Bee Cave Magic

Rate this book
Rex, the honey guy, is a big bear shifter I try to avoid like the plague. He’s pointlessly flirty with me whenever he sees me, and it makes me a jumpy wreck.
Why pointlessly? So glad you asked.
I’m a non-shifter, and he knows as well as I do that shifters and non-shifters should never date or fall in love. I accepted it a long time ago, and I wish he would, too.
I won’t even contemplate the horror of letting myself fall madly in love with him—and I would so fall immediately and madly in love with him—only to have him go dumb-struck in the middle of the street for someone else.
Because that would be pathetic.

Bee Cave Magic is a stand-alone shifter novella, first published in Virgin Shifters: Shifting for the First Time A Limited Collection. This 20k word novella contains surprise fated mates, size difference, and a Texas legend, complete with antlers.

By the way—a bear shifter selling honey in a place called Bee Cave is a little on the nose, no?
Just me?
Anyway, […]

You probably know this… I am such a fan of Kelly Fox books and her writing style and this was freaking adorable!! These two characters are hilarious and cute as hell. The whole story is, really. I really wished it would’ve been a full length novel but it was only 80 pages.

We have confident and sweet bear shifter Rex and adorably dorky assumably non-shifter Micah who had a crush on that bear shifter for ages. A sudden close proximity causes Micah to shift for the first time. Honestly this whole first-time-shifting for Micah is so damn hilarious - he has absolutely no clue and needs to learn everything. But when they share their magic its such a wonderful, mate-y thing, so so beautiful *heart-eye-emoji-face

Soooo…
If you are a Kelly Fox fan like me - this one’s for you.
If you like cute little shifter romances - this one’s for you.
If you’re a sucker for fated mates love stories - this one’s for you.
And if you also like funny banter and lighthearted, low-angst and low-drama sweetness - this one’s definitely for you! ♡

My only niggle is that I found the ending wrapped up a bit too quickly and I have a few unanswered questions but I guess this is due to the shortage of the story and couldn’t be helped.

side note: This cutest little shifter novella was part of an anthology at some point that is unfortunately no longer available. Pity, I would've loved to see what the other authors brought to the table of a book with the title "Virgin Shifters: Shifting for the First Time" *lolll

The bunny shifter thing didn't work for me.
I honestly didn't know it would be that kind of shifter because I wouldn't have picked it up.

That and it didn't hold my attention at all. For an 80 page novella... that's saying something.

My bad....

Bunny shifter is a new one for me.

This was ridiculous, but also pretty funny. Micah’s family was trash though, and he deserved so much better.

Overall, it was fine? Just not what I expected.

I need a full novel

This book was so fun and hysterical and sweet and sexy. I absolutely love Kelly’s new venture into magical/shifter worlds. I adore everything she writes but this new path is different fun and I am absolutely starving for more. Rex and Micah are precious and I just wanted more of them!

When I discovered Kelly Fox had shifter novellas I immediately went and downloaded the first one. Bee Cave Magic was an , fluffy, steamy shifter novella with fated mates, a bear of a bear shifter + a jackalope, and was just simply adorable.

Just what I needed right now. An adorable, sweet, cute, fluffy story with little angst. I started this and realized I've read this before, when, I'm not sure but I enjoyed the reread! I'm not sure why it's not on GoodReads as read before? I loved both MCs; they are cute together. I will read again!

Recommended reading for fans of Kelly Fox

As a fairly new fan of Kelly Fox, a friend recommended this little novella to me. I had asked for a book or short story about two guys who didn't have the stereotypical ripped Adonis bodies you see on just about every single romance book. Not looking for a huge investment my friend brought up this book.

Now I am already a fan of Fox's writing style and witty banter, so I knew as soon as Kelly was named I had to get this book.

A quick little read about a small southern town guy falling for another guy was all you needed to know. Add the dates mate shifter trope and I was like "it is gonna fit the need I asked for." I was pleasantly surprised by this little story.

Growing up in a small southern town as a gay guy myself, the dream of a big burly guy yearning for you for years is a dream most of us have had. Seeing the trope played out, albeit a little predictable, made for a nice little warm fuzzy feeling.

what clenched it for me as a five star read was probably the last 5 to 10 pages. The heartwarming truly happily ever after touch was super saccharine .... BUT SO WELL DONE!!!! There is nothing quite like having a sense of found family on top of be accepted by not only yourself but others... It was just really what I needed and I cannot recommend it enough.

so if you are looking for a shifter series with guys who are a little thick and juicy but so perfect together ... Give this a chance. You will not be surprised or disappointed

Fox is an author for whom I’ll read everything released, even romances tropes I don’t particularly prefer. However, I think the “fated mates” concept works better for a novella-length story than a full novel, so it was even easier to spend an hour with this delightful re-release, originally published before I was a fan of the writer. As usual, Fox’s ability to craft character blends with her genuine love of the physical setting to create a sweet shifter romance I couldn’t help but enjoy.

The tropes of instant love and fated mates don’t mean a story should be without conflict. Fox infuses plenty in her story without diminishing the overall sweet lightheartedness of this humorous piece. She leans into stereotypes to create the particular shifter characters here, especially Rex and Micah, while still presenting fully realized individuals with their own charms. A significant amount of subtle worldbuilding is also accomplished by learning what knowledge Micah lacks, which also connects our two heroes beyond what their magic has already determined.

This novella is far from the stories I particularly love from this author, but it still includes Fox’s trademark sass, charm, and unexpected romance. As a fantasy lover at heart, I’ve enjoyed all of Fox’s forays into the paranormal, and this one is no exception.

Bee Cave Magic

*******Spoiler Alert *******
I first read about this area in the Fated Mates Book which was the reason I wanted to find out more about the area.
I first meet Micah at a Smoker manning the barbecue for his family's place. Rex, his forever crush will be dropping honey by. He wants to be out. As he changes, Rex corners him, sees a different brand of honey and is completely hurt. Why? Because Rex has a huge crush on him since high school.
Micah breaks down. Rex is there to help. 2 times they have been super close today but when Micah got burnt opening car, Rex tries to help which sends him into a shift.
Turns out he is a pretty powerful Jackalope and that is after 2 days.
The one thing that really bothers me alot and I guess that is what the book is about, is that Micah 's family doesn't accept him on multiple levels. That he was originally a non-shifter, he was gay, and a vegetarian. They were all big backwards cats who don't understand society at all only what their rich little family does.
So happy for Micah that he has the chance to right some of the wrongs his family did and live a HEA while doing it with Rex!
If you get the chance to pick this up, do because it is truly an amazing read!

The good
+ Mutual crushing since high school
+ Both men have a body type that's not conventionally handsome (but they're very into each other!)
+ Their mating bond focuses on physical contact and cuddling instead of constant sex sex sex like many fated-mates books have
+ A bear shifter farming honey
+ Rex's family
+ Rex's endless patience in teaching Micah everything he doesn't know
+ Rex not giving a fuck about fated mates and wanting Micah anyway

The neutral
o
o Use of "bemused" as amused instead of confused

The bad
-

Overall, a really sweet novella. I would recommend this as a light and funny read when you need a quick jolt of good vibes.

Oh I loved this little story and need more from this universe.

Rex, a bear shifter & honey supplier touches the hand of his longtime crush Micah. Micah, a thought to be nonshifter from a family of shifters, avoids Rex because he's afraid he will fall immediately in love and then lose Rex when Rex's mate shows up. Micah has no idea that HE would end up being Rex's mate.

Micah broke my heart in all kinds of ways. Rex is the perfect mate for him, with the kindness and patience to undo all the damage Micah's parents managed to inflict.

I laughed so much at Micah's antics in animal form. Literally, I was I was crying, it was so funny. The screaming had me DEAD.

Again, if you like pnr stories, this little novella is top tier. And Kelly, if you're reading this, I'd read way more of these little shorties if you wrote them. In the Bee Cave universe AND the Orpheum Avenue Universe.

Girl, if you're writing it, I'm reading it.

Adorable shifter novella. Micah was brought up in a shifter community in a shifter family who refer to him as a dud because he doesn’t shift. He was raised to believe that he’d never have a mate since only shifters mate and that he was “less than” because of it. His years long crush on bear shifter, Rex forces him to do everything he can to avoid him.

When Rex helps Micah out of a jam, he discovers that he is indeed a shifter, he was just a late bloomer who needed the mate connection for his magic to show itself.

I HATED Micah’s family and the wY they treated him. I wish we could get more information on his mom, I think there might be an interesting story there.

Amazingly adorable

This novella had all the parts that I love most in a shifter book - fated mates, magic, adorable shifters and laugh out loud moments.
Micah is the odd one out in a family of shifters as the only one who isn't a shifter and that's why he avoids the gorgeous big bear shifter Rex. He just can't take it if they get together snd Rex finds his mate. But as it turns out Micah does have a shifted form snd he and Rex are mates.

I loved this short story and Rex and Micah are wonderful together. I had so much fun reading this book and Micahs shifter side is just adorable.

A rare story

This story is so short, it might not qualify as a novella. The characters are sweet, and there is lots of sex, thanks to the fated mate trope. I would love to read more about these characters!

But the best thing about this story? Shifters don't have hard bodies. Is this the first story I've read where a bear shifter doesn't have visible abs? Probably not, but it may be the first romance I've read where neither character has a perfect body. Personally, I find visible abdominal muscles a little disturbing. A person should have at least a little fat to be cuddly, and extra is better than not enough.

Cute!

This was an unheard of shifter story. I mean, I didn't even know jackalopes existed lol
It's a typical thing in stories were shifters and mating exist to create insta-love. But the author was kind enough to make the MCs have crushes on each other's for years before they even started "dating"/ realized they were meant to be.
There's not really a plot, but it is a very short story. It's just about who they are and how they come to find out that the person they'd liked forever, was meant to be their partner forever. Hashtag So Sweet.

Very Sweet

Very sweet novella. Micah’s family is straight garbage and I hate that there is no ‘payback’ really but that’s bc I’m super petty. He does show them up but it still breaks his heart which breaks my heart.

Rex is super amazing for Micah. Very patient and knowledgeable about shifters. They’ve both liked each-other FOREVER which makes it even cuter to me. Rex helps Micah stand on his own, not just taking over for him even though he is physically bigger and the ‘carnivore’ and more aggressive in his shifted form.

Loved it, worth the read!

Micah & Rex

For the love of shifters! I could’ve read a full length novel of these two. What a great story. Micah was referred to as a dud, he had a crush on Rex since high school. His family treats him as an outsider and he’s just moving along in life with no future. Rex has had a crush on Micah since high school but could never get closer due to Micah avoiding him at every turn. When they finally get their moment, the magic is so strong and it’s overwhelming and wonderful. Loved this story and how fierce Rex was at protecting Micah and teaching him how to use his magic.

The bear and the Jackalope

This was a cute little read and I loved every word. Micah’s family has treated him as less than for years and have kept him from really feeling like part of the community. But when he and Rex actually connect, he finds out that he really does have shifter magic. Rex is thrilled to realize that the guy he has had a crush on for years is his fated mate. Now he just has to help Micah believe how special he really is.

Just a bit of fun with an emotional core. I really enjoyed this! I liked how both characters had insecurities about their bodies, but it didn’t overwhelm the story. Micah learning about his magic and what he can do/feel was described really well . . . it was pretty fascinating, actually. And while it would have been nice for Micah’s family to be punished for how they treated him, I think having him out from under their thumb and with a group of people who appreciate him is enough.

Rec: Nah, there a better stories out there

There are plenty of people that love this book so I am obviously not the target audience. The plot here was very weak, the characters we very one dimensional and honestly the story did not really flow in a manner that made sense :/

Much like its protagonist, this story is small but mighty. It's romantic and sexy, heartbreaking at times, and really fucking funny.

This is not amazing. This is the dictionary definition of not amazing. This? Is Suck City. I thought being a dud was bad, but I was wrong. I’ll be the fucking laughingstock, even more than I already am. ‘Hey, there goes the totally made-up shifter. He’s a bunny, watch out for his antlers!’”

I feel like this should’ve been *more*

Because for real, you can’t just throw this stuff into a universe that has no hint of it and then expect me to just be all, “‘Kay.”

Because it sure ain’t ‘kay.

But the novella was cute and I enjoyed it. I just wish there was more to it and it tied into the damn universe better. I hope these characters show up someplace else in more than a random passing comment. They deserve some spotlight.

4/5.

Sweet, hot, and fulfilling!

Bee Cave Magic may be short, but it packs a punch. It's sweet, with all the heat and heart I have come to expect from Kelly Fox's books. Shifters aren't my first choice for romance, but I think I would read this author's grocery list and be entertained.
Just so precious!

Hilariously beautiful love story!

If you have an inhaler, you're gonna need it, from seriously laughing so hard you can't breathe. Serious and emotional, but hilarious. If you need a pick me up or something quick and light to read, then this is the book for you! This is a definite "to be reread" whenever I need a some fun and laughter.
