This is not your average hiking book. It's not a 'how to hike'; it's not a 'where to hike.' It's not even a chronological compendium of the hikes the title of the book suggests it will be. No, this is a book describing one person's journey from novice hiker to expert, told in the context of the 366 hikes she did to complete the calendar (i.e., a hike for each day of the calendar). Along the way of the telling, she imparts hard-earned trail wisdom, as often gained by failures and mistakes as by the successful summits of so many peaks. A very engaging book. Read it and you'll yearn to hit the trail yourself, very probably better prepared than if you had not absorbed Beauchemin's lessons.
