Jessica Stevens Nicole Walker. Tineke Ziemer.
From the 'Cracks' by David Tensen it's the cracks on the road to wholeness you have to watch for the novice avoids them, scuttling with speed across the bitumen hoping to reach a promised land without tripping but the wise slow down knowing the road has no end the wise have learnt the cracks are the way forward going down into the narrows where seeds fall
Australian poet David Tensen brings form and beauty to our deep spiritual yearnings. Drawing from decades of experience in pastoral care and spiritual development, his poems have found their way into hearts of every age across the globe. Raw, honest, accessible and prophetic, David's writings both uncover pain and bring healing to it.
I was introduced to David Tensen’s poetry last year, and immediately bought both of his poetry books and drank them like a person who has stumbled on a oasis in a desert. When I found out that he was publishing a new book of poetry that featured not only his poetry but of other poets from his Poetry Chapel project I was excited and intrigued.
My expectations were high, and this book exceeded my expectations. This book is beautiful. The poetry, yes—but it is even more than that. David Tensen is not only using his gift—his voice to bless us, the readers, but here in -The Saving I Need- we see him using his gift to help empower others to step into the gift of their own voice, and we are doubly blessed. In a world, that teaches scarcity and that there is not enough to go around.
Grateful to David Tensen and grateful to all the featured poets, for their courage, for their vulnerability—for giving us the gift of their voice.
This book is an example of spring of abundance that is born when we use our voice, gifts, and power to encourage and empower others. This book gives me hope for a humanity that instead of moving from a sense of scarcity and fear, moves from that sense of love and abundance—as earth as it is in heaven, and it feels a lot like home.
As one of the featured poets Jessica Stephens writes, “A bright new future is near. It. Is. Here.”
Poetry it seems to me has always been a place of liminal dreamlike space. Space where my mirror neurons light up the words into my body and I get to feel what you, the poet feels for a moment. A place where we get to look in wonder through the of a jeweller and see the small shiny facets of a diamond that the writer has chosen to highlight. Glittering.
This delightful new poetry collection by poet and leader David Tensen and the 14 new emerging writers is the perfect companion to your morning coffee, your afternoon tea, or your evening hot chocolate.
Nuzzle your nose into a journey, a question, a memory, a sensation. Here are people finding the beauty in brokenness, in doubt, in transition, in the process of creating a book through community and collectivity. “The Saving you need” is poetry from a group of honest new voices distilling into a form what we may think about in moments or years of searching and musing.
Reading it is an exercise of both joy and self-healing. Thank you for letting me share the journey.
I had purchased and read David Tenson’s other two poetry books and found that his honesty, empathy and vulnerability had delivered insights, wisdom and healing to a weary soul in a way no other poetry had. I was excited by the thought of more of his work yet almost fearful of being disappointed by the inclusion of the other poets’ work. I need not have worried, for the entire book is an awe-inspiring expression of David’s work and a tribute to his mentoring these new artists who have produced some stunning poems. Trauma, pain, grace, humour, irony and authenticity fill the pages while the truth and warmth of the honest and compassionate words not only soothe but also challenge us to unlock doors, expose hidden wounds, seek quietness and accept eternal love; relinquishing the weariness of carrying our heavy burdens, hiding them for fear of what their exposure might bring. I believe this book will encourage everyone, everywhere and make a wonderful gift. A must for all poetry lovers.
Poetry has long been a window to the soul and a profound act of worship; it’s no wonder the Psalms have been beloved for centuries. - "The Saving I Need" is a testament to the value of poetry. Thank you to David Tensen for bringing together this beautiful collection of poems from members of The Poetry Chapel. There is a richness in hearing the voice and mind of not only a seasoned poet, but of 14 new and emerging writers who are seeking after authentic communication through the art of poetry. The result of such a collection of works is a snapshot into the heart of those who are finding beauty in brokenness, peace in doubting, truth in questioning, and approval in imperfection. - From the very first poem, a meditation on “Feeding God” as Mary did when she nurtured the baby Jesus, my heart was challenged and moved in deep, meaningful ways. These are words to chew on, meditate over, and re-read again and again. - So, grab a cup of tea, cozy up with a blanket, and let your soul be fed by “The Saving I Need.”
I had never heard of or read anything by David Tensen before reading this collection. I think that is best because just as the Poets Collective pieces at the back, thy stiles were all new to me. I have enjoyed many of the poems in this collection, Piss Off, Perfection and That Flame are among my favorite written by Tensen himself. I highlighted and felt the depths of at least one poem by each of the Collective as well. Grief Echoes, by Tineke Ziemer. I Have a Friend in Anger, by Nicole Walker. Self-Love, by Jessica Stevens. The Swifts, by Jessica Mussro. The Kiss, by Franki. Saturday, by Victoria Kuttainen. Fire and Rain, by Kaelan Kiernan. Learning Grace, by Matthew Hardy. Nearer or Farther, by Nicole Fisher. Subtle, by Kara Chidlow. Cascades, by Carly Capiro. Baptism, by Brian Bucks. Fragments, by Abigail Bucks. and Weeping for Hemingway, by Andrew Charles Adair. To me, the careful crafting of each of these pieces is apparent. The love, desire for growth, the need for answers, and acceptance are ripe and beautiful. Altogether a wonderful collection.
As I opened the first pages and read the dedication to “those who refuse to settle on the surface” already I felt that tug on my heart strings, confirming that this book is special.
Reading my way through the poems, I feel a connection with these writers. How can so many voices be relateable. But then in the vulnerability, pain and joy, how can I read it and not be moved.
What brought me to these pages was the ethos of how this book was formed. As I’ve become exasperated by leadership that calls us lay down one’s life to serve their vision, David is a refreshing change, using his platform and experience to share with emerging poets, thinkers and creators. This is something I wanted to get behind.
What made me stay in the pages was the raw vulnerability, and the careful choice of words to convey their experiences, struggles and delights. As these poets share their experience of being human, I see myself walking with them. Recognising a kindred spirit in the words I digest.
This book has touched my heart deeply. The words were so poignant that I'd literally have to put the book down to process the emotions before picking it up again! This is a collection that has something for everyone - no matter your age or stage in life. The words capture the deepest emotions with surety, but leave room for transformative mystery! I have long enjoyed David Tensen's words, but he has given readers a rare gift by putting all of these different voices together and sharing them with the world!
I highly recommend buying a copy for yourself and additional copies to share! This is a book that wants to be gifted - because it contains many gifts within its pages!!
The strength of this book is, I think, the undertaking that created it. David Tensen has reshaped poetry into a ministry by mentoring this group of early creatives and giving them a place in which to open up and shape these ideas and complex topics they're working through in a caring community. Accordingly I think these poems shift away from the usual conception of poetry; they don't cater to elite or academically snobby ideas of poetry and while I'll never let go my T.S. Eliot, I can't help thinking it's a very good thing to reclaim poetry to do what Tensen and the Poetry Collective do: work out, in condensed language suitable for anyone to read, what it means to be human beings and people of faith. The questions the poets grapple with are questions we all will recognize.
Read this book through in one sitting , yet had to stop, after each poem, to right lines which were impacting me and had to think for a moment why! The stirring of deep emotion and the sheer artistry of the words as well as the honesty and vulnerability expressed evoked the need to linger longer over certain words and phrases. David Tensen's generosity of spirit spills out in his sharing of skills to those he mentors and the results are plain for all to see. As each emerging poet retains their own identity yet carries the same capacity to reach the soul through integrity and transparency which also transports the mind to new dimensions of expression and delight. A book I will return to again and again and again.
David Tensen has a way of looking at things from unusual angles, and raising thoughts I’d never considered but which I discovered I agree with him.
The Saving I Need is not only a great book because of David’s creative work, but also the Poetry Chapel where his generosity allows both fans and newcomers of his writing to discover an exciting collection of new poets.
When life offers that spare moment you can pick up this great coffee table book and read something uplifting or thought provoking, and the variety it holds is so spacious it’s inevitable you’ll find a connection with one of the poets contained inside
The Saving You Need is like a long exhale breath- exposing, illuminating and resonating truths within the graceful and eloquent framework of poetry. I found it particularly beautiful to hear a tapestry of voices weaving their poems together into a unified whole. Poems echoing and giving voice to the deep yearning song inside all of us to know, make our homes in and rest in the spacious dance of oneness with the Divine and with the whole cosmos.
I can safely say that it’s been 10 years since I’ve read any form of poetry but man has this book blown me away. The collection of poems from these talented poets have pulled at my heart string as well as made me think. The poem Scoll On by Nicole Fisher, is one I want to frame and read every single day. I highly recommend giving this book a read whether your into poetry or just looking for a good read that may even make you think and reflect on your own thoughts and opinions.
I haven't come across a more vulnerable collection that best embodies the phrase beauty for ashes. Each author drops the facard on what can, or should be said and thought. Then bolsters the courage to honestly share their hearts. Warts and all. Like a thick cup of dark hot chocolate, I'd recommend enjoying this book slowly, and savoring the rich bitter sweetness on every page.
From the 1st page I knew this was going to be one of my favorite reads. So far, I’m savoring every poem. It’s like warm cocoa for my heart ❤️. I’ve just recently begun enjoying poetry, and it is books like this that have sparked the new passion. . I love the refreshing waves of grace that pour out of the verses.
Poetry is so beautiful, and I love that these come from a place of wonder, grief, hurt, pain, joy, and thankfulness, through a lens of faith. These poems give words to things we hardly know how to describe. They are very much a form of healing and a gateway to beauty. This collection is also brilliant because of its incorporation of other upcoming authors!
It's hard to pick a favourite from the lustrous deeps of these poems. But Cast Upon Waters and Strangers, The Call and those extraordinary lines from Andrew Charles Adair's Hibernation: "throne and love-seat where lion and lamb rest together in nativity and sonship" echo deep within deep.
This collection of poems explored life and faith and both challenged my thinking and reassured me of the possibility of hope all around us. It was great. I particularly liked the works of David, Franki and Nicole Walker. This anthology is one for the home library, for sure.
This is a really great collection of poetry. I wish it was used as a school text as these poems made me think about what I believe to be true and the sort of person I want to be. Absolutely 5 stars.
Gorgeous. Inspirational. I bought this book as I have read Nicole Walker's poetry before and wanted to read more, but the whole collection is fantastic. Highly recommended to poetry lovers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There’s something here for everyone to take away, no matter what kind of words you need at the time. Do yourself a favour - get your copy today!
This is a collection of beautifully crafted, heartfelt poems that go to the core of its very apt title. The title poem exquisitely illuminates the human quest to come to know our true selves. Several poems speak of the struggle to keep going in the face of adversity, and the peace in finding the help one needs. I particularly like Nicole Walker's concept in her poem 'Friendship' of how friendship helps one to 'refuse the fading.' The collection of poems also touch on joy, peace and grace, and do so in a relatable way. Not only is the book full of lovely poetry, but it WALKS the TALK of its philosophy: in engaging emerging authors and bringing them into the 'fold' so to speak, David Tensen is showing and being the community and collaboration that he stands. Its a wonderful collection.
