Wake the Dead

Rate this book
The dead wait for Caelan.

The Goddess of Life has sent Caelan to wake her brother, the Dead God.

But crossing the reclusive country of Zastrad is even more treacherous when Caelan and his friends aren’t sure they can trust their guide.

The brotherhood of friends will be tested by violence, death, political intrigue, and secrets better left in the dark.

When Caelan finally reaches the fractured godstone, he may have to give up everything to save the family he’s cobbled together of the years.

Wake the Dead is the third book in the six-book Godstone Saga fantasy series and is not a standalone. The story contains danger, secrets, bossy gods, stolen kisses, new king finding his way, a possessive boyfriend, magic, and lots of delicious angst.

Oh my lordy that was epic!

I had a vague idea where one of the plot threads might have been heading and I was proved sort of half right/half wrong but OMG the revelation itself was utterly worth it anyway.

This is the third book in Jocelynn's fantasy saga and each one has brought its own complicated narrative which, all added together, form the series long running story arc which is building up and up in both tension and high stakes.

Here Caelan and his best friends are heading into deadly territory - literally - as they head for the capital of Zastrad through a country which worships a Dead God and has no punishment for murder - providing the dead are honoured after they've been killed!

Throughout this book - which I stayed up until 3.30am to read 😁 - the pacing gets tighter, the tension grows higher and the God and Goddess inside Cael's head become ever more manipulative.

There were still surprises throughout the book as well, even though the names of each instalment in the series give away a bit of what might be happening next, but in spite of that, I still had a ginormous grin on my face at the end of Wake of Dead.

Now it really needs to be February already for the visit to the dragon isle!

There was a bit of a pacing issue I think with the fight scene at the end and also I hope they save Lu🥺.

I'm not going to waste my time raving about that shocking as hell ending and just go ahead jump right into the next book bye.

Eno and Rayne have a bit of a rough start at the beginning. Trying to keep their king safe while being in a relationship is not the easiest.
Caelen and Drayce’s relationship is still oh so slowly moving along.
Assassins are still doing their best to get to Caelen.
The four of them enter into another city to get the power of another stone.
They receive the help from one of Shey's people.
Not everything is as it seems.
Betrayal occurs.
A HUGE secret is revealed.
Another solid addition to the series.

Still trying to get collect my thoughts about Wake the Dead but regardless of the book I need to say how much I enjoy the cover of all the books of this series. Cover don't allways get the attention they deserve and these deserve every attention. In fact it was one of the main aspect that even started reading the books.

(some spoiler)

The romance between Cael and Drayce is still going slow, but finally we found out about Drayce's true identity. I was thinking that he was a son of one of the gods, but in the end he was a dragon. That surprised me. I just hope that at the end of this series, Cael and his best friend/lover will have a real happy ending, with them having the same life span, bcs I'm pretty sure that dragons can live way more than humans, and until now Cael is still human...but he could become one of the gods? Idk why, but I have this feeling. Eno and Rayne are still the main couple(speaking about romance) and I like them together. The story is interesting and doesn't feel dragged. On to the next!

Wow, wow, wow. This book packed quite a punch. I loved the first two but this one is even more intense.

There are some revelations which are very important, some decisions made which may have a bigger impact than expected (one in particular disturbed me a bit but we will see how that develops) and some actions which are unexpected and maybe even cruel.

Our friends go through hell in this story and it promises to get only worse.
All of them get more complicated or maybe we just learn how far they are willing to go to save each other and Thia ... and that realisation is sometimes not as easy to swallow as one would expect.

The world-building is superb and gets with each book more interesting. And the story was fantastic .... and now I really REALLY want to have the next book. February 25th please hurry up .... I need "Wings of Fire" now!!!!

I was lucky to get an ARC for this book and I am happy to give my honest opinion.

I had a lot of highlights for special moments between Rayne and Eno and I enjoyed all the characters relationship and friendship with each other. The book took me awhile to finish because it seemed like forever to finally find this dead or supposedly dead God. Yes, some backstabbing and abducting went on and Caelan had some serious powers because of the Gods but the whole book seemed to drag for me. I plan to continue this series but taking a little break first. The ending of this book though..... OMG OMG OMG it does make you want to grab the next book ASAP ;-) lol

The good
+ So much action!
+ Everything our four guys have to endure, forcing especially Caelan and Drayce to grow up too soon
+ The way everyone supports everyone's flaws
+ How Rayne, Eno and Drayce want to protect Caelan as a person and a friend, not just as a king
+ The depth of their relationships (both romantic and platonic)
+ How nobody judged Caelan for losing control of his powers, instead just supporting him through the aftermath
+ How much of a fucking goner Eno is over Rayne
+ How the gods are very obviously not good guys, but Caelan is still forced to deal with them because there is no other way to save Thia
+ The High Luminance. They were awesome
+ Rayne taking his role as the king's advisor very, very seriously. I hope Eno can be there to support him through everything
+
+
+ All of them trying to rationalize and accept the strange theology in Zastrad instead of judging harshly
+ How they all support each other's romantic relationships
+ How Drayce and Caelan call Rayne and Eno Mom and Dad
+
+ In general, just the depth of everything in this book. No decision is made lightly, every decision has harsh consequences and you can see how the mental strain is slowly getting to them. This book was definitely the darkest of the series so far
+ The cliffhanger!

The neutral
o

The bad
- Drayce is a fucking blabbermouth and should learn when to keep his king's secrets

I loved how heavy the book was, but the tight relationships between the main characters still kept things light enough to make the book dark and deep without getting too much. This book is definitely my favorite so far and I can't wait for the next one!

I just can't get enough of this series! Yet again, I devoured every word in one sitting... my kindle was glued to my hand all day and I was hooked from start to finish. There is so much going on in terms of action, developing relationships, intrigue, mystery - you name it, this book has it! Set in Zastrad, this book pushes Cael, Drayce, Rayne and Eno out of their comfort zones and leaves them questioning everything around them. It was an unpredictable read and whenever there was a moment that I thought I could predict, I was so wrong each and every time.

As well as the action throughout the book, we discovered a lot more about the different characters too. They balance each other so well as a team; Caelan frustrated me at times with the contradictions in his ideas and actions but the other 3 clearly balance this out. Drayce has some big reveals in this book (no spoilers) but for me, it was Rayne who stole the show. Chapter 22 from Rayne's point of view was absolutely gripping and blew my mind. It showed his unflappable loyalty and dedication to Caelan and, for me, made me wonder about what more is in store in future books.

Overall, I loved this book! It is another brilliant continuation in the Godstone Saga and the worst part of finishing it will always be the wait before the next one is released. I need book 4 now!! It is extremely well written, the characters are great, the world-building is second to none and the plot is cleverly crafted to keep you hooked from start to finish. If I could give this book 6 stars then I would! I definitely recommend this series to others but make sure to start with books 1 and 2 before jumping into book 3.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Wow the Godstone Saga just keeps getting better and better !!!!!!

Wake the dead, certainly kept me awake what an epic headrush.
This series improves with each book released. It really must be read in order to appreciate the continuing saga.

Its an enchanting action packed tale from start to finish.
We meet up with the quartet at the start of their epic journey towards crossing to Zastrad to wake Nyx the Dead God, in which they face yet another harrowing adventure filled with mystery, intrigue, danger and betrayal. The adventure is again hazardous on the guys, whom feel like they are forever travelling at the whim of the gods not knowing if they are dealing with friends or foe.
Wake the Dead, let's us peel back yet another layer of the complex personalities the guys have.
Secrects are revealed with personalities that when exposed quite frankly leave us open mouthed in shock, from the guys, its utterly fabulous.
Its a rollercoaster of a thrill just to try and sit still reading it, its exciting, its happy, its sad. Its every emotion imaginable, its magnificent.
The imagination and skill in translation this series for our pleasure from the author is outstanding, the word building and storyline as always brilliant. The characters already our friends, become even more dear to us. The ending ........wow ............. roll on February

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Wake the Dead is the third in the Godstone Saga and these must be read in order. With Wake the Dead, we find Caelan dealing with not one, but two gods jockeying for space inside of him while being forced to confront a third. It’s a hard road for a man who has barely had time to grieve the passing of his mother and dealing with his sudden rise to King and it’s a path that seems destined to become ever more difficult.

As with the rest of the series, the driving forces behind Wake the Dead are the four central characters of Rayne, Eno, Caelan, and Drayce. Each have become integral to the overall story and to my enjoyment of it. Even Drayce, who has long been my least favorite of the quartet, has become something of an old friend. There wasn’t a ton of character development this time around, but instead we see a solidifying of both friendships and romances. There are incidents involving both Rayne and Drayce that are both unexpected and set up interesting possibilities for the future.

Wow!!! I’m really impressed with how Jocelynn can create this amazing world, I can get enough of this serie! Can Caelan survive waking another god, specially the dead god? This book continues with Caelan, Rayne, Eno, and Drayce and their journey to wake up the Dead God and they know so little of the country of Zastrad, how they con trust?…. Jocelyn you are killing me here!!! This book have so may twists and poor Caelan is suffering more betrayals, he is overwhelmed with this gods raiding his head. I loved Eno and Rayne!!! They are so good together and his loyalty to Caelan is amazing! Also Caelan and Drayce are still taking things slow and exploring their feelings. And OMG!!! Jocelynn! sneaky little evil you!!! I never see that coming, I can hear you laugh out loud when I was reading certain part of the book!!!
I’m so looking forward to the next book!!! February come to me fast!!! This series is so amazing and exciting, you really have to read it!!

How is Caelan going to survive trying to wake the dead god? And who can Rayne, Eno, and Drayce trust in a hostile country? Oh my gosh Jocelyn you are killing me here! The twists abound in this one as the King and his best friends/advisors try to find the next godstone. Eno and Rayne are #couplegoals as they try to figure out how to pledge to both their king and each other. And Caelan and Drayce are still exploring their feelings although….I am going to need some time to recover from this one! No spoilers but I am wondering how they are going to come through this one as they get ready to travel to the next destination. This series is so good and this world is fully realized. I am so blown away.

This is 2nd installment in Godstone saga series. This series is about journey of a young king and his team who are sent on a quest by the Storm God in pursuit of truth.
.
I am still undecided if continuing with this series was a good idea.
After book 1, you are already comfortable with the character's psyche and set the bar for expectations accordingly.
There were still moments when I was frustrated with Drayce and his nonexistent mouth filter.
We get to see more Cealan and his struggles with his reality and his mother's death.
Overall, it was an average book. Nothing much.
.
And yes I have decided to continue with the 3rd book coz I see potential in the overall plot. Let's see if we get to experience it.

The reality of Caelan's quest has never felt as weighty as it did in this story. Whether it was Zastrad's harsh environment or the growing sense of uncertainty surrounding the intent of the gods and goddesses, this book took on a different tone compared to this series' innocent beginnings. I'm starting to doubt that Tula and Kaes have Caelan's best interests in mind, and seeing the terrifying results of Caelan losing control over their powers only made me more cautious to see him bond with the rest of the godstones. This is the first time Caelan and crew have seen Safa's powers displayed in the open, and it was downright chilling to see what the Goddess of the Hunt is capable of.

In Zastrad, all four men's morals were tested, and while their loyalty towards one another never wavered, I was saddened by the choices they had to make in the pursuit of their destination. Ever-changing politics, allies who weren't what they seemed, and more heartbreaking betrayals made Caelan, Drayce, Eno, and Rayne's journey never feel safe. Rayne in particular showed that he was much more than a shrewd advisor and in fact could be just as deadly when it came to protecting his loved ones. Despite my growing apprehension about the outcome of their time in Zastrad, I was utterly captivated the whole time I was reading. Sometimes the sinking feeling in my stomach was later revealed to be a duplicitous character all along, and other times I was totally blindsided by the reveals along the way.  I'm trying my hardest to keep this review spoiler-free, but can I just say that Drayce's reveal in this book was nothing I EVER expected in my wildest dreams.... and I'm already desperate to read all about what happens now that his truth has been exposed to the world. Add to that the unsettling bargain Caelan had to make with Nyx, and the next book is shaping up to be another whirlwind of adventure!

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Absolutely Outstanding Fantasy Reading! A. Must

Well that was wonderfully unexpected!

So many twists and wild turns in this installment to keep my brain in a whirl until the fourth book is released in January. So many I honestly did not see coming, and I’m a very suspicious person.

Love when that happens.

Wake the Dead is such a huge book in a variety of ways, not just because of the wild revelations at the end. As much as I found those thrilling and wildly entertaining…

No, it’s the layers peeled back off from familiar characters, revealing hidden depths to their personalities and letting us see them both as people capable of acts of great ruthlessness and cruelty. Or as people too easily swayed by surface actions when I expected them to be more discerning. Hidden depths, differences in agendas, and potential for even more revelations to come the more we get to know these men.

These are the quiet turns in the narrative that balances the larger, more explosive surprises the author lays out for all (characters and readers alike) throughout the amazing journey here.

I have come to look forward to all the characters I meet along the paths our quartet must take to achieve their god quests. This book is full of fully realized, memorable beings that come across as absolutely believable, sometimes poignant, often larger than life itself. Ones I hope to see somehow at the end of the series if at all possible.

Drake is creating such a fantastic fantasy series, a gift really. One that pulls at your heart, mind, and imagination.

Now to wait until January 22,2022 for the fourth in the series. She has six planned overall.

We are halfway there on our journey. It’s a magnificent one.

If you’re a lover of fantasy romance and fiction, grab up and read the books along with me. Read them in the order they are written to understand the sequence of events and characters growth and changes in relationships.

I’m highly recommending them all.

My mind is blown...so much suspense, twist and turns, and action. Every page had me seating at edge of my seat, each discovery making me want more and learning more about all of the characters. The hidden depth in their personalities coming out slowly and making them even more intriguing. Caelen, Drayce, Rayne, and Eno quest to save their world tests their bond of friendship and trust, has the gods being jerks (making me question their true motives), and facing unknown/known dangers at every turn. The world building continues to be great, with each country and their traditions being unique (not repetitive or boring). And Drayce....all I can say is WOW. I wish I can say more but I don't want to give any spoilers. And this book is full of surprises, hooking it's claws more deeply into you. I am so addicted to this series.
This series must be read in order and each book is very worth reading.

We're at the halfway point of the Godstone Saga now, and it just keeps hitting every fantasy series note I want it to. There's epic adventuring (our quartet must get Cael to the Zastrad godstone to wake the Dead God, Nyx, which in no way sounds ominous, of course!), political shenanigans (the four men must navigate not only the 'official' pathway to reaching the location of the godstone, through diplomatic relations, but also the less 'legal', much more dangerous ones) and developing relationships with the bonds between the four men/two couples getting stronger.

Of course, the way through Zastrad was never going to be smooth sailing and Cael, Drayce, Eno and Rayne have to put their wits, their bravery and their skills to the test to make sure their mission stands a chance of success. I love the world-building in this series and I think the Zastrad landscape and the beliefs of its people are both disturbing and so well-written. Then there are a few surprises, too...there's a warning here for a huge OMG moment right at the end!!

It seems there's no let up in the Godstone Saga (definitely must be read in order) and Wake The Dead is a brilliant installment in the tale. February can't come soon enough - I need book four immediately! 5*

Holy amaze balls this book is freaking awesome. We left off with Cael needing to wake the dead god Nix. They set off to Zastrad to do just that. Meanwhile both couples start navigating through being in a relationship. It was great watching them wade through issues while dealing with the issues that are thrown at them in Zastrad. That country is crazy and the mentality is not something we can relate to. This book shows us glimpses of what may come and the dangers that lay in wait for our four guys. I will tell you that this book ends on an enormous secret being exposed. I was literally shocked by it and cannot wait for “what’s next”.

Wow!! our guys have a lot coming at them in this addition to their Saga! I love how unpredictable this world and the characters themselves are! This one is intense and brings us some interesting turning points in the story! Caelan has a tough road ahead! I love that these characters do not always do what you would expect and even though they are dedicated and loyal they still make some questionable decisions!! I am still loving all things Rayne and we get a secret from Drayce's corner! I received an ARC of this book and that is all I am telling you! OMG. What an epic story. This is the third book in the series regarding the adventures of the new king, his bodyguard, his advisor and his best friend. This one leads the travellers to Zastrad where the Godstone for the god of death, Nyx. There are betrayals along the way and lots of action. The romance between Cael and Drayce is pushing forward while Rayne and Eno are getting closer. I was surprised with what Rayne did (no spoilers) and the last page with what happened with Drayce was epic. Unfortunately will have to wait until the end of February to read their adventures to Fire Island.

The third book in this series and hands down my favorite so far. Caelan, Drayce, Rayne, and Eno, continue on their dangerous path to figure out how to stop a deadly goddess. Caelan already has two gods in his mind and is not sure he wants a third, but attempting to wake the dead god is the next step in their adventure. Along the way they meet new people, who make their journey perilous, while the relationships between Eno and Rayne and Drayce and Cael grow stronger. I could not put this book down as things got more intense with many plot twists that lead to a shocking reveal.

Another great add to the series. I'm loving this unique universe; each book adds another layer and I don't know what's going to happen next. Love Eno and Rayne together; great chemistry and best friends that Caelan could have. Caelan and Drayce are still connecting to each other and how their story is unfolding has me not putting this down. Can't wait for the next.
