and Elena’s story in Ruthless Letters drug me in, but Tristan and Natalie’s story in Obsessive Messages kept me in. There’s a lot of sequels that lose me, so this did not disappoint.

“You’re spreading your legs for the villain. How does that make you feel?”

Automatic five stars if I’m being honest, I already know this series is going to be AMAZINGLY MORE suspenseful and harsher, even says it on the Author’s notes. This is book two in the Captive Writing series, it can be read as a standalone HOWEVER the plot follows throughout the series so it is left at a cliffhanger.

“I’ll make her mine, I’ll use her and then well. We’ll see”

This is a stalker romance with dark elements and oh gosh, Tristian and his Little Bird is something else, and BRENT. I’m calling it now that he’s my absolute favorite, I JUST KNOW IT

Tristan however, is exactly like Ryker (Ruthless Letter’s) and Natalie is very innocent and not naive but just enough that she made me want to slap her with my kindle. HAVE A BACK BONE HOE, jk but really. Tristian was way too manipulating for my liking but the pacing was absolutely perfect and I got past the character’s motives and dislikes. Tristian’s obsession over Natalie was SWOONY, we continue to get foreshadowing with Alex and his so called girlfriend Teagan. Oh and HAWKE?! 😍👀

TW/CW: stalking, dub consent, non-con, orgasm denial, manipulation, mentions of sex trafficking , mentions of murder, abuse, and violence

This is not my heroine. But some people might like it.
excerpt from the book:
“I…” I suck in a breath, readying to release the entire truth. “You’ve noticed from watching me, I’m sure, I’m not exactly a people-person. I don’t go out. I don’t have friends. I stay home and study or watch movies. When I need sex, I have my vibrator. When I want something more, I swallow up my discomfort and use an app to find a guy. But the guys I choose, I guess they see me and only see the plump introvert. They go gentle and soft. When I ask for faster, harder, or simply different—different positions, different anything really, they never do it. So, your question about them satisfying me. No, and this is why. But in the midst of that, I never got very skilled.

Following on from book one, Ryker, Tristan, Brent and Hawke are trying to take down Alex.
Now Tristan has an 'in' with Natalie, Elena's Uni friend.
He was never meant to touch her, want her, but he became obsessed.

THIS BOOK?!
I can't get over how amazing this suspenseful romance series is.
I've been impatiently waiting for this one to be released 😂

The ongoing plot is getting revealed bit by bit with each story and I'm hooked!

I love Tristan, he's very possessive and swoony 🥵🥰 exactly how I like my morally grey men

It's Brent's story next and I think its looking like he is going to be my favourite

Obsessive Messages is a grey stalker romance with some trigger warnings to be aware of including dubious consent, manipulation and mentions murder and rape

This series must be read in order to understand the ongoing plot

Obsessive Messages is book two in the Captive Writings series and is Tristan and Natalie's book. These books do need to be read in order. Tristan and Natalie's book is slighty not unhinged than Elena and Ryker's. I do recommend checking the TWs before reading. I can't wait to see what is in store for this series next.

When you have no one, you’re unnoticed, and have struggled for everything, you live your life small. You keep your head down, you work hard. And then someone comes into your life, a sibling who starts to make things easier for you, so you don’t look too closely…until you’re farther and farther into his web.

Evil comes in many forms, and Alex seems to play the protective brother. But he’s worse than he was in high school. The truth is coming in the form of a secret stalker, and Natalie’s world is about to implode. I loved this next installment of this series!!

This book gave me everything I didn't know I needed!

Book one was amazing, but Obsessive Messages really did it for me. Natalie is a shy girl who sees herself as dull and is content to live her life as a homebody, that is, until Tristan comes into her life and changes everything. Their chemistry from day one is unmatched. Though their relationship is built on a very crazy dynamic, the pair make it work through their shared obsession with one another. The addition of the characters similarly dark past creates a bond that is so strong and understanding, it made my heart both hurt and swell for them.

I also really liked being able to see the previous books characters, Elena and Ryker, and witness how their own relationship has progressed.

I'm so excited to see what new mysteries book three will uncover between Brent and Teagan. What dark secrets is she hiding, and just how far does Alex's power over her go?

This is the second book in the Captive Writings Series from M.L. Philpitt. You have to read Ruthless Letters first or you are going to be lost. This book leans a little on the dark side with a stalker and it might contain triggers for some readers. You need to heed the warnings in the beginning of the book.
It was good to be back in the world of Natalie and Tristan. It is a different kind of story but I really love that about his series. I don't think I have ever read anything like it and I am loving ever second of it. I also thought the first book was a little darker than this one but that doesn't mean it isn't as good because it is. I also don't think I have read a book in a while where both the characters were super interesting and you just had to now everything you could about both of them in every way possible. We also get to see Natalie grow a lot in this book and Tristian is beginning to like himself in ways that he never has and don't even get me started on how great the chemistry is between the two of them. I loved every second of this book and can't wait to have the next one in my hands. I didn't really want to talk about the story. I didn't even read the blurb for this book I just jumped in blind and I think that is the best way to go!! I hope you give this series a chance if you haven't yet and if you have you are going to love this second book.

"You’re beautiful, Natalie Miller. Watching you sleep will soon become my favourite activity."

Well damn I just thought I loved Ryker and his crazy ass well It's a good thing I have room for more , because hot damn Tristan is the cats meow he is sex on a stick and devious enough that when he sets his sights on you those panties melt right off phew 🥵

Poor Natalie she's picked up a stalker who likes to leave her notes along with visiting her at night. She tells her brother about the notes, but fails to mention about his nightly visits, um what is this girl playing at😏 I think she secretly likes those visits. Her brother happens to be friends with the police, so Tristan has been assigned as her bodyguard. I had to laugh at this, because yeh the universe and this arthur just worked him into her life like that haha.

How will she feel once she knows her stalkers identity? Were those feelings real or was she being used? You'll just have to read it and find out. I literally couldn't put it down when I started.

Definitely a must read. I can't wait for the next in the series. To me each book I've read so far seems to me as if they are getting more intense.

This story about Natalie and Tristan is quite unusual, and I loved that aspect. Both lead characters are super interesting, even though Natalie sees herself as a dull introvert. It’s great seeing how much she grows in this story plus how much Tristan accepts himself, too. Together they have incredible chemistry, as is evident by the amount of intimacy in the book. Getting to know a tiny bit more about the other characters was good, except for Alex, grr the evil character always makes my blood boil and the way he is portrayed is excellent—steam almost comes out of my ears thinking about him.

I absolutely loved the start of this book and honestly, I enjoyed the story throughout but felt a bit frustrated that the tension in the story was built to a great crescendo and then left. I get that the next book will keep it going but I was a tad disappointed that after Natalie had made a deal with Alex concerning her graduation, I expected something to happen but that might be on me. I know the next story is going to be interesting, the questions of where Teagan has been and what she’s involved in are burning through my mind. Bring on book three, Vicious Texts.

4 1/2 Star Read: Natalie's life is just as she likes it living alone in an apartment while studying at Uni. Her new apartment is supplied by her newly found brother Alex whom she didn't know existed until recently. Plus he has helped her out by putting her Aunt in a better home. One night Natalie finds she has a stalker leaving her notes and she doesn't know how he's getting in. Alex gets her a cop assigned to protect her who just happens to be Tristan. Now not only is Natalie falling for her stalker but also her new bodyguard. She is puzzled as to how this is so is she so lonely any man will do. Tristan is very possessive and protective of Natalie and calls her his "little bird." I'm intrigued with how Alex and Teagan are together and what is going on with these two characters. Hopefully, we will find out further into the series.
I received an arc for my honest review for NNBB. This is Book Two in the series and although technically it could be read as a stand-alone you really do need to read book one for the back story and how everyone ties in together. If you love a hot romance with mystery and intrigue you will love this story. One is left turning the pages to see what happens next and what else is going on with the characters.

After the previous book I really wanted to love this book, especially with the plot thread that continues throughout the books.
I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, but for me personally I felt the amount of steam throughout interrupted the plot that I was dying to get more of. I just felt that because of this, unlike the last book there were certain things left up in the air that I would expected to be part of this story.
Don't get me wrong I can kind of see how the author might deal with some of them in the next book especially, but for me, the female main character has already had her life turned upside down more than once so deserved to be a bigger part of the continuing battle.
In saying all of this I'm still interested to get those elusive answers in future books and I know many who will enjoy the heat level being so high.
Not every book is going to be for every reader and that's ok.

4 Stars for this stalker romance!

Once again, I was torn while reading this book ... but I couldn't stop reading. Tristan is supposedly one of the good guys, but at times I found he was straddling the fence between good and bad. I found Natalie a little wishy washy as to what she actually wanted. This is a dark story that may have triggers for some people.

Tristan is assigned to keep an eye on Natalie to see exactly what her involvement is with her new found brother, Alex. But when Natalie catches Tristan in her room one night, he can't help but become obsessed with his Little Bird. Natalie knows that she should be afraid the man who is constantly watching her, but she finds she craves the excitement it has brought into her boring life.

I am really enjoying this series!!! Thank you to the author for approving me for an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review. One of my favorite things about suspenseful romance series, is a good plot!!! And this author has done an amazing job of that with the captive writings series. We had Ryker and Elena in the first book, and the second one focused on Natalie and Tristan. And guys, Tristan is HOT. If you like possessive men, he is the man for you. It is a bit of an instant lust, which i actually didn’t mind at all. I thought how the author progressed their relationship was sneaky and fun to read. I enjoyed her bringing the other characters into the storyline and setting up the next book perfectly. The spicy scenes in this book are amazing. She does an amazing job with them and has you waiting for the next one haha!!! Overall, i cannot wait for the next book and to see what happens next in their mission!

Obsessive Messages is the 2nd book in the Captive Writing series and is Natalie and Tristan's story. This is a suspenseful, dark stalker romance and I was hooked until the end.
The overarching plot continues from the first book and we get some additional insights and backstory into some characters.
I liked Natalie and Tristan. They were both likable characters. He was possessive and swoony and she was shy and a bit naïve, yet they had great chemistry, and some really hott steamy scenes.
However for me the story felt a bit rushed and like something was missing. I was expected more in the end and was left a bit disappointed. Inspite of that, the story was well written and engrossing and I cant wait for the next book so as to get more answers to the outstanding questions. Sensitive readers should note there are some triggers in this novel so please read the warning. This was a good continuation to the series and I would recommend it to lovers of dark stalker romance.

Book 2 in The Captive Writings Series and book 1 (Ruthless Letters) must be read first!

This is Tristan & Melody's story, Tristan is Rykers friend from book 1.

In book 1, Ryker spent four years in prison because he almost killed a guy they went to school with, Alex, and throughout the book we find out why.
Ryker, Tristan, Brent and Hawke are determined to save any further women....

So, come book 2 and the 4 fellas plus Elena is trying to being Alex down. In steps Natalie - Alex's newly found sister and Tristan's 'in' to finding out more about him. She's a quiet, very self-conscious loner with no confidence whatsoever.
What originally starts with Tristan using her, quickly turns into Tristan's obsession but when secrets are revealed, can she forgive him?...

I enjoyed it, I wouldn't call it a dark read as such, there's some grey around it but nothing to serious. Definitely recommend it and I'm excited for the next two books 🤗

When I heard that this book wasn't gonna be about Ryker and Elena I was disappointed. But this book was so good.

What started off as an assignment turned out into so much more.

We see Tristan who gets obsessed with his assignment (Nathalie).

Nathalie is being used as a pawn by her brother.

While playing a dangerous game, they both end up needing each other.

Can't wait for book 3, I need to know where the gang is going to end up.

Great sequel. Hot and steamy with memorable characters.

A bit rushed at times, especially in the end and announcing who the stalker was-despite it being obvious, I wish we got more of that added to the story.

Looking forward to the third book.

I have really been enjoying this series. Seeing how each relationship develops individually while slotting a new puzzle piece into the master plot. I would put this in the “grey” category as I actually found book one to be a bit darker overall, but still solidly cementing my love for stalker romances.

In this story we have Tristan and Natalie. Tristan’s semi-innocent plan to obtain necessary information with our somewhat naive FMC at the center is quickly derailed. He was never supposed to get too close. He was to remain a shadow. But like Icarus, his curiosity crosses a little too close to the sun, and the fall into obsession is hard. But what if our seemingly innocent FMC enjoys the call of adrenaline? And what happens when the game ends and the lights come up?

After reading I liked having more insight into Tristan’s past and why we are so hell bent on this mission, but I also felt deeply for Natalie. It’s not necessarily a large theme but this is a character who has dealt with a LOT of emotional trauma and obstacles, and when it finally looks like the winds of change will blow some good fortune her way, the proverbial carpet is ripped out from underneath her to reveal only lies, manipulation and greed. She may not outwardly display her strength, but underneath that shell of innocence and naivety lies a strong foundation.

I get the feeling the next 2 books will be much darker given where we leave off and I am very anxious to see exactly how we execute the endgame. Plus I’m going to need me some more Hawke like yesterday. <3

I liked this book way better than the first one because damn Tristan was so obsessed with Natalie. Tristan kind of obsessed was the kind I like, not like Ryker's obsession to Elena.
Natalie was also kinda sick in the head because she willingly involved with her stalker and then at some point "two timing" him with Tristan. But at least she didn't as sick as Elena. Elena was in the other level of sick in the head.
The story continued from book one to this book two very smoothly. The suspense was suspensing. I cried twice because of Tristan's past events.
Even though the mystery is still unsolved, yet I kinda worry about book three because it's about Brent and Teagan. I still hate Brent because what he did in book one and thinking about reading the whole book about him is really do something to my stomach. I really hope the author delivers the story in the third book as good as the first and the second books.
How Teagan described in this book also makes me so nervous about the next book. Finger crossed 🤞 I mean I could endure everything that happened between Ryker and Elena, I guess I could also bare myself to read Brent and Teagan one.

“People like me don’t play in the daylight.” 🖤

Tristan is stalking Natalie hoping to learn more about her connection with her brother, who she recently became aware about. Natalie is still unsure how she feels about her newly found family…something is off about Alex and she can’t put her finger on it. Plus, she knows someone is stalking her and she doesn’t know whether she should be scared or excited….😬

This book was okay. I really enjoyed book 1, but this one just didn’t live up to my expectations 🫤. The spice was good and I really enjoyed it. Tristan and Natalie really have chemistry. I loved the plus size representation, but was looking for Natalie to be a little stronger & more confident than she was. I wanted more plot too. It just wasn’t there.

WOW! This was one deliciously sexy story filled with suspense, drama, danger, intense emotions and a whole lot of passion. It had me gripping my kindle tightly with anticipation, surprised at some of the twists and turns the story takes and just hoping for an eventual happy ending!

Tristian and Natalie’s crazy whirlwind of a relationship was fraught with emotions and drama. But they have such fantastic chemistry and great back and forth banter that they had me laughing at times and fanning myself to cool down from the intensity of what was building between them. I just loved them together and I was cheering for them from the sidelines.

This was a captivating and highly entertaining story from start to finish and I can’t wait for the next book to see what is going to happen with Alex next.

This is the continuation of book 1, Ryke, Tristan, Brent and Hawke are trying to take down Alex and now it's time for Tristan to do his part. Tristan starts leaving mysterious letters for Natalie, and once Natalie's new found brother who just so happens to be Alex find out he calls the chief at the police station to have an body guard assigned. The chief just so happens to pick Tristan and now he finally has his in. He was only supposed to find a way to get closer to Alex and use Natalie to get there, then feelings get twisted in the middle and he finds his perfect match.

I had a little bit of a hard time relating to these two compared to Ryker and Elena, I felt like I needed more back story of the two to really have a better connection to them, but I still enjoyed the book. I love all the twist and turns and how the story is unfolding and we are getting the entire plot bit by bit.
