Run: Gemma Falls never expected to use her game theory expertise to outrun a killer. But for years, that skill is all that kept her one step ahead of a deadly stalker. When Gemma gets the chance to teach at D.C. University, she hopes she and her young daughter have found a safe harbor. The only flaw is the arrogant philosophy professor who’s always underfoot giving unwanted advice—in his sexy British accent . . .
Hide: Jethro Hanson has blood on his hands. He’s working within ivy-covered university halls now, but he knows that his work with the Deep Ops team and the deadly acts he once committed for the sake of Queen and country place him beyond forgiveness—until he meets Gemma . . .
Seek: Soon, the passion between them stuns them both. But when Jethro discovers a threat is fast overtaking her, he must choose between the redemption he seeks—and releasing the ever-present killer inside . . .
New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti has published more than seventy novels and novellas, which have been translated into several languages, with millions of copies sold world-wide. Her books have received Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus starred reviews, favorable Washington Post and New York Times Book Reviews, and been included in Amazon best books of the year.
Rebecca has ridden in a locked Chevy trunk, has asked the unfortunate delivery guy to release her from a set of handcuffs, and has discovered the best silver mine shafts in which to bury a body…all in the name of research. Honest.
I know I took a little break from this series longer than I wanted... but I'm back and ready to jump into the last 2 books with enthusiasm.
I am truly enjoying the romantic suspense in the Deep Ops Series …… There is a new couple in each story. . But that doesn’t mean that there is no back story going on in each Installment…..The characters and their situations can be rather bit over the top at times, and yeah some might say that the stories might not be quite realistic or believable.
But for me the characters have just found their way into my heart… Each and every one of them has a unique character about them…… And the damn humor is a bit ridiculous at times, but none of that bothers me….. I’ve been having the time of my life with this Band of misfits
A week before her wedding Gemma Falls went on the run from her abusive ex-boyfriend Monty…she found out she was pregnant with their child. She could not risk her child enduring the things that she had endured with Monty
Never settling too long in one place due to the fact that Monty had sent several private investigators to find her…… well until now
Just imagine he did not know that she had a daughter by him and he was hunting her like a mad man….. Monty would never stop coming if he ever found out
Jethro Hanson (former MI6 agent, and now he works as professor in a College nearby…..
Mind you that Jethro has recently helped out Angus and his team of deep ops with taking down a serial killer (Lassiter. ) . Jethro enjoys helping out the ragtag team when needed. But honestly, He preferred a peaceful life after all that he had endured being a former MI6 agent
But his past has come back to bite him, see his older brother was a contract killer. One of the best, actually, and he also was a serial killer as well
I was a little disappointed in this installment that we didn’t get very much of Roscoe’s antics…… We have got two new characters in this installment, Ian and Oliver, MI6 agents from Jethro’s past…. Oh, and it was so hilarious watching all these train killers obliged to tiny Lil Trudy
Unforgiven by Rebecca Zanetti Book 5 of the Deep Ops series. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better in series order as each progressive book will have previous characters and relationships develop throughout. Gemma is hiding from an abusive ex. She knows better than to trust coworker Professor Jethro but he continues to be helpful after a flat tire and smashed car window.
Gripping and intense. A bit of dry humor and a couple of steamy romantic encounters after slow burn start. Friendships and made family that continues to grow. Favorites Roscoe and Wolfe make the story rich and fulfilling.
Excerpt: “Jethro partially turned to take the hit of several toddlers ramming him head on with happy cries of his name. He fell over and then rolled around, gently wrestling and letting the kids use him as a jungle gym.” — this was Jethro, not Roscoe the dog.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I’ve also purchased all formats of the book to keep and enjoy again in the future.
God I love Rebecca Zanetti. Her writing just speaks to me...... and it says "buy all my books because they are awesome" lol. I haven't read a book of Rebecca's yet that I didn't love. She is a auto buy for me. I first fell in love with Rebecca's writing when I read her Dark Protector series( which is one of my all time favorites), if you haven't read that series and love Paranormal romance check it out it's sooooo Good. Every series after DP that I have read were great. I love them all but, Deep ops holds a special place in my heart. I just fell in love with this ragtag group of badasses. Wolfe has always been my favorite, but Jethro is a close second.
Jethro is everything you could want in a man. Sexy, alpha, badass, British, smart, caring, and loyal. I loved getting to know him, and his background more. Gemma was amazing too. I love how brave she was. She was smart, a fighter, and protective of her daughter. Trudy was adorable. my ovaries exploded every time one of the big, strong, badass warrior let Trudy wrap them around her tiny finger. I love that Jethro and Gemma took their time got to know each other and built trust before they went deep with each other. They made a sexy couple and a sweet little family.
Wolfe! Omg Wolfe was cracking me up all through the book, and with him being Jethro's best friend he was in the book a lot. I can't wait to see Wolfe become a daddy. Sexy British twins Oliver and Ian were new to the series and can I just say they fit right in. I really hope Rebecca writes stories for them too. It was fun getting to visit with all the past couples and of course Roscoe. Sexy Lawyer Scott was in this book and I felt some sparks between him and a little Deep Ops Blond. This book was action packed, funny, sweet and sexy I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Gemma Falls left her abusive ex-boyfriend when she found out she was pregnant with their child. She has been on the run for the last couple of years, staying just steps ahead of him and his private detectives. Gemma has changed her name and recently taken a job at a D.C. University where she has met Professor Jethro Hanson. Jethro tries to talk to her, but Gemma is keeping her distance. The last things she needs is another man in her life.
Jethro is interested in Gemma and would like to get to know her better; but he is suddenly being pulled in another direction. A body was recently found in an alley with a note addressed to him. Jethro, a former MI6 spy, knows who the killer is. He knows that there will be many more bodies unless he can stop the killer. He also knows that Gemma could be in danger just by talking to him.
This is the fifth book in Rebecca Zanetti's Deep Ops series. I would recommend reading this series in order. The are many reoccurring characters in this series, so I would start at the beginning.
I enjoyed this romantic suspense story. Gemma's young daughter Trudy along with my favorite alcoholic German Shephard Roscoe, provide the entertainment in this story. And not only do we have Gemma who is being stalked by her ex; but we also have a serial killer who has a vendetta against Jethro. We learn early in the book who the killer is, but that doesn't hurt the story. We never knew when he would show up or who he would try to kill. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
I loved the entire Deep Ops series! ⭐️ Rebecca Zanetti delivers an amazing group of flawed characters that seem to all be misfits yet they bond together as a tight family.
This time, Jethro, who is a professor at the college, has his own book and I couldn't wait to dive in! Jethro has a secret M16 background that he is desperately trying to move on from and the world of violence. At the college he meets a new hire, Gemma, a single mother with a lot to hide. They form a bond of friendship and soon trust with each other. Danger follows them and both their pasts threaten to catch up with them. There is a ton of action and a bit of romance as Gemma and Jethro try to stay ahead of her abusive ex and his violent brother. All of the gang, plus Roscoe the lovable, alcoholic, high heel wearing German Shepard is back and Kat the adorable kitten. New friends of Jethro's are also introduced in this book so I hope that there will be more books to come! A perfect blend of action and light romance from Rebecca Zanetti!
Thank you Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC!
Gemma Falls is a single mother who’s been on the run from her child’s abusive father for years–ever since she found out she was pregnant and made her escape. She manages to orchestrate a temporary job for herself as a professor at a university outside of DC, but her new life is far from easy. She doesn’t have much money, and a fellow professor, a handsome Brit, is paying her far too much attention. It turns out that he has secrets of his own–ones that put the both of them in grave danger. This book was not at all what I was expecting! While Gemma’s backstory is one of the plots of the book, the main premise surrounds Professor Jethro Hanson, a former MI6 operative who now works as a professor. A serial killer who he hunted in his previous life has crossed the pond to target him–and whoever he cares about. Unfortunately for Gemma and her daughter, that now includes them. This book has a lot of twists and turns in the plot. A few of the twists literally had me gasping in surprise. Like I said, this book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, genre-wise. Unforgiven features quite a bit of the investigation background of trying to catch the serial killer. Jethro and his former colleagues are investigating the recent killings, looking into Gemma’s past, etc. and the genre turns into a bit of an investigative thriller. I was a little confused at times, since there are several different teams and investigative units involved in the plotline–some which work well together, and some which don’t. This is the fifth book in the series, and I suspect that I might have better understood the dynamics of the different teams and characters had I read the other books first. That said, in this book, we’re introduced to couples from the previous books, along with a hint of what their romantic thriller storylines were. It’s cleverly done–we’re given enough of a taste to be intrigued to check out those books, but not so much that their stories are spoiled. The romance between Gemma and Jethro takes a backseat to the action and adventure of the storyline. That said, their relationship is sweet, and I loved the misunderstandings–particularly when they first meet, and they both have assumptions about one another. Trudy, Gemma’s four-year-old daughter, is absolutely adorable, and the budding father-daughter relationship between Trudy and Jethro is cheek-pinchingly cute. Ultimately, Unforgiven is a fast-paced, thrilling romantic suspense novel with lots of intrigue, adventure, a hint of angst, and a sweet romance. *Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for the ebook to review* This review appeared first on https://powerlibrarian.wordpress.com/ Book Blog | Instagram | TikTok | Website | Twitter My 2022 Reading Challenge
Rebecca Zanetti NEVER disappoints. I love the Deep Ops series and so happy to jump back in. I’m a sucker for a badass protector but a British badass protector?! Swoon 😮💨
I have read this series and loved it. There is just something about a gang of misfits who band together for a common mission that just tugs at me. I fully expected to absolutely love this book which featured my favorite 007 Professor Jethro Hanson, a swoon worthy supporting character in the other books. But I didn't. I just couldn't get in the groove with this one.
Dr. Jethro Hanson is a real renaissance man. Educated, British, handsome and off the charts smart. He is a professor at DC University, but moonlights on Angus Force's Deep Ops Team. He had his fill of killing for Crown and Country and left MI6, but that is an organization you can never really leave. He loves teaching but is jolted back to his past when his psycho brother escapes and shows up in the good old USA murdering people and leaving evidence that Jethro is the killer. Jethro is determined to handle this little problem on his own, but the Deep Ops family isn't about to let him face this alone.
Gemma Falls has been on the run from an abusive relationship for over three years. The teaching position at DC University is her chance for some stability, at least for a while. Hiding in plain sight only works if you don't draw attention to yourself, but Gemma has drawn the attention of a gorgeous professor and as much as she wants to explore that, she is ready to run again. She wants to run, but the sexy Brit has her wrapped up in his arms and the security he and his friends can provide. Unfortunately, she and her daughter are caught up in the deadly cat and mouse game Jethro and his brother are playing out.
My thanks to Lyrical, Publisher, and Rebecca Zanetti, author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It has murder, intrigue, action, a likable female protagonist, a hot, caring hero, a cute toddler, an adorable dog, sizzling chemistry, a heart-warming romance, and a happily ever after ending. The closing sentences at the end of the book are beautiful! It is the fifth entry in Ms. Zanetti's outstanding Deep Ops series, and can be enjoyed as a stand alone, but is even better when read in order.
Gemma is a woman on the run. Jethro is also running from his past, trying to atone for past mistakes.
The first time they meet she’s wary. He’s not impressed with the ice queen who reminds him too much of his mother. But the more they meet the more she realises maybe he’s different. And he sees her not the persona she’s created.
I really enjoyed this one. My favourite characters were Trudy and Wolfe. I absolutely loved Jethro’s best friend. So much I might have to go back and read his book.
While this can easily be read as a standalone I did wish I’d read the previous ones.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Unforgiven is book 5 of the Deep Ops series by Rebecca Zanetti. It’s a standalone romantic suspense. Dual POV with a happy ending.
Tropes: ➵British professor with a secret past ➵tortured hero ➵insta-lovey ➵slow burn ➵on the run single mother
For almost four years Gemma has been on the run protecting her young daughter and herself from her abusive ex-fiancé. Hoping to save enough money to keep running, she’s arranged to teach at D.C. University for the next few months. She just never expected a handsome British philosophy professor and his dangerous s could derail her plans so thoroughly.
Former MI6 agent Jethro Hanson has been trying to find redemption. But when his past comes back to haunt and threaten Gemma, all bets are off, because he’ll stop at nothing to protect her and her daughter.
I feel like I keep saying the same thing with each of the Deep Ops books “I’ve been waiting to read this to that character’s book from the moment I met them.” But it’s the honest truth. I’ve been wanting to know more about the mysterious professor with the sexy accent ever since he appeared in the series.
This story is fast paced and exciting, full of thrilling moments (imagine movie scene explosions), humor and touching moments (envision the cutest kid with a loving dog and a great set of friends who back you up like family) and of course, sexy romance.
I will also not tire of mentioning how much I adore Wolfe and Roscoe, those two just steal the show every time they’re in a scene. I really liked the new additions to the team as can’t wait to read the next instalment in the series.

I have enjoyed each one of Ms. Zanetti's books in the Deep Ops series. Each one of these Alpha males have met their match and found a deep and abiding friendship/family within the Deep Ops team. Ms. Zanetti's well-crafted and fast paced plot kept me turning the pages.
I confess that I've been intrigued by Jet/Jethro Hanson and his murky past but this story blew me away with his history. Gemma was one of the most courageous heroines that Ms. Zanetti has written in this series. Gemma was smart, devious and so devoted to her daughter that I teared up at every scene with Trudy. As usual Roscoe brought the humor to the scenes, bless his alcoholic heart. It was so good to see all of the team members together again and find out where each of the couples are now in their lives. Suspense, action, friendship, uniquely flawed characters, romance, one of the cutest little girls that I've ever read and an alcoholic German Shepherd that will make you laugh. An amazing romantic suspense that kept me up way too late to finish.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
These books are so damn good!!! Also, serious AUDIO info below.
Jethro Hanson(super sexy, former MI6 agent, professor, stuck with crappy name) originally helped Angus take down the serial killer, Lassiter. He's worked with the Deep Ops team off and on, but now he is done. He refuses to become a full-time member of the team and just wants to live a peaceful life away from danger, teaching college. Gemma(professor, single mom) has been on the run from her abusive ex for years. When her friend Serena(Deep Ops member) leaves town, she lets Gemma and her daughter crash at her place, and Gemma also takes over the teaching job Serena abandoned.
Gemma and Jethro have an attraction to each other, but before it can turn into anything more, Jethro gets news that his insane brother has escaped prison and is now on US soil and after him. Gemma doesn't have time for a relationship anyway, she has her daughter and their safety to think of. Well, ya know life wouldn't be complete if people around Jethro didn't start dying. Plus, Gemma's past catches up to her and Jethro swears to keep her safe. But how can he keep her safe while also trying to take out his brother??
Much like the story with Angus, Jet ends up needing an attorney, so Scott Terentson(sexy lawyer) is brought back in, as well as officers, Tate and Buckle. Dickheads, Tom Rutherford and Agent Fields are back, acting like absolute twats. I would think that after they were proven sooooooo wrong in the Lassiter case that they would be a little more humble. Nope - not a chance. Rutherford immediately thinks Jethro is guilty of EVERYTHING.
KID: RZ added a kid to this story and you know I hate kids. They're annoying little cock blockers!!!
SEX: Since there's a stupid kid in this book, you know that there's not going to be much sex. It's a very slow burn.
AUDIO: It's no secret that I love Roger Wayne. The range of his voices is stellar. PLUS.... you think his regular voice is sexy??? Just wait until you hear him with a British accent. Holy Jesus on a Popsicle Stick!!!!! You might as well not even bother wearing panties at this point.
Overall, I love these books and I'm about to start the entire series over again because they're JUST. THAT. GOOD. Can you tell I'm a superfan?? Well I am.
SIDE NOTES: We also get new players, Ian and Oliver, MI6 agents and friends with Jethro. They provide excellent comedy. We do not get a lot of Rosco, which is disappointing. What we do get is a lot more of Wolfe, and you know I love him. I think he's a perfect man!!! Sexy, sweet, tender, unintentionally hilarious, and also a killer!!!
"Wolfe? Why do you have a cat on your shoulder?" "Because he won't fit in my pocket."
This one is a great book, but for once, I had a complaint.
*I received a free copy of Unforgiven. This has in no way influenced my voluntary review which is honest and unbiased.*
Zanetti definitely knows how to write a very tight, creepy psychological thriller that still manages to include extremely hot romance! Jethro and Gemma were both fantastic characters to get to know, and it was also so good to be back with Angus Force and the team. The fact that Gemma had a little girl just made the suspense aspects even stronger.
Story 4.25 Stars Narration 4.5 stars This is the fifth book in this series about a ragtag group of FBI agents that have gotten into trouble or have done things outside the law at times. They are in the basement of a government building with little in the way of comfort. Many personalities and now some romantic liaisons have morphed them into a family of sorts. They are extremely good at their jobs no matter how often they almost lose their funding and jobs.
This time it’s Jethro’s turn. He isn’t exactly a member but consults for them at times. He’s British, was a member of the deepest ops team for queen and country, but is now a professor in America. He meets Jemma when she starts teaching at the same university. She and her little girl are on the run and you realize it very quickly. He just knows something’s up with her. To make matters even worse is that his brother is pretty much a serial killer and he’s trying to ruin Jethro. This makes for a great deal of action, dead bodies and false arrests. Romance too. The characters are all engaging especially Jemma’s little girl. It was fun seeing all the alpha male’s fall under her spell. It was especially good to see Jethro take on a daddy role when he thought he’d never have a family. The German shepherd is back with his alcoholic ways although they manage to keep him away from his fetish for chewing up high heels-probably because he’s bonding with the little girl as well or because it mostly takes place in a huge snow storm and everyone wears boots.
This was a fairly quick listen and I think it might be one of my favorites of the series. If not my favorite. The little girl and her relationships with all the team members may have swayed me that way although I enjoyed Jethro and Gemma as well. Recommended to adult romantic suspense readers.
Jethro's story was so much more than I could have asked for. I adored his relationship with Gemma's daughter, Trudy. Really all the characters and how they were with Trudy made this book so much fun to read. I just love when a small child is involved and all the adults melt for that child. Jethro and Gemma were amazing and I enjoyed every bit of their journey. Ian and Oliver were a very pleasant surprise and I do hope they get their own book. Wolfe and Roscoe still entertain me to no end. I really just enjoyed this book from start to finish.
This is the fifth standalone in one of my favorite romantic suspense series. I love the motley crew in this unit and cannot get enough of them. If you love the genre or are curious, this is the series to try. It has swoons, humor, friendship, HEAs and plenty of suspense.
Jethro Hanson, has worked for Queen and country and now works as a college professor and has aided our Deep Ops team. When one of his colleagues takes a sabbatical on short notice, he worries, but her replacement has him worried more. Something is off with Gemma Falls and mishaps keep happening to her. As he befriends her, he thinks this mischief is caused by his past….but quickly learns it’s hers.
This was another delightful, intense and swoon-worthy tale. From Gemma’s background to MI6, I was all in. We get to see our alcohol loving pup and the rest of the gang. It was great seeing them coordinate and work together. The updates, banter, and food talk all added to the tale.
The story touches on domestic abuse, stalking and more. As always, the author has done her research and delivers an air of believability to her story.
Zanetti has created something special with the Deep Ops Series and I am always ready for more. Fans of humor, teams, romance, and plenty of suspense will love this unit FBI unit.
Unforgiven is the last of the Deep Ops, I am not sure if the author is planning on any more books in the series. But I have a feeling this is the last of the series, but I could be wrong. But I have to say that I absolutely adored this book. It was so fun to see Jethro finally get his book. He has been a character that has intrigued me throughout the whole of the series so I honestly just couldn't get enough of seeing him get his story and how it was delivered by Rebecca Zanetti. This one will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat, and I really loved the heroine that he ends up with, who is on the run herself as she has an abusive ex and trying to protect their daughter from him.
We do get some flashbacks in this one, but honestly, they didn't bother me. Sometimes flashblacks can bother me, but Rebecca Zanetti really fleshed them out so well in this one that it felt so natural to the story itself and it didn't overwhelm the present plot so it worked for me. She is one of the few authors that can write these effectively. Unforgiven though is a story that digs deep into Jethro's past and some unresolved issues with his brother and his past as a MI-6 agent. So it kinda had a bit of a James Bond feel to the story especially as I did this in audiobook. I do think for these audiobooks, to not be distracted by other things. The narration is well done, but due to the plot building, you will miss things, if you are are doing things that distract you from the story. The romance itself was endearing. Jethro definitely makes sure to fight for his lady and doesn't let her run away from what they have, no matter who their enemy is. Really adored his commitment to her and her daughter. And the little girl, man she had my heart and she had ALL the men wrapped around her little finger.
Overall I found Unforgiven to be a super gem of a read that only Zanetti can deliver! If you are a fan of romantic suspense or Zanetti, then I highly recommend this book and this series.
PS2 : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* This review is based on an NetGalley ARC provided in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion. *
Ohhhhh I was SO excited to read this book and when I saw it was on Netgalley I couldn't resist asking for it (and now I regret reading it so fast xD)
What I particularly liked : - the universe of course ! For me, it's a new chapter in the series because the "first" characters all had their own book (which I all reread by the way after this one xD) and so now we have new characters that make their appearance but also an expanding universe which I really liked ! Here we were less focused on the HDD and more on the university and the MI6 but I really appreciated this preview =) I can't wait to see how it will be in the future, especially the new relationship with the HDD =D - the writing which is always so pleasant : fluid with as much humor as passion but also very realistic descriptions and well-crafted plots ! - the plots that fascinated me from beginning to end ! Both the story with "Fletcher" (I must admit I loved learning more about Jet and his past ! And that scene with Gemma in the cafe at 24% !! I was crazy ><) as the story with Gemma's ex-boyfriend (that psychopath !!) - the main characters that I loved <3 Jethro, whom we already knew a little about from the previous books, who had intrigued me a lot and whom I loved to see again in more detail here (a James Bond side but also with tenderness and humor (in fact it made me think more of the James Bond of the last movie for those who saw it =))) and Gemma of course that we discover here (a very human heroine with whom we easily identified and that I really enjoyed following !) - the secondary characters who have a very special place in this book, the new ones (ohhh how I liked the twins =D) and the old ones (Wolfe who remains my favorite but I must admit certain secondary characters like Scott, Millie or Tate made me want to know more about them =D) - the romance that was PERFECT : not too fast or too slow with humor and passion and sex scenes ... <3
In short, another favorite for this romance that I devoured in no time ! If you are a fan of suspense romance or just romance with passion and humor, I recommend the WHOLE series =D
PS1 : I don't know if I would like the next book to be with Millie (I would see her very well with Scott the lawyer but also ex-Marine =D) or Serena or with one of Jethro's two friends or with Tate and his partner =D
PS2 : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D
This was chilling! Rebecca Zanetti writes hot and steamy romantic suspense, but Unforgiven is suspense first and foremost, with the love and the romance sharpening the risks and danger.
Gemma Falls is a single mother on the run from an abuser. She finds a temporary position teaching statistics and game theory at DC University. Her new colleague, Dr. Jethro Hanson, is a British professor who appears disinterestedly helpful but is hiding so much more than Gemma could guess. Still waters run deep indeed.
Gemma is being stalked by her ex, while Jethro is receiving notes from a serial killer. Sure, he may argue the semantics of the term, but essentially there are killings and they occur serially. The stakes are critical for Gemma because of her daughter. Stakes are phenomenal for Jethro because, well, victims are getting disemboweled. Like I said: it’s chilling.
Luckily, Jethro has friends for tough spaces, having helped Angus Forge and the Deep Ops team on a previous mission. And, Jethro’s skills and know-how come from his MI6 background, which comes with benefits as well. Jethro and Gemma find the perfect chemistry together, and learn that with a found family around them, they no longer have to fight their own battles alone. I found this to be one of the most engaging and thrilling of Rebecca’s Deep Ops instalments. I’m giving it 4.5 stars because of it’s awesomeness in making my blood run both hot and cold, withholding a half star because the ultimate villain(s), while scary, were rather predictable.
I am grateful to the publisher for this ARC distributed via NetGalley.
I haven't read many of the author's stories in the past, but this one was just amazing.
Give me suspenseful stories filled with a huge romance plot and I’m done for the night! I just can't get enough of it.
And Zanetti has such a gift to keep you invested and craving more and more of these stories each time.
Jethro is not your typical hero. He's dangerous and when he's found with blood on his hands, you can make your own assumptions. Throughout the book, he proves himself to be an honest man, one that will never ask for help from his friends or colleagues because he actually has a bigger heart and doesn't want to get them killed or in trouble. Protection for the ones he cares is a must in his game.
Gemma is a single mother, but that doesn't mean she can't redo her life and while she's still keeping her distance, their chemistry and attraction are undeniable from the moment they get to know each other better.
Unforgiven is one of the best romantic suspense story that I’ve ever read. I couldn't stop turning the pages faster and faster to get my adrenaline shot from this story.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy.
Unforgiven is the 5th book in the Deep Ops series. I was excited to get my hands on this one because I have been loving this series so far. This one was a wonderful addition to the series. Jethro has shonw up throughout, so was happy yo get his story finally.
I really enjoyed the msytery. There are a couple of dangers in this one. One is much more disturbing than the other. Gemma is on the run and Jethro is on the hunt for a serial killer. One to whom he has a personal connection. I was definitely holding my breath toward the end. I loved Gemma as a character. Her drive to keep her and her daughter safe was admirable. That one scene in the lawyer's office was intense. I was so cheering her on!
What I love most about this series is how each couple ends up realizing they have become a part of a bigger family in the team. I loved checking in on the team. I think Wolf will always be my favorite. I hope this series continues and really soon. I highly recommend this one as well as the series!
Unforgiven is book 5 in the Deep Ops series and I loved it from beginning to end. Jethro and Gemma had a great connection and amazing chemistry. Jethro helped Angus's team and is now basically an honorary member and considered part of the family. Gemma is a single mom running from her abusive ex, she's a great mom and her little girl Trudy was just the sweetest. Someone from Jethro's past is back and looking to ruin him and will use Gemma to accomplish it. This series just keeps getting better with each book. The family the team has created is wonderful and I loved the community they're planning for themselves and the woman they love. I loved the newest men, Scott and the twins Oliver and Ian. I really hope each one will get their own book soon.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own***
My soft spot for Rebecca Zanetti's 'Deep Ops' stems from a misfit crew under Angus Force that don't really bother to hide their brokenness (but in fact, almost revel in it) and slowly becoming a dysfunctional family as the series progresses. The individual books' focus on each pairing however, do vary in quality and romantic tropes underpinned by suspense.
In 'Unforgiven', the entire team gets thrown into chaos by the whirlwind that's Gemma Falls and her daughter--a mother-daughter pair on the run from an abusive ex. The sudden insertion of Jethro's super-evil, over-the-top smart villain of a brother who threatens to wreck the fragile peace the crew has been enjoying also conflates the danger that Gemma faces. With the twin threats, Zanetti's storytelling is pacey as the crew fight fire on both fronts, with Jethro neatly bulldozing himself into Gemma's life and bed.
It was nice to see the return of the crew as a whole and the dynamics that they create when they are around each other; the addition of some side characters does helps keep the plot more lighthearted than darkly violent. Zanetti's brand of humour that she lends the secondary cast can be somewhat off-key, though it certainly does well enough to serve as a tension-reliever at times.
I'm a little less enthused strangely, about the Deep Ops' crew's individual stories and it's no different here--the violent past of each of Angus's team member is often touted to be the reason and excuse why they don't take any emotional plunges, then switch their opinions almost immediately when 'the one' appears. It's a holding pattern that repeats like clockwork and frankly, I'd like to see a bit more nuance with this particular tortured and overused trope.
Jethro's insistence on railroading his way into Gemma's problems (going so far as to order a background check on her when it wasn't his place to) simply because she was reticent with him didn't put him in the best light, more so as he'd also just come off a one-night stand when he'd met her. That he also flipped so quickly from steadfastly refusing any commitment to any woman to suddenly wanting to play family because of his need to protect Gemma and her daughter felt more of a product of the constant adrenaline rush from a sudden roll of traumatising events than one forged out of deep emotional connection and understanding.
Zanetti's blend of suspense and action is probably what will keep me coming back still; maybe the next pairing is the one that will really unearth that pot of gold for me...who knows?
Before I get onto the review of this one, I have a complaint. I hated how the narrator said Gemma's name, I'm used to hearing that name said like it starts with a J, instead he pronounced the G, like g in gum. It made a really pretty name sound stupid, rant over now.
I did really like Gemma and her adorable daughter Trudy. I hated that Gemma was on the run from an abusive ex, she was doing the best she could to be safe. This last stop ended up being just what she needed, although it didn't seem like it at first. The instant animosity between Gemma and Jethro had me laughing. Of course she wanted to keep her distance, but Jethro wouldn't let her as he sussed out more was going on there. Quickly Gemma's past came out as the whole team ended up helping her and Jethro as the ran into trouble.
I loved that Gemma got to see this, people building a family by choice, jumping to help because they wanted to. Better was how everyone was charmed by Trudy and she was treated like the most important person ever.
While the hunt for the bad guy was going on, things got sticky when Jethro was at the heart of things and his past started spilling out and all over everyone. Jethro learned quickly too, how great it was to have this pack of people at his back.
While all this is happening, Gemma and Jethro started to build something real and lasting, they just needed to outlast the bad guy. Of course they did, which left things ending on a high note for everyone.
I don’t think Zanetti’s writing really works for me, which is unfortunate as she writes the types of books I tend to like. Also, Zanetti apparently teaches at a community college but she seems to have comical misunderstandings about how academia works at elite universities. Our FMC doesn’t have a PhD, so that’s already a stretch, even as an adjunct. At one point, the MMC just gives her one of his classes to teach after the school year had already started, which seems really unlikely in the absences of an emergency (I had a professor who’s son died in the middle of the semester and she only took leave temporarily) and it’s something that would definitely need departmental approval regardless.
This is really a great series and I am so glad I found it and this author. I see the potential for several more excellent books with other very intriguing characters here. I sure hope so!
