Being a lover of nature and all things sentient this book struck a chord with me right from the start as i could never imagine living in a place like the awful, sterile citadel which aimed for perfection and insulated its citizens under tyrannical rule of the council of mages and declared the forest the enemy. This book is all about a rebellious young servant, a non-mage who dared to venture forth into the forest and was turned into a bee-shifter and declared the queen of the warrior bees. This is the story of the revolt which she and her supporter friends started which turned everything on its head for the leaders of the citadel or what was left of them after the great battle in the forest. This is a must read trilogy for all environmentalists and anyone who hates rules being imposed which are senseless and oppressive. Whenever humans wage a war on nature, nature always wins in the end and so it does in this awesome trilogy!

Being the type of reader who loves a good literary character-driven read, who would have thought I'd ever enjoy a fantasy series about bees. An extremely original story that spoke to my heart: I am definitely not a conformist! The only other fantasy I have ever enjoyed is some of Neil Gaiman, so I don't have much to compare to. But I felt the same addiction that I felt when I read Neverwhere. Unfortunately, I have a toddler at my feet all the time at the moment so I couldn't read this as fast as I wanted to. Highly recommended if you have an advernturous spirit and wish to live vicariously through a young woman who uses that to overcome adversity. Absolutely magical.
