Camille Jourdy

Since Camille Jourdy finished her education in Fine Arts, this French author divides her time between her works as illustrator of children´s books and her true passion: comic creation.

Her very first contribution to the graphic narrative world takes place in 2004, when her first comic is published; Une araignée, des tagliatelles et au lit, tu parles d´une vie. This work shows a firm experimental vocation, where Jourdy plays with the narrative possibilities of the media.

After some years devoted to producing children´s works, the author in parallel dedicates part of her time to the creation of her most ambitious work: Rosalie Blum. In 2007, the first volume of the trilogy is published in France. And it is finished by the launching of the third volume of the series two years later.

As a whole, Rosalie Blum is enthusiastically received by critics and audience. Many awards, among which the critics´ award in France and the new writer´s award in the Angoulême festival can be stressed, bear correspondence to the succeed of this work.

One of the best graphic novels I've read in a long time! This was just so imaginative, so fun, so lovely. It reminded me of a ghibli film--the concept of spirited away, the whimsicalness of totoro, and the imaginativeness of adventure time, all in one book. The art was incredible and I would love to get some prints of some of the panels in here. So many beautiful scenes and at heart, a beautiful story about love, anger, and forgiveness.

Recomendado.

I four-starred enjoyed and appreciated Jourdy’s graphic novel as an adult, but I know I would have five-starred loved this as a kid. The story - about a little girl who runs away, ends up in a sort of fairy land, and then helps save the day against an evil tyrannical emperor (who is a tom cat) has all sorts of sassy little asides going on within the frame of the bigger story. It’s the kind of story I really loved as a kid (Pickle Pickle Pickle Juice was a book like this for me; Goldbug in Cars and Trucks and Things That Go also had this quality).

Point positif : YA DES NAIN DANS LE LIVRE (meme si c ecrit "lutin" 👀)

I received an electronic ARC from First Second Books through NetGalley.
A look at what happens when an unhappy child runs away and ends up in another world. This young girl is unhappy being with her father, stepmom and stepsisters. She runs off into the forest leaving everyone else at the campsite. To her surprise, she meets two small talking characters (elves?) and follows them through the tunnel to their home. Adventures follow as they attempt to rescue fellow villagers from the emperor's castle. After successfully defeating the emperor, rescuing the Wondrous Wonders and villagers, and heading back to the village, the girl decides she does want to go back to her home. The book ends with her rejoining her family at their trailer.
The soft focused illustrations work but offer a definite blurry cast to the whole book. The story is disjointed but does read as a fairytale. Others will appreciate the writer's style but I prefer leaving less for the reader to fill in and more connections so the plot works in all places. It's hard to figure out the target audience for this book.

This was so, so, so incredibly sweet, and weird, and dreamy.
It makes me think of Over the Garden Wall, but summertime, and with an art style similar to old French comics from the 60’s.

What’s the point of leaving a review if it doesn’t say something new?
My child and future adults, we have the equivalent of the pastels of the Moomin world topped with the wit of Tony Wolf (Antonio Lupatelli) and the bonkers tendencies of Alice in Wonderland - a wondrous wonder, indeed.
Make no mistake, Camille Jourdy’s fantastical world is authentic, its characters curious and silly, its mood equally witty and soothing, its aesthetic style cordially tender and radiant.
I am partial to sardonic fox(es), grumpy elves, conformist chicken and brilliant elderly characters, amazing colours, and mad creatures doing mad things.
Although there is a depth to this story world and it’s still enjoyable without having to look deeper.
I wish the story were longer - or in other words, I got invested in its characters and world. The premise is not this book’s strongest suit. 4/5 for the plot. 5 x 5 for everything else. I would love to see the characters in other stories; all of them deserve more attention. The translator did a wonderful job. If you are a French speaker, I wonder if the rhymes and jokes have any other nuances. I will give the original a go myself, just because I would be happy to revisit this story world. Luv ya WW!
arsenic, ranch dressing, tutu, pee, nanny, tutu, nanny, Maurice, fox. Have I said fox? Fox.
PS - Man, I’ve had an epiphany. Think both (or all 3) Brueghels’ and Bosch’s work. Now, think the opposite. Haha. It’s the carnivalesque without the grotesque. In other words, it’s cute.

I received an Advance Review Copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Final rating: 3.5 ⭐

I sent in a request for this book because I was attracted to the pretty cover. The art style inside was even prettier. The Wondrous Wonders is a short graphic novel for children that was so dreamy yet funny to read. Plot-wise, it's very simple and actually very random. The character designs are interesting and some, weird. The characters were definitely my favorite part of the book. It's a story about family and love, friends and community, but also about bringing down tyranny. An interesting children's book, indeed! Adults like myself would also have a fun time reading this.
