I was excited about the setting and reading the basis of the storyline but I felt a little let down actually reading the book.

Well, this was quite possibly my darkest and most disturbing read of the year!

Hellsleigh follows two timelines (at first): the events on the night of the 100th anniversary of the Hellsleigh Massacre, and the fall-out of the day after. Investigative journalist, Malcolm, is attempting to find out why an inoffensive homeless man would suddenly push famous paranormal debunker Brendan Fiske off the roof of Hellsleigh asylum, which has been long abandoned and is due for demolition. Then they start bringing the body parts out.

In between Malcolm’s efforts to uncover the truth, we follow Brendan and his team as they start their own investigation of the allegedly-haunted building, and a group of university students looking to party… but none of them realise that the party is already underway and the hosts think that BYOB means Bring Your Own Barbed Wire.

Note: I never realised how many disgusting ways there are to maim and kill a person using nothing but razor wire and supernatural powers!

There are some elements of mystery here, as Malcolm and Brendan separately begin to piece together the terrible events in Hellsleigh asylum 100 years earlier, but it may already be too late for most of the hapless souls who find themselves unwilling participants in a horrifically gory torture play, and while answers may be forthcoming, mercy is in far shorter supply.

Anyone looking for a robustly shocking paranormal slaughter story should pick this up immediately and prepare for a scare. I am off now to give my brain a good bleaching then cleanse my palate with a sweet romance or ten. Dark doesn’t begin to cover this one… we’re talking Stuart Semple levels of darkness!

‘"I can’t say for sure, not without more information, but there’s something off about it. It seems reminiscent of The Hellsleigh Massacre, doesn’t it?” He’d shown Wells his research into the massacre back in the early 1900s.
“I don’t know. Refresh my memory. How many bodies were recovered then?”
“Seven patients were murdered by two psychiatric nurses, who then went on to murder the superintendent on duty that night. I can’t remember when it happened, exactly. I’ve still got my research, though, so it won’t be hard to find out.”
“So, what’re you thinking? Try and marry the two incidents together?”
“If these murders are what I think they are, I might be able to get an exclusive story. It could be big, Peter.” He loved making sensationalist comments to his boss. “Huge even.”'

– D.C. Brockwell, Hellsleigh

I read this book a year ago and wrote my review for this book straight after and have waited so long to share my thoughts with you! I am so glad that as part of SHOctober I finally get to!! These were and still are my thoughts!

I have to try and get my thoughts out because, to be honest, I don’t want any more dreams about this book. If this was a film it would be something I would go and see, I mean a film about a creepy and haunted asylum, what more do you want?

How about unsuspecting victims? How about a massacre that no one speaks about? How about a place that doesn’t forget? Or how about an anniversary and the spirits are here? If that wasn’t enough how about lots of sex, blood and a heck of a lot of gore! Enticed you yet to read this book.

My eyes were as big as saucers, my stomach churned, my jaw dropped and every sound I heard troubled me. Yup, I did the best thing you could do…I read the book at midnight in pitch black. A place where you can almost feel the darkness suffocating you. Hellsleigh will set your teeth on edge, all through the power of words. I am still so tightly coiled like a spring, and that’s not a good thing in this book. My brain can’t shut off from this book, the visceral descriptions that are laid out in front of you, stay with you.

4 friends getting drunk and high, 4 people investigating the history and a tramp, for one night they are linked… let’s just say, I am glad I am not one of them! The true story of the asylum needed to be told, people need to hear it, I just don’t want to investigate it. I would love to do a ghost walk, a bit like Most Haunted but to be honest, this book would put me off it. Plus with the atrocities that happen here, the blood, well I will never do it…..ever!! The crazy thing, this book is just one day and one night. The crap hits the fan, we have some preamble but that preamble still puts you on edge. It is relentless and I bloody loved it.

There is so much more to say, there really is. Duncan’s writing knows no bounds, the imagery is a dark and haunting one and when he goes dark and gruesome it’s dark!! Definitely do not read before you go to sleep, as you are never quite sure who or what is lurking in those shadows.

At the time of writing, this was my first book by Duncan and what an intro. He has written the type of horror book I didn’t know I needed, the type to give you nightmares and for me, that’s not easy at all! I mean I can’t shift the book out of my head! I think it is going to haunt me for a long time.

Now if you are looking for a spooky creepy book to read for this frightful month then look no further ! This is a fantastic, chilling story that definitely imprints into your mind.

This book has a storyline that will keep you hooked on it , if you want a story that will get your heart racing , get you desperate to find out what is going to happen to the characters, then this is the one. Incredibly well written, it keeps you hooked, it has plenty of questions running through your mind while you are reading it. It isn't like other horror books out there its unique in the way that it plays with the readers mind and plays out like a film as you read.

Now I don't want to say much about the storyline because I think I'll leave it to you to find out when you read it , I don't want to spoil any part of this book. All I will say is it might be best not to read it before you go to sleep otherwise it will haunt your dreams !

good story-bad editing

Really enjoyed the story line and all the characters and how in depth the descriptions were. But whoever edited and proof read this book needs to be fired! Some chapters are repeated over about 4/5 times before you get to the next chapter-and I mean word for word, which is annoying and time consuming when your enjoying the storyline and can’t wait to read what happens next. I can deal with a miss spelling or word, but repeating chapters making the book even longer to read is annoying.

Oh my!!

This book is full of suspense, gore & darkness.

This author is brilliant when it comes to writing a horror, it’s like watching a ‘Saw’ movie.

You really would be ‘dying too leave’ if you went into this Asylum.

A parapsychologist gets into a scuffle with a local tramp on the roof of a derelict hospital. They both fall down to their deaths, following which the police unearth more bodies from within the abandoned premises. Hellsleigh was formerly a mental asylum, infamous for its century-old history of two psychiatric nurses who went around killing patients. In later years the hospital was engulfed in a fire. And over time it earned its reputation of being haunted. What exactly is the story of Hellsleigh? Why do people associated with it die? Hellsleigh is an interesting supernatural thriller, that takes the reader on a ride through the history of its namesake hospital, as we attempt to solve the mystery of the deaths.

The back-and-forth narrative makes for an engaging reading experience. The novel begins with Dr. Fiske falling from the roof of Hellsleigh, and as the story progresses we move forward as well as backward, to uncover the mysterious events of the introduction – the ending leading to the beginning. We learn how each of the deceased came to be where they were ultimately found, or at least the parts of them that were identified. A team of paranormal investigators undertaking a non-commissioned project, a group of university students partying in a restricted area, a reporter having his research catch up with his reality – the sequence of timelines, events, characters keep the reader on edge.

Is there a more perfect setting for a horror story than an abandoned mental hospital. Hellingly Hospital is lying empty and a group of 4 paranormal investigators are going to spend the night there before its pulled down.

A group of young people want to have a good time and after being kicked out of their own party they decide to relocate to Hellingly hospital.

At first all is calm, but gradually strange things start to happen.  Strange changes in temperature, shadows, inexplicable events that cannot be explained away by the excess of drugs and alcohol.

A reporter is investigating the story at the same time, after seeing 2 people fall to their deaths from the roof with his own eyes. He's drawn into the story of what happened at the hospital in 1900 and wonders if the events are somehow linked.

The tension is gradually ramped up until you have to remind yourself to breathe. The story goes between the investigators, the young people and the reporter and gradually builds the picture. You have to decide whether you believe in the paranormal but I was convinced.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time and certainly of this genre. I had to take a while after I'd finished to allow my heart rate to slow down again. Knowing the hospital is real and seeing the photos adds to the creepiness factor.

For me a book is so exciting when you get different elements to a timeline. This book does exactly that taking you from 24 hours earlier to 14/15 hours later and so much more. I loved this it suited the plot so well and bought everything together and the twists that appeared literally came in at the most perfect points.

This was a different read for me again centralised around an asylum and there’s a lot of paranormal activities that take place pretty much from the moment you start reading the book. You don’t have to wait for long for this one to kick in at all. If you aren’t out off by reading detailed brutality this is definitely a good one for you.

I loved this as you got different groups of characters from different times and got a real insight to what happened to everyone. This gives it a bit of a mystery vibe until pieces start to get out together.

For a 100th anniversary since the original massacre you can only imagine what creeps up in this. Perfect for Halloween month. Reminded me of the return of Mike Myers a bit but probably only thinking about that because I watched it in the cinema yesterday.

Horror at its best! Gore, terrified characters, hauntings, abandoned insane asylum, hundred year anniversary of a gruesome massacre of patients and staff. You could not ask for more!
Dual timelines - 1909, original massacre covered up by the town council to retain the asylum's prestigious reputation; 2009 - teenagers take their party to the asylum while a renowned paranormal investigator infamous for debunking infamous haunted locations gathers his team for an epic investigation.
This plot was amazing - the incredible tie-ins from past to present, the ongoing revelations. I finished in day - I had to stay up to finish! I also live near the Inebriate Asylum - also used for the mentally ill and throwaway citizens. Just added to my enjoyment.

With Halloween coming close, I decided to take a look at ‘Hellsleigh” by D.C.Brockwell. The book is in the best tradition of horror stories, with a rich element of gross. The story is based in an abandoned mental hospital after it was the scene of a terrible massacre of patients and staff. Looking for “chills and thrills” four teenagers arrive, unknowingly, on the 100th anniversary of the massacre. They get more than their share of ghouls and spooks. Also present, in another part of the hospital are two couples who look into so-called paranormal phenomena.
What happens that night?
Read, if you are a fan of horror.

The book begins with reporter, Malcolm, attending an incident at an old, derelict asylum. It is soon apparent that something astounding has occurred as many body bags are brought out, some smaller than others. This is a particularly gory book with an intricate and well written storyline. The lives of several people are woven together quite cleverly which results in a book you can't out down. Once you do, I bet you sleep with one eye open!

great story needs beta readers

The story was awesome, great characters and highly entertaining but there were a bunch of grammatical errors and a couple instances where chapters were repeated, one chapter was repeated at least three times in a row. A beta reader would have been an asset for this author because they could’ve caught all these things before publishing and the story would’ve been an easy 5 star.

Virtually unreadable

The main story is a mesh of cheesy haunted house meets aroused teenage boys sordid dreams. I thought it odd one chapter was duplicated, even odder when another chapter was duplicated five times!!!! Zero proof reading. I was skipping sections that are cringy, boring or duplicated which turned out to be a fair amount. I do believe there's the bones of a story there. It's just been well buried like most of the characters.

Weirdly smutty in ways that felt gratuitous and icky, the scares got half the attention from the author that the B plots about strip-themed card games and other teenage clichés got. I stopped reading two thirds of the way in (Apologies if the last third is what really seals it as a good book given there's so many positive reviews). The grammar is rather frustrating too.

Hellsleigh has been derelict for 30 years. When seven bodies are recovered from the former asylum, it’s soon realised that it’s 100 years exactly since the Hellsleigh Massacre.

This book has different timelines but doesn’t affect the reading of it. Talk about non stop action! This book is exceptionally dark and gory! Perfect for ShOctober.

I have read countless horror books and I'm not easily spooked but HellSleigh has given me the hebejebes!
There are parts in this book that if it was a movie I would hidden under a blanket until I felt safe to come out.
Duncan has written a masterpiece of horror and I know this book is going to haunt my dreams for a very long time.
In 1909 there was a massacre at Hellingly hospital which included the superintendent, two nurses and serveral patients.
All but two of them were brutally murdered in the most horrific way. The other two fell to there deaths.
But what really happened on the 2nd July 1909?
Fast forward one hundred years and Brandon Fiske with his wife and two assistants want to find out exactly what happened and want to record the events for there paranormal TV show but they were not expecting 4 very horny stoned and drunk teenagers to be in the building with them.

This has everything that you could possibly want in a horror book.
Gore..lots of it. Scary bad ass ghosts.....sex...drugs...but certainly no rock n roll!
I could praise this book all day its absolutely fantastic.

I am back with another review. I have read a book from this author before which I enjoyed so I was super excited to see this author take part in this tour.

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a lot of American Horror Story Asylum vibes which I was loving. The opening of this story really intrigued me. I started this while in the waiting room of the doctors and almost missed being called as I was so absorbed into the story right from the beginning.

This story ends up being very creepy, very gory and I loved every second of it. Hellsleigh is set in an Asylum for the most part of this book. The start of this book started at the end so you know how it ends kind of and then we are thrown back in time to figure out who the key players are, why they are where they are and what actually happened which lead to the opening of the book.

This was such a fun ride of a book and again I look forward to reading more from this author.

Hellsleigh is a no holds barred read, which grabs you by the throat, gives you a bloody good shake and doesn't let you go as it drags you kicking and screaming through an absolute joy of a read. Dark and very disturbing, Hellsleigh is not for the faint of heart, but so worth it!!
