His to devour. His to claim. His to keep?

I only went out to the supermarket. Then I was abducted. By aliens. Freaking aliens! What the hell? So now I’m on another planet, at the mercy of one massive alien predator…
And what an alien he is! Big muscles everywhere, handsome, winged and with a burning desire to eat me.

Whole.

Jyr is the leader of a fearsome alien species known as the Gryn. Dark and dangerous, winged and clawed, these predators need females, and he believes he already owns me.

I’m not that sort of girl. For a start I don’t belong to him, or anyone. I’m not staying on this planet to produce babies for an alien male who stalks my every move.

Who looks at me like I’m his perfect prey.
Who makes me feel warm inside. Better than I've felt in a very long time.

But none of that matters. I don't belong here. I've got to get back to Earth, by any means possible.

Just one problem…

This alien predator isn’t going to let me go…

Bad Angels!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 😤😠🙃
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Viv - she is taken from outside her home and wakes up with a tube down her throat in a pool of goo, naked on the floor. She pulls the tube out of her throat and sees a bunch of large bags full of liquid with tubes going into them and a woman inside each of them. All of the sudden, the rear of the room opens and she is falling from a spaceship onto a planet when something flying with claws grabs her out of the air.

The Hero: Jyr - he is the prime of the Gryn legion, the only Gryn legion left on Ustacas after the reckoning (a war between organics and machines). A legion of a hundred vicious and daunting males. They are formidable predators with wings and claws. They lost most of their females in the reckoning and need more for the species to survive.

The Story: Viv is brought to the ground after being caught, she is still naked and now covered in mud. When she looks up, expecting to see a large bird, she sees humanoid men with wings. Her inner voice calls them ‘bad angels’. The men go and get their leader, a 7 foot tall ‘bad angel’, handsome and fearsome.

Viv was burned badly in the past and has burn scars on her skin, she considers herself disfigured. I don’t know why some authors like to put disfiguring scars on their Heroes or heroines. Do they think making them less than perfect makes them more relatable? I am not sure but I don’t like it, I am also not a fan of women who are fat or “curvy”. I am curvy and I don’t want to read about curvy or scarred heroines. I like to imagine a thin and pretty heroine. I get enough of women like myself when I look in the mirror.

The story is told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Dan Calley and Carmen Rose. Both of these narrators speak with an accent. I can’t tell what accent, possibly European or South African. Either way, they both have good voices and are competent narrators, though neither are among my favorite narrators, they both are a bit monotone and don’t portray much emotion through their voices.

The world building was fairly good, though I found the story to be no more than average for the alien romance genre and the characters a bit flat. I am not sure if it was the accents, the writing or my mood, but I just didn’t get invested in the characters like I usually do. Also the book tries to be super steamy, especially because the alien male has two sexual appendages, but it just comes off a bit corny.

Why the hell does this book have such a good rating? This is mindless crap. I’m usually pretty forgiving, but nope, I can’t read this. The guy is an asshole and if she’s attracted to that then she’s not much better.

He finds her on the floor of a jail cell, naked, covered in mud, and he senses that she’s his mate. Does he ask her name? No. Does he ask how she got there? No. Does he ask if she’s okay?! Nope. Does he grab her up instantly, take her to his place, and immediately hit her with, “I’m gonna fill you with so much cum until you have all my babies”? Yes. And when she rebukes him, he leaves her there alone, naked, covered in mud, and she’s no species he’s ever seen. What. The. Fuck? And then a few hours later she’s in bed with him, simply cause he’s hot and he accepts her scars. Oh so romantic. 🙄 Not! And STILL he’s barely shown any concern or empathy for her abduction, and when she says she wants to find the other humans that she saw captive on the ship, he says he doesn’t care about them since she is his mate and not them. Wow, nice guy. 😠

I kept reading, thinking he would eventually show some empathy or some redeeming qualities in order for her to fall for him, but then they started make out and she let him go down on her. Ugh. She was abducted, dropped from a crashing ship, locked in a cell, tossed in a cave, told that she will bear his young, and repeatedly he walked away and left her alone when she said no… and now she’s making out with him?! Girl, have some self respect! He’s an asshole! At least let him go through some redemption arc before you spread your legs!!

Sadly, not even the promise of dual cocks has me wanting to keep reading this one.

Sweet story

A decent alien fantasy story. The aliens are like giant birds of pray. Nice twist on the big bad being evil robots. They are up to something and it would be good to find out what. The dynamic in the lair is interesting and I would like to explore the other characters more. I guess that is how the sequels will play out.

Unfortunately I stopped at 50%
I felt no connection with the couple. Many unexplained things in the story, just a super excited alpha male, wanting to put his seed inside the female.

I have already started the next series so this “first” series is out of place for me. But nevermind that, Jyr and Viv are super great. She is thirty-six. Quite refreshing not to have a twenty-four year old again. She’s damaged. Physically and therefore emotionally. But he makes it all better.

“Abduction changed nothing for me, but he has changed everything. He did not judge. He only loved.”

We know right away that there are four other women. But that’s for further books to figure out. Or is it? Surprisingly not. Which means we get an adventure.

As I have already been introduced to this world through the second series, I’m familiar with the oddball word choices that occasionally pop up with this author. For example…

“My car span around and around until it came to a stop on the roadside.” — spun

“If Viv can be my fated mate, what it there to say that other Gryn might also find their mates with human females?” — is there

“Well, this one needs something fixing too.” — some

The sex was great. A lot of it. I wish she’d found another way to say “eat me out” which was overused. About four times. No need to brag, girl.

Overall I really liked this story. Especially that it picked up at the end and introduced the next few pairings without veering away from the main couple’s time. Will continue on!

Alphahole meets woman with scars who pushes back

Jyr was annoying AF at the beginning of this book. Fortunately he improved after exposure to Viv, the fierce FMC who helps him grow. I would have liked more info about Viv, especially about who she was prior to getting her scars.
They had some good banter and set up the storyline for the next book, which I’m more interested in.

Spice: 4/5

Kidnapped from Earth by Aliens. Evil aliens taking people from a place they shouldn't. Taking them for their own gain. Then taken again. These women find themselves in a nightmare of alien creatures who treat them badly. Being rescued by clawed, winged, fanged alien Angels. Can they be trusted?

These alpha scary beautiful warriors are looking for a better way of life, a life free of slavery, tyranny, and dictators fighting a war they hope to one day win. It is amongst this hostile enemy that encounter the fated eregri. A place where woman have not been for a very long time.

Love this series.

Would give this a 3.5/5 stars. Thought the book was very interesting and I was pretty hooked once I was able to understand the setting. I do think there were a few plot points that kind of dragged a bit which is why I don’t think I’d give this 4 stars. But if you want a fantasy alien romance then I would recommend this for you. Who wouldn’t want a bad ass angel creature?

Meh

Some parts of it was very long and I skipped it. Not sure that I liked the female main character, Vivian.

There are better alien novels out there. Will not continue this series.

Viv wakes in the most frightening manner and where she thought she was just about to step into her apartment and she might have had a sudden blackout it appears that she was in fact abducted. She finds a few other women but is unable to save them or even get them to be aware of her presence before the ship she is in breaks apart and she is sent hurtling into the skies but what catches her is the stuff of nightmares. Jyr is the head of his group of legion of males. He is called to look as a discovery by one of his younger members and the second that he sees it, or rather her is pretty much loses his mind. Viv is his eregri, his fated one to be except she is not as accepting of the role as he is. She is frightened and distrustful of him which given the circumstances is understandable. She believes herself to be broken, unloveable and she is not about to give it up to an alien. He would do anything for her but will she ever see it? She just wants to save the other humans and get back to Earth, or does she?
There are some great one liners in this and I have to say that I sat smirking rather a lot while reading this. There is some good action and I love the undercurrents of discontent. A fantastic world has been created and I cannot wait to come back to find out more.

Good

When Viv wakes up in an alien spacecraft, she doesn’t know what has happened. Kidnapped by aliens, she finds herself amongst the Gryn, a winged species native to the planet she now occupies.
The Gryn were taken over by their sentient technology, and live a dystopian lifestyle, forever trying to keep out of the clutches of their enemy.
They are led by their Prime, Jyr, a powerful winged male who recognizes Viv as his fated mate.
Between internal strife, their ongoing battles with the enemy, more humans that need rescuing, and cultural divides, Viv and Jyr have a lot to work out!

This was an enjoyable sci-fi romance, with a slight dystopian feel due to the post apocalyptic world that is the setting.
It’s a good read, some sex scenes, and lots of dystopian sci-fi settings that fans of the genre will enjoy.
The characters are well built, the Prime and his seniors interesting characters that we will hopefully see more of!

All in all, a thoroughly entertaining sci-fi romance, in an interesting setting that sci-fi romance fans will enjoy reading.

I rounded up a 2.5 for this one.

I love a good sci-fi alien romance, they are a good way to shut off my brain for a few hours, that being said, this book was ok.
I started winged aliens with two dicks and that was as unique as it gets.
It had nests and a fully male tribe and all the sci-fi elements, which I enjoyed don't get me wrong but the really cool thing about this one was the dynamic that the FMC had with the crew.

If there is something I will remember about this book for a while it's the warm feeling I got from how the mercs interacted with her, it gave me a lot for Wendy from the Peter Pan vibes like she was treated as this motherly figure and she had an active role in the inner workings of their base thing
But yeah that is what I take away from this book the rest of the plot is muddied in my memory something about fighting robots and whatnot

DNF at 59%. I really tried to read this whole book, but the main characters were so immature and unlikable, and the story was so boringly written, that I didn't bothered in reading till the end. In fact, they both could have died and I wouldn't have cared.

The world building was interesting, though. The idea of a dystopian world were the machines have taken the control of everything it's really cool, and it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the execution it wasn't the best.

Everyone in this book is somehow both miserable whiners and assholes. I genuinely hated all of the characters.
And this is a spoiler but the rape / anal rape scene was completely unnecessary and distasteful for the story. It felt like it was added only for shock value.

The premise of the bad guys on this one reminded me of the Butlerian Jihad of the Dune saga books, where technology was eschewed because of the rise of the machines. This is an apocalypse where the machines are in control of the planet, and the MC is the leader of a large band of mercenaries-for-hire. They are kind of morally grey thugs in their history but now they no longer steal from other organics, and don’t have to threaten others for work. The MC and his senior officials were changed by the machines that captured them into super soldiers and then they escaped.

There’s not a huge backstory reveal yet on the machines in this first book of the series, so I’m hoping for more details in the other books.

The mercenary group live in cliff dwellings that are not underground because they have wings. Unfortunately, the machines have drones of course. In a way it’s sort of a symbiant relationship, because the mercs make their living by being hired muscle to the towns and groups of other species that live in the desolated world.
(Hopefully we will get future books with those species- cat people, lizard people, and insectazoid people).

I liked the MMC a lot in this one. He wasn’t perfect but he worked at making himself better. He was a douche at first and the fmc didn’t just accept it. She also wasn’t so sassy to the point of being foolish.

I liked that the fmc had depth to her backstory. I work in the same industry as she did and can say that you get kind of paranoid when you work in the insurance industry for long enough. If something traumatic happens it can set off fears you never knew you could develop.

There is the ubiquitous pregnancy trope that’s in every sci fi series. But it’s not a thing til the end.

I liked that the author either has owned pet birds or did research, because it’s the FIRST time I’ve seen a book with feathered/ winged mc’s that preening is discussed. I have own birds almost all my life, and preening is extremely important for their health, and helping them preen is a bond that is satisfying. Growing feathers are very uncomfortable. Feathers are encased in waxy sheaths that must be ‘preened’ off so that the feather can unfurl. While they are in their encased states, feathers feel like porcupine quills almost. Itchy, irritating, prickly, especially around the shoulders. There’s a reason why molt season finds many birds in irritated moods.

Bonus interesting bird fact: whenever a feather is lost, another feather on the corresponding opposite side of the bird falls off eventually on its own. It’s nature’s way of keeping birds on an even-keel for flight. :) Ok sorry for the digression. Would be cool if the author puts that fact in there somewhere because it’s a really interesting fact that I would imagine would be true for the Gryn as well.

One thing I want to mention is there is a řäpê scene on-page of the mmc by a machine. The MMC seems to not let it traumatize him too much but maybe trusts because he already suffers from ptsd from his previous capture.

The book could have gotten a lot darker at that point but it didn’t. Who knows what the future books will contain about the experiments. On to the next one!

Barely surviving

Viv wakes up in an alien laboratory surrounded by other women in hanging sacks and intubated. Something jolts her from the shop where she's found by young alien scouts and taken to their lair. Kidnapped, again. Then she's plucked up by yet another alien and taken to a cave where she's told she's its mate and will bear its offspring. Nope. This has to be a bad dream.

Spoilers ahead.
Ok, so, it's not exactly the usual sci-fi, kidnapped by aliens romance. The women were kidnapped by an A.I. that took over a planet. It had already taken all of the women of one species, and they hadn't survived. And here's where it starts falling apart. There are no babies. All the young are older teens. So why hadn't raiding parties destroyed more bases looking for the women? And the males kept there? They just sort of work at protecting the ones left and scraping by in survival mode. But after more than a decade, they should be fighting back. Where are the killjoy bots made? Why aren't they destroying the source? They fear tech, but basic mechanics don't need motherboards. They could have improved their lives without advanced tech. They're a warrior species but every female was taken? With so many males, especially enhanced ones with fast healing, extra strength, and the ability to mentally talk to each other- which enhances sneakiness - how are they not winning this war? There's just a lot of things that don't add up. It was a decent read, I finished it. Although, I about did stop at the one point. Definite trigger warnings for torture and for robotic and chemical manipulation that causes Jyr to donate genetic material he had no intention of providing voluntarily. Also for the threat of r*pe by Jyr's rival. Those should probably be mentioned in the blurb for sensitive readers. The romance is pretty much insta-love and wraps up with the obligatory pregnancy. The world building is scant. We only know that they have wings, look remarkably human, fear technology, and run a protection racket. There are 2 other races, feline and reptilian, barely mentioned outside of one night stands or shop owners. There was a lot of squandered potential lost to the alien reproductive anatomy rather than plot or world building.

There are a few things I've come to know as true about Hattie Jack's world building. The environments are always interesting, she takes the time to incorporate multiple alien species in one book, the antagonist is unique and brings a good amount of resistance and that she takes the time to develop creatures unlike ones she did before.
These are all the elements I love in her books.
On the opposite side of the scale is the underwhelming relationships.
Let me clarify. It's not due to the characters themselves because they are so enjoyable to read. It's due to the fact that the actual building of this relationship is completely skipped and any inner conflict that the characters are having eventually just evaporate and now they're with that person. There is no natural process of them getting closer learning about each other or working through issues. It all seems to happen off page. Because of this I would say that characters are something you can get invested in, but I never actually feel myself getting invested in the relationship. I don't feel like Jyr had to be with his love and trust (you see, I've already forgotten her name). I feel like the human woman in these books can be anyone. They are so interchangeable that their characters never strike me as much as the male characters.
And let me tell you I have ornithophobia (fear of birds) So there were a lot of moments in this book which just like gave me the heebie-jeevies just because oh my God, they're giant bird people. But I still loved these characters. It's just the humans at this point that I'm a bit iffy of and maybe it's just this first book. But Even in the last series of Hattie jacks that I read the sarkarrni series. I can remember the male character so clearly and the humans are just the humans.

🖤 “You are my family, my savior. I want you. I want all of you.”
~~~
Vivian has been through a lot. After her accident, she’s shut herself from the world and now it’s difficult for her to trust anyone. I loved her strength to endure everything and her bravery and fierceness when facing danger and unknown situations. In addition, she was so kind and caring with the Gryn warriors. She’s so wonderful!
Jyr is an absolute Alpha. He’s strong, fiercely protective, self-assured, bossy and arrogant. But he’s also so caring and thoughtful. And I loved his determination to do everything to win and keep his mate.
The development of their relationship was amazing and scorching hot! Their chemistry was undeniable and they were truly a great match. Both had to go through a lot, but in the end they got their well-deserved HEA. And I loved the thoughtbond that they shared - it was so intimate and wonderful. And then we have the doubly endowed Jyr… so sexy!
In addition, I’m quite intrigued by Ryak and Orvos and I’m looking forward to reading more about them. As a whole, all the Gryn are fascinating and I really enjoyed reading about their interactions and personalities.
Moreover, I loved the worldbuilding, the uniqueness of the alien races and the backstory of how everything came to be as it is now.
Overall, the story is a magnificent start of the series. It’s filled with fast-paced action, danger, suspense, twists, turns, betrayal, steamy romance, heartwarming moments and wonderful characters.
I loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next!
