Grace Kelly—whose cool, blond beauty defined the aloof sexiness of the classic Hitchcock heroine—left a lasting impression on Hollywood and the world. Although her career was brief, she lit up the screen in films like High Society , Rear Window , and The Country Girl , for which she won an Oscar. She was not only a fine actress, great beauty, and icon of American style, but she was also a passionate philanthropist, known for her generosity and kindness. Published on the 25th anniversary of her death, Grace A Life in Pictures is the definitive photographic portrait—160 images capturing the early years, film career, royal marriage, and private life of this remarkable woman.
I gave this a "five" not for the prose but for the beautiful pictures. There are far better biographies of Grace, chief among them "Grace" by Robert Lacey and "Grace of Monaco: an Interpretive Biography" by Steven Englund.
This lovely coffee table has many lovely pictures of Princess Grace, along the same lines as Howell Conant's similar book "Grace." I really love and admire Princess Grace and have three coffee table books on her. Her life story is endlessly fascinating. I have seen all eleven of her movies and even a ballet documentary with which she was involved, "Children of Theatre Street," which was directed by her friend Robert Dornhelm and came very close to winning the documentary Oscar.
- Kelly was born in an affluent Philadelphia family during the Great Depression that was "deprived of nothing". Her love towards art was apparent during a young age. Her talent and grace was spotted very early on, and became "it girl" for Hitchcock early on and enjoyed success rather quickly after a very short rout
- The importance of family: whenever Kelly is in trouble - whether liking the wrong person, or feeling lonely - having an affluent family rescued her rather quickly, seemingly turning a negative into a positive
Grace Kelly was such a stunning beauty that when you combine that stunning beauty with stunningly beautiful photographs of that stunning beauty, it is truly an stunning sight to see.
I wish the other books in this series was more like this one because the book is smaller and the photos bigger. The only real problem is the photos are scattered and not organized through her childhood are in chronological order. If the photos were grouped together and better organized I would have added a star. I am also curious on why baby photos of her son and daughter Stephanie but there's no baby photos of daughter Caroline.
Not only is this an amazing collection of photos, but the forward by Tommy Hilfiger and the short biography in the beginning are a great look into who she was. Curated partially by her son Albert, this is a coffee table book worth not leaving unread.
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in the size of this addition to the "Life in Pictures" series (my own fault for not reading the dimensions before buying). The other "Life in Pictures" books I have purchased have been large, oversized productions that bring to life the lives of their subjects by way of extravagantly sized photos with captions in a comfortable font. The print in this book is literally 1/16th of an inch tall. Also, it is very oddly arranged. The photos skip around the Princess' life in a haphazard manner. The arrangement made no sense to me, and I would have preferred a chronological order.
That said, the scope of the photos is expansive in its inclusion of many private photos of the Princess and her family, as well as gorgeous portraits, unposed snapshots, and film stills. As a result of this book, I feel as though I know Princess Grace more intimately than ever before. The biographical section at the beginning of the book is a good overview of many of the important events of her life, and there are many quotes included, both by Princess Grace and about her. But the main story here is the pictures, which encompass so many of the moments, both private and public, of her life.
Overall, this comprehensive collection is a wonderful look at the life of Princess Grace. Although it is a bit small in size for a book primarily telling a story through pictures, I believe most will be satisfied with the scope of the photos included.
This book has great pictures of Grace Kelly and also provides brief explanations about the pictures and descriptions of her life. I just loved looking at it. Grace was for sure one of the great beauties!
