Michael Moorcock's Elric #4

Elric Vol. 4: The Dreaming City

Rate this book

A really solid translation of the Michael Moorcock series. I hadn't read the previous books so some events may have been lost in me but this is some solid fantasy here. Good art as well.

once again it’s an interesting premise but it feels like nothing happens in these short graphic novels or the same thing happens over and over again. really liked the first couple but I really don’t know what the rest bring to the series or story overall.

Covers the same story that P. Craig Russell illustrated in 1982. It's quite a bit different so worth reading even if you're already familiar with the story in prose or comics.

That said I think this was the weakest of the 4 Blondel Elric books. The art isn't as strong and the story is a bit too condensed near the climax.

After the alternate path the previous volume took, I hoped for a more bold ending, sadly I hoped for too much. It went the safer route, stuck a bit too much with the source material in my opinion and tried to introduce a new element with Elric's sword (not going to say what). I am not sure I like it. If there is more coming our way I will give it a try!

I’m in general impressed by Titan Comics latest releases from Bloodborne, Blade Runner to this, i’m expanding my collection from them. Maybe you should too.

I was a bit skeptical at first. The classical artwork didn't please me much. I did get use to it even if I never truly like it. The story whoever was great! Simple but fun fantasy adventure and it truly did capture the essence of Elric. Well done!

A good translation of The Dreaming City. The artwork is very detailed and stands out. As does the colour palette. The only negative is some of the text was too small and often difficult to read.

"The city has not dreamed for a long time. Melnibonéans live as prisoners of their drugs and their illusions. Most of them don't even know if they're asleep or awake."

What a bloody end, and an immersive read, to Julien Blondel and Jean-Luc Cano's First Cycle: Melniboné. The art of Julien Telo made every page a joy to examine, especially the jungle ruins and the ocean chaos. That's not to say the characters weren't worth noting because they certainly were.

Too weak to live among his people, and too cruel for man's acceptance, Elric comes to see that

Razmere razaranja pa i obrt u samom okršaju nisu me uopšte dotakli ovde.

‘Elric: The Dreaming City’ is the fourth and final volume, for now, in this adaptation of Moorcock’s albino hero by writer Julien Blondel, co-author Jean Luc-Cano and artist Julien Telo. Like any serial, they are best read in the right order to avoid spoilers and confusion.
The saga continues. The Young Kingdoms are currently being ravaged by the forces of Melniboné who are looking for Elric to drag him back home. Unknown to the albino, his true love, Cymoril, now rules his people but she’s changed and despises him for his weakness and misguided compassion for the humans. Meanwhile, after his encounter with ancient Melnibonéan Emperor Saxif D’aan, Elric has decided to seek out R’lin K’ren A’a, the ancestral home of his people. In this quest, he will be aided by human adventurers Smiorgan Baldhead, Duke Avan and his crew who are keen to loot the lost city. En route, up a jungle river, they encounter Nuurc, an insect god, master of the million wings. Charmless Nuurc helps them find their destination but, as usual, things don’t go according to plan.

The story rolls along. I recall being very impressed by ‘The Dreaming City’ when I read the prose version and this does capture some of the magic. Not in the same way, but I’m older. I’m also less impressed with the character of Elric. If you had a sword that kept you alive but killed all your friends, every single one of them, would you keep it? The survival instinct is strong in all of us but this seems to take selfishness to new levels. I believe the sword is a metaphor for some other dependency, alcohol or drugs, which do indeed lead to self-destructive behaviour and can lose you all your friends and family. A terrible shame, of course, but it doesn’t make you a hero. Stormbringer does quite a lot of chatting in this episode which amuses me because writer guidelines for fantasy magazines often warn against talking swords. It’s been done!

Regrettably, the art here is not quite as magnificent as in previous volumes. ‘Volume One: The Ruby Throne’ had Robin Recht and Didier Poli doing the pictures and was stunning. ‘Volume Two: Stormbringer’ added Julien Telo to the team but I think Poli was less involved and it showed. ‘Volume Three: The White Wolf’ had Recht and Telo and it was still pretty good. The last one has only Julien Telo with Ronan Toulhoat helping out on storyboard and designs. Don’t get me wrong, the art is still damn good by general standards but comparatively, it seems to have slipped since Volume One. It also looks a bit rushed on the last pages. Deadline doom? According to their bios, all the creators have several projects on the go in film, television, animation and gaming.

The hardback edition is a quality product printed on fine paper with a foreword by Jean-Pierre Dionnet, co-founder of ‘Metal Hurlant’ magazine, and several pages of artist’s sketches at the back. It’s a collector’s item. It’s worth mentioning that there’s a boxed set of all four books coming out in September 2022 in case you don’t have any of them yet.

D’ailleurs, Stormbringer m’intrigue, me fascine.

Elric goes to his birthplace with some barbarians and wreaks havoc. This story shows its age: I liken it to the Conan the Barbarian short stories. Elric goes to rescue his sister-wife, but it's not romantic. He fights a castle, but it's not thrilling. I only give it 2 stars instead of 1 because of this story's legacy as an early story in the Multiverse, thus a reader might enjoy reading it just for that cool factor. It is sort of an exotic place and an exotic individual that we explore, so there's that.

The changes still play out the same way they did in the book—probably why they felt safe making them—but I wouldn’t have bothered, since, if anything, it took away from the emotions of the events, (in my humble opinion). Also, Stormbringer talks WAY too much (and it’s not even that much). The sword is supposed to mostly moan, groan, and occasionally sing—not have dialogue, lol. That’s probably just me grumbling about changes (it did grow on me… eventually). Still, it nails Moorcock’s tone and atmosphere while tossing in some new ideas—whether we needed them or not. Onward!

This is the nearest to the dark, conflicted vision of Elric of the books. It is not the same as the books, varying from them to do their own thing, which works splendidly. Obviously influenced by Druillet’s, Elric The Return to Melnibone, for a long time the most sought after Moorcock book, it has the same sense of edgy foreboding to its anti-hero protagonist. I hope there is more of these series as this is the graphic book Elric I’ve always wanted to read!

The French comics adaptation written by Julien Blondel, and since the second album co-written by Jean-Luc Cano, continues in this fourth volume, drawn by Julien Telo (who also most of the previous album), and picks up where Michael Moorcock's Elric Vol. 3: The White Wolf left off. In essence, this means that the team first turn to the final section of Moorcock's book The Sailor on the Seas of Fate – i.e. "Sailing to the Past" – before turning to Moorcock's long short story or novella, "The Dreaming City", in which Elric was first introduced back in 1961.

As with the preceding volumes, the adaptation is sometimes a bit loose, but stays true to the character and Moorcock's ideas, and it is very visually compelling.

All in all, I am looking forward to reading further volumes by Blondel and his compatriots.

Great artwork as usual...

To have the main cover draw by Mignola says a thing or two about this series.

Nice ending to the first story arc, but overall I wasn`t a big fan of the main "drama" of our (ex) king. But hey, we get what we can, so it will suffice for now.

Ps: The swarm creature was really majestic!!!

Super enjoyable read. I didn't find this novella to contain the same level of complexity that I found in the Elric of Melnibone novel, but that makes sense. This is Moorcock's first exploration into this delightfully strange and morbid fantasy world and it sets the stage very well for what's to come.

An adaptation of "Sailing to the Past" and "The Dreaming City". Blondel very nicely dovetails these two stories, making the one the obvious cause of the other, even though it was written a decade later. The result is nicely emotional, and there's again beautiful art, of course.
