What a day it is. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping. Actually, its rather grey and drizzly here where I am, but I have a new Blacksad book to read, so its sunny and birds are singing on the inside, I assure you.
If you aren't familiar with this amazing series, and my humble little review gets you to go out and try it, then you're most welcome. This is one of the absolute treasures of the comic world. A book so craftily written and exquisitely drawn as to make many other luminaries of the industry look positively pedestrian by comparison. Don't believe me, go out and get a copy and see for yourself. Of course, if you do that, be sure to start at the beginning with Blacksad: The Collected Stories, but when you are done inhaling the back catalogue like the most glorious breath of air you've ever experienced, be sure to read They All Fall Down as well. For whilst it may not be the pinnacle of Blacksad stories, it is still very, very good. A bit of a slow burn. More of a simmer than straight to the boil. But if we get there with volume two, as it looks as though we might, the steady start may pay off in spades.
Blacksad is almost certainly the best looking comic available anywhere. A bold claim to be sure, but look at these panels and you'll see what I mean. The sheer amount of detail, of fluidity, of nuance, of emotion that Juanjo Guarnido is able to pack into his panels is almost inhuman. Each one is a work of art in its own right. God help me if we ever got an animated series with a similar style and level of detail as this. I'd probably need to take a few spare pairs of underpants with me on first viewing. I'll repeat myself again, this is the most beautiful comic book on the market. It would be all too unfair if we didn't have a great story to go along with all that eye candy. But the world can occasionally be a worthwhile place to be, as long as there is Blacksad in it. Read this book, and read every other Blacksad book you can as quickly as you can. You won't regret it for a second. 4.25/5
