Passion Marked

Rate this book
Ellie has worked her sundress-loving ass off for the chance to train the most aggressive racehorses alive—those cursed with darkness-bound Nocturne magic. But all work and no play has left her flirting game sorely lacking. So, when she encounters a Nocturne-cursed centaur lady while waiting for the acceptance letter that will make her an official trainer, Ellie finally pushes herself out of her comfort zone.

Nadine knows that no one will ever love her for who she is, not with her Nocturne curse; she’s fully prepared for Ellie’s adorably clumsy advances to be a moment of fun before she’s left in the dust again. But when their fling accidentally links them together with a Passion Mark—a permanent, magical brand which binds their vitality to their physical relationship—Nadine wonders if this is her chance at true love.

True love seems out of the question, however, because having a Nocturne’s Passion Mark disqualifies Ellie from racing. As Nadine helps Ellie search for a way to remove their Passion Marks, they stumble into the dark truths of the racetrack life, including an illegal nocturne arena that wants Nadine as its central attraction, willingly or not. Soon both women find themselves questioning everything they thought they believed about their lives—and each other.

3.50 Stars. Good but not great. After all the wonderful reviews for Silk’s first WLW book Spellbound, I was excited to get to read her new book. I thought this was good for the type of story that it was, but I never felt completely invested into the book like I was hoping to.

This book is what I would call a light urban fantasy, steamy-romance. This almost felt like it wanted to be an erotic-romance, but it didn’t quite get there. The sex scenes had a little dom/sub play and light bondage, but overall it didn’t feel like it hit the erotic category for me. The sex scenes had some steam, but the “dirty talk” or whatever you want to call it, felt a little forced so it took me out of the moment some. The pairing is also a bit odd so I think I had a little trouble with that too.

This is the story about a woman who sleeps with a magical demon centaur, and they get passion marked by accident. A magical bonding mark where the couple has to be together or they could die. I dug this premise and I thought it was very unusually which I always like. You don’t read centaur/human parings much and I don’t think I have ever heard of a “demon” centaur. For those who may not know, a centaur is the head torso of a human and body/legs or a horse. While I tried to enjoy the steamy romance between these two, it’s an odd paring to wrap your head around. I think Silk did the sex scenes well, so it seemed like it was between two humans, but it still didn’t quite work for me.

I thought this world, while surprisingly a bit dark, was well made by Silk. This is urban fantasy so think humans, in a populated area, but with magical creatures walking around. I really wanted to like this book more than I did, but it never completely clicked. I will still be reading Spellbound because Silk writes well and I think that book will be more up my alley.

An ARC was given to me by lezreviewbooks.com for a review.

An incredibly unique story, but one that didn't quite hit the mark for me. Set in a fantasy world of magics and mystical creatures of light and dark, where there is a lot of what I guess you could say 'racism' directed toward the dark or "demon" creatures as they are called (but we learn this is essentially a slur label), like our MC a dark centaur called Nadine. The world has regular modern technology like cell phones and internet etc. But there's disparity between the dark and light creatures and their standing and treatment, plus the attitudes in the world.

I liked that one of our mains, Ellie, had a medical condition called POTS, where her heart and blood pressure would drop and cause her fainting spells. Both Ellie and Nadine as characters were charming and flawed, yet adorable at times, too. Also incredibly frustrating in trying to deny their connection and not figure out a way to 'make it work' which is where I struggled a lot.

I would have loved to actually see the two get to know one another on a deeper level, beyond the slightly kinky BDSM sex they would have. (Nothing too outrageous, just Nadine the centaur constantly tying up Ellie's arms and hands and teasing her, and having her call her mistress and 'beg' etc - but that stuff isn't really my jam.) Note: we don't get any below the belt centaur stuff, thank goodness!

There's a lot of detail about horses and riding, as Ellie wants to become a trainer of magical nocturne horses. We find out a lot about Nadine's past and her trying to make her own career in their world, via help from her friend the delightfully whimsical Dela who was a joy to meet. You definitely feel the angst for Nadine and her feelings of being at the bottom of the rung in society, no matter how much she tries to prove herself, and struggling with her self worth and the fact Ellie insists she wants their bond-mark removed. I also enjoyed side character Brecker the serious stable master and his musical philosophical husband, Flower.

But I guess I failed to really feel anything deeply between the couple, the sexcapades made me uncomfortable, I didn't find them sexy - and their angsting in their heads about all their doubts and insisting they want their bond removed simply didn't interest me enough to find it entertaining overall.

I wish I could articulate better exactly what didn't work for me, I do usually try to be specific so as not to be critical for no reason - but I guess this is just one time where maybe too much oddness was happening at once, which distracted from the important parts?

I think this will be on Kindle Unlimited once it releases, so maybe check it out.

I liked this book a lot more than I expected. While Spellbound, my first book by Ophelia Silk, was okay, this one was far better. It’s not without flaws, however. After a very promising first chapter, I felt like I was reading two stories at once for a while. In the first one, one of the MCs was just saved from an underground race track and it was all dark and escaping the bad guys, while in the other, it’s all flirting and instalust. I do not mind instalust at all but the timing felt unsettling. Soon though, the two arcs meshed in a more plausible way, and only once did I again wonder about what I was reading, later in the story.

Ellie has devoted her whole life to becoming a night horse trainer. She’s almost there, waiting for a spot in the NHRA to become available. A fling with a Nocturne centaur leaves her marked in a way she’d have to forgo her dream career. Nadine is used to being rejected because of who she is, and seeing Ellie so distraught by their passion marks moves her to promise to find a way to get them removed. Neither is prepared for the feelings that grow after what wasn’t even a one-night stand.

There’s a lot of miscommunication between the two MCs, yet I didn’t mind it much. They come from opposite worlds, and even though they seem to speak the same language, their life experiences are so wildly different it didn’t feel like it was entirely their fault.

Like its characters, this book is clumsy and not sure what it wants to be, and it should be annoying – it is, at times – but there’s something endearing about it. I like the characters, Silk writes well, and she took a risk with an unusual pairing: one of the MCs is a human with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), the other a demigirl centaur cursed with dark magic. While I’m not one hundred percent convinced by the story, I like these two together and that was a long shot. In the end, I had a nice time reading this novel, and since my ratings reflect for a good part my enjoyment of a book, Passion Marked gets four stars from me.

A romance between a racehorse trainer and Nocturne centaur! The first few chapters really sucked me into the story but I was slightly disappointed in how the rest of the book played out. Ellie (human, she/her) and Nadine (centaur, demi-girl, she/her, Mx.) are cute together and I really liked their interactions and small touches. Note that there is also quite some sex scenes going on, but I’m here for the cuteness and Ellie’s attempt at winking.

The writing of Passion Marked was enjoyable. It is my second book by Silk, and while the first one Spellbound (my review) was a fantasy romance with a simplistic plot, this book was somewhat too expansive for me. I had some issues with the pacing of the story where the first half was slow and everything happened close to the end. There is a lot of talk about magic, like Nadine’s Nocturne magic, but we don’t really get to understand how these magical elements worked. The only thing I know about Nadine’s magic is that... she has shadows that curl up at her hooves? So the world-building didn’t work great for me and I had the feeling of the world setting being just out of reach. I did enjoy the fact that there were phones and high school students of different species (just random characters; this book is NOT YA), making the world in Passion Marked feel more like ours.

A huge part of the book is built around the discrimination against Nocturnes. The more I read, the more I felt like other people’s attitude toward Nocturnes is just like racism in our world. While the characters took forms of different species and magical abilities instead of, say, skin color, I don’t know what to say about the storyline based off of the very real racism.

The best part of the book had to be the characters. I love Nadine’s friend Dela, a Diurne, who is this eccentric rich lady that is very flirty and cares about nothing but her own comfort and her friends’ wellbeing. Dela is aro/ace and very ridiculous in an endearing way. I also really like the gay couple Flower, who randomly bursts into singing love songs, and Brecker, who seems stern but is actually very soft-hearted.

I had high hopes for Passion Marked, but it seems to have missed the mark for me. The characters were lots of fun though, so I’m bumping my rating to 3 stars.

content warnings: racism (against Nocturnes), graphic sex, light bdsm, kidnapping, physical abuse, self harm (for magical purpose), blood, violence, blood consumption (for Nocturnes), forced captivity

3 stars. This was a bit boring and I didn't care for either main character. I just never grew attached to them. Some of the side characters were cool though and the writing was good. It's paced well which made it a quick read but overall I wasn't into it and I found the BDSM aspect to be out of place and came from nowhere. It was kinda cringe but this wasn't terrible.

This fantasy romance is unique and truly remarkable. Silk has done a phenomenal job with world building and character development all while delivering a romance that is tender, spicy, and sometimes heartbreaking.

Silk has created a world with a super cool intricate magic system and a large imbalance of power and rights as a result. Light magic (Diurne) is the upper class, considered good and benevolent regardless of actions. Magicless tend to be in the middle class. Dark magic (Nocturne) is considered lower class and given little to no rights and are looked down on by society. The major imbalance between these three classes is a major focus of the story and I loved how Silk navigated the social and political aspects. The magic was super interesting to learn about and I really enjoyed the system Silk created and how it drove the story.

The other magical aspect is the passion mark. The passion mark is a really interesting concept with many pros an cons. Two souls intertwined, feeding and strengthening each other while also forcing the couple to stay close to one another for all time. I loved this take on literal soulmates and liked how it was interwoven with the magic system.

The atmosphere of this story was on the darker side. People treated poorly or enslaved because of their magic, society has a whole failing its people. The darker elements of the story were very fitting and added depth and complexity to the story.

I really loved all of the different romance aspects of the story. From the sweet and tender love to the spicy and darker desires. There is a light dom/sub aspect and some bondage as well, both felt very fitting to the characters and the story. The chemistry between Ellie and Nadine is amazing and the steamy and intense passion they share is to die for. The two women share so much passion and love but society and the class system (as well as Ellie’s selfishness) is constantly trying to drive them apart.

Ellie has a marvelous character development arc. She is only focused on herself and is naïve and often turns a blind eye to how Nocturnes are treated until she becomes bonded with one and is forced to see the injustice Nocturnes face everyday. I loved how much she grew as a person throughout the story.

Nadine has had the hardest life and is just the absolute sweetest. I fell in love with Nadine from the very start, She is so sweet even though life and society have not been kind to her. I spent a great portion of the book thinking Nadine was too good for Ellie an I was so happy with how their relationship grew and evolved.

I was expecting to enjoy this story but was unprepared for just how much I would love it. A beautiful and dark fantasy romance full of love, passion, an intrigue. This is another home run for Ophelia Silk.

Trigger warnings: self harm, slavery/kidnapping, abuse

Passion Marked is my second read by Ophelia Silk and it's definitely one of the most unique fantasy romance novels I've ever read. The premise of a romance between a human and a centaur had me intrigued from the get-go and I was so excited when the author reached out to me to offer me an eARC. Silk's worldbuilding is absolutely wonderful in this book, particularly with regards to the different non-human species, such as the dark Nocturne horses, elves, and of course Nadine who is a centaur cursed by Nocturne magic. I was rather confused going into the book, however, as it felt a bit like a fairytale-esque fantasy at first then a more modern urban fantasy and then a mix, and I would have loved a bit more development in that sense.

I also really liked the concept of the romance - after what the main characters go into as just a fling, the two end up with a passion mark, meaning that they are bound to each other and if they stray too far from one another they could fall ill and potentially even die. It was really interesting to see the almost enemies-to-lovers route that their relationship took, with a lot of ups and downs along the way. I was a bit wary when it came to the sex scenes and, although the author did a very good job with them in general, at times I just didn't feel all that comfortable with the whole half-horse thing!

Finally, something I particularly enjoyed about this book was the representation - our main character is sapphic and has POTS (she uses a cane throughout the book, too), and we also have on-page demi-girl and pansexual representation in the form of the love interest, as well as other queer and POC characters throughout. Overall, this was an entertaining read, and nothing like I've ever read before. I would definitely recommend Silk's previous novel, Spellbound to this one, as I absolutely loved that book, but nonetheless, I'm glad to have read this!

Thanks to the author for an eARC in return for an honest review!

This is my first book by this author. Will not be my last. A wonderful book filled with horses and magical beings. Nadine is demon Nocturne with a heart filled with sorrow. Ellie is a human with a passion for racing night horses. I chance encounter links them with a passion mark. They must stay in contact or pass away. But Nadine as a Nocturne is forbidden from going to the night races. Night races are all Ellie lives for. Nadine helps Ellie find a way to remove the passion mark. But Nadine has fallen for Ellie and it will break her heart. This is a wonderful book. Please read to find a ending.

I enjoyed this book. There were several things that ticked the boxes for me especially the strong fem leads.

Likes
Strong fem leads
Fun plot line
Side characters that feel as alive as the main
LGBTQIA+ Representation
Flower annoys everyone and they still love him
Weak/disabled main character is the one able to rescue the strong one
Both mains are flawed
BDSM is light and bedroom fun level and easily approachable
Good level of spicy while still maintaining plot
Not an instant love, they have to build it
Oops bonded trope
HEA while dismantling corruption

Fantasy setting with
Light vs dark trope
Class system
Orcs, centaurs, and elves oh my

Dislikes
Screaming "but you both want to stay together"
Centaur seeming uncomfortable with horse part of self
Unnecessary on page death (only once and not handled badly just seemed to not fit)
Spicy was one side focused

This book would interest someone looking for a fantasy based drama with some sapphic spicy.

a pretty charming LGBT urban fantasy story with likable flawed characters - some a little ridiculous, but still charming. at its heart it forces the FMC to review the flawed system her dreams are built upon, and confront the society in charge of upholding the barriers that block her sweetheart from leading the life she wants to live.

I really loved this story. I liked the passion mark idea and how Nadine and Ellie were as a bound couple. I like how Ellie finally saw the world of Night Horse racing through Nadine’s perspective. I really enjoyed the world building and hope tho read more of this author’s books.

This was an okay read. I think this is the only book I’ve read so far with a centaur. I liked Ellie and Nadine’s chemistry and the whole meaning behind the Passion Mark. That’s something new to me. I thought the book dragged on in some areas, which caused me to put it down quite often. That’s something I don’t usually do. Overall, I look forward to reading more from this author.
