A Suffragette in Time

Rate this book
A compelling time travel historical

Thrown back in time to the 1850s, Sarah Burns transforms herself into a suffragette. But traveling the speaking circuit can be risky in a time when men believe a woman’s place is in the home. It can be downright dangerous when she shares the stage with anti-slavery activists whose fiery rhetoric triggers violence.

Her uneasy alliance with an arrogant abolitionist may be heading toward romance, but it’s a bumpy road with perilous obstacles, including slave hunters intent on kidnapping anyone they can sell down south. Living with a family operating a station on the Underground Railroad doesn’t make life any easier.

A Suffragette in Time is a fast-paced time travel story set against the backdrop of one of the most acrimonious periods in American history, as the fight over slavery escalates toward the American Civil War. Danger, romance and one woman’s personal battle to make the world a better place.

In January of 2010, a bus carrying a group of high school students arrives at the Hammond House Museum. On board is Sarah Burns, a 17-year-old history buff, dying to see an actual stop on the Underground Railroad. Her wish of meeting some of the pioneers of the abolitionist movement, like William Still, Lucretia Mott, and Harriet Tubman, is granted in a way that changes her life forever.

Sarah unwittingly passes through a time portal and is transported back to 1846. All hope of returning to the life she knows, the people she loves, soon disappears. She is trapped in a world where she has no friends and none of the technology on which she had depended. There are no cell phones, no cars or televisions, no indoor plumbing, no toothbrushes other than birch twigs. But she is fiercely independent and she will learn to adapt.

Seven years later, she has become a teacher and a champion of women’s rights, speaking on lecture tours alongside her abolitionist crusaders. But these are dangerous times. The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 allows ordinary citizens to kidnap and sell people they accuse of being runaway slaves, without any real evidence to prove their accusations.

Author Lacy shines a light on one of the darkest periods of American history, just prior to the Civil War. Not just Sarah, but the reader, too, is transported back to an era when women were treated as inferior to men in every respect, and black people were cruelly abused as property, objects to be bought and sold. What might have been dry pages of historical fiction in the hands of a lesser writer are transformed into a riveting tale of courage and triumph in the face of almost insurmountable odds. We see, feel (and smell!) what it was like to live in the mid-1800s.

The writing is engaging and superbly edited. The characters are authentic. Were I a high school teacher, I would make this book required reading for my American history students. This story of love and hate, hope and despair, speaks a powerful message to our own troubled times. Thank you, Ms. Lacy.

4.5 Stars. Another entertaining time travel novel from Connie Lacy, this one set in the United States when black slaves and American women were struggling for freedom and equality under the law. Lacy is so careful and exacting in her research that I came away feeling I'd learned a lot about so many aspects of life for women in the 1850s and the perils and heroism involved in helping slaves find freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Actual rating 4.5 ⭐ rounded up. I have a few mixed feelings but overall this was very enjoyable.

I read this in two sittings, and only because it got late when I read it. I’m still having a few thoughts and feelings about this book. I had fun reading it, it was entertaining and dropped a couple historical names I didn’t immediately recognize and several I did (Harriet Tubman anyone?). I liked a lot of the references throughout from book titles to historical figures to how clothes were made. It was a good read.

I know this won’t be for everyone. It not only tackles women’s rights but it’s also very heavy on racism. It’s got several scenes that I found a bit far fetched-surprisingly, not the time travel though the way that was handled made me clap to the author as that was a clever idea I’d not seen yet. Very well done! I’m still thinking over this book, and am definitely interested in reading more. I think there’s at least two others linked with this one and the author has other books as well I may give a try. This was rather good, and I’m happy to have received an arc from the publisher on Netgalley. Thank you!

5 Star Review from Readers' Favorite

Sarah Burns is fascinated with the Hammond House Museum. She’s on a school trip learning about the Underground Railroad and this museum’s role in helping slaves escape to the north and freedom. What fascinates her most is the tiny hiding space where the former slaves are hidden until it’s safe to move on. She devises a plan to stay after the class leaves and ventures alone into this hidden room. That’s when things shift and Sarah finds herself in the 1850s, alone, frightened, and not understanding where she is, why she’s there and how she can return to her own time and her grandfather, who must be frantic not knowing what’s happened to her. But time in the 1850s progresses and the Hammonds accept her as one of them, with no questions asked. Sarah becomes a suffragette speaker and, in the process, meets conflicting opinions and wards off unwanted attention. She still misses her own era and her grandfather. Will she ever find her way back to the future? And what will she discover if she does go back?

Connie Lacy’s time travel novel, A Suffragette in Time, is a fast-paced, historical fiction fantasy. Taking the ‘what if’ scenario, the author allows the protagonist, Sarah, to experience life in the present as well as the past. The author knows her history and the realism of both time periods is accurately depicted; the differences between the two eras are well documented. Descriptive narrative and dialogue are well constructed in a compelling plot that leads the reader right into the story and keeps them enraptured to the very end. The jumps between eras flow easily and the reader will have no difficulty in following the plot in each era. The place of women and black people in society is the main focus as Sarah stands up for what she believes is right and wrong in both eras. Book clubs will appreciate this book as there are lots of viable points that will inspire lengthy discussions amongst the members. A fascinating and engaging read.

Connie Lacy writes time travel novels that are exciting and emotional. The reader becomes attached to the well described characters and by the end of the story you feel as though you’ve made some friends.

She researches the time in the past that her traveller goes back to and describes the events with such a clarity that the reader is also transported to the past.

Set in the 1850’s this story includes not only the suffragette movement’s activities but also that of the slave abolitionists. Not only is this a wonderful read but it is also a fascinating look into the history of the time.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy a well written social history story.

I enjoy time travel stories and this is right up there with the best of them. I like the way the author went back-and-forth between the two time periods and you were able to follow them both without a problem. The characters are so inviting and warm that I wanted to be right there with them. This is a new to me author and I will be looking for more of her books. If you like history you will love this story.

Got this book from Voracious Readers Only for an honest review.

If you like a non-cliche romance and socially relevant historical fiction, this book is a must read.

The story is set in Philadelphia when Sarah Burns accidentally travelled through time by crawling down the secret room that was used to hide runaway slaves in the Hammond House Museum. She lived among the people in the past for 7 years as part of the Hammond family while advocating for women’s rights. She again accidentally travelled in time to 2017, 7 years after she disappeared and although she missed her family in the past, she had to get used to the noise and crowd. Her granddad made a remark about the nights she disappeared and the night she called him to pick her up in the gas station near the Hammond House Museum, and they both made a conclusion.

The book was well written and gave me a good look on how life in the 1850s was like for the Hammonds, the runaway slaves and the fight towards their freedom. It was full of adventure for our heroine Sarah Burns while silently building a love story that runs embedded on the original plot. Although slavery has been long gone, the book is sure to remind us that racism is still rampant and that we need to do something about it. This enlightened me about the history of slavery in America as in the Philippines, we had our own history of oppression where our countrymen were forced to be slaves to our colonizers. This book will always be cherished in my heart.

Although this talks about the advocacy for women suffrage, I’m still a romance junkie and I loved how Sarah’s husband proposed to her: “Sarah, I have loved you from the first day I set eyes on you. It is your face I see when I imagine making a home and having a family. I admire you and delight in your unconventional ways. You make me want to be a better man. You make me think. You make me laugh. And I can’t imagine life without you. Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

Connie Lacy – A Suffragette in Time – Reviewed 10/28/21 – Read 10/26/21

Sarah fights for the rights of women after landing in 1846!

A young teenaged Sarah is fascinated with the Hammond House and joined the tour with her high school group, but she wanted to explore on her own so she talked her teacher into letting her stay as the class returned to school, saying that her grandfather would be picking her up. After they left, she wandered through the house, enjoying the many different rooms, when no one was looking she headed back down into the cellar where the secret room was located.

Moving the cupboard's back panel, then opening the cabinet doors, she crawled through the hidden doorway to the secret room. As she stood up, she felt like something was very different, suddenly she felt as if all the blood had drained out of her legs. Sitting on the cot, it was certainly dark, so she pulled out her phone and turned on the light. It seemed like it was different from before, so she decided that it was time to leave, and the museum was closing soon so she needed to call her grandfather. As she climbed out, she noticed that it too was different in the cellar, and someone was coming down the stairs with a lantern in her hand and the story begins!

Join Sarah as she travels back to 1846 and joins the Suffragette campaign for women’s rights…

What did I like? From the first page, I felt fully involved in the storyline. It was so easy to read, and Sarah was such a great character, a typical teenager. As the time passed and she realized that she would not be able to return to 2010, it was enjoyable to follow her growth. Then it certainly got exciting when she joined the Suffragette group and started on the speaking tours.

What will you like? Connie has a way with her writing that draws the reader not only into the storyline but into the character. This book is a perfect example of that. Her storyline is spot on in the timeline and the fight for both slavery and women’s rights. Her characters were superb with each coming to life with her details and descriptions. You will be in for a treat because there is so much more happening in this book besides the fight for both rights, in addition, Sarah has her hands full with the men of the time, not wanting to give an inch for the women’s rights, even to some violence! Add a little romance to the mix and you have a perfect read! Be sure to add Connie Lacy’s new time travel book “A Suffragette in Time” to your reading queue, it is available today!!!

Sarah Burns is a woman out of time. Specifically she was a high school student in 2010 on a field trip and somehow got transported back in time to the 1850’s. She wished for a chance to see what it was really like not just the museum version and her wish came true, giving much credence to the saying be careful what you wish for. Now she works diligently as a teacher and as a suffragette working to earn the rights she took for granted. She makes friends the family whose house becomes a museum adopts her. She adjusts to life in the past even if she doesn’t like it some times. She’s given up hope of ever going back to her time then a fluke occurrence takes her back. Sarah has mixed emotions she wonders what those she cared for will think. When her grandad notices she is not adjusting that she’s not happy he encourages Sarah to return to the past and the life where her heart is. She returns to both joy and turmoil. Two friends arrested the trial to prove they’re slaves reunites her with her childhood friend and suitor Benjamin.
There is so much that happens in this story it’s hard to write a review without giving out massive spoilers that would ruin the experience for others. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read without question. It is a poignant, compelling, action packed accounting of two times in history centuries about that are not quite as different as we would all have hoped. Time travel is secondary to the truly compelling story of a young woman who is transported to the past and finds a home, her voice and strength and a cause worth fighting for. I strongly urge you to read this book, a story wonderful beyond words.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.

Sarah Burns is a typical 17 year-old high schooler in 2010. What is different is she is a history buff! So when her high school went to the Hammond House Museum, she was beside herself. She convinced her teacher to leave her behind and her grandfather would pick her up. Sarah snuck back into the hidden room in the museum and was transported back to the 1850's. Sarah leaves the room and is immediately greeted by the owners - the Hammonds. They believe that she is a runaway slave trying to escape, but cannot figure out how she got into the room without them seeing her.

As she makes peace with her new life, she becomes a suffragette. She goes on the speaking circuit to promote women's rights and shares stages with anti-slavery activists - which sometime causes violence.

This novel is a great ride - one where Sarah needs to decide which century she wants to continue her life in.

This is my first book by this author - I will be looking for more!

3.5 stars out of 5.

A Suffragette in Time is an enjoyable read that centres around a young lady who finds herself stuck in 1850s America. Though there are some romantic elements, the core of this book focuses on the suffragette and abolitionists movements of the time. The 'magic' of time travel is not delved into but there are moments of excitement interspersed between the familiar, mundane comfort of a historical fiction.

Connie Lacy has a wonderful writing style and touches upon the less romantic realities of time travel - the discomforts of past fashion, frustrations of inequalities and struggles in acclimating to a new life. I would recommend A Suffragette in Time if you are after a clean, enjoyable read that touches upon some serious and topical issues of the past (and present).

I was drawn to this one by the time travel element. I've not read this author before, but it was a lovely introduction to her writing.
Although time travel is definitely part of the story, it does focus on the women's suffragette movement, but more particularly on the American slave situation, freed slaves and their rights and fight for freedom. I'm not American myself, so a very large part of the story and its background was unfamiliar to me, but it does seem to mention historical figures which are no doubt well known by American readers.
I read this one in a couple of sittings. The story drew me in and had me wanting to see what would happen to Sarah next, as well as the other main and side characters.

I thought this book was well written and was a spin on normal time travel stories. This book pretty much started back in time with flashbacks to the past/future on how Sarah traveled back in time.
The story told of the attitudes of slavery, the Fugitive Slavery Act and women’s rights including the interesting reflection on current perceptions in 2017.
The book was written well and I enjoyed the characters. I felt the ending seemed to rush through very quickly - it was certainly a different pace to the start and middle of the book
Definitely recommend this book for historic time travel and pre US civil war fans. Also will be interested in reading other books by this author.

I love time travel books, especially when they have some basis in reality. What I found very interesting in this one was the detailed descriptions of the culture shock between a modern, leggings-wearing young lady being suddenly thrust into a house on a stop of the Underground Railroad. Although women's suffrage didn't actually happen until many decades later, I found the beginnings of the movement interesting. Some of the dramatic action got a bit tedious, but overall, I liked the book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was such a surprise, I throughly enjoyed it. This book covered some serious issues and struggles from the days of slavery in America, but also follows the life of a young lady who has been thrust into this world of constraints and rules. The story was heaped with high intensity chapters which kept me hooked all the way, and the love interest was a nice slow build, which I really enjoy. Over all, I extremely enjoyed this book.

4.5 stars. This combined my love of time travel with my love of historical fiction. A couple of turns I didn't see coming; a couple of turns that were predictable. Overall, quite a good read, and once I was past the mid-point, it became unputdownable. (Is that a word?)

Sarah Burns finds that she has travelled back in time and is now in the 1850s. She immerses herself into the time and tries to hold onto her more modern view as much as possible. She becomes an active feminist lecturer and goes on tours to lecture halls and talks. She talks alongside others wishing to abolish slavery in America.

This isn’t a book I would have chosen if browsing on my Kindle. I got the opportunity to read this thanks to Veracious Readers and it sounded interesting, and it was! Sarah is a likeable character, and you want her to do well, and we feel her frustrations as she fights for women’s rights in a time where not many wanted to listen.

Despite this, I found elements of this book problematic. Racism is also another heavy and prominent theme within the novel, and I don’t believe it was badly handled but potentially clumsy. We see Sarah marrying the man she states at the beginning she had no interest in marrying and does not end up with the man we as readers expect her to end up with. Typically, the man she does not end up with, we find out, was born a slave despite his white skin.

I found it strange that she ended up with the almost ‘safe’ option and there was a lot of white saviour scenarios playing out. I don’t believe it was done intentionally or with any agenda in mind, but it was something that stuck with me.

Overall, it is a very interesting read, and I would read another book by Connie Lacy. She has a lovely way of telling a story!

Good

This is a good time travel story. The person who travels travels back in time to the 1800 before the Civil War. She gets involved in civil rights of Black Americans and women. Good history about the early pioneers in these issues.
