About the author
Ingmar Bergman
166 books617 followersErnst Ingmar Bergman was a nine-time Academy Award-nominated Swedish film, stage, and opera director. He depicted bleakness and despair as well as comedy and hope in his explorations of the human condition. He is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in cinematic history.
He directed 62 films, most of which he wrote, and directed over 170 plays. Some of his internationally known favorite actors were Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson, and Max von Sydow. Most of his films were set in the stark landscape of his native Sweden, and major themes were often bleak, dealing with death, illness, betrayal, and insanity.
Bergman was active for more than 60 years, but his career was seriously threatened in 1976 when he suspended a number of pending productions, closed his studios, and went into self-imposed exile in Germany for eight years following a botched criminal investigation for alleged income tax evasion.

Veliki majstor Ingmar Bergman, u svakom smislu.

Apa beszélget a nyolcéves fiával, 1926:
„–Apa miért nem szeret velünk lenni Dufnasban?
– Bezártnak érzem itt magam. Nem tudom, érted-e, mire gondolok.
– Nem.
– Nem vagyok a magam ura. Nem én döntöm el a dolgokat.
– Nagyanya dönti el?
– Talán így is lehet mondani.
– Ezért gyűlöli apa nagyanyát?
– Gyűlölöm?
Apa leheletnyi mosolyra húzza száját, és összekulcsolt kezét nézi.
– Dag szerint apa és nagyanya gyűlöli egymást.
– Nagyanya és én sok mindenben másképp gondolkodunk. Igen, szinte mindenben. És ezért dühösek vagyunk. Ezt meg kell értened.
– Igen.”

Ingmar Bergman is, with his father, one of Sunday's children. In America, it is said that the child born on Sunday is happier than other children. Not so in Sweden--they are said to be sensitive, holding special gifts that include the ability to see the dead. Bergman, a true genius, writes a tale of a summer spent in a run down old house, but as a novel. He is referred to as Pu as a child, Ingmar as an adult; I will use the separate names to distinguish in my review.
Pu is a small child, eight years old, profoundly afraid of his parents separating. He witnesses conversations that confirm his fears, freezing him. His brother Dag is rather cruel to him, and he prefers to hold his sister or play dolls with her. He is a sweet, sensitive child who doesn't want his world to fall apart. He wants to use his gifts as Sunday's child to go to a spot where a watchmaker committed suicide and ask him when he will die. This actually happens in a dream; the answer is "Always."
Death is a common theme in the book. Maj, a sort of nanny/maid that Pu is very fond of, kills herself in a river a few years after the book takes place; Pu also sees another dead body float up. Pu often wishes people are dead, but when he thinks they are he is panic stricken. It goes deeper than simple events, though. Ingmar's father is dying in a "flashback to the future." As a priest, he should put his faith in God, but he seems to have lost his faith; he is afraid, and Ingmar is also a bit afraid.
Faith also plays an important role. Pu goes on a trip with his father, who is to give a sermon on the Day of Transfiguration. Pu states angrily that anyone who believes in God is stupid, because he feels God has been cruel to him. Perhaps he really thinks this, but it is more likely a small, childish outrage he doesn't mean. And, perhaps most importantly, as old Mr. Bergman is dying, he takes his son's hand and tries to bless him, the living and well.
Sunday's Children is really about Pu/Ingmar and his relationship with his father. Pu loves his father, and it is clear his father at least likes him more than his other son. He is fond and smiling, but suddenly he will violently hit his children, terrifying them in his rage. It makes Pu want to cry. Ingmar tries to tell his father this when he asks what he had done wrong, but his father insists he was quite mild-tempered. Perhaps because of this, Ingmar feels very little when the man dies, despite some truly tender moments together as Sunday's Children.
For such a little book, Sunday's Children really packs a punch. It's a bit slow in the beginning, but it sets the mood properly. The writing style is so easy to visualize that you can picture the book as an Ingmar Bergman film. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys deeply touching literature, or books about faith or family.

On reading this you get a real grasp of just how much of Bergman's work is grounded in a handful of personal experiences. As you read on and on you see various sources bubble up, and we know off page, those moments built and flowed and poured into estuaries that fed his vast filmographic sea. For that reason any fan of his films should really take the time to read this for insight into his films.
As a work in its own right it's an interesting memoir and look into the mind of a child. Bergman paints a vivid picture of the torments of childhood and the quiet inner world, punctured by older siblings, parents, odd extended family, and other orbiting adults. Parts are very knowing and not in obvious ways, either. Small accurately captured childhood feelings you'd forgotten about, described and brought back to you.

Although the story happens over the course of summer, it was still very cozy for me to read it in autumn somehow. I guess the author was very descriptive about the surroundings and atmosphere, which made me very warm and miss Sweden. There are a lot of detail depictions of the environment and settings, which, I can imagine, can be quite boring for some people, but I didn’t mind.
I think it was very interesting to read how author was writing about himself as a little boy and referring to him in third person. In old Swedish folklore, a child born on a Sunday was believed to be uniquely blessed with supernatural gifts. They are more sensitive or perceptive, I believe. I am not a Sunday Child, but I could see myself in little Pu, who was picking up a lot of social hints as a kid.
In my opinion, writer described in a perfect manner the unreliable parent, who sometimes also gives you crumbs of warmth and love. I loved also reading flash-forwards about his relationship with father as an adult.
Very touching story with a neat way of delivery.

Found this at the library and I was enamored by the title and intrigued by the fact Bergman wrote novels. Turns out this is the second of a collection so I shall have to seek out the others. Reminded me of The Summer Book in the descriptions of rural, ramshackle Nordic summers, but here the family dynamic is far busier, and Pu has an imagination that runs wild. There's even a dream where he hallucinates a knight playing chess with the devil! Bergman uses time in surprising ways, just when you're used to the linear diary of this summer, he interjects with hindsight, and in a few scenes, brings the narrative into the present.

I have to admit for the first part of Sunday's Children, I was bored because the story dragged. I was wondering where the story was going because it seemed like a whole lot of nothingness was going on. As I’m reading, these questions were going through my head: Would it ever pick up? When was something going to happen?
It's a short story of only 153 pages. It's full of descriptive scenery's that you can vision easily in your head as you are reading along. Once I got passed the slow part, and as I read more, I started to appreciate it more.
The story behind the title of the book, Sunday’s Children is, “children born on Sunday are said to have special gifts of sensitivity, imagination, and clairvoyance, including the ability to see goblins and ghosts.” Pu, a Sunday’s child is 8 and his brother Dag is 10 who is cruel to Pu. His father is a Pastor, who is an abusive husband and father. His mother is very unhappy and wants to leave him, but it’s a time when it’s not really acceptable, let alone being a wife of a Pastor. Pu parent’s rent Pastor Dahlberg’s ramshackle house for the summer. It’s very close to his grandparent’s place, a place they have always stayed at every summer until that summer. It’s not until further along that we are brought into “today” with Pu. His father is in his 80’s and dying. Pu visits him. This story is flashbacks to that summer, and leads up to his tale of the journey he and his father take to one town via bicycle and boat, where his father is going to preach.
There are only 3 chapters. I found when the new chapter began, it was an odd place for one to end and the other to begin. It was in the same scene.
I found there were quite a number of random things that happened in this story I really didn’t necessarily ever want to read about. Like when Pu’s Aunt was having a bad case of diarrhea (go into quite the description of it), when Pu was having a poop, or when Dag was forcing Pu to eat a worm – I’m reading all these scenes while I’m eating my breakfast and lunch! Yuck!
I could give it no more than a 3.

I really enjoyed this second installment of Bergman's autobiography, which is about his experiences as an 8-year-old staying at his parents' dilapidated country house in Sweden, and the tensions between his mother and father. It is very evocative, full of the sounds, smells, tastes of childhood and nature. There's an earthiness here and a pessimism; there is a very poignant description of an aunt's terrible stomach problems and her painful trips to the outside privy. The flash forwards in time are very effective with descriptions of his harsh, religious father being juxtaposed with accounts of the father's dying days. The book really enriches films like 'Waiting Women', 'Wild Strawberries' and 'Smiles on a Summer Night'.
There are a number of standout scenes in the account which really have the power of Bergman's best cinematic scenes. These are for me:
The account of Pu (the Bergman alter ego) being forced as an eight year old to eat a worm by his sadistic 12 year old brother Dag for some money, and then being denied it.
Pu listening to his parents arguing about whether to split up, and the child's agony over this.
The description of Pu's trip with his father to preach on a Sunday, crossing by ferry over a river, and arguing with the child of the church minister, a horrid boy with eczema, about whether there is a God.
The flash-forwards to the descriptions of the father dying, and the very different perception his father's carer, and I assume lover, Sister Edit, has of the father.
The accounts of the fear the father instilled in the children and his wife.
While it is not a perfect work of prose, it worked wonderfully well in tandem with the films.

Kõige olulisem on mõlema raamatu puhul kirjeldamatu – mingi karge, põhjamaine tundlikkus, tahaks lausa öelda erootika. See on millegi ütlemata jätmine, inimese igavene läbipaistmatus, avatus loodusele, valu paratamatus... "Pühapäevalaste" isa on samuti traagiline, aga siin on see rohkem sordiini all, vihjamisi, vaikimisi, sest lapse maailma mahub palju kõike muud.
