Sherri has returned to her passion of writing to indulge her own children's passions. A graphic designer, she lives in Chicago with her photographer husband, a cockapoo named Quincy, several fish, a few hermit crabs, an ever-changing array of insects in jars, toys in every corner, and two energetic and inquisitive young boys: one fascinated by bugs and magic and another obsessed with trucks and trains. She's constantly inspired -- and often exhausted! She created GOODNIGHT, GOODNIGHT, CONSTRUCTION SITE in hopes of happier bedtimes and sweet dreams for all.
This is Sherri's first book, and (just in case you think it can't happen!) it was picked from the slush pile.
Our household loves books about transportation! This is a great book to help little ones know about building a road. The last page about animals needing paths for traveling is a great addition to the book as well.

My least favorite of the series because there’s too much going on. This book tries to introduce 13 different trucks and their functions (compared to 5 trucks in the original book) so it ends up being wordy and rushed. Still cute.
I LOVE these illustrations, they are so pleasant! Love the new vehicles that came to help with this big project and the mix of male and female amongst them. Also the note at the end about road crews taking wildlife needs into account on projects. I had recently learned about wildlife bridges and seen videos of the animals that utilize it, so glad that was mentioned in this book.
“Rumbling, revving, shaking ground, all the trucks now gather ’round. They’ll make a route from here…to there with careful planning, thought, and care. The team will build it, load by load: A SUPERHIGHWAY, MEGA ROAD!”. In Sherri Duskey Rinker and AG Ford’s latest picture book, Construction Site: Road Crew, Coming Through!, the can-do, hardworking construction team meet up with a ”big road-building crew” for a ”giant job”: building a superhighway! With road crew friends like Scraper, Paver, and Water Truck joining Construction Site stalwarts like Dump Truck, Excavator, and Skid Steer, the teams join forces to get this big job done. Not just an absolute treat- visually and vocabulary-wise- for readers who simply cannot get enough construction and vehicle stories, Road Crew, Coming Through! is also a story packed with informational highlights showing a project start to finish. By following each construction and road crew member and showcasing their respective jobs, readers are invited to see the major steps involved in a big highway project. While the rhyming text runs on the longer side (it is text-heavy, especially if considering this for preschool and younger audience read aloud), Road Crew, Coming Through! is an all-around fantastic story. Duskey Rinker’s storytelling- bustling rhyming text, focused on teamwork, positivity, movement, and construction excitement- is as delightful as ever; and AG Ford’s illustrations are a dream- clean, vivid, and supremely appealing- just what readers have come to love so much (and immediately recognize) about the series! Readers who have loved previous titles in this series, or who enjoy books such as Little Blue TruckLeads the Way, Little Excavator, Smashy Town, or Sally Dutton and Brian Lovelock’s Roadwork, might especially adore Construction Site: Road Crew, Coming Through!. Back matter includes information for readers regarding the importance of wildlife crossings in road building.
I received a copy of this title courtesy of Raincoast Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and comments are my own.
CONSTRUCTION SITE: ROAD CREW, COMING THROUGH! is a delightful picture book about how a new road is constructed. It takes a large crew to make a new super-highway, but these vehicles are up to the task. Working hard, each truck has their job to do to ensure the road is completed correctly. The book takes us through each vehicle and their role in bringing the road to life.
What I loved: As part of a series, this is a book that will have high appeal for fans although it can certainly be read on its own. Some of the great things about this series are carried through to this book, including the rhyming text that rolls smoothly off the tongue, the adorable and detailed construction vehicles on each page, the focus on the jobs done by a wide variety of vehicles to create something together, and the ending where they complete the job and get to go to sleep, finishing with a goodnight that makes it work so well for bedtime. Children can really get an idea of the breadth of work that goes into creating the things they see everyday through this book, as well as the power of teamwork, where each vehicle has a role in creating something great. The detailed illustrations give children a lot to explore on each page, making this one they can enjoy flipping through on their own as well as reading with a caregiver.
The backmatter also includes an interesting note about road construction, in that builders are trying to be more mindful of animals and their migration patterns when putting in highways like this. The note gives children something to search for in the pages (a coyote) that elevates this read even beyond construction vehicles and their hard work!
Final verdict: A delightful new story in a great series, CONSTRUCTION SITE: ROAD CREW, COMING THROUGH! is a highly enjoyable picture book that takes readers on a rhyming journey through all the vehicles that work together to create a super highway!
Yet another gem in the enormously popular Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site series! This new story introduces seven new road-building trucks, and the prose follows the same familiar style and tone of the others in this series. It's just a fun book to read aloud to your children. I think that is a large part of what makes this so great: parents love it too!
There is an interesting element added here in this book: the acknowledgment that road building disrupts animal habitat. It's not inherent to the story or anything, but included as a note in the back of the book -- it asks if you noticed the coyote walking along the river, under the bridge. It notes that more and more, road design is taking into account animal travel and migration. I thought this was a nice added element for the older end of the age range.
Overall this is a nice addition to the adventures with the construction crew!
**Note: I was given a review copy of this book by Chronicle Kids. Opinions are my own.
“Six mighty friends are on their way / to help with something BIG today. / They’re off to work on something new . . . / to join the big ROAD-BUILDING crew! / (There’s a GIANT job to do!).” Excavator, Skid Steer, Dump Truck, Big Bulldozer, Cement Mixer, and Crane Truck team up with Compactor, Scraper, Grader, Roller, Striper, Water Truck, and Paver to build a “SUPERHIGHWAY, MEGA ROAD!” Illustrations, rendered in Neocolor wax oil crayons, show the visual story of highway construction—step-by-step—in double-page spreads, single pages, and panels that complement the rhyming text. Back matter discusses the need for planning for the movement of wildlife when designing human transportation routes. (PreK-Gr 2)
This is a great story to teach kids about how roads are built and what kinds of work trucks help with making new roads for cars to drive on. This book uses a lot of vocabulary and rhyming which is great for young students learning how to read and write. I love how vibrant and colorful the illustrations are in this book. The illustrations alone would definitely be intriguing to young children! I think that this book should have won a Caldecott Award because it not a only show cases rhyming, great illustrations, and new vocabulary words, but it talks about what the work trucks do and shows the landscape of where the story takes place. There are many elements you teach students and children from this book.
I loved the additional note at the end and the thoughtfulness of including this detail in the book. Thank you to Rinker for expanding readers' awareness. Another hit for the Construction Crew! I'm looking forward to reading this to Mister; he will probably know the names of all of the vehicles. I certainly did not, which made this a great learning opportunity for me.
The tone is so positive throughout, the rhymes flow well, and the anthropomorphism is charming. Why there is one page of truck sounds to interrupt the overall flow does not make any sense to me. This is my only quibble and it is a small one. If only our construction crews could build roads in such a lovely and quick manner!
Another title in the series of road construction equipment adventures by sherry Duskey Rinker. This time the crew is off to build a highway out of the city where a highway has never been built. Two things I especially liked in one of the early illustrations is a map/diagram of the highway they are going to build and in one illustration I spied a coyote walking under a recently constructed bridge where there is a recently constructed wildlife walkway. The author explains this rather new concept in highway construction in an added page of information. I enjoy Rinker’s good work in these construction equipment stories.
Do you have a little one that loves to watch the big machines at work? Then this is the book for you! The Construction Site vehicles are all hard at work - building a super-highway! Lots of great vocabulary in this one - from the machines that do the work to the different parts of the machines and the materials being used. If only highways were built as quickly in real life as the one in this book!
This children’s book is a darling story about a crew of construction vehicles who are building a highway from the ground up. The cadence of the story is well timed with a rhyming narrative that explains each vehicles role in the process of the build. As an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this charming story and loved the story’s wrap up and ending as well. Will definitely be reading more from this author again!
All of her books are awesome but somehow kindle has ruined this book. Normally the story appears on the illustrations and my kids love to see the story unfold. This book however has all of the words beneath the illustrations. Unless i am reading on a tablet the illustrations are small and my kids are unable to see them. Amazon please fix this!
The construction team meets up with some road building vehicles to build a super highway mega road! Or at least that’s what the book calls it.
The book introduced some new vehicles that aren’t anywhere else in the series such as graders, pavers, and stipe painters. This series can do no wrong in the eyes of my toddler.
Another great construction site book by Rinker. The kiddos I read to at the library really enjoyed learning how a big highway is made and all the work and vehicles it takes to do the work. A must read for those who love vehicles!!
We love this series about the construction site machines. David and I read the first one to Holden when he was just a baby and have been picking up the other books as they come out. Holden still loves all of the characters and was excited to get the latest book for Christmas!
you are probably soooo tired of reading goodnight construction site that you'll read anything else. . . but do you really want to teach your kid about buildign highways through otherwise beautiful open land? I made up my own story but its pretty hard to hide the message of the story. .
I have enjoyed all the construction site books with my kids and I really enjoyed this one! I love how it showed my kids the process of how roads are built and the trucks used! It seemed most relatable to them out of all the books.
This was our first “Construction Site” book and we’ve read it over and over again! We love these books and their sing-song rhythm! These are definitely a favorite at our house. But be careful, you can’t read just one! :)
Although I liked others in this series, this seemed to lack purpose. It represents building just for the sake of building; destroying more of God's creation in the name of progress, when really it just moves us backwards. My child did not like it, but for totally different reasons.
If you like Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, then you’ll love this. It maybe a little long for bedtime, so plan for that, but it’s worth it. Great illustrations and text! I loved the part at the end about how building intersects with habitat.
