According to a popular legend, the famous God of War of Great Liang, Huo Wujiu, was once captured by an enemy country. He had his meridians severed and both his legs broken before he was thrown into the prison. In order to humiliate him, that incapable ruler of the country gifted him to his cutsleeve brother as a concubine.
General Huo suffered a great deal of humiliation. He laid in wait for three years before he shed his cicada skin and returned to the Great Jing. He treated his crippled legs, and three months later, he led his army to storm the enemy’s capital. He slaughtered the emperor, razed the capital, and finally beheaded that tr*sh of a cutsleeve, displaying his head on the city’s walls for the next three years.
Since then, the world has been united.
——
A certain university’s history lecturer received a graduation thesis depicting the legend of Huo Wujiu, and he wrote a full page of criticism for the student.
Then he blinked, and he was transmigrated into the body of that cutsleeve prince.
There were lanterns and decorations everywhere. A man came, sending word that the disabled general of the enemy state had already entered the manor in his wedding sedan.
As he looked at the General Huo in front of him, taking in his malicious gaze, his tortured state, clad in a red wedding gown, Jiang Suizhou realised that even legends can come true.
This legend could even cause him to be beheaded in public in the future, with his head hung on the city walls for three years.
Jiang Suizhou’s only option was to take good care of General Huo.
In spite of the hidden arrows of the court’s political agendas and the incapable ruler’s endless attempts to humiliate him, he could only bite the bullet and bear the brunt of it; his only wish was that after three years, he could protect his own head.
Of course, he didn’t dare to even dream of asking this 3 meters tall “concubine” to serve him.
However, before the three years was up, General Huo’s legs recovered on their own.
He didn’t just slaughter the incapable ruler and unite the land under the heavens, but he also climbed into his own bed and pinned him down with a heated gaze, stubbornly wanting to establish his status as a concubine.
A lot of transmigration stories have been written, and this one, though entertaining, is less impressive than some others. That said, it earns points for credibility by making the transmigrator a historian, deeply familiar with the customs and political landscape of the country.
The first part is fun, as we follow Jiang Suizhou navigating his place in the new world and scheming to change his fate by keeping the enemy general happy. Add to that his struggles in the political arena, where both the emperor and Pang Shao serve as formidable adversaries, and the story maintains a solid level of tension. Unfortunately, once the main couple gets together, their dynamic devolves into a tired cliché of “weak and shy” versus “rawr rawr, I will protecc,” which makes them far less compelling.
The side characters are also underutilized. Two significant ones vanish midway through the story, only to reappear in the final extra, almost as if the author suddenly remembered their existence. There are some noticeable plot holes as well, though it’s hard to say if these are the author’s doing or the result of translation issues—especially since there were instances of names being mistyped.
Personally, I think the story should have ended after the big climax, which occurs about two-thirds of the book. Instead, it drags on with a half-hearted attempt to tie up loose ends. The final antagonist is laughably weak, and the resolution even more so, leaving the ending feeling lackluster.
I actually expected more from this novel, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to it. Maybe because I MTLed the whole novel, it affected my experience a lot. The political side of the plot is nothing meticulous, the antagonists are just brainless cannon fodders. I kept going because of the romance, but even that part is kind of lacking for me. I still enjoyed it while reading it, but I do think that this is quite unforgettable for me. That actually makes me sad because I really thought I would loved this when I first read the synopsis. Maybe I'll blame some of it to the fact that I read the MTL and it influenced my whole reading experience.
The characterizations was great Like they really sold it for me like usually it was just two dimensional like when it comes to this types of tropes but it's very rare when you found one thats really knock it out of the park in terms of storyline and characters. This is one of the rare ones. It was never boring, this one pulled me in, in the best way possible. I liked how general huo slowly letting his guards down and how his heart letting Jin Wang in like literally them falling in love was being told in the most tender way possible It was like Disney like it was pretty written like a fairy tale.
This was a fun book. I loved Jiang Suizhou, his sense of humour, and the way he approached things when he suddenly transmigrated into the past. Huo Wujiu was the silent and broading type at first but once we got to know him better I found him quite funny too (he teased Jiang Suizhou mercilessly and I loved that).
The story wasn’t complicated and the political scheming wasn’t that deep, but I actually appreciated the lighthearted read at this point in time. Admittedly, I’m a bit generous with my rating as the translators switched twice and in the end (during the extras) it read a lot like a machine translation (but those weren’t that interesting anyway). The main part was translated very well though and the author’s sense of humour came across really well.
I’m definitely looking forward to the official translation.
The story gave me similar vibes to those I got from Married Thrice to Salted Fish.
5/5***** A decent historical novel with simple and straight forward plot.Although it's quite simple and mainly focus on main leads,I cannot stop myself from reading this. This is cute, heartwarming and slow burn romance. If you are more interested in romance without much political intrigue, this novel is for you.I had a difficult time to get into this for the first 20 chapters but believe me,it is so worth it.The ending is satisfying and heart-touching for me.
Time travel✔️ Both main characters are likeable ✔️ Romance✔️ No stupid side charcaters✔️ The villains are not stupid✔️
It's nice every once in a while to read books like this. I mean, it's not too heavy but not too nonsensical in terms of plot. I may have things I want to nitpick but I can't deny that I fairly enjoyed ADGWBMC.
ADGWBMC is a cute story, I believe. We get to see Jiang Suizhou (MC) feeling his way through the ropes of the unofficial history he didn't want to believe before, which in turn helped him throughout the story. And Huo Wujiu, our concubine—empress—being a scary god of war but is secretly an easily jealous and big golden retriever, is honestly tickling my brain. I love their relationship! Especially after they confessed. Would they really be considered slowburn if I read them in just a short time? I swear, I really enjoyed their moments!
About the story, I feel like some important parts that needed to be opened weren't properly entertained in the book like Huo Wujiu's past battle before he was captured, his right hand man that was silenced, and many others. And some parts were dragged on so much even if (I believe) they're not much essential to the plot and character development. The author has a tendency to run her characters in circle just to prolong something that could've been finished early. And the extra space could've been given to much more important matters. I'm not sure if this is because of the translation or the author just liked to leave some things ambiguous. There are also characters that are introduced and then will not appear or be entirely neglected in the next chapters. A lot of cannon fodders, to be honest. Nevertheless, I liked everything. I just have some reservations.
All in all, it's a fairly good read! I also liked the other characters. Honestly, I wanted to know more about Huo Yuyan but he was really painted as someone bad and scheming without other rooms to think to. It kind of made me sad.
What I really like about Jiang Suizhou is that he tried to impart open-minded ideas to his people that he obviously got from the present, like Lou Wanjun leading in army. His respect for women—example in that argument he had with Qi Min—is truly admirable. He is a really great character, in and out.
Before I stop, I want to say that the "Modern" extras really made my day. It made me really happy! Oh, what a feeling for your love to not change after all lifetimes in between that you weren't together. It's such a nice thought.
I finding this really forgettable. I'm finding this the characters a bit 2D and the plot boring. Maybe it's because there's no 'system' which the MC interacts with and therefore there's no humour.
FYI: It was announced in Oct 2024 by 7Seas that this has been officially licenced.
I love the book because of the well-roundedness of the characters. The story is simple but the author did a great job with the characters that it gave the story depth.
Every character in the story has a purpose and a role to fill. I can't recall a single filler character in the story.
Plus, all of the characters are adults and they act like adults who know how to use their brains (MC is a professor and ML is a General). They don't act like teenagers or immature adults so the drama and angst might be too mellow for someone who love the crazy drama.
Had high hopes for this novel since it seems pretty popular, but after finishing I'm left scratching my head as to why. It was an okay read but definitely not super memorable or exciting.
The story follows our MC, Jiang Suizhou. He's a history professor who has studied a period of Chinese history in depth. To his surprise, one day he wakes up as one of the personalities from his history book, and it's someone who dies early at the hands of the other country's general who was taken captive by his country. Determined to stay alive as long as possible, he does everything he can to get on the general's good side, starting from treating him nicely at home to helping him find a doctor for his maimed legs.
Obviously, they start out as unfamiliar enemies but gradually warm up to each other. The general, Huo Wujiu, can tell that JSZ is treating him genuinely and wants him to get better, so slowly he develops feelings for JSZ and feels super jealous of his other "concubines" XP And on JSZ's side, he slowly starts treating the general as a trusted confidant and always feels safe with the general by his side. Their relationship itself was cute enough, I suppose, but the build up took so long, and it's not super exciting when they finally get together either.
The premise of the story sounded interesting, but the actual story doesn't quite live up to the hype. It felt very slow-paced and read more like a slice of life, with very little in terms of political intrigue and pretty straightforward villains. I got bored multiple times as I was reading and kept waiting for the story to pick up, but it never did.
The most interesting part of the story came at the very end, when the MC and ML actually work together to deceive one of the bad guys, but this part of the story was quite short and not satisfying enough.
There are some extra chapters as well, mostly set in the modern times, but I skipped those as I wasn't particularly invested in our main characters.
Overall I feel like this was a very average book for me.
A solid read, maybe a bit repetitive after the typical arranged marriage shenanigans were over. Loved the MC and his ridiculous plots of basically annoying everyone out of their minds until they lose. The ML is a Drake meme: "Becoming the Emperor?" - nah! "Putting your hubby on the throne and being the angriest Empress ever to guard him from any prospective concubines?" - nice. Most of the plot is politics with some action, but it's not very convoluted: all in all it's a light read, sometimes a bit naive, but it works. The romance is soft and cute and fade-to-black.

If you liked Golden Terrace, you’ll like this series too. From the intentional injuring of a general and the lasting issues that follow to the political intrigue forcing characters to carefully maneuver and scheme, it’s full of complications yet also very much heartwarming in the way Golden Terrace was.
The reason this series is not five stars is simply because it fell to a common danmei curse, which is that when the main characters got together, their relationship became a little less engaging. However, Huo Wujiu and Jiang Suizhou were fun characters, and I really enjoyed their dynamic for the majority of it.

The heartthrob Protagonist Just Wants To Monopolize Me 3.5
I'm here 4 the gays.
I was casting around for a new danmei to read and found this fairly recently written (2021) one by Liu Gou Hua (the authors all have such cute/interesting pseudonyms). Still in the process of being MTL translated and checked/proofread on Sleepy Translations website so to date, 18 out of 123 chapters have been translated. Thanks to Xashii, Xiatian and Charm for their work on the translation.
MC Jiang Suizhou is a modern day university history professor who transmigrates back in history to the body of a queer prince gifted a concubine - the feared General Huo Wujiu of Great Liang. It's somewhat funny because Jiang Suizhou had been berating a student for writing alternate history (ye shi) about this time period ie. constructing a speculative frame of historical events through which the true account has been lost in time.
残疾战神嫁我为妾后 is both an enemies to lovers trope and also 'know the script and try to change it' like the Villian Scum Life-saving System. Jiang Suizhou knows what happened in recorded history having studied it (being beheaded by Huo Wujiu when his kingdom falls) and tries to change the fate for his prince character Jingwang.
So far I'm not hooked. It is still early where Suizhou and Wujiu are observing each other warily living in close quarters. There is a lot of disturbing ableist language regarding Wujiu as both of his legs were broken and he is mistreated by the manor servants. If I had to rate it today, my rating would be 2.3/5 but it’s highly rated on novelupdates.
I couldn’t wait for the translator to complete all chapters. I shamelessly MTL-ed the rest of the book.
The MTL version wasn’t so bad.
This book will probably make waves in the international danmei circuit after it gets fully translated. Until then, it remains a hidden gem.
I would have given this book 5 stars but I have a few complaints.
-The book drags it’s feet a bit after chapter 111 -The author doesn’t close the arc on some minor characters and I’ll probably never know what happened to them. -The ML acts wolffish after the main characters get together. Which was cute at times but felt a bit out of character for who he had been up until that point.
Now onto the good parts
This book almost felt like a simpler version of QJJ. A cold hearted ML who is a god of war with a physique to die for. A calculative and shrewd MC who is pretty and also sickly. The two use their relationship to hoodwink others into thinking that they’re enemies.
I particularly liked the romance. Misunderstanding were done right. Somewhat stretched but not to the degree that I wanted to pull my hair out (like I did in Dingahai Fusheng Lu).
The characterisation was nicely done. I especially liked the ML and how his character developed. The MC is a sweetheart and it was easy to sympathise and feel for him.
The antagonists were an interesting bunch of simple and complicated.
Overall nice transmigration novel.
I’ll read it again once it’s fully translated which it should be, approximately five months from now.
This book was great! I think the element I liked the most was that the two main characters weren't written as incredibly dense. They were both aware that the other was doing kind things on their behalf, and miscommunications were cleared up relatively quickly. The process of them falling in love was also sweet and comedic.
