Olly Christie and Josh Welles are on an archaeological dig in Egypt, with Olly's father who is searching for the first of the Talismans of the Moon - the Tears of Isis. Olly and Josh are determined to investigate. Not only do they have to avoid the Egyptian tomb booby-traps, they will also have to thwart whoever it is who is trying to sabotage the dig...
This author has published under several versions of his name, including Allan Jones, Frewin Jones, and A.F. Jones. He has also published under the pen names Sam Hutton and Steven Saunders.
My review is based on the entire series not this book in isolation. This series had great potential, interesting main characters, a 6th grade girl and boy, and an exciting adventure story, but Allan Frewin Jones' writing failed to fully develop the characters and create interesting or almost magical environments needed to compete with better known authors of children's action/adventure and fantasy books. The biggest problem was his ending or the lack of it which totally disappoints the reader after four books. Basically he just stopped and never finished the series failing to tie up even half of the on-going issues. It was very unrewarding and I would never recommend it as there are so many better books that will enthrall young readers. I hope that Allen Frewin Jones will continue to develop his writing style as his story line had potential.
'Tremble in dread, thief and interloper:thou art revealed. The Gods that protect these Halls know thy name, Intruder in the resting place of Tathtut III, Great King of Upper and Lower Egypt. Thou hast brought down a curse upon thyself That shall be visited upon thy family Even unto the hundredth generation. Thy first-born son shall die, And so shall all the first-born sons of thy line Until the end of days.'
Enjoyable enough but I won't be searching out the others in the series. 2.5*

These books had so much potential! The whole plot idea was great but the ending was so disappointing! After four books, searching for the four talismans to reveal this great treasure, the story ends before we find out what this treasure is, it’s anti-climactic and not worth the time. If you want a great book series that does not have this issue, with well developed characters and great plot I would read the Secrets Of The Tombs series by Helen Moss, the idea of an archeologist’s child and their friend on digs being pit against adults trying to steal/ruin something is similar but far better executed.
We actually have a collection of the first four and, glancing at the cover and series name, I was expecting eye-rolling sci fi. Instead this was a page-turning adventure that I strongly encouraged my 12 yo to pick up (I'm pretty sure I was screening it for her).
I loved these books as a kid, but as adult I didn't hate it and I didn't find it engaging. I did enjoy the archaeological and history used. From what I remember the next books get better.
This entire series is a great adventure story for kids from about age 10 to... well I'm 42 and I loved it. I read a lot of books for young people because I'm a teacher and I'm always on the look out for stories that I think will grasp the attention of my students and this is definitely one of them! You will follow Olly and Josh as they travel with Olly's dad who is a famous archaeologist to the Valley of the Kings on the hunt for an undiscovered pharaoh's tomb and a priceless talisman. Your kids or students will love it. This is the first in a series of 4 books. I recommend them all!
This is a great book for 4th or 5th graders. Fun theme in the tombs of Egypt, but very much all about the kids being unrealistically in the middle of everything. I would have given it 5 stars if I were 10.
My kids really enjoyed this Indiana Jones meets Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys read aloud. We plan on reading the rest of the books in the series when we reach Ancient China, Ancient India and Ancient South America in our history lessons.
