After Perfect: A Novel

Rate this book
Thirty-six-year-old Gabriella Stevens is living a quiet and content fairy tale as a devoted housewife to Simon—just as her traditional Filipino mother has always told her to do—when, after sixteen years of marriage and twenty years together, he tells he wants a divorce.

Simon has been Gabby’s everything since they were kids; without him, her world implodes. But as she navigates her way through the wreckage of the marriage she thought would last forever, she becomes determined to make a life on her own. With New York City as her backdrop, Gabby—single for the first time since she was a teenager—goes back to school, gets her first real job, and faces unfamiliar reality with determination.

Gabby’s life takes another turn when she falls in love with her mysterious but utterly beautiful creative writing professor, Colt. Being with Colt is exhilarating for her—something new, something exciting and beyond understanding. He is almost seven years her junior, and a literary genius. But he is also battling demons of his own: a tragic past that may have made him incapable of love.

Is Gabby destined for another heartbreak—or will her connection with Colt be what unbreaks her?

Angsty. A strong heroine has a lot of personal growth after her husband of 20 years cheats on her and leaves her for the OW (off page). She is incredibly even tempered but has a strong back bone.

It was an enjoyable read.

The heroine suffers further heartbreak from the H (new guy) but stands her ground when it counted.

We are left with a HFN. An epilogue would have been appreciated but the ending does work.

IMPACTFUL READ: I read After Perfect in two sittings- and that is testament to how engaging the story and writing is. This is a book about starting over and about picking yourself up when the comfortable world you know spits you out. I took a journey with Gabby around New York. I went with her to graduate school. I had a huge crush at mysterious Colt and made friends with Trina. I constantly updated my best friend Felicity. I sat by the bench to contemplate and write at Washington Park. I had dinner with her loving parents. I made a bookstore my second home. I took advice from the wisdom of a new friend. I met the adorable Katy Perry. I dealt with betrayal twice. And I embraced the surprises life offered.

Gabby, for all the privileges available to her- took the harder path. But it is the one that made her discover her strength, uncover her potential and made her capable to love again. It is the path where she learned to love herself and stand on her own.

I love the side characters so much. Thomas is my favorite and I am fiercely hoping I meet someone like him in my lifetime. Also, Gabby’s father is so endearing and reminded me of the unconditional love of my parents. The book abounds with references to Filipino food and culture. I am proud that Gabby is grounded on her roots.

If there is something I wish more of- it is that I wanted to read more about how Gabby’s life influence her writing. But the book offered a snapshot of these writers (Colt included) mirroring themselves in their works. Adding a perspective from Colt would definitely make me swoon too! Maybe a sequel would follow?

After Perfect ignited in me a resolve to take a look at where I am now- pandemic situation and all. This prolonged crisis inevitably induces anxiety and before it consumes me, I would channel my thoughts and actions to how I can make changes towards a life well-lived. Now is a perfect time to examine my life (reminded me of a quote from Socrates).

Gabby was brave to live, brave to love and brave to face what the future might hold. And I am taking inspiration from her moving forward.

I was so sure how to rate this book at the first 75% of the book but the last part was a rollercoaster so I'm still confused about my feelings.

What I liked

This book succesfully delivered the goods in the swoons department. Gabby and Colt's whirlwind (& messy) romance perfectly fits my preference when it comes to romance development. I love the banter, the secret relationship, and the spices!

Gabriella Stevens, as the protagonist, is a solid character & I breeze through her parts in the book. It felt like I know her in real life & she's a friend who is confessing her thoughts to me.

The writing style is a A+++ I won't be able to finish this book in less than 48 hours if the narration + the voice of the character is unrealistic.

Overall, After Perfect is a strong introduction of the author's creativity. The cross between women's fiction & romance (as the main subplot) totally worked with the main character's personality. Maan Gabriel's debut novel did not shy from giving a picture-perfect image of what is life after divorce.

More thoughts to come after the author event (Feb. 6) & watch out for my tiktok review soon.

BOOK REVIEW

After Perfect by Maan Gabriel

My overall thoughts after reading After Perfect by Maan Gabriel. This novel is a proof that some make believe stories may happen in real-life, and that life’s complexities happen for specific reasons.

Gabby is charming, witty, responsible, brave, and courageous. She is also the type of character who loves and gives her everything when it comes to love. She is however, the perfect definition of messy imperfect: she did not fail to represent some women in our generation today. Despite her failed marriage, and her troubles, she never loses her drive, her grit, and her hope. She got up and became independent. Her resilience is a symbol that no matter how hard life knocks you down, you can still try. That second chance in love may also lead you in the right direction. I’m also impressed with the other characters in this novel, especially her support group. The group includes her parents, her best friend Felicity, and Thomas. It’s admirable that they are around during her weakest points. As for Simon, I really dislike him, but I’m glad that he realizes his mistakes. I also have a love and hate relationship with Colt’s character. The love is because he loves Gabby, and hate is because there is a part in this novel I felt he acted immature. I did feel that he redeemed himself towards the end.

I thought this novel has a fast-paced start, but still hits all the notes. All the events seemed to blend perfectly. Ms. Maan Gabriel wrote a novel I wish never ended. A reader can tell when an author poured her passion in her work. I can safely say this is what she wants to convey to her readers, to compel them, be entice with the story, and she succeeded! Another thing I really love about her writing style is that she has focus. She made sure this is centralized not only in Gabby’s love story, but also her life story, and it has an emotional, satisfying, and optimistic ending. I love her perspective and point of view. I love all the emotions she laid on in this story. It just a straight-up pleasure.

I read the first chapter of this book on a workday and knew right away it was going to be a good one so I put it down until the weekend because I wanted to give it my 💯 attention without the distraction of work. I wouldnt be wrong though because on Sunday morning I went to Starbucks to read a “few” chapters only to realize its past lunch time, I’ve only had coffee and am halfway through the book. I cannot put it down. By 2:00am, Im sitting in bed with used tissues and an almost empty box beside me while I ugly sobbed up to the author’s note.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review:
That said, this is a 5 star read for me. I loved the romance aspect of it but its not just the romance. The protagonist is not a damsel in distress waiting for love to save her NO. She went from being sheltered, relying on everyone around her - husband, parents, friends - to finding her own happiness while navigating a divorce and opening her heart to love again. It is a beautiful story of heartache and resilience, family, friendship and self-love. A story and characters I will remember for a long time. And while I disliked some of Simon and Colt’s actions, they are huge part of who Gabby turned out to be. A strong, independent woman who refuses to take less than the kind of love she gives. This book made me ache (Simon/Gabby), cry (Colty/Gabby), laugh out loud (Felicity/Thomas) and look forward to the future (motherhood) It is equal parts emotional, witty and inspiring and is highly recommended.

I admit that this is one of those non-YA Fantasy that I usually read, but, surprisingly I like this book. It's a page turner that I keep on reading that I can devour it in one day (if I'm not enslaved by the corporate work). I love how the author wrote this book, the good flow makes me want to read it in one sitting.

Another thing I love After Perfect, women's independence and how it's never too late a new direction in life. Gabby is a representation of all women who gets their heart broken but is strong enough to stand again.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a very different read for me but I really enjoyed it. It’s a finding yourself after heartbreak kind of story. Very emotional and honest with plenty of heartfelt moments about resetting your life expectations when things don’t go to plan.

“There is no darkness if sunshine is I.”

Another book that I binged read in less than a day. The writing was beautiful and the pacing was just right. You just want to keep going and see how the story will end. The unpredictable attraction between Gabby and Colt drew me in. There was something about the writing that reminds you of how you dealt with your past heartbreak. You didn’t have the exact same story but it reminded you of being broken, the pain, that dreadful feeling on how you will continue to live when the rest of the world moves on. But my favorite part was how it reminded you that you are stronger than you think and people who love you will help you get through it. Each character spoke to my heart. I love “in love’ Colt. The moment he walked in the room I knew I would fall for him as well. Although he frustrated me and gave me that Papa Piolo moment “I demand an explanation!” (a 🇵🇭 movie reference). But I understand his fears. Loving Gabby was something he wasn’t expecting and something he had to overcome. I was rooting for Gabby's character as she figures out how to be independent. Her strength and her big heart was something to admire. Thomas's wisdom and friendship is something I want. Felicity was me at one point. When you love both of your friends so much that their break up is also yours. One character I did not expect to love was Simon. No, I didn't want them to get back together. I wanted to hate him but he wasn’t really a bad guy. How can you hate someone you love and care for half of your life? I have to say I cried more when their love story ended.

A beautiful debut novel. This book gives some CoHo and TJR vibes but it was it’s own sunshine. As a romantic I wish there was at least another chapter or 2 before it ended. But as a realist the ending was just enough.

After Perfect is a story of thirty six year old Gabriella Stevens when after sixteen years of marriage to her husband Simon ends up in a divorce. He is Gabby’s everything and starting and making a life of her own seems daunting as her world revolves around him, being a devoted wife she is. Trying to build her life back, she goes to school, gets a job and be independent. When an unexpected thing happens - meeting and eventually falls in love with her writing professor Colt, she was in for roller coaster ride.

The book is more than romance story. It is about standing up and choosing what you want in life, second chances which we all deserve and starting again and making new beginnings.

I like how she was able to portray her relationship with her ex-husband in ways that they remain civil and friends, understanding and respecting each other. Not everybody can probably relate to this situation but I find it refreshing take on an otherwise turbulent and vindictive stance of being divorce. I like how she can prove that after being dependent on another human being all her life, she can build a life of her own. Although I know people fall in love in whirlwind romance or in love at first sight, but coming from divorce, I find it hard to see that somebody can fall head over heels on another person right away. But yes when love strikes you, it doesn’t choose what time, where and who. You just know it.

This is a timely read for the month of love. Something to give you hope and so much love, you own after perfect.

I really enjoyed the story. Gabby is 36 years old and is freshly going through a divorce. She’s hurt but she’s not sulking in her situation. She knows that she needs to move on, but also recognizes that she doesn’t want to move on too fast. Colt, his name is really cute. “This man is a dream I don’t want to wake up from.” I do like that he cares for her, but it seemed a little too aggressive and/or forced in the beginning. He seemed to be everywhere she turned. I do like that this is an older student/teacher romance (she: 36; he: 30).

I don’t really like Simon, her ex. They have a deep relationship because they were childhood friends, but I don’t like how he treated Gabby and also how his parents blame her for their marriage ending. In addition, I don’t like how Gabby felt it was her fault in the marriage ending. I guess I could understand where she’s coming from, but I don’t like it.

The misunderstanding towards the end between Gabby and Colt was predictable but I appreciate that the author didn’t quickly mend it to get that HEA. I actually respect the way it ended.

The writing was great and had a lot of good quotes. I also like how Colt’s writing lessons/advice make me want to pick up a pen and paper to start writing. “Good writers succeed, but new writers fail trying. Write what you know.”

Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for my honest review.

36 year old Filipino-American Gaby is navigating the breakup of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart Simon. She enrols on a creative writing programme, finds herself a new job and apartment and plunges headlong into a relationship with her creative writing professor, Colt.

I don't tend to read a lot of romance stories but I liked the premise of this and was hoping for an exploration of Gaby's Filipino-American culture and starting out again in your late 30's. While it was an easy, comforting read I never really gelled with this. I couldn't get invested in the Gaby/Colt relationship which I found actually very uncomfortable given the power imbalance there and there's next to no exploration of that. I did enjoy some of the supporting characters, especially Thomas, and the insight into how Gaby's friendships changed following her divorce. In the end. everything is wrapped up too neatly and there was nowhere near as much attention given to Gaby's Filipino background as I would have liked - there was potential to draw out Gaby's relationship with her traditional mother so much more.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this advance review copy.

After Perfect is Maan Gabriel's first book, the story is about Gabriella Stevens, who suddenly finds herself in turmoil as things abruptly start changing in her life when her husband, whom she's known for twenty years, suddenly asks for a divorce.

I like Gabriella, who truly is the star of this book. I really like the details of her Filipino background and how much it shaped her character. I love reading her journey of finally doing things for herself and gaining confidence. It's so relatable because not every adult has their life together. She has lovely friends and supportive parents. I like reading about the complexity of her relationship with her parents, especially with her Mom, who grew up with very traditional Filipino values. The romance part of this wasn't really engaging to me. To be honest, I thought it ended abruptly for my taste. She honestly deserved better than a dull character like Colt.

I read an ARC and I’ve finally met Gabriella Stevens and her heartwarming story after the so-called perfect life as an ardent wife to Simon. The divorce came unexpectedly and Gabby has to live a single life again after 20 years. For a long time, she was so dependent and lives in ways that are expected from her.

This novel is a journey of self-discovery, new beginnings, and second chances. Gabby’s bold decision to stand on her own and do the things that she exactly wants is inspiring.

🌝 The following are the things I LOVE in this book:
-strong friendship of Gabby and Felicity
-Gabby in allowing herself to fall in love again
-Colt’s lectures on creative writing. ( It seems that I'm also learning from his teachings.)
-Gabby working on an independent bookstore and build wonderful friendship with the owner, Thomas.
-Gabby’s super supportive parents.
-Filipino representations.

Maan Gabriel’s debut novel is heartwarming and a wonderful read this coming fall.

I am so feeling books that feature women in their 30's, I just feel seen!

Make this your next read if you enjoy:
✊ Empowerment of finding one's self
👭 Strong and fun friendships
💕 Two fold perspective on Love
💫 Bonus, gorgeous cover

On feeling seen: our main character, Gabriel who is at the crossroads of her life; I can relate to her. All her life she has people taking care of her and now she's discovering what she truly wants. This was a wonderful journey to follow, The After.

What shone thru for me on this debut novel was the unshakable friendships and the growing voice of a woman becoming more confident. I enjoyed the shades of complication and the showcase of how love is more dimensional than we think.

Thank you to Maan Gabriel for a gifted copy!

Finished this book in two readings.
A story of new beginnings, friendship & self awareness

Gabby’s one tough woman, she bounced back after getting divorced, falls in love with life again & eventually fell in love. It shows how tough Pinays are in general.

I loved Felicity & Thomas, they are an example of friends you would want to have in your life ♥️

I just wish the love story of Gabby & Colt was deeper, or Colt’s character was more in depth same as how Gabby’s character was described. But nonetheless it was a really exciting read!

I had a really great time reading After Perfect and really so proud of @maan_gabriel for creating this gem of a book!

I didn’t expect that I would be so attached with everybody here. I felt like Gabby was a long-time friend of mine and I so wanted her to have her happy ever after. Colt was mysteriously charming and I loved him for it. Thomas was a gem! And surprisingly, I even felt for Simon too and hoped that he’d have a happy ending of his own. ❤️

Loved it and would definitely recommend!

What an endearing story but man things escalated quickly I seriously thought I would be so upset with the ending but it was beautiful.  Oh how it could have went a different direction and I'm not sure what I would have done.  I mean I'm a wreck now I held my breath for the last few chapters, I loved it. Gabby was such a sweetie and I loved her friendships they were such a delight.  This book was absolutely beautiful and I highly, highly recommend

Gabby was shaken when her 20-year marriage ended, but once she resolves to own her life choices going forward—she blossoms. Then a romance she never could have imagined tests her new-found courage. The author weaves a realistic and challenging journey for Gabby and I cheered for her when she faced it with new-found confidence.

Gabby has to start over. Insecure and scared, she has to redefine life. When she meets a man who is as unpredictable as he is handsome, it challenges her to find her own strength. A relatable protagonist in a sweet story of second chances.

There were some bright moments, but ultimately I wasn't invested in the "love story" if you could even call it that. I wish the book had been entirely focused on Gabby and how she picks up the pieces after her divorce. I was even invested in how she and her ex-husband navigated returning to the friendship they once shared. But in all that, the author just dumped (in my opinion) a random romance that wasn't fleshed out at all. I feel like I didn't even know Colt. Anything mentioned about him that would flesh out his character was mentioned in passing. To me he ultimately just represented a guy with some seriously toxic traits, who needed serious therapy. I appreciated Gabby's strength and she actually was a very self aware character. I wish we'd kept the focus on just her.

I didn't like the hero - he was the archetype of the tortured asshole writing professor who's a dick to everyone but because he's hot people forgive him for it. I could tell that any feelings the main character developed for him was going to make me roll my eyes and get frustrated, so I stopped.

I quit 22% of the way through the book.

After sixteen years of being married, Gabriella “Gabby” Stevens and her husband, Simon, called it quits. Simon initiated the divorce. At 36 years old, Gabby is forced to start all over again. She enrolled at creative writing grad school in NYU, worked part-time as a sales associate in an indie bookstore, and moved out of the apartment she shared with Simon.

For the first time since she dated Simon in high school, Gabby became independent. And through the process, she did not expect to feel more for Colt James, her creative writing professor.

I am a fan of starting over stories. Stories about redemption, rebirth after hitting rock bottom. I find myself cheering for Gabby. I know she deserves a second chance for herself, an opportunity to live a life outside her sheltered cocoon. Sometimes we get so comfortable being part of a couple that we lose ourselves somewhere along the way. I am happy for Gabby’s journey towards self re-discovery.

I celebrate Gabby’s old and new friendships. For me, it’s a combination of loyalty and trust. And I love the Filipino parent representation: the fussy, feisty, but shopaholic Filipina mother. I love how protective Gabby’s parents are, and how they are there for her despite that she is in her mid-30s.

NYC as backdrop is always refreshing and the writing style transported me to these unique places in New York. My mouth watered at the thought of eating Italian food at Rosa’s, excited at the prospect of watching drag queens at Lips, and longed to browse at Gallagher Books.

This is not just romance. It is about a woman’s journey on life after divorce, especially if the woman is childless. As what I said, I am a fan of starting over stories and for me, Gabby’s divorce is a blessing in disguise—a positive change long awaited.

I felt though, that it is too soon for Gabby to fall in love again. But hey, these things cannot be controlled. With Gabby, I feel that she is mature enough to know the consequences of rushing into another relationship. I just felt that she could have enjoyed being single a tad more. Still, I love the unexpected connection.❤️

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. ❤️
