"I don't care if he breaks me in two. I'm not budging. He'll have to break down the door to get to me".

The Caging at Deadwater Manor by Sandie Will

Wow. I finished this book the other day. This is one of the most bone chilling, freaky, dark, disturbing books I have read this year. If you choose to read this, keep in mind that calling it "dark" does not do it justice.

So this book I personally would categorize as horror with a bit of Gothic thrown in. The plot concerns a young girl named Jeannie whose mom drowned tragically many years ago.

For some reason, her dad has turned against her. He has turned dark and morose and repeatedly and viciously calls Jeanie a "liar" and also calls her horrible names.

Jeanie is lost and lonely. Her only solace is that soon she will be 18 and when that day comes she is leaving this town..forever.

Not so fast.

When her birthday rolls around, she is asked to do a favor. To accomplish this, she needs t o go to Deadwood Manor.

Not much is known about this old and ominous institution. It is reported that perfectly sane people
are kept prisoner there but nobody really knows for sure.

Jeanie goes there to do this favor..she intends only to stay a short time.

Until she realizes she cannot leave.

You see, her father has had her committed. And she is tricked into signing the papers herself. In a state of horror, Jeanie is kidnapped into the darkness of the institution which threatens to swallow her soul.

And to say unethical things go on is putting it mildly. This book is "One flew over the Cukoos nest" on speed. Horrible things happen and frankly I started to really get skeeved out and had to skim.

The good..there is a compelling and heartfelt story in here. The author has a note where she explains how she came to write this.

Also good.Jeanie is feisty and tough and of coarse wants to escape. I liked her greatly. Her tale is one of angst and sadness that will stick with people.

What I did not like..could not like..was the sheer brutality that went into this book. And at times it was to over the top in a very non believable way. I never got any insight on why these people would work there or do this stuff. In Stephen King's "The institute" we are given motivations but not here. That is my biggest negative. That and also that the book is way to dark to be at all entertaining even mildly. It is not a pleasant read though it is a powerful one.

My rating is three stars. Recommended to people who like dark..very dark..Gothic Horror and young adult fiction.

Jeannie lost hearing in one ear and since mother died her father has treated her like hell. If not for Rick, her brother she would be insane. He is her support. On her 18th birthday her father surprises her with a new car! She is shocked but not as surprised as he is when he sees she has a license already. Now she can make plans to be free! Her dad tells her she needs to visit her aunt who has been put in an asylum for depression. Well, she doesn't tell anyone where she is going because she is ashamed that her aunt would be in THAT particular place. When she gets there to visit, she notices it is really rather nice looking. While she fills out the forms to visit her aunt, she decides maybe the rumors were wrong. It isn't long before she finds out how true they were and exactly how much her father hates her. Will she every get free? Or will they drive her insane? A fantastic debut novel. I liked the fact that author did not go the "sensational" route and instead gives just enough information for minds to fill in their own blanks. Mental illness has been treated so horribly for so long, perhaps because no one really knows why it happens. KUDOS!

This book is an absolute fantastic read!! I honestly can't believe the story it was so creepy and so good. There were times i wanted to throw my phone across the room, since i was reading this on my Kindle app. The way Sandie started this story, i thought well why is called this if it starts out somewhat happy? I think it was 3 or 4 chapters in that i got why the book was titled what it was and why it wasnt as happy as i was thinking. It definitely has some twists and turns that I wasnt expecting, especially at the end. If you love horror stories or just plan messed up creepy stories in general then I suggest reading this book

Holy Heck!

This book is intense! I'd classify this book somewhere between YA and NA, as the main character is subjected to some pretty intense situations.

This book sucker punches you in the gut, as you can only witness as 18 year old Jeannie is held captive in an insane asylum. Every word of every horror she is put through will stay with you.

And the ending, oh the ending... That's all I can say about that. Be prepared to be glued to the page. This is an amazing debut novel and I can't wait to find out what other stories Sandie Will has up lurking inside her!

There are no words that I can come up with other than intense, shocking, thrilling, and suspenseful. Loved this book!! If you like psychological thrillers you will like this novel. I didn’t see the unexpected twist in the end, either. I’m looking forward to reading more from Sandie Will. She’s on my list of followed authors for sure!

Absolutely awful.

Plot twists are like salt: add too much, and you spoil the meal. This story was completely unbelievable, and the author clearly did only the minimum of research.

Unreal! I couldn’t put this book down or read it fast enough. Each chapter left me longing to read more and find out if Jeannie will ever escape. The emotions she shares throughout the story are so intense and raw that it truly feels like you are there locked in the cage with her. We need a sequel to this!!!

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Author. I am very happy to have read it... It is not a book I would have chosen in a book shop on my own. The cover kind of freaks me out LOL.
LOTS of trigger warnings in the this book to prepare for... Also, just a very dark and uncomfortable book in general. 3.5 stars, rounded up... I honestly did not like the way this book made me feel. I attached myself to Jeannie so what she went through, I went through and it was ROUGH. I had to put down this book a few times. I love dark and twisty books but this one had NO LET UP, it was ALL just really perverted and sinister. I also saw the twist about her Mom, Dad and brother coming early on, so it wasn't a huge plot twist for me.
Again, glad to have read it and the ending was nice but I don't think this is a book I will read again just because it is so intense throughout the whole book!
Needed a little reprieve in there..

Good detail, yet horrifying story!

Interesting read! Will has a very good grasp on detail and using her words to immerse the reader into the events as well as allowing you to share the characters ' feelings. And the fact that something such as this is totally within the realm of possibility is chilling! Totally wasn't expecting
the ending!

This book kept me interested from start to finish. After finding out that it was inspired on true events, it made much more interesting that people can actually do this to a real human being. Jeannie is the main character. Her father is verbally abusive and hates her, especially when he drinks. Jeannie figures he hates her because her mother died by drowning when her car plunged off a cliff into a lake. Luckily she has her older brother who is helps her through the abuse.

On her 18th birthday, her father surprises her by buying her a yellow car. She instantly thinks this is some sort of trick, something he can give her and take back to add to the abuse. Her dad tells her that the only thing he asks is that she go see her sick aunt at Deadwater Manor, a local psychiatric hospital, the next day, so she does. After signing the paperwork for this 'visit', she finds out that she was tricked into signing herself into the hospital as a patient and her aunt was never there to begin with.

She is forced in a cage, abused, sexually assaulted, and drugged, along with the 'therapy' that is supposed to help her. The two nurses that take care of her are psychopaths. Jeannie loses track of time and is desperate to find someone to trust and an escape. She meets Christian, another patient, who says he is an undercover detective. (I admit that I was not sure I believed this at first. I thought this was his crazy mind making this up like Shutter Island.) Jeannie escapes her cage to read her chart. She confirms that her father is in fact behind this when she sees a copy of the admission check and that they intend to sterilize her. The only good thing about her stay at Deadwater Manor was that her memory of her mothers death all came back to her. Due to the shock after it happened, Jeannie blocked it out of her mind and made up a new story of how her mother died. This memory explains why her father hated her.

The ending was great. I did not see that coming at all. The person who was helping her keep it together was the person who was behind it all the entire time. The ending was so much better than what I thought was going to happen. Give this book a read...It's pretty good.

What can I say about "The Caging At Deadwater Manor" that it doesn't say for itself, for good or ill? It starts out with human interest, a bit sad, but then delves into the harrowing ordeal of a young girl's unfair incarceration in an asylum, with much pain, anguish and torment that doesn't seem to end. Even though it sometimes certainly feels that way, although it comes out well at last (I won't give away exactly how), there were times, and plenty of them, when I felt the main character of Jeannie's incarceration and torment, and flaming self-pity for it, didn't do the plot very much good. At other times, however, the story did move along, and we were all released, perhaps literally, from the main mood of the novel eventually. I'd recommend this to readers interested mainly in a young woman's improvisation in writing of a real human gulag, especially emotionally. Sandie Will has done a fine job, above all, and though bogged down at times, "The Caging" gives a real feel of injustice and retribution towards how free a young lady needs to be, especially having been based loosely on real events.

Why? Why did I read this book?!?
Inspired by true events, "The Caging at Deadwater Manor" made me cringe and stuck in my brain like a demented 90's pop song. Following Jeannie, who has already been through a crap life with a dead mother and verbally abusive father, as she is tricked into admission into the infamous Deadwater Manor, this eerie read will haunt you. Frantically searching for a soul she can trust in the hell of Deadwater, Sandie sets her mind to escaping the horrific "treatments" and constant sexual threats surrounding her.
The ending... it hit me particularly hard. I can't say more than that, but wow. I did not see that coming. Can we talk about making this into a Netflix series?
Because of the sensitive content, this book is mature YA and up. I liken it to Ellen Hopkins level content.
Through her powerful writing, Sandie Will reminds us all that the most feared monsters live inside of humankind.

Scary! Twisted! Amazing!
The Caging at Deadwater Manor is a sinister psychological thriller that penetrates the readers’ minds with a dark and twisted story about being betrayed by those closest to them. This book rips at one’s heart as the reader sits ringside in the life of an innocent young woman who endures horrific events. The reader enters into a nightmare of a reality that the main character Jeannie has to endure.

Jeannie is a strong and compelling character who is willing to fight for her freedom. The injustices that she faces cause the reader to empathize with her and to root for her to overcome the hellish life that she is living. This book will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they anxiously read through the story waiting for the next tragedy to unfold. This is a must read for those who like to be taken on dark and demented ride.

Sandie Will has written a crippling story about the miserable life of Jeannie Kynde, first at the hand of her narcissistic father and then during her stay at an insane asylum. The story starts sad enough, with her father making fun of her disability and calling her all manner of names, then it went into the unfair incarceration of eighteen year old Jeannie. What Jeannie had to endure during her months in captivity are enough to make one physically ill.

She never gives up, attempting to escape every chance she gets. Those attempts were frighteningly scary. It had me on the edge of my seat fearing for capture. But the biggest shock of all was yet to come, in the form of her brother, Rick. WOW, what a gut wrenching, nail-biting, knee-jerking read.

An intense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the protagonist to make it safely through to the end, and what an ending!! I didn’t see that coming!

Jeannie’s dad hates her and after years of mentally abusing her, contrives with the staff at Deadwater Manor, psychiatric hospital, to have her locked away.

What she suffers at their hands is harrowing, and almost breaks her, but she doesn’t give up hope, and with the help of another ‘patient’ they plan their escape.

This debut novel from Sandie Will is well written and engaging. It draws the reader in to share in Jeannie’s terror and frustration.

Knowing that this is a fictional story doesn’t stop the feeling that this has possibly happened, or could happen, to someone, somewhere!

I wanted to like this book so bad but the more I read it, the more I wanted to put this book down! I just couldn't because I was semi-invested in the story and what would happen. I should've just stopped! The dialogue throughout the whole book between the characters were EXTREMELY cringe. It was super unrealistic/unbelievable!

Let's NOT forget that one of the characters in the book was a detective?!? But in my mind, based off the dialogue, he sounded more like a child than an adult trying to handle things as a detective should! I am just so upset I wasted time on a book that was recommended. So please, read anything else but this.

Suspense is the keyword here

A young woman winds up accidentally signing herself in for psychiatric care after her evil father sends her to Deadwater Manor to visit an aunt. While there, she's kept in a cage in a hot attic. A very sad but true story. Because it might be fiction but these things have happened. Still happen. We've come a long way with psychiatry, but much more needs to be done and it's good to have page turners like this to remind us. A very well-written, well-paced novel with a likeable protagonist and chilling antagonists.

This was book that kept me captive thru to the end! The story is pretty gross thru most of it and is like a scary movie that you can't look at but cannot keep from l ooking!

It started out good but got rather gory but still keep be wanting to know what happens next! The end was pretty bazaar and not at all what I expected! I usually get free books but paid for this one! It does usually take me awhile to get thru a book but this one I read in 2 days!

Horror and Strength

Sometimes this book seems to be really over the top. On the other hand, I know from personal experience, that just a few less than professional 'professionals' combined with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed psychological issues can bring horrific consequences to the lives of vulnerable people. Add greed; societal taboos and prejudices to the mix... This is far from unthinkable. It takes enormous strength to break free of a corrupt system.

Disturbing, but really good!!! Clearly, since I read it in 2 days, I almost couldn’t put it down. The ordeal that the main character goes through is horrendous, and I felt so much anger towards the mean characters in the book. I would certainly read more by this author!
(Also, being from the Tampa, Florida area myself, I liked the fact that the author alluded to real Florida cities, like Tarpon Springs And Ft. Myers...for me personally, it helped me visualize the text even more)

Wow! This book did NOT stop from start to the end. This was a smart thriller that kept me guessing. I had a dislike for Nurse Delores akin to that of which I hold for Professor Umbridge. I kept wondering if Jeannie was hallucinating being kept in a cage due to her being doped up on medication. BIG twist involving her mother’s death, and her brother. Wow. Just wow! Can’t wait to read more from this author. Keep writing, Sandie!!

The way this book is written makes you feel like you are there with Jeannie, suffering right along with her. It was dark, creepy, and intense. I went on a roller coaster of emotions from feeling angry to feeling sad to feeling scared to feeling angry again. This is a fast paced read that will definitely keep your heart rate up. If you like psychological thrillers set in psych wards, this is a must read.

This book was very good from the beginning to the end. If makes you really wonder what goes on in those kind of mental hospitals. I dont want to say to much about it just read for yourself I am hoping the author makes up and follow up to the book to see what Jeanie will do with her life and if she meets up with her prior boyfriend and so forth

Horrifying story of truth

I can't say the main character was based in someone real but I can say this is a sadly accurate description of how insane asylums were run in the beginning. The treatments employed were real treatments they used at the beginning of psychiatric treatment history.

Scary that this book is based on true events.

I won this as an ebook from one of my Facebook groups. I wasn’t sure what to expect, I thought maybe it would be revealed that Jeannie had DID. It had me hooked, read it in less than 2 days. Looking forward to reading Sandie’s other books.
