A brief guide to tutoring, with an anthology of essays. The fourth edition introduces sophisticated approaches to tutoring students of varying cultural backgrounds and new attention to technology, activity theory, ethical dimensions of tutoring writing, and challenges to theories of the writing process.
This collection of articles on current issues in the administration of college writing centers can be tough going at times (paradoxically, compositionists often are not compelling writers). But there is some thought-provoking material here that I will integrate in my leadership of our college's learning center.

Though the information in this volume is helpful, the title is a bit misleading. I found that most of these articles were more geared toward writing center professionals/directors than tutors themselves.
Again, with any anthology, it's hard to say how much an evaluation would be determined by scope or quality of contributing articles. And with writing center research, the room for variation is even greater: what are the standards of validity? case study? empirical research? what are our responsibilities? hypertext? counseling? It's a wide and unkempt field.
Some of the articles were more useful for practice (for example, turns out that non-directive tutoring is not very useful for ELL, members of submissive cultures, and many returning students) while others were less useful (even if I were to tutor someone coming from Deaf culture--unlikely, though it may be-- how do I know she'll have the same characteristics as the single individual described in the case study?). I am grateful, though, for the introduction to the field and the many references to articles and authors that I should read to better understand this area of WPA.
Really good introduction to some of the important theory and research that informs practice in Writing Centers. We have put this resource to good use in our own Center.
Some helpful articles, some a little too theoretical. Really liked the chapter on student-centered tutoring. All around a great resources for tutors & writing center directors
