Milk Teeth

Sephorina Breathland would do anything for her family. She’d even trick men into coming home with her so her kinfolk can kill them and drink their blood. Because the Breathlands are anything but your typical gaggle of podunks. Sephorina’s mama has been pregnant with twins for nine years and is ready to pop. Her daddy lives in the bathtub trying to regrow the arms and legs he lost after the neighbors caught him eviscerating their cattle. And her brother, Hughie, believes that maybe with their pops laid up, it should be him who calls the shots. And while every family has its secrets, none has a secret as dark as theirs. And when Sephorina discovers it, she’s going to call for a family meeting—and bring along a freshly sharpened hatchet. Because the Breathlands might have their problems, but they are getting sorted out tonight.

EARLY PRAISE

“Milk Teeth is a gloriously messed-up gnarly rollercoaster of a tale; a deep dark dive into supernatural horror, twisted family secrets, weaponized sexuality and weird religion all set in the desolate Deep South. Guaranteed to grab you by the throat and drag you along for the ride.” Tabatha Wood—Author of Dark Winds Over Wellington and Seeds

"Milk Teeth is a new bizarro witching tale from the imagination of Andrew Post. In this most peculiar oddity, Post showcases the prodigious storytelling abilities readers have come to enjoy from his previous works, Chop Shop, Mondo Crimson and Switchboard. Here is just another fantastic book that will swallow up a reader's imagination from start to finish." Andrew ‘The Book Dad’

"Andrew Post delivers a crazy, thrilling, and gory punch with Milk Teeth. It feels like a melting pot of a Rob Zombie screenplay and an unworldly Clive Barker horror story." E. Reyes—Author of The Halloween Grindhouse and The House on Moon Creek Avenue

I have officially decided to forgo my dream of becoming a writer to pursue a new life as a Milk Maid. For days I've walked around seeing life through colored glasses that quickly bypass rose shades, instead settling on the color of blood. This hellish sabbatical my brain has been on is the direct result of Andrew Post's "Milk Teeth". "Milk Teeth" is like walking into your MeMaw's kitchen from hanging outside and grabbing a drink from her fridge only to find the mason jar you just swigged cherry Kool-Aid from did not actually contain Kool-Aid. It's like picking out your first car with Gramps, only you aren't at a dealership, you're in his backyard looking through an entire collection of used cars, but you don't know how they got there, and your gut tells you not to ask. It's like listening to your siblings noisily watching a horror movie upstairs, something about devouring human flesh, then remembering there's no TV upstairs. "Milk Teeth" is an absolute beast. Set in the backwoods of Virginia, Andrew Post gives life to concepts and creatures that would have Lovecraft worshiping at his feet. "Milk Teeth" guides us through relentless headtrips and family secrets that would render the Manson family sanitized, only to leave you salivating for more when it's all over. It acts as a tug-of-war between "That was one of the best books I've ever read" and "What the f*ck did I just read?" ultimately ending in a tie that begs never to be broken. So, you want to be a Milk Maid too? Check out "Milk Teeth" and let me know. I think I can get you in.

Thanks again to Snow Capped Press for getting this title into the hands of us humble demons. Thanks also to Andrew Post, who not only wrote this insanity, but created a literary environment hyper supportive of females in horror!

MILK TEETH is a story that’s going to stay with me for a while, one that I won’t be able to cast from my mind, one that I wish I had more of. I knew, after meeting Sephorina and the other Breathlands, that I had found something unlike I’d ever read before, something with bite, something so well-crafted I couldn’t stay away, the prose just dripping with creativity.

Andrew Post has created a world intoxicating as it is disturbing. His writing alone is stellar, and on top of it the voices for this backwoods, demon-worshipping, milk-sucking family, are out of this world. Some of THE BEST work I’ve seen when it comes to their dialogue. I completely believed that these characters existed and that I’d find them if one day I thought to get lost deep within the sticks of Virginia. Though this story is short, it packs a punch to the gut that will leave you breathless.

Unique, thrilling, bizarre. Give MILK TEETH a try. You won’t regret it. You’ll only be hungry for more.

A beautiful coming of age story about a young woman and what she does in order to protect her family. That, plus cultish family values, blood (lots), guts, grotesque descriptions, and lots more milky family fun. Post uses the setting and language to really give the family a personality and dynamic that doesn't require much backstory. Put off some very House of 1000 Corpses/Devils Rejects vibes. At first I thought it was going to be just writing for shock factor, but turned out to be a very well built story that made me want it to just keep going. I need more Breathlands story!

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this novella, and honestly that's good because it is something I never could have expected. Post employs a unique language here to create a sense of this backwoods family that is unlike any we've ever met. Yet also relateable and authentic feeling. The storyline was entertaining and moved at a quick pace, whisking you along with it. I like that the author didn't spell everything out but gave you just enough information to get a grasp of this universe and its rules. I will say, the ending felt a tad abrupt for me, I definitely feel like there is more story here to tell and I look forward to any follow up Post may write.

A Laymon-esque backwoods family with a penchant for drinking blood, and a kick-ass young woman protagonist keeping their shit together. Milk Teeth shows us it’s not only the humans in the arse-end of nowhere we need to be afraid of. Part Texas Chainsaw, part Wishmaster, I hope Post creates more stories within this universe as I feel there is still much to learn …

A highly enjoyable tale with enough violence to please us more extreme readers; you’ll be glad you didn’t take a wrong turn and happen across the Breathlands …

I am really mad this is a novella. I was really into this creepy story and it’s blood thirsty characters, and then the book ended. It’s like blindly munching away at a really addictive bag of chips, then finding out u ate the whole bag and still crave more.
Where does Andrew Post come up with his ideas? His mind must go to some dark and horrific places to write the books he does. In Milk Teeth, Post leaves no trigger untouched and no gory detail left out. Thank god there are no illustrations in this novella, I don’t know if I could have dealt with a visual. Lol The images my own imagination created were bad enough.
I loved the protagonist, Sephorina. She is a bad ass, backwoods, goal oriented girl who is just trying to help her strange family survive. My mind kept going right to Ruthie from Netflix’s Ozark series. I could hear her accent and feel her attitude. God forbid this novella becomes a movie, but if it does Ruthie should be cast.
Without giving the whole book away, the story involves blood consuming creatures that worship demon. They’re not quite vampires, the demon is not quite the devil. But they are no less terrifying. The best part is, you’re going to root for them! Lol.
I really recommend this novella for a quick taste of horror, with a tad bit of humor and a whole lot of imagination.

Milk teeth is as fascinating as it is bizarre, and Post’s universe reminded me a lot of Rob Zombie’s: vibrant characters, creepy and uncomfortable atmosphere, yet there is still room for comedic relief. A truly interesting read which is guaranteed to leave you with a strange after taste. You’ll be thinking about this book for a while.

Imaginative and sharp, Milk Teeth follows a family who worships a demon, outlining the lengths they will go to express their devotion. This story is wholly unique, bringing horror elements to life in a fantastical way. The backwoods setting and bold (ok ya and I guess deranged) characters pulled me into the story and took a strong hold, even in places where the plot seemed stagnant. The progression felt anticlimactic overall but, the nightmarish energy is present throughout.

One of the most original cult based horrors I've ever read. I don't really want to write down what it is about in details, because the moment of surprise was what made this experience so pleasant to me.

A family of evil worshipers with almost supernatural abilities are living off of their victims and dedicate their lives to the entity they worship. However, as we all know already, prayers to evil always come with a weird twist.

The main character, a young girl, has to go through literal heaven and hell to do what is best for her family. But along the way, she also needs to decide who her real family truly is. And is there any limit to how far she would go to protect them?

What a completely fu*ked up story 😅 Visualising it was an absolute nightmare and I loved dreaming about it! It's disturbing, it's shocking and I found myself rooting for this twisted family of sickos, and especially for the main character.

Andrew really managed to pack a lot of tension into a very little words and it worked perfectly. This is nothing like the sexy witches and mistresses of Satan. This is smelly, gory and bloody reality of choosing evil over anything else and not having the need to hide behind the hypocrisy of being good people. There's no such a thing!

I grabbed this gem immediately after reading a recommendation from one of my favorite authors.

It did not disappoint.

Southern horror at its finest! The intricately crafted gore had my stomach churning at times. Let me put it this way… I’ve given birth to six children and will never look at childbirth the same way after reading this story. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, folks.

The MC is sassy, lovable, and strong. The history of this fictional family and the deity they worship is so mind-blowingly detailed.

The research and care that went into creating this story is abundantly clear, and I’ve been inspired by this author’s dedication to their craft. 🤘🏻

Give it a try. It flips so many tropes on their heads in the most delightfully gruesome ways.

**Review originally published in SCREAM Magazine**

The Breathlands are like any other family from the backwoods. You know, like those in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, and Wrong Turn. Sephorina has her hands full trying to take care of everyone. Her mama is nine years pregnant with twins and about to burst. Her daddy lives in a bathtub trying to regrow all four recently lost limbs. Her grandma consorts with the supernatural and brews regenerating blood potions. And her brother Hughie is a jerk. It’s up to Sephorina to seduce and kill young men so their “milk” can be drained for her daddy’s restoration.

This is one of those books I will never forget. It reads at a blistering pace with jaw-dropping moments around every corner. It’s bizarre, hilarious, and repulsive in the best way possible. In other words, pure entertainment. So many scenes - such as the disgusting birthing of the twins or their terrifying transformations later on - are seared into my brain forever. In addition to the overall strangeness and vulgarity, I love the world that author Andrew Post built: the cult-like nature of the family, the various rituals and folk horror deities, and so on.

With a story like this, Post could easily have stayed in the extreme horror territory and relied on shock value alone, but he’s smarter than that. Yes it’s campy, gory, shocking, and gross. But, it’s also a story about family dynamics and misfortune that is very well written. Apart from all the murder and pacts with demons, the Breathlands could be any old family trying to make their way in life. You find yourself rooting for the big sister who murders men to protect her family, and that tension between sinister audacity and sympathetic authenticity is part of what makes this novella so great.

Milk Teeth is a nonstop thrillride of unnatural oddities and quirky characters; a horrifying story that also has a lot of heart. It’s equal parts redneck Lovecraft and Rob Zombie, but it also feels like its own unique entry in the hillbilly/cosmic/folk horror genre. There is much left to be explored in the world of the Breathlands, and I sincerely hope the author will grace us with a sequel in the near future!

Review of Milk Teeth:

Content Warning -

Gruesome violence-Coarse Language-Sexual content / innuendo / deceit

Talk of supposed incest-Bodily fluids-Unnatural pregnancy

Talk that could be considered blasphemous and heretical

Mention of a racist man with violent inclinations to match

This is a fantastic combo of What Big Teeth by Szabo meeting The Hills Have Eyes, add in a dash of serial killerism...

This was my first book from author, Andrew Post. It was completely insane. Like nothing I’ve read.

A family that follows and worships a different God. A god of blood, murder and hunger. There is A LOT of gore in this one. A really strange and gruesome birth scene. Some awkward moments with Saran Wrap and a bathtub. The world this family lives in is full of betrayal and backstabbing but the main character, Sephorina is loyal to a fault and I loved her.

I have another Andrew Post on my TBR shelf and it will be moving up soon. I love this weird world he’s created.

🩸𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙠 𝙏𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙝⁣

All of the comparisons I’ve heard this akin to are correct…Rob Zombie, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes…it’s like they all got together to have some super twisted, deranged book baby. 😬 Seriously. This book is something…and I couldn’t put it down. Because, you know, I happen to enjoy some crazy, gory, weird reads. ⁣

Poor Sephorina…she literally is like the Cinderella of the story…caring for everyone but herself…making sure to lure and kill young men so they can be “milked” for her dad’s restoration. Yeah, her dad is living in a bathtub and trying to regrow his limbs, while his mother is years pregnant with dreadful twins, and her grandmother is some kind of witchy woman brewing blood potions. And we’ll just forget her brother because…well, he needs forgotten. 😂 The Breathlands are one weird family, folks.⁣

…but, for some reason you find yourself not totally repulsed by what would certainly be considered repulsive behavior and events. These people are, dare I say, likeable? (Well, except the brother.) ⁣

The world Post creates isn’t just full of shock value. It’s well crafted; it’s creative; and it’s a place that I wish I could spend more time in (as an outsider looking in through the pages, for course). He really could have made this simply a gnarly, messed up, gory story, but he did more than that and created a family and world that is all of that but also transcends that trope. ⁣

If you’re into those books that leave you saying to yourself, “Ummm what? What in the what? What did I just read? Whaaaaat is this?”…well, my friend, you need add this to #tbr right now. It’s bizarre and full of all the weirdness you can hope for. ⁣

Milk Teeth

Sephorina loves her family, and it’s her job to help take care of them. She draws in the milkers so they can survive. This is a story of family, cannibals, and bad decisions. I had a great time reading this and I absolutely am smitten with the title for some odd reason. If you liked Kin, Brother, or Off Season I think you might enjoy this too!

4.5 stars, rounded up. I very much enjoyed this book! It's super fun bizarre with a twist. I've seen it compared to House of 1000 Corpses, and I'd say that's fairly accurate, just with an added whiff of hellfire. I would love to read more about the Breathlands in the future!

Milk Teeth is twisted, strange, and thoroughly unsettling. It's even a bit gross, so don't visualize too much of it or you might just puke. Andrew Post fully embraces his dark side here, there's no question about that!

I've now read this novella four times and it has enthralled me with every return. Let's hope Post continues Sephorina's journey in a future sequel! With enough demand, maybe we can persuade him to write it.

***
I first read this novella in early 2021 when it was first self-published under Post's pseudonym, Wren Pasdot. It is because of that initial experience as a reader of the work that I have decided to include my rating on this listing (which basically rewords the original review I wrote back then). That was and is my unbiased opinion of this novella then and now.

It was maybe eight months later in 2021 that I then approached Post about publishing this book under Snow-Capped Press. It has since been released as an updated e-book and pocketbook paperback with fresh edits, formatting, and design work.
