This was my short read that I decided upon yesterday....none of the covers are what I have as mine was a beautifully illustrated one of Florence holding her lamp alongside some soldiers, a much better cover! Anyway, wonderful story of the foundation she established for my profession after she heeded the calling she knew were from God alone. Nursing has come along, long ways as any of us can imagine! The beginnings for that were pitiful with the filth and lack of basic hygiene, she instituted much needed reforms and truly made a difference with her dedication and purpose. Wonderful story. This would probably be found on Thriftbooks or old second hand stores now (I found mine that wa somewhere years ago) for it was published in 1962, before I was born I might add ;)

Rereading this book as an adult is special given the war in Ukraine, the decline of nursing and medical care generally, and the increasing class divisions that plague the world.

Florence Nightingale was honored by Victoria Regina for her work administering the hospitals during the Crimean War. Into the valley of death rode the 600 said Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Florence Nightingale nursed the 200 survivors of that calamitous charge against the Russians.
