वर्दी वाला गुंडा वेद प्रकाश शर्मा का सफलतम थ्रिलर उपन्यास है। इस उपन्यास की आजतक लगभग 8 करोड़ प्रतियाँ बिक चुकी हैं। भारत में जनसाधारण में लोकप्रिय थ्रिलर उपन्यासों की दुनिया में यह उपन्यास क्लासिक का दर्जा रखता है। लेखक खुद इस उपन्यास के बारे में लिखते हैं कि एक शाम मैंने देखा कि उत्तर प्रदेश पुलिस का एक वर्दीधारी सिपाही नशे में धुत चौराहे पर इधर-उधर लाठियां भांज रहा है। इस सिपाही को देखकर पहली दफा मेरे मन में विचार आया कि ये तो वर्दी की गुंडागर्दी है और इसी से ‘वर्दी वाला गुंडा’ नाम मेरे ज़ेहन में आया और फिर यह उपन्यास लिख डाला।

About the author

Ved Prakash Sharma was an Indian writer of novels and screenplays in Hindi. He was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where he completed his graduation from NAS Degree College. Having begun his professional career as a ghost writer, he went on to write 176 novels (ghostwriting around 23 novels of them). Dahekte Shaher (1973) was the first novel Sharma got credit for. He primarily wrote detective novels, among them Kalyug ki Ramayan and Vardi Wala Gunda were his famous works. The main characters in his detective novels were Vijay, Vikas, Raghunath, Alphanse, Vibha Jindal, Keshav Pandit and Raina. According to his Times of India obituary his 1992 novel Vardi Wala Gunda "broke all records and sold 15 lakh copies on the very first day of its release", while the Hindu reported overall sales of "80 million copies".

Sharma also made several contributions to Bollywood, the Hindi film industry in India. His novel Bahu Maange Insaaf was adapted for film Bahu Ki Awaaz in 1985, while Anaam (1992) too was based on his work. Sharma also contributed to two installments in the Khiladi series of Akshay Kumar films—Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and International Khiladi (1999). In 2010 Zee TV aired Keshav Pandit, a series based on the character created by Sharma. He founded Tulsi Comics and also created few comic characters like Jambu.

Sharma died aged 62 on 17 February 2017 in Meerut; he had been suffering from lung cancer for almost a year.

मेरे ख्याल से त्रुटिवश "धर्मयुद्ध" का कवर पेज लगा दिया है जबकि उपन्यास का नाम "वर्दी वाला गुंडा" है। हिंदी जासूसी उपन्यासों के सरताज वेद प्रकाश शर्मा का यह सबसे चर्चित उपन्यास रहा है। पल्प फिक्शन में अगर टॉप टेन उपन्यासों का जिक्र किया जाएगा तो "वर्दी वाला गुंडा" उनमे जरूर शामिल होगा। दरअसल यही वह उपन्यास था जिसने वेद प्रकाश शर्मा का दीवाना बना दिया था लोगो को।

आपको यह तथ्य शायद चौकाने वाला लगे पर इस उपन्यास की रिलीजिंग पर पहले ही दिन 15 लाख प्रतियां बिक गयी थी और अब तक 8 करोड़ से ज्यादा प्रतियां बिक चुकी है।

जैसा कि शर्मा जी के हर उपन्यास में लगभग होता है कि आप सोच कुछ रहे होते है, होता है कुछ और ही और ,अंतिम पेज तक आप अपना कोई अंदाजा नही लगा सकते हैं। इस उपन्यास के कथानक में इतने ज्यादा मोड़ है कि बस दिमाग हिल जाता है।

लुगदी साहित्य इसके पहले कभी नहीं पढ़ा। लेकिन जहां कहीं पुलिस की बुराई सुनते थे, कभी कभी इस उपन्यास का ज़िक्र भी हो जाता था।
सोचा एक बार शुरू के कुछ पन्ने पढ़ कर देखते हैं। लेकिन ये तो ग़ज़ब की कहानी है।
रेस फिल्म का क्लाइमेक्स इससे हल्का है। हर समय लगता है कि कुछ तो गड़बड़ है, और होती भी है लेकिन वो नहीं जो हम सोचते हैं।
प्लॉट थोड़ा और अच्छा हो सकता था। राजीव गांधी जी और लिट्टे की कहानी से प्लॉट मेल खाता है।
लेकिन कहानी लेखन ग़ज़ब है। शर्मा जी की आठ करोड़ पुस्तकें बिकना आश्चर्य नहीं लगता है।
पुलिस में बहुत कुछ बदलाव तब से हुआ है। लेकिन अभी भी बहुत कुछ बाकी है।

The first ever novel I ever read. It was in hindi, and I truly enjoyed reading it. The book encouraged me to read more novels, write a novel and what pleasure it is reading a novel. I will always remember the feel of the story, and will read it again if I get hold of it someday.

Vardi Wala Gunda begins on a high note — raw, intense, and gripping. The first thirty pages set up a promising narrative filled with tension and intrigue. However, once the central character enters, the story quickly loses its edge. His exaggerated intelligence and constant one-upmanship make him incredibly annoying. It feels as if he’s the only character in the entire book with a brain, while everyone else exists just to make him look smarter.

The plot, clearly inspired by the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, had the potential for depth and political relevance. But instead of exploring that in a meaningful way, the book veers into unrealistic, almost cartoonish territory. What starts as a bold thriller turns into a frustrating and implausible ride.

For the readers who are looking for subtlety, depth, or believable characters, this one misses the mark.
