Feral Shifters #4

Claimed Mate

Rate this book
The thrilling final book in the Feral Shifters series!

Warning: the blurb below contains spoilers for the previous books in the series. If you're not caught up, start with book one, Rejected Mate.

*

Once, I hated these men. Now I’ll risk everything to save them.

As I watched Kian be dragged down into the shadow realm, I swear he took a piece of my heart with him.

And I’m going to get it back. I’m going to get him back.

I don’t care that it might be dangerous. I don’t care that Quinton is still hunting us down, determined to destroy his original feral shifters now that they’ve betrayed him, and closer than ever to opening the veil between the shadow realm and earth.

I don’t care that fate itself seems to be set against us.

I don’t care what the prophecies say.

Because Kian, Frost, and Malix are my mates.

Mine.

And I finally understand what that means.

Claimed Mate is the final book in the Feral Shifters series, a paranormal shifter romance. It contains cursing, three anti-hero alpha males, steamy scenes, and a badass heroine who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.

The ending definitely picked up the pace and got more interesting. I think my mood was already iffy since the middle two books ended up becoming so boring though so I can't say I ended up loving the book.

Mmmk. I just read these too close together and my annoyance has peaked. Incoming rant...and probably mild out of context spoilers...

Ok, if they were able to get to the shadow realm THAT easy why tf did they waste years looking for thin spots in the veil?? 🙄 Clearly all they had to do was stop and ask for directions. Men.

And she demands to go with them into the shadow realm even though we spent 3 books repeating the fact that she's useless against the shadows and the guys spend all of their time trying to keep her alive. Instead of letting the shadow shifters go find their missing friend in the shadow realm and staying behind to help fight the battle with the other packs she goes anyway to be an absolute liability. Good plan 🙄

I love that we've all come to terms with our feelings but reading the same monologue from each of the guys' perspectives AND hers is...too much.

These dudes do not know how to let a lady cry. They constantly bust in and demand what they can do to fix it. We don't need you to fix everything we need to feel our feelings, back UP. And omg everytime she goes to a stream one of them follows and tree sex ensues. Haven't I already read this part 400 times? Why am I still reading these books?!

How exactly does a wolf "scoop her onto my back" without arms or hands? And how disappointing that we don't get to see her shadow wolf.

Anyway, glad we got this all concluded. It's my own fault that I'm here. 😐

I didn’t feel like the last 2 books of this series were necessary. I think these plots could’ve fit in the first two books which were much more action packed. I felt like the series was dragging on and my interest quickly dwindled. There was a lot of repetition in this book in terms of the characters thinking about their emotions and what they’ve been through to the point where I wanted to stop reading but kept on just so I could finish the series.

Loved these books

Another great series by Callie Rose. The plot was well thought out. Her verbiage was excellent. I could close my eyes and see the picture her words conveyed. Loose ends were tied up. I loved the characters. Amora and her men had a beautiful love story. It wasn’t the same story as her others but a novel plot and fresh characters. This series has consumed me. I have done little else and now I am having a let down. These types of books/series are hard to follow for most other books. I am sorry to see it end.

After narrowly escaping Quentin and his shadows in the last book, Amora and her remaining mates now have to find Kian who has disappeared into the shadow realm. Now Amora has learned that her old pack is in danger of Quentin and is racing against time to get there to help protect them. I loved how Amora and her mates came full circle from the first book to this one. Their relationships are so solid and strong now, it was beautiful to read.

I completed the series and overall it was ok, i felt like the last two books kind of dragged on.

Amora’s mates are 3 feral shifters, they have shadows and are bound to bring the shadow realm to the human world so she sets out to destroy them before they can.

This book was a great finish to this entire series. It’s action packed, steamy, and emotionally engaging.
With the last book ending in Kian getting dragged to shadow realm. This picks up with Amora doing everything and anything to get him back. There is one last battle between Quinton and Amora’s old pack that ends with her getting kidnapped. She realizes that with and her mates she has the power to stop him once and for all. The only problem is it might actually cost her life like the witches prophecy. Amora ends up in the shadow realm alone and hurt leaving it to the men to get her back.

The story for this series was really good.. The 3rd book being the best of the bunch. I was a little unimpressed with the writing. In all 4 books, I did some skimming, because we spend way too much time reading the same thoughts via their inner monologues over and over again. Seriously, we read the exact same thoughts multiple times and that gets old so quickly. So some skimming was involved, but I really liked the overall story! Just felt like we could us an editor perhaps.

Might reread this series in the future, which means I recommend it!

5.2/10

Definitely an improvement over the last two as I felt the story concluded relatively satisfyingly.

However, I also feel this has sort of been my breaking point for the contemporary paranormal/fantasy romance genre for a few key reasons. they are personal reasons and won't fully be reflective of the quality of the books if this is the sort of thing you're looking for but I'm learning with absolute certainty that I am not.

First and I think most important to me personally: The sex scenes just aren't engaging at all. And I don't mean they aren't written well enough (they are, aside from the weird need for the author to have her protagonists CRASH lips into each other for some inexplicable reason), but they're so boring. Because nothing happens in them at all that feels like it needs to take place in a paranormal shifter romance.

Where are the knots? Where are the shifting kinks? Where is literally any fantasy element incorporated into the sex or really any of the story outside of the shifter wolf action scenes? This is a problem I'm having more and more with ALL fantasy romance. What is the point of having a fantasy story where the sex is the most bland, vanilla, normal, mundane sex you could imagine? And no, a bit of butt stuff doesn't change that fact.

Of the three male protagonists/mates, can you - other writers, the author - tell me what their kinks or interests were? Who had a foot/paw fetish? Which one was particularly intent on using his lips on her? Did any of them have a breast fixation? Which one liked getting spicy with say, claws or knives or a danger element to the fun? None of them. All three of them could have been copy and pasted. None of them had any personality, skill, ability, or unique interests that set them apart in bed.

Which is a problem when like 2/3 of the book's runtime/length/page count was dedicated to repeated, uninspired sex scenes.

I like sex scenes. They're fun to write and to read. But there needs to be some sort of hook to them. This book had no hooks. This whole series was dreadfully lacking in hooks. Some books I can say 'on that's the scene where this happens' or 'that's the scene that happened here', but this book? I dunno, they all blended together. Again, none were bad but none stood out as being particularly unique or interesting or fun.

And as an aside, I'm sorry but I'm so sick of every generic 'oh he actually used his mouth on me' scene being inexplicably the most mind blowing, body-blasting, soul altering moment. Stop writing sex like it's transformative every time, especially if it's generic, vanilla, and the same as every other sex scene in the book.

When every encounter is special, none of them are.

I just want some erotica where interesting stuff happens. Use the lore you've created to make unique scenes. Create a magic system and use it. Make some sort of culture or world that makes the kink stand out or be memorable. This book series was called 'Feral Shifters' and not once did the feral or shifter parts intersect between her legs. Not once.

Also, if I hear the word 'mate' one more time I'm going to carve my ear drums out of their sockets.

The idea of Fated MAtes is dumb to begin with (Thank you STephanie Meyer for imprinting on every teenager that grew up at the turn of the century), but like all tropes it can be done well if there's some sort of unique take on it or it's well written. but no. IT's literally always just an excuse for writers to eschew ANY sort of chemistry or character development. And/or it's just to excuse bad behaviour on his part.

Also, the Alpha theory shit needs to go. It was dumb when it was proposed, it's been debunked, and even if it was true it has no place in a werewolf society that knows better.

I want to love this genre, because I write adjacent to it. but honestly, it's so hard to defend it from misogynistic chodes when so many of the tropes and plot elements are as stupid, bad, and toxic as the haters say. I want to like this but it's so hard to do that if you have even the slightest hint of standards.

Immediately after finishing reading this book I picked up "The Frugal Wizard's Guide to Surviving Medieval England" by Brandon Sanderson and only a few chapters in I'm reminded why he's a literary chef and Callie Rose is only a cook. He has all the same elements I tend to complain about in other books (Modern vernacular in a medieval fantasy setting, 'well that happened' quirky humour, and a mishmash of concepts and narrative styles that don't really work on paper), yet I find his writing refreshing and fun while this....this is honestly kinda bad. It's proof that a good writer can take even the worst tropes and make it work.

But then like 90% of the genre (Romantasy) is the same recycled trope soup with almost no heart or soul behind it. And while I get that trash is fun and this was always intended to be trashy (I love trash, that's not an insult, I came here for trashy fun), this series forgot to be fun. It was trashy and dramatic but nothing about it stood out. Nothing came at me like 'oooh, that's fun', or 'that's interesting'. IT was a steady string of predictable drama and uninspired smut.

Reasonably well written and it did end on a good note. But the whole series just felt like someone going through the motions, not telling a story they needed to tell.

So again, it was barely 3 stars for a solid end and decent writing but man the storytelling and smut were both so lackluster.

Callie Rose wraps up her Feral Shifters series with Claimed Mate, the final book in Amora's story. This series really messed with me, rejected mates, ultimate betrayal, a prophecy, witches, magic, hell dimensions, the apocalypse, and so much more. The emotional hits kept coming with this book but things turned around and I was so rooting for Amora and the guys.

Frost, Malix, and Kian finally let Amora into their hearts and the reason behind all their decisions. They aren't bad guys just trying to do their best with the crappy situation they were born into. They never had anyone care for them, not even a true pack but Amora has opened up a whole new side to them. Someone cares about them, is willing to fight for them, and that's everything, and gives them something to fight for. As for Amora, she's forgiven them, you can tell by her actions and she opens herself for the possibility of more, she finally takes stock and acknowledges what she truly feels. While she may have left a great pack in Montana and went packless for a while, she isn't packless anymore, the guys are something more. I'm so happy that they made up.

The thing about Callie is she doesn't write boring stories, like her previous books this story was full of action. Quinton, the trio's old alpha, escalates, his move for power is bringing the apocalypse incredibly close. The attacks, the shadow beast that is brought to Earth, and the changes he brings about are some dark stuff, there was a lot of fighting going on. I finally got a better picture of this shadow world that Quinton is obsessed with and a few things are explained and Callie answered even more questions by the end of the book.

Claimed Mate was a high-action read that wrapped up the Feral Shifters series really well. I loved seeing the familiar faces of Sable and her mates from the Claimed Wolves series it was only right that we got a glimpse of Amora in Sable's series that we get a glimpse of her in Amora's. After everything that they've been through, rogue shifters, a diabolical witch, a broken mate bond, shadow wolves, and more, it's good to see Amora got her happy ending. Callie is one of my people and I'm eager to see where she takes us next.

Kian has been pulled into the shadow realm and Amira and the guys have got to get him out. They race to Gwen(the witch who gave her the original prophecy) to ask for help. When they reach her, she has some books that help them create a portal to the shadow realm and a way to pull them back. They rescue Kian, but when they get back they see Quinton and he’s stabbed Gwen. They fight, but Quinton runs off. Gwen tells Amora that she lied and that Amora has the power. Amora doesn’t know what she means, but Gwen does from her injuries.

They realize that Quinton is going to the packs and changing wolves into shadow wolves, and her original pack is near. So she wants to go and prepare them. When she gets back to her pack, they prepare for war, but when Quinton shows up, he takes Amora and leaves everyone else behind.

The guys race to save Amora. Quinton explains that Gwen had given him a prophecy and said that Amora was the key to getting the veil open and he could harness the power of the shadows. Realizing that all the prophecies were coming true and the guys were about to open the veil and that by doing so they would destroy her, they were obviously not in a hurry to do what Quinton wanted. Amora remembered what Gwen said about lying and that she had the power. She realized they needed to open the veil and go through with it.

The guys all acknowledged their mate bond which allowed them to tear through the veil, but as soon as they did Amora took all of the shadows into herself and took all of the shadows out of the surrounding shadow wolves and then killed Quinton. She then took all of the shadows through the veil back to the shadow realm. The guys were able to go through the veil and rescue Amora and bring her back. She now has shadow marks too. But they all get their HEA and move in with Sable!s pack.

Full Series Review

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶
Darkness Level: 💀

I have always been a big fan of Callie's contemporary novels. When it comes to PNR, it's a bit of hit or miss for me. Sometimes I love them, sometimes I don't, and sometimes it runs towards ambivalence. I'm not sure exactly which one is driving my feelings about this series.

Callie's writing is always excellent. The series started out strong with some hints of enemies to lovers, danger, and will they/won't they.

Now, everyone has different opinions about pacing. Some love faster paced, while others prefer slower. Unfortunately for this series, I prefer faster paced. So much of the book was the characters travelling back and forth to different locations. And throughout the whole series was the constant "they're my mates, they're not my mates. I like them, I hate them. They should be my mates, I don't want them. No, I do." I began skipping the travelling scenes and will they/won't they as the repetition became a little too much.

⬆️ Now again, that's on me. 😁 Since I prefer faster paced novels, I would have preferred a shorter series with less of that going on. BUT, it does lead to some excellent character development. Which I would miss out on had the author cut a lot of it out.

I'm a mass of contradictions.

I enjoyed the story overall. The shadow wolves idea, the danger, the psychotic enemy. All the lovely spice. 😉 I just think I prefer her contemporary books more, so will be sticking to those in the future.

But if you love PNR, rejected mates, enemies to lovers, plenty of spice...give this a try!

Amora saw Kian get dragged into the shadow realm. Amora, Frost and Malix have every intention to go and get him back.
This was a pretty good ending to this series. I really liked the fact that all 3 prophecies came true. I thought that was a clever bit of writing from Rose.

While there is truly not much more character development going on, the plot makes it appear that they are growing and changing but really it is just that they are responding to situations that are forced upon them. For instance, Amora says tear open the shadow realm, they do what she says. It is just a literally response, not growth. But ok, the last one does reflect a little growth since they refuse to tear a hole in reality even if that means they will all be killed. I guess this shows some personal growth on the part of the men.

As far as the spice goes, all but 2 times it is very vanilla with a smatter of spankings. The books start out with very little spice but by the final book the spice is pretty much a constant.

The violence in the final book is a bit more in terms of lengthy battles. However I don’t think it was any more or less violent. Actual humans do get attacked in this final book.

Again I do really like a satisfying conclusion and this definitely delivers. In fact the superb ending is the only thing that kept this book and this series from getting a 2 star review.

R- language. Violence. Sex.

Eh, not so much.

Since the author already knows the outcome she's aiming for, Amora's decision at the end I'm sure seems like a sensical decision to the author, but to a logical mind it makes no sense because the author's given us too little to believe in -- there are too many ifs. So, the witch, Gwen said she lied, but Amora has NO CLUE exactly what she lied about: was it about the guys opening the Veil, was it about the prophecy Gwen showed Quentin, was it the first prophecy Gwen showed Amora, was it the outcome she showed Quinton, the outcome she showed Amora--there are too many variables to for to make any confident sense to do what she decided to do. The end it became obvious that the author was not really developing the story as kind of expecting you to count on her for it to end okay, telling us rather than showing us. Trouble is, the whole point of stories is imagining yourself and the heroin or the villain or whatever and there'd be no way a rational person would make using the scant evidence provided would make Amora's decision. Consequently, Amora's decision to tear the veil seems fool hearty to the point of and was a stretch too far for me to go along with not to mention the whole thing was just sex mixed with dark and had two little everything. So it was fair but it wasn't great.

My feelings:

I loved this series. It's full of action and a good dose of smut.
I love the main Mcs! They manage to pull you in without trying.

“You saved me from a fate worse than death. You give me peace, and you accept me as I am,” he whispers. “I love you, Amora. You’re mine.”

Ok, mixed feelings.
I loved the series and wanted more. But I also feel like we could have wrapped it up in book 3 if it was made a little longer. I felt like this had some unnecessary stuff just to make a book 4.

“You have driven me up a goddamn wall every chance you got,” he tells me in a husky whisper, a small smile appearing on his lips. “And I’ve loved every fucking second of it.”

Still devoured the book but, and enjoyed the ride. Just wasn't the favourite out of the 4. Have read a few by Callie and I don't mind her Fantasy books, so far, so good!

“We found you, baby,” I murmur. “We’ve got you.” I hold her like I’m never going to let her go. And I won’t. She has my entire heart. Forever.

Highly Recommend.

New rating scale effective 3/24/2025
13–15 → 5⭐️ || 10–12 → 4⭐️ || 7–9 → 3⭐️ || 4–6 → 2⭐️ || 3 → 1⭐️

3⭐️: Good: Enjoyable read with some flaws.
3 🌶️: Medium Heat: Several intimate scenes, moderately explicit.
2🔪: Moderate: mild violence or unsettling, but not too graphic.

there is some fighting, and scrapes, but nothing gory and disturbing.

took awhile to finish the book. kind of lost interest for a bit, but then i was like, im almost done with the series, go ahead and get it over with.

it ends with a HEA. and a "maybe baby" ... they were still in the "trying" phase. IYKYK what i mean.

i feel like the 4 books dragged on and on , and then suddenly, boom bam, end of book. wrapped up all nice and perfect.

also would have liked it better if there were more "together" scenes. maybe like her and two or all 3. it seemed more 1 vs1 or taking turns, but not "together" if that makes sense.

anyway. this will probably be a book(series) that doesnt hold or stick in my mind, and it will pop back up on my FYP and i'll be like "oo that sounds good" and then come back here and put it on my " to read" only to realize its already "been there read that" - then be "welp never mind then" moving on down the list to the next.

Malix is the best

Ok so one thing I didn’t like about this series is how there isn’t explanations of like, anything. I mean we know a little of the how and why with Quinton and the stone but there is nothing on how he figured out who to do any of it or the stuff he does later. Then all the Shadow Realm stuff is based on guesses and observations. I mean I get that some times explaining the magic can either be hard to figure out or slows the pace down but for them to not be able to find any real information and then just kind of instinctually know what to do at the end was, idk annoying?

Anyway what I enjoyed about the book and the series as that there isn’t a hierarchy. I don’t think authors intend to do it but the fmc always gives me time and energy to one of the guys and the other harem members make one guy seem like the primary mate. I LOVE that doesn’t happen here. There is a real effort to show that her guys are different and her relationship with each guy is different but all equal.

I have noticed that Rose’s series tend to stall out by the end for me so I’m happy that didn’t happen this time. Overall this was an enjoyable read and a good series.

I felt like there were a lot of loose ends and questions that weren't answered.

Firstly, did Amora get a shadow wolf form since she ended up being part shadow?

Secondly, were the guys still in pain from their shadows and did Amora inherit that pain when she became part shadow? Or did the bond heal them?

Thirdly, the series touched on the bond and their related powers, like when Amora helped Frost with his extra shadows. Then they use the bond in the shadow realm to find Kian, but there was no explanation as to why the bond granted them that power or even why they only held a sliver of the power they seemed to wield when they were fully bonded; plus, the new powers showing up at the most opportune time felt forced.

Because of a lack of clarity, the group's binding didn't seem all that important. It didn't seem different from when they told each other they loved each other, so I was kinda confused why only one side had to say "I accept you as my mate" to complete the bond. Was it because they tried to break it? There wasn't much explanation.

Moreover, I thought there were too many sex scenes in this books. It got in the way of the plot.

During a one night stand with a shifter named Kian, Amora, realizes that she has met her mate. They fall asleep and when she wakes up the next morning, she finds him and all of his belongings gone.
The book fast forwards to 2 years later and continues Amoras journey. We find out that she is told by a witch that she has not just one mate, but three. She was also told that they would bring on the end of the world. Her hatrid for what the shifter/her mate did to her on top of the fact that her mates would be the end of the world, she set out to find and kill them.
Though her main goal was to end them, something more transpires between the four mates. Many ups and downs, twist and turns, and highs and lows. Will the mates end the world or will she fall instead? I will say that the ending of book 4 gave me instant goosebumps.

I figured it was best to just dnf this when I was skipping pages.
The plot, characters, storytelling, all of that was great, and I would've kept going. Where I started to have trouble was when the character chose to have sex.
Being hunted by a pack that's trying to kill them? Time for sex.
One of our pack has been taken to the shadow world and is possibly dead? Time for sex.
We got our pack member back and are racing against an evil alpha to reach another pack to warn them? TIME FOR SEX!!!!
Made it to pack to warn them and are waiting on pins and needles for evil alpha and his evil pack members he created? FOURSOOOMMMMEEEEE.

I'm all for a good dick-me-down smut filled reverse haram. But like, there's a time and place. It got to the point where if they weren't running, they were fucking. It got SO predictable and repetitive.

This is the final book in the Feral Shifters series which has followed Amora and the three shadowborn wolves Kian, Malix and Frost.

There's no gentle introduction, your instantly flung into the middle of the action and I liked that the storm was in your face from the off.

The rest of the book ebbed and flowed between being fraught with danger and trying to rescue something or someone. Inbetween the high tension is time for wolfy loving.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, but for me personally I wanted a little more character development. Don't get me wrong its still an amazing conclusion to their story and more than worthy of the four stars I'm giving this I just wanted a little more so I could of given it five stars.

Audiobook Review:

A strong finish for a great series. Callie Rose has brought readers another highly entertaining RH series with this one. I’ve come to really love these types of books from her and this series was a perfect example of why. She gives you well developed characters with their own personality and their own contributions to the relationship. She takes time to showcase each bond as well as how they are all perfect together as a unit. I liked how the overall conflict was resolved and how there were some moments of happiness shown after everything was said and done giving the whole thing a real sense of closure.
The narration was everything I’ve come to look forward to with Lia Holland. Once again she did not disappoint.

Holy Shit that was so good.
I really didn't want it to end. But that ending, I really didn't see that ending coming!!!!
I mean come on, the prophecies actually came through!!!
I thought for sure them destroying her was them breaking the bond, but I guess not.
Quentien's end was good, but IDK I thought it would go WAYYY different. I figured she would shove him through the rip and let him try to survive in the wasteland he wanted access to so bad. BUT then again that would've given him a chance to survive and find a way back, so I get it.
This was just such a good series. The smut was so damn good and the plot / story line was just UGH <3
Loved it !!

Claimed Mate starts right where the previous book ended. Any oh boy was this book crazy intense. Action-packed with tons of unexpected reveals this book was the perfect ending to this wild series. Amora and the guys cement their relationship, create new allies and encounter old enemies. The climax of this story was unexpected and gripping. I didn't want to stop listening until the end and wanted even more of the HEA. Claimed Mate is a fantastic conclusion to an amazing series.

Fitting Conclusion

I loved how the story progressed and ended...it picked up right where book 3 left off, which makes it a challenge if you wait too long in between. Amora and her men pull on your heart strings as they are constantly trying to save one another. Everyone develops even more and I love that open feeling with them all. You get the story and the steam. Now for the adventure of picking up the next book. I am happy to see a mini book now so yay! Enjoy this series because I did. Perfect mixture of everything I was looking for.
