It's Christmas in the winter wonderland town of Deep Haven, and the Christiansen kids are all heading home for the holidays. But no one feels very merry. Grace is worried about her husband's life-changing illness… Eden is facing devastating news… Casper is in over his head (of course!)… Amelia is dodging a walk down the aisle… Owen…well, Owen just nearly died, again… But it's Darek who has news that just might destroy the family legacy. The trip home for all is filled with secrets, memories and old dreams. But when they discover the real reason they've been asked home for the holidays, it will shake their world. It'll take a disaster for them to discover that home is the place for answers, hope and most of all…miracles.
This year, spend Christmas with your favorite small town family.
I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.
I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.
Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.
Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.
I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.
I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. Oh, how I love this family, the Christiansens. Susan May Warren has somehow managed to craft thsi family in her writer's mind and made them seem so real that they worm their way right down into this reader's heart. When I read this book, it's not like I was sitting in my chair reading. No, I was in every scene, felt every emotion---and there are some bone-deep emotions in this one, for sure. In every family member's life. These folks are as real as a literary family can be. This series has been the absolute best in Christian fiction in my opinion! They come to my mind often even when I'm not reading one. And Warren includes some mighty big spiritual truths, too. Her books take you to church, and I mean that.
I grinned and shed tears all the way though this book. I could not stop reading it. I was in bed and had to get back up to finish. I just couldn't make myself leave these wonderful Christiansens. Absolute perfection!
My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.
“Hope takes immense courage. It is for the brave, and for the bold. Because what is hope but faith that we aren’t abandoned?”
This is a Christmas story not to be missed. Whether you are familiar with the Deep Haven Christiansen family or this is your first encounter, you will not be able to put this book down once you start. It has all the feels - heartbreaking fear, immobilizing grief, overwhelming tenderness, unconditonal love - gently mixed with glimmering hope and invitation to lay it all down at the feet of the Merciful One. This wonderful family and all that they have been through and are still battling will have you crying tears of empathy and joy.
I am quite amazed at how the author has pulled together seven subplots - one for each couple in the family - to create a seamless and beautifully touching story that brings the entire family together and makes the reader want to be a part of their family too. Every couple faces difficult obstacle and choice that has potential to change their lives as they know it. How they band together in faith and love is so encouraging and noteworthy.
I received the book via publisher/author and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
If you are a fan of Susan May Warren’s Christiansen Family series, I highly recommend this story! It is a great chance to catch up with every single member of the family (and their significant others and children). If you haven’t read the series, please do that first, before reading this. Otherwise, you might find yourself in character overload, among other things.
The Christiansen family deals with a lot as Christmas approaches. These things range from health problems to job decisions to some relationship strife. The author did a good job of showing the need for communication and how important a supportive family is. I also appreciated the way she wove the faith thread into the story. By pointing to the truth that God not only sent us a savior, but that God walks with us through everything, the author was able to point the characters back to the right focus and help them in overwhelming situations.
Even though there were tough issues, this was a beautifully uplifting book, full of hope. It captured the connection between family members that I loved in the series. I highly recommend it. I am so glad that my husband purchased this book as a Christmas present for me.
The perfect return to one of my favorite families and fictional towns. This book couldn’t have been more satisfying. Talk about a Susan May Warren character reunion! Read late into the night because I had to know what happened with everyone.
I love the way Susan brings these characters to life, takes you along for each person's journey and drops you right into the scene. How does she manage to write from so many perspectives here and manage to draw us into each person's mind so thoroughly, all while maintaining consistency for these characters from the original series? This book is brimming with real life situations, messy emotions, imperfect and yet still lovable characters and robust spiritual truths. I couldn't have rooted harder for everyone if I tried.
If you loved all of the Christiansen stories, this book is one you don't want to miss! It was a homecoming on a grand scale, and who can beat doing it at Christmas? Getting to catch up with all of these characters was wonderful.
Now, I will start off by saying I cried several times throughout the story. Yes, I cried. I didn't realize how much I loved these characters until the emotions came pouring out of me. Listen, once you get to know this family and the extended family, you can't help but be invested with your emotions.
The author smoothly covers all of the family and includes them seamlessly throughout the story. Each transition happens in a way that doesn't seem contrived or forced. And let me tell you, with SO many families involved it has to be tricky.
There were definitely some surprises, which I obviously can't reveal here. I loved that characters from Global Search and Rescue showed up again. When you have an author like Susan May Warren who can bring in some of our other favorite characters, you can't go wrong!
I'm not ready to be done with the Christiansen family. They are absolutely beloved by us readers. And yes, they do truly encapsulate life and family in Minnesota. If you're wondering what it's like, this is a perfect look. I feel like I could be an honorary Christiansen. Just like someone else who shows up in the book!
I adored the faith thread included in the story. The way the author used Mary & Joseph's story to impact each of the couples and them as individuals was incredibly powerful!
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
Ugh, so good. The whole Christiansen family back together for Christmas, everyone dealing with their own issues, but per usual Warren weaves it all together seamlessly, all while reminding us that Jesus is with us always. Emmanuel. Thoroughly enjoyed this and this family continues to be one of my favorite fictional families :).
"Hope is the one thing that we have to give when the world is at its darkest."
Author Susan May Warren has created a truly wonderful Christmas gift for her longtime readers! Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas brings back the entire Christiansen family in a heartwarming return to Deep Haven. So many emotions throughout this story...from sadness to pure joy as the Christiansen family realizes all of their "ordinary moments that add up to an extraordinary life." This novella is such a beautiful tale of God's love for us and the perfect book for this holiday season.
At the end of the novella, the preview for Susan May Warren's upcoming January 2022 release Sunrise, book one in the Sky King Ranch series, has me so excited for what she has in store for readers next...
"Wake up ladies, the Kingston brothers are back in town."
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Confession: I actually went back and re-read all 7 of the prior Christiansen books to get the most out of this book. I'm glad I did! It was fun to see what all the couples of the Christiansen Family series are up to after several years have gone by. The babies are kids now, of course, and while most of the family has continued on with their happily ever after trajectories, one surprising revelation is that Amelia isn’t married yet. Change is in the air for some, and as always, you find yourself shouting on the inside, “Just COMMUNICATE!” Really enjoyed this book.
There’s nothing like a good homecoming story especially when it’s with one of your favorite families. The original Christiansen series is one of my all-time favorites, so you can bet I’ll be reading anything that mentions a Christiansen. What I like most about these stories is how the family rallies around each other, even when one of them is doing something completely stupid. In this Christmas story, all the children have returned to Deep Haven, each with their own secret. Watching them as they try not to reveal their secrets will cause a chuckle or two. Not everything is perfect with the family, but their love stays true. There were several heart tugging moments, which only reminded me of how much I love this make-believe family. Max is still my favorite character in the whole series, and his story still wrecks me. His story reminds me of what Christmas is all about – hope. No matter what happens because of Christmas, the best is yet to come.
Return to Deep Haven and catch up with the Christiansens this Christmas. You can’t go wrong with a Deep Haven book, and Susan May Warren penned the perfect update novel in Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas! Visit with your favorite fictional family while you get in the holiday spirit – this book will have you looking forward to Christmas cookies and fireside chats with your relatives all while journeying into new territory with the Christiansen kids.
Those kids may be adults, most of whom have their own families now, but that doesn’t make them exempt from mistakes – or from needing advice from their parents. I love the way that Warren has extended each of the previous novels’ plots into this new book, intertwining them with each other to create a new story. This highlights her creative talent but also her willingness to up the stakes because she really puts the Christiansens in some tough situations in this one!
That part was a bit hard for me in the beginning. I love these characters, and while some of them have previously come to terms with their personal struggles, they didn’t go away – and they came back with a vengeance in this story. That tough-read aspect was only increased by the fact that all of the Christiansens were having issues at the very same time! The light soon started to shine, though, and while I couldn’t always guess correctly about what was coming, I trusted Warren to give us some sort of happy ending – and she did that in spades.
That is part of the lesson of this story, though: are we willing to trust God with our struggles and our hard times? Will we hang in there when the going is the worst and when the road before us is ugly? Coming on the heels of the pandemic we’ve all been living through, this is a timely and much-needed lesson – and Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas is a fun way to explore that theme.
This is the perfect book to get yourself in the Christmas spirit – grab your copy today!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
Snow. Christmas. Family. Dilemma. Faith. Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas by Susan May Warren has all the family feels for a wonderful Christmas novella. The Christiansen’s journey through their previous seven novels were one of my favorite Warren families. Obviously, Warren loves them too since she included them in a story again. This time around Christmas. I love seeing all the family members again. I love seeing them interact with one another. I love the elements of the Christmas traditions that Warren wove into the storyline. When authors craft realistic characters and have them face realistic dilemmas, I love seeing how they actually change and grow from these circumstances. The plot was woven so well. Each individual couple has doubts and fears that creep to the front of the story line, but I love how they work through them and rely on God for the answers. Even though I read this story as an e-book copy the first time around, I will purchase it as a physical edition to add to my bookshelf. If you enjoy Christmas movies, Warren’s stories, or realistic family situations, then this is the story for you to pick up and read. Maybe even every Christmas.
I received a complimentary copy of Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas by Susan May Warren from Sunrise Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
It was fun to see old friends again, but I felt this missed the mark as far as Christmas books go. When all six siblings are going through crises at the same time and continuing their "we'd rather make poor assumptions than communicate with our partners" crap, it makes for a book more stressful than renewing. I had serious problems with the Amelia storyline and how some of her siblings seemed to affirm her. She should be in counseling; something's not right here. There were bright parts and good faith messages, but there was just too much going on in this book, and while I don't swing to the other extreme of just wanting to read fluff at Christmastime, this was too heavy on the pain and anger and uncommunication to feel uplifting.
The fictional community of Deep Haven + the Christiansen family reuniting for Christmas = a delightful read from one of my most favorite authors. This is a heartfelt, poignant story that I couldn't put down, yet I wanted to read slowly and savor the experience. It was so fun to see characters from previous novels back "home" in Deep Haven. The plot is tight, pacing is excellent and the reminder of God's faithfulness through all the seasons of our lives is especially meaningful right now. Highly recommend!
Another Christmas with the Deep Haven Christiansens. This book has a lot going on for how short the story is. I enjoyed spending time with these old familiar characters. I especially appreciated the fact that Susan May Warren was willing to give us another story about this lovely family, and allow her readers to spend a bit more time with them. As I read, I found the story to be beautiful yet bittersweet. Each couple had some loose ends that needed to be tied up, and for the most part, that was accomplished. It did make me sad, though, because I'm quite certain each couple could have had another entire book written about their story. But...saying all of this, this is a delightful wrap-up of the family. And it's a Christmasy story, so what more could we ask for?! If you are a Deep Haven fan, you MUST read this book! The perfect Christmas novel of my favorite bookish family!
And a perfect reminder that life doesn't end after happily ever after...and happily ever after doesn't mean that everything is easy or perfect, in fact, it's usually far from it.
All six of the Christiansens and their spouses and kids are home in Deep Haven for Christmas. And all of them have a personal struggle going on in their lives.
It is NOT easy to juggle so many characters in one novel, especially when all six of them are married; you instantly double your number of main characters. But Susan May Warren did it flawlessly! She juggled all of their stories and ordered them just so, drawing me in until I could not put the book down!
A must read for any Deep Haven fan! If you've never read the Christiansen series, though, I highly recommend starting there before picking up this novel!
I LOVE the Christiansen family series! I was so excited to read a Christmas story with all of them in it. I only gave it 3 stars because a lot of the topics were heavy and depressing, not my ideal Christmas story. A couple of things got on my nerves. First of all, its pretty ridiculous to have Amelia and Roark still engaged, and waiting, after 7 years. That’s pretty unbelievable. I think it would have been better to say that they had eloped in a foreign country years ago, and were supposed to be planning a big wedding back home, but Amelia was dragging her feet for all the same reasons given. Next, Darek just decided at the end to move. He never changed his mind about loving the resort, Deep Haven, etc. He had worried about the move not being the best thing for the family, and that was never addressed. He just changed his mind. I did love that Owen and Scotty are taking over though. Lastly, Max, poor Max. Grace and Max’s book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I know he doesn’t get a happy ending but I really didn’t want to see his decline start in this story. I prefer to think he lived on long and happily with Grace and Yulia. I did like that he ended up getting in the trial, so the conclusion wasn’t as depressing. I also loved Romeo, the bonus Christiansen, showing up at the end!

I am really struggling with leaving a review for this one. The beginning was pretty depressing and heavy. Of course it's HEA as all the books in the series are but I almost put it down at the beginning. At times, I did find myself engrossed in the book, but the writing was a little repetitive.
The entire series is a Christian series but there are elements in this book that I feel should not be in a Christian book. But if I read this through a secular/clean read lens, then it was okay. Yes, we heard about the Christmas story over and over which then I ask, why do I need to read one of the characters unsnapping his jeans as he's getting ready to join his wife the tub (after they've been talking while she was in the tub). Too many sexual references for a Christian novel.
It was a little predictable and superficial. It felt like the book really revolved around two main stories and the others weren't given equal time. I think part of the problem was that there was just too much going on for such a short book. It was a little chaotic.
Overall, it was an okay read. But because it's supposed to be a Christian read, and it crossed some lines for a Christian book, I gave it two stars. It would have been three and half if it wasn't for that.
"We look ahead and we see thin air. Or maybe massive waves. And we're asked to get out of the boat and walk on water, and that sounds preposterous." "You're going to tell me to keep my eyes on Jesus, right?" "Actually, I'm going to remind you that when you're sinking, Jesus will not let you drown. He will catch you. He will hold you, even when the world is coming apart around you."
I greatly enjoyed the Christiansen series. This Christmas reunion brought back all of the characters. Normally the full-length novels all have individual characters experiencing a bit of drama. In the book with all of them descending on Deep Haven, that drama is elevated.
At times, this book was a bit intense - much like family holiday gatherings can be. Add the snowy and icy weather of Minnesota, and there is bound to be a disaster or two. But like one has come to expect, while they may not always agree the Christiansens are there for each other. No matter what. I do hope the author has another reunion book in the future!
What else I enjoyed about this book is the faith elements. Life lessons are merged into living. None of the characters are perfect, but the redemption factor is evident. I appreciate how the author has a way of weaving truth into her books!
I read this story yesterday and the events are still going on in my mind. I need to remind myself this is fiction not real. The Eden/Jace couple reminded me of (Ashley and Landon Blake in the Baxter series by Karen Kingsbury this drama) Dr Aria Silver enters the lives of Deep Haven as answered prayer. Romeo even gets a sms to come home to the resort to help out. All the other couples have there chapter of drama going on (which in the real world rings true). Susie asks of us a favourite couple in her Christiansen books and mine would be John and Ingrid, also Sunny who has her own kind of hello. (seen the pictures of Susie's two companions that make her life interesting!!) For health reasons they are having a change of weather and location which impacts community and family. They aren't the only ones moving locations. I'm left wondering if Rhett is he or she (typo errors??) Christmas ...love ...hate... but Jesus Emmanuel God with Us best story of all. As for Rel Mollett the Australian her life seems to got busy helping authors out. I guess technology shrinks the miles. Ready for the new series in 2022 and catching Larke again.
I was so excited to reunite with the Christiansen family and find out how life was treating them! That being said, this book is one I would definitely suggest reading after you read the other Christianen family books. This book has the family returning to Evergreen Resort for Christmas and everyone has something going on in their life that is going to affect the others. But no one wants to share because, well, its Christmas and who wants to ruin Christmas? But God works things out, as He always does, to ensure that this family remembers what a family is for. And that God is in control, not them. I absolutely enjoyed diving back into this family and hearing about how their lives were going. It was like a reunion to “see” them all again. And now, I want a Christmas at Evergreen Resort! Definitely a book I will suggest to friends. An easy read, didn't take long at all to finish and one that teaches some wonderful truths about God. Truths that are easy to see how they can apply to my life as well.
Do yourself a favor and spend a few hours in Deep Haven with the Christiansen family. This is not the traditional fairy tale where, unlike reality, characters live happily ever after. Each member is or returns home with fears, struggles, and baggage. Sounds like typical family holidays, right?
Susan May Warren plumbs the depths of illness, family estrangement, long-term consequences, family ties and joy. You will not look hard for profound nuggets of wisdom applicable to many life circumstances. Through it all, there are events to celebrate and hope for the future.
Favorite characters from previous Christiansen and Deep Haven books appear to delight fans and give more to the story. There are plenty of hold-your-breath moments as well as applause-worthy sections. What a delight to return to the town and family that began my love of Susan May Warren books.
I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.
I have read all of the Christiansen character books so I was so excited when I found out about this Christmas book! WOW! It was amazing and I could not stop reading it!
Of course it was not just a perfect holiday happily ever after story, because sometimes that’s not what life is like. However, even with the trials this family and individuals faced; they did it together and with the help of their faith in God.
I absolutely love the Christiansen parents and their strong faith and devotion to God and their family. I am so emotionally tied to this family and their individual stories so I really enjoyed reading this holiday story!
I truly can’t say enough good things about this series and this specific book. I have read many, if not all, books from this author and highly recommend anything from her! I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
This is a wonderful, fulfilling, Christmas story! I loved the way the whole family is weaved together in this Christmas adventure. It took me weeks to read this book, not because it was too long or that I wasn’t compelled to keep turning the pages, but because I started to read it the week before Christmas. I have 6 daughters and there families. The Grandchildren’s School and Church events and, well I could write a book here. But I want you to know this book is so wonderful.. you will truly enjoy it. I did. Here’s a paragraph to consider.. But, into our mess, God inserted himself, through the person of Jesus, to walk among us. So we could see the heart of God. So mankind could draw near to him as never before. So we would be saved from our sins. So we could live, and not die, forever.
I started "Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas" a year ago, but the way it started depressed me so much, I had to stop. But this year, I pushed through the hard part and got to some great stuff. How one family could have so many people with major life issues at the same time, is beyond me, but the Christenson family had just that. "Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas" focuses, obviously, on the Christiansen family who live in Deep Haven, MN - a fictional town based on Grand Marais along the North Shore. With everything happening at once, the family is all home for Christmas, though they don't all know each other's issues. The story offers a lot of hope, a glimpse of how a family can encourage each other, and a view of a family with a deep trust in God. If you can get through the hard part, I think you'll enjoy the book.
Have Yourself A Christiansen Christmas by Susan May Warren It was absolutely wonderful to catch up with the Christiansen family. It was like having Christmas with your best friends. This story has a great reminder that God’s got this and that you’re not alone. It also reminds us how important communication is especially with your spouse. The love that this family has for each other warms my heart. You have spouses willing to give up everything for the other to follow their dream. You see family coming together to help each other out as well as work through things. I cried happy tears at the end of the book. Susan May Warren does not disappoint. I highly recommend this book. I would suggest reading the other Christiansen family books first.
Well, she’s done it again. I think I made it a third of the way into the story before the tears started rolling.
Susan May Warren creates fictional people who take up permanent residence in your imagination and nestle into your heart. But Deep Haven and the Christiansens…they’re special.
Everyone home for Christmas? Is it possible with six grown children, with lives of their own and crises galore? It’s going to take a true Christmas miracle, and it might get messy along the way.
The Christiansens are my all time favorite fictional family, and I love me some time in Deep Haven! Considering the emotional roller coaster I just rode, I’m very glad I didn’t read the book until now!
I've read all the previous books in the series and loved them. I was looking forward to this book so much I made myself wait extra time till I read it because I didn't want it to be over. This book was good but it disappointed me a little...it seemed too rushed and at times certain events seemed just a little too convenient. I enjoyed catching up with the characters but it wasn't nearly enough. The ending made me sad more than anything because I know it's the last one for this family. (Unless there's something I don't know yet? ...) Even though I read the series a few months ago, it makes me want to read it again to lose that bittersweet feeling. Not trying to be dramatic but this series is the kind that really grabs the heart and won't let go.
Susan May Warren brings us back to Deep Haven (I will never get enough of this small Minnesota town) and all the Christiansen’s are back together for Christmas. Each of the six siblings is struggling with one family crisis or another and I got sucked right in to all the problems (and eventual solutions). This is not a stand alone book and I think will only be enjoyable if you’ve read each of the siblings stories in their individual books. But it was a fantastic look into their lives years after the series ended.
Wow! This is just like a family reunion for the holidays! The Christiansen family is so much fun to be with, and so real. I'm so glad Susan May Warren decided to continue their story and let us have another peek into their lives again. I sat down and read this in one sitting it was so enjoyable. I love reading about how God can work in any situation--sometimes no matter how many times we deal with that situation!!
