“Norse Magic & Runes” by the writing collective History Brought Alive is a beginner friendly introduction to modern Norse Magic and the use of Runes, from an historical perspective. However, it should be noted that the book is aimed at those with an initial interest in Norse history, myth, and folklore, and not to more ‘esoteric’ modern readers looking for (non historical based) magic content.

The book is very well structured in nine chapters dedicated to key concepts related to Norse history; Time & People (1); Gods & Realms (2); Myth & Folklore (3); the concepts of Seiðr, Spà & Galdr; Rune and Runestones (5); Runic Divination (6); Religion (7); connection to Nature & the Unseen (8) as well as Norse Morality & Ethics (9). An exhaustive list of references is also included.

The book is well-written, interesting, and easy to read, its prose flows easily from page to page aimed primordially to interested readers without any previous formal knowledge of Norse Magic & Runes in an historical context, those readers interested in a more in-depth information about Norse magic, religion and mythology should look for more advanced works. Nevertheless, the book is an interesting beginner-friendly introduction.

I received a copy of Norse Magic & Runes by History Brought Alive from Book Sirens.
I was really excited about this book, and it really is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the Norse Culture from an introductory standpoint. I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t go into more depth with some of the topics and I really wish they would have included the correct way to pronounce all the words in old Norse, like the rune names, etc. They did, however, list a ton of references which is great for anyone who wants to dig deeper on their own. Overall, worth the read if you want to learn more or have little prior knowledge of the Norse Culture.

This was a good introduction book to the Norse people and their beliefs. I do wish that the novel went more in depth into the magic and runes, as the title describes.

I did enjoy learning more about Norse culture and how it has evolved through history. I also loved the set up of the novel, broken down into sections for ease of referencing back to certain aspects.

There are also some amazing links and references at the end of the novel for further reading and learning, which I greatly appreciated.

I received this advanced readers copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a wonderful book to get a good full picture of what norse life was like in terms of what they believed and how they lived in relation to magic and runes. It is NOT a how-to book, if that is what you are looking for. As a Norse Practitioner, this is a good overview. It helped me to determine which aspects I wanted to spend more time on and even had a few things I didn't know in it!
There were a few part that I wish had more info, like when they mentioned the God's were associated with different herbs, but I think it does a wonderful job of giving an overview.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book! It was extremely interesting and it taught me many thing I didn't know already about Norse history. It was very easy to read and understand and I didn't feel like there was so much information that it was overwhelming. It had just the right amount. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to learn more about history or even someone just looking for an interesting book to read.

This book is packed with interesting information and stories. Unfortunately it does not focus on the runes in detail so I was a bit disappointed in that.

However, from a purely educational perspective on the Nordic history and lifestyle this book is worth taking a look at.
