BEAR

After a month of being away from the Reapers to care for my mom, I was ready to return to normal club life. When I first saw Gillian, everything changed. By the time I found out what she was running from, it was too late.

I know this is a debut book so I'll start by saying that it was a great premise with a lot of potential. I wish that the book worked for me.

First, I couldn't get on board for Bear with Gillian. She is horribly abused and he sets out to prove to her "that all men aren't like that" and basically just proves that they are. Being instantly obsessed, overbearingly protective and stalkerish is not endearing when he puts no effort into finding out what her triggers and trauma are. He never asks her what happened to her. He also provides further physical and mental abuse from the first moment they meet. Gillian is so used to that she just thinks it's normal, especially since she finds him attractive. There are so many red flags in the beginning of the relationship. He touches her without consent, he grabs her, drags her into rooms, talks about punishing her, demands respect he doesn't deserve, blames her for his temper and need to punish her, the list goes on and on.

I was ENRAGED by this conversation:
"What are you thinking about?" Bear asks, bringing me out of my thoughts.
About an apartment, I hand him my phone
"I told you that you don't need an apartment. I care for you and want what is best. I don't want you to have to worry about looking for a place or having to pay rent! My room should be enough!" He raises his voice.
I regret bring it up. He has never gotten this bad about it. Never raised his voice at me when I brought it up.
"Why can't you just be thankful I'm letting you stay in my room?" he asks
I stare at him, taking a step back. Flashbacks start playing my mind as he continues to yell at me.
"Why can't you just be grateful for everything I've given you?" Jared yells, slapping me
Tears fill my eyes . The sting from the slap resurfaces on my check, I cradle my cheek and stare at Bear's feet.

At this point she has a panic attack but there is never any acknowledgment or understanding what triggers it or on Bear's part that he is an abusive asshole, too.

Gillian for her part, is a VERY uneven character. Her PTSD is extremely convenient and pops up only when the author notices it should but the author misses tons of instances when it should have even more.

Then there are HUGE plot holes and bizarre actions of the MC. Gillian is burned by her boyfriend. We get a small flashback on this but absolutely no info on how she survived. Frankly, she shouldn't have based on the info we are given. Spoiler: How did the cops get involved? How did the bad guy know she would go to the gas station? How did the tech guy know how many men were around the warehouse? Just details that are important were not included.

The MC itself was ridiculous. Bear literally has a room all to himself in the gym so he can lose his temper because the other BIG BAD MC Members are afraid of him when he loses his temper. WTF? C'mon. They keep the "prostitutes" isolated. I guess they have their own cat house somewhere on the compound? Even the MC members cook. No women anywhere are seen cleaning, bartending or anything else domestic, let alone sex during the parties. No one has a girlfriend or a hook up during the parties. No women are ever mentioned or noticed. IDK. Gillian works there for months and never sees another woman except the Pres' ol' lady. Seriously? Also, the guys go out of their way to tell Gillian that Bear is basically a monk. They've never seen him with a girl. There is never any reason given for this. It's just all very weird. Nothing about this MC was bad ass except maybe the first scene when she approaches the compound for a job.

Finally, the biggest problem isn't the plot holes and uninformed, Pollyanna Motorcycle club members. It's the writing style. The author uses few contractions so every conversation is stilted and weirdly formal even when they are thinking to themselves. I couldn't sink into any of the characters because none of them spoke like real people. No slang, no real dirty talk, no cursing, no ribbing each other. When they finally have sex after living together for months she calls it her vagina when she has the obligatory "it's too big" moment and then she cries from the pain. They call the working girls "prostitutes", etc. It added to the unrealistic overall tone of the book.

So, all in all, I applaud anyone that puts a book out. It takes a lot of guts and determination. But not every book is great, not every author hits it out of the park with their first book but most of them get better over time and I'm sure this author can, too.

Behind the Burns by C.E. Kingsley had me hook, line and damn sinker from the I am so intrigued beginning to the slight introduction to Book 2 cliffy.
Mute and heavily scarred Jillian broke my damn heart. On the run, and trying to escape her dark past Jillian finds herself at the Hell's Reapers garage applying for a job as a mechanic. A job she is most definitely qualified for.
Firstly, I absolutely loved how each of the Hell's Reapers members accepted and took her straight under their protective wings or should I say leather cuts.
Particularly Bear who was instantly drawn to her. Oh man Bear is one heck of a possessive, bossy and extremely protective broody alpha. Although he quickly learns he needs to cool his jets around a skittish Jillian, and oh man when he does cue the swoony and sweet moments.
Now amongst the Hell's Reaper MC and beside Bear will Jillian feel safe and finally begin to heal? Or will he past ghosts come back to haunt her?

What an emotional / occasional breath stealing ride this dark, heartbreaking, twisted, violet and yet heartwarming story this was.
It took me on a journey about survival, strength, trauma, healing and finding solace in love.
I love the vibe of this MC club and each of its intriguing and loveable characters whom I hope a few get their own stories.
The cliffy which I'm guessing will lead in to book 2 kind of surprised me however I'm intrigued and excited to see where it goes.

A highly recommended read. I'm looking forward to more Hell's Reapers.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

Gillian has had a very rough and traumatic life. When she moves to a small town to start over all she wants is to find a job that will help her keep a roof over her head. Enter the Hell’s Reapers, the town’s biker club. Despite Gillian’s walls being a mile high, the club hires her to be their new mechanic and take her in under their protection. Most of the club is fascinated with the mysterious Gillian but no one more so than Bear. Bear’s job at the club is to enforce the rules and keep everyone safe. But can he protect Gillian from her past?

The plot of this book was SO GOOD. Gillian story was well developed throughout and so heartbreaking. I felt for her throughout the entire story and admired her will to survive.

Bear was a very rough character. I wish that we had gotten more back story for him so that his personality could have been better understood. I liked how protective he was with Gillian to a degree; she deserved to be protected and safe after her past, but he sometimes came off as very possessive.

I am only knocking this book stars because I wish it had more details. I wanted Bear and Gillian’s story to take longer to develop. Again, it was a great plot though.

Thank you so much to author C.E. Kingsley for the copy of your book!!!

Trigger Warning: Violence; beating, torture, domestic assault.

Behind the Burns (Hells Reapers MC book 1)

Bear and Gillian have a beautiful relationship even though she was reluctant to let him in. She is a survivor and Bear her protector. This was a excellent novel to start off a series and can’t wait for the next. All the men in the MC are great guys and I’m sure will get their own story. Love it ❤️ and 100% recommend this book to everyone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ give it a read, you won’t be disappointed

Behind the Burns - C.E. Kingsley

3.8/5 Stars! Jillian is on the run from a past she's trying to escape and reminders that hurt to much. Jillian has almost no money in her name when she arrives in the new town, so she applies as a mechanic at the local MC's garage. Jillian has to navigate her new life in a new town, but as a selective mute and scars marring her whole body and heart, she finds it surprising how quickly the Hell's Reapers MC accepts her as one of their own. Bear immediately is drawn to Jillian, and quickly takes over the role of being her protector. With a traumatic past, Bear must learn to control his temper and communicate with a mute Jillian who is easily scared. Will Jillian find the safety and healing she seeks in Bear's arms, or will her past come to haunt her again?

This is a book about healing from trauma, and navigating love when love in the past was nothing short of a monster. Bear is an alpha male to the truest. He's strong, protective, a little bossy, and possessive. He also has a sweet, thoughtful, and caring side. He is constantly caring for all of Jillian's needs. The dialogue didn't flow quite as well as it could have at times, and there was one or two moments I wasn't thrilled with the way Bear acted, but it was still an overall good read. My favorite part is that the MC felt close like family and quickly accepted Jillian into the fold which is a must for me with any MC novel. I want to know not only the main characters, but grow attach to the support characters as well in anticipation of it being a series. The characters are cheeky, fun, and just as protective of Jillian as Bear is.

This book is great for someone who enjoys a possessive alpha male with a sweeter side who insists on caring for his heroine in every aspect.

Has potential

The story started out good, but then it went downhill. The plot was good, and started strong. I found a lot of aspects to be unbelievable, esp the situation with the motel manager. The conversations between characters were very stilted. I enjoyed and finished the book, but it could used some work to make it flow better and to make it more believable.

Beautiful behind Burns❤

This is a new author to me and I love Motorcycles Club romances, this is a story that is painful and beautiful to read. Gillian story is brutal at first with what happen to her, she mute and has scars both mental and on her body that she hides. She is a mechanic which I love and needs a job so the only job in town is the Hells Reapers MC but she proves she can do the job. What her ex did to her she keeps secret, I have to say the brothers at first are like club brothers but over time they become family especially Gears. Bear is Sergeant of arms and just came back from helping his mother and falls for Gillian at first sight but Gillian is afraid at first of him because of ex brutally of her but he will not give up , she is attracted to him too. Over time they fall for each other only to have her ex to kidnap her, the brothers will not stand for that, this book is sweet and very sexy , as well as painful and has a surprisingly ending that makes me want the next book bad! Would recommend this book to.all Motorcycles Club romances readers❤

ILLICIT-DOSE-OF-SCARS-1

Holy fucking shit. This was intense. 🔥

This story had everything. New beginnings. Traumatic past. Abusing ex. Me wanting to annihilate him. Scars and pain. Bikers. Sexy and protective hero. Passion. Chemistry. Dirty talking. Hot fingering and the hero giving good head..

Fuck.

Where do I start with this? Well from the beginning I guess. Ok here we go. Gillian is running from her past. That poor woman was abused and even tortured. My heart hurts for her. 💔 She goes to that new town looking for a fresh start. She finds a job in a garage which belongs to a biker club and slowly tries to heal from what has happened to her.

Bear is one of the main people in that biker club. And Gillian catches his attention immediately. He is very protective towards her even when she's not that friendly with him. He can sense that she's been through a lot and that makes him even more eager to protect her.
She literally pushes him away at every chance she gets but that only makes him even more determined.

This book contains descriptions of abuse. I would actually call it torture. It is hella INTENSE.

The man that actually did this? Bloody hell. I don't know if death was enough for him. That bastard did a lot. I'm not happy with the fact that he didn't receive a piece of his own doings. Or if he received it..it was still not enough. That piece of shit just died. Ugh.. 😒.
Yes I wanted him to be tortured. To have his own skin removed. To have his bones broken. To have his face smashed. To be beaten to death. Filthy bastard. 😒

You'll know what I'm talking about once you read the book.. don't worry.

Let's lighten the mood.

I really liked how the bikers were close to each other almost like a family. When Bear needed help to find Gillian at some point many of them helped. Loved that.

Also.. what's with them and staring? If Gillian walked..they were staring. If she drank water..they were staring. If she was cleaning something..they were staring. What the fuck. 🤣

This review is kinda all over the place but well..this is what happens when I like something very much and then I try to put my thoughts in order. I simply fail.
Anyway. I highly recommend this book! I don't have anything negative to say. Although I want to mention that it ends in a.. cliffhanger. Oooops! 😈

I seem to be on a cheesy romance binge at the moment. The premise was good and some original bits, but the plot did seem to be a little over the place at times. The characters were well written and fun to read. I probably would read this again.

Jillian has been having a tough life for a long time and she finally has a way to scape to another town. With almost no money and no place to live she decides try getting a job in a garage. One run by the Hell’s Reapers, the local MC. Jillian can’t talk and is scarred not only physically, but also mentally. Alongside the Reapers she gets another chance in life, and love, with Bear.

Bear is one of the Reapers who develops an interest in Jillian since he sees her for the first time. He decides to get her to trust him, which is a difficult task, since she has had a really bad experience with an ex.

The thing I liked most: the MCs bonding and the way they brought Jillian to their family.

The one I liked less: how she had some really childish attitudes and the way the guys (mainly Bear) treated her as is she were a little child.

Be warned, the book ends in a cliffhanger.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my review.

This book was amazing! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

But here's why...

This book addresses dealing with past traumas and abuses in a multitude of ways. I love how strong the MC is and her ability to move on despite all that shes gone through.

I'm truly not trying to be mean, but the writing was terrible. The dialogue was cringingly unrealistic, rarely matching up with the characters or any person I've ever heard speak, and everything in-between was written in a list-like manner that was truly difficult to get through (She stood up. She walked to the door. She placed her hand on the doorknob. She opened the door. She stepped through the door. ...you get the idea. It's frustrating yet mind-numbing to read).

Story-wise, it made wild leaps and contradictions, the pacing of the characters' growth/development made little sense, and overall it ended up an utterly forgettable draft of a story. Now, the idea for this book doesn't have to be scrapped, the premise was there as well as a knowledge of the end goal, but the execution was barely that of a first draft. Rushed, illogical, and forced, this book needs more time, editing, and thought before being published. I know with these types of romances there are certain tropes and a requirement to temporarily suspend logic and disbelief, but this was way too much to brush past. The ill-executed plot paired with the truly lacking writing ability made for a story better suited to fan fiction. It can be salvaged of course, but not without putting in some time and work.

OK read

I was conflicted by this book.

The story was really good, but the editing and the way the story flowed was sometimes stilted and made it somewhat difficult to read.

Such a shame for something with do much potential.

The plot of this book is absolutely beautiful. I loved it. Why only 4 stars and not 5, because the heroine acted more like a child would and then the hero also treated her like a child. All her actions was that of a child and although the hero was an absolute wonderful guy he acted as if she was a child. Sorry but that is how it felt for me but like I said the story it self was amazing.

Lots of mistakes

I was going for a five star review, however the more I read, the more mistakes I found. Mixtures of tenses, typos, punctuation errors.
I thought it was a great story but the further I read, the weirder it got. It read like a non native English speaker in some parts using full phrases where a contraction would be better.
In the end, it was an okay read.

Basically the fmc is physically and emotionally scarred because of her abusive ex. She ends up working for as a mechanic at a shop owned/run by an Motorcycle Club. One of the guys becomes obsessed with her. When she eventually decides to give him a chance, he becomes increasingly more aggressive (grabbing her and refusing to let go, yelling in her face, threatening to “punish” for “disrespecting” him in front of his brothers). Every time he becomes aggressive, she has a panic attack, then his “soothing tone and gentle touch” calms her down. And the cycle begins again.

TLDR: the whole book is the fmc escaping from an abusive relationship and ending up in another one (except the author wants us to believe the second relationship is a romance🤮😡🤬)

MAJOR TRIGGER WARNINGS: domestic abuse (emotional and physical); murder (off page)

This book is so frustrating. I wanted to like it. The story is good just so many questions were left unanswered. One question I was asking the entire book was how Jillian survived being burned. He was ex-boyfriend had her locked in her home, so how did she get free and get help. We never got an answer and I was hoping for one the entire time.
And I'm sorry but the Bear and Jillian relationship makes no sense. He wants to show her that not all guys are the same, but here he is being so dang possessive and almost stalkerish. He sets off multiple panic attacks in Jillian but never learns what those triggers are. He never really gets to know her.
I wanted to like this book, I tried to like this book but I just couldn't and I cannot see myself continuing this series even with that cliffhanger that was given.

Smut: 5 out 5 🌶
Story: 5 out of 5 ⭐️
Romance: 5 out of 5 ⭐️

I have to say this book was so good. It had a little bit of everything MC rugged handsome men, a heroine that has gone threw a lot with an abusive ex (Jillian) and as she moves to a new town she is healing from the last time she was with her ex (who’s in jail now) and she finds flyer for a mechanic job and meets MC president who gives her a job where she meets Bear the sergeant in arms. He really gets her to trust him it’s hard and takes time. He shows her what love looks like. Some really sexy scenes and a lot of action with her ex also. Definitely a book you won’t be able to put down.

Trigger warnings: Sexual assault, abuse, mental abuse, sexual content, Mafia related stuff
