Bestiary #1

Bestiary: Slice of Life Fantasy for Men

Rate this book
Siege the castle? Not my style. Save the world? Never gonna happen. Create a bestiary business with a group of beautiful yet contrasting women? Now that’s more like it!

One minute I’m in a tree, pointing my camera at a tiger, the next I’m on my back in a medieval fantasy world, while a skittish blonde hovers over me, hoping I’m not dead.

I’ve never felt more alive.

Because although the dutiful smith’s assistant warns me away from the town’s sinful witch, I still have to go. The witch has the only bestiary book in town, and that’s my one hope of a comfortable life—I don’t feel like donning knight's armor.

Turns out, the bestiary is terrible—it's just primitive drawings, annotated by the tall tales of drunken adventurers. I know an opportunity when I see one. It’s a good thing I’ve been transported here with my camera.

If only I knew someone with magic powers, able to transfer film to parchment. Someone like the witch, currently scowling at me. How will she look when I turn her house into a walk-in bestiary?

And how about a scribe to pen beautiful prose beside the photos? The shy smith’s assistant wrote some incredible weaponry advertisements. I can find a few better uses for her.

It’s a shame the girls dislike each other. I’m gonna have to show them they’re more similar than they know. For starters, they’ve both taken a liking to me, and I don’t feel like choosing.

Warning, this novel contains an unconventional relationship and adult situations, involving:

A shy smith’s assistant with adorable blonde pigtails, who’s going to learn to speak up for herself.
A snarky witch in a black dress, who’s going to learn to keep her mouth shut.
A vicious goblin, who's going to... you’ll just have to wait and see.

Audiobook review:
Imagine being reborn in another world and you are still a raging asshole that is arrogant, with abusive personalty with mild bigot like tendency. The MC, the crown jewel of the story that only cares about his family jewels and where to deposit it. With the personality of a 13 year old rapist with no self control that enjoys stepping into other people's lives and judging them based on his sense of morality that even people from Earth would define as psychopathic, manic and disturbing. Fit to anger for the most stupidest things and not realizing the brevity of the various dangers he always seem to step in.
An example; he pays goblins to ignore him and then calls them stupid when they do as they are paid to do so. Or insulting members of government/royalty without really realizing that they have the manpower and ability to hang the fool. This stem to his superiority into believing that he is the more modern and or civilized man in a medieval world. Therefore, he is separates himself to other people's rules and culture. What is even worse, he has the conviction and attitude of a 18th century European with a sense of "manifested destiny" over the other peoples and others that he sees them as savages. He belittles everyone, takes charge of situation and exasperate it; in a world where he is either uninformed or plainly ignorant because he thinks himself to be a big strong man with strong abs. All the while taking advantage of a situation and of naive girls during their moment vulnerability caused by his doing. There is no friendly and slow realization. Just a strong shove of his sensibility; followed by bedding them by domination. After which, his conquest and characters do a full 180. They become his thrall, waiting to be objectified at a moment's notice. I will admit, I am not a boy scout and I picked up a harem book for a reason. However, the way the MC does it so so sleazy that it would make a register sex offender proud. Every man is a perv but no man should want to be a king.
Here is the puzzling bit. For some reason, the world seems to revolve around him. As in, in every conflict and situation seem to go his way, no matter how much of a complete ASS he is. He only real concern seem to be on where he pops and pitches his tent. Heck, even other characters and even the book it self seem to talk about how the MC is ignorant and brash, yet he still come out of it all fine.
Here is the worse part. The story is actually pretty interesting. A character that has be isekai-ed , who wants the follow his dream to educated people on different beast and of other species. No going off to fight the dark lord, no saving the world, no looking for the the lost sword of destiny or artifact to stop the coming darkness. No, it about bring joy to people with amazing pictures and stories of their expedition. As the various character said, "no villagers leaves the villages". These types of stories are rare to say the least. Also, the setting and the other character were pretty okay as well.
That being said, while this book wasn't for me. It is for people who enjoy these types of fetishes. In fact, it says so on the cover. There is a reason why almost every other second the MC is walking around with an erection and daydreaming of sexually dominating women. This book does this because it caters to these special people. So if you are a 18th century white European who likes the idea of sleeping with the naive peasants and the neighboring savages, who you see them as pets, then yes. This book is for you. Great setting and story, just horrible MC; written by someone who I suspect, dreams of a simpler time. Like the 18 century.

Еротичните фантазии на, предполагам, позастаряващ чичка. Не особено добре написани и не особено вписващи се в моите представи за добра еротика.

Fairly well written, garbage MC

The premise is great, the characters are vibrant and have personality. The MC is just a dumpster fire that turns an otherwise excellent story into some 13 year olds self insert fantasy where he dominates all the women because they let him. Maybe that’s your bag, you do you, but I hard a hard time finishing this book because every chapter or so the MC would talk to the female characters in the same way a controlling abusive husband would and they love him for it.

Author must be too lazy to use google

I know this is a smut novel... But that is no excuse for being lazy or incompetent. Begining of the book describes the MC taking photos of a wild tiger. A simple scene that the author somehow managed to completely drop the ball on. From the camera, to the jungle, the tiger, the act of selling photography.... Literally all of it is way off base... Not even close. It just keeps on that way. Seriously, if you are going to write something you don't know anything about then at least take the time to Google some basic information.... This includes smut.

I enjoyed this story and the narration.

Unlike many haremlit stories, the MC of Bestiary isn’t a game-playing dweeb with a crappy job who’s transported into another world. MC Harry has quite a successful wilderness photography business, and is planning on creating his own company so he doesn’t have to answer to his current CEO or put up with the CEO’s imbecile son. And then, he’s killed by a tiger after protecting his pretty assistant Cassie.

He wakes in a strange, medieval world with magic and goblins. He first meets shy MC Holly, and later meets the sassy MC witch Piper, neither of whom like each other. Using the witch’s magic, Harry is able to bring his images of tigers (is 35mm film camera came with Harry to the new world) to parchment and villagers are amazed and willing to pay to see the photos.

So industrious Harry is able to start a photography business on his new world, with the help of Piper and later Holly. And yes, the girls do learn to appreciate each other!

This is a relatively slow moving slice of life fantasy story. MC Harry is adapting to life on this world, and while he is self-confident, he isn’t so OP that he doesn’t have to think his way out of situations. I like that the two girls initially were at odds with each other, and I enjoyed listening to the erotic scenes between everyone.

Narrator Tom North is new to me, and he has a strong British accent, but his melodious narration works well for the pace of the story. Narrator Faye Bishop is also new to me, and she does a terrific job delivering distinctive voices that are enjoyable to listen to.

Bestiary is a 4.5* audiobook for me; rounded up to 5*

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

My rating and my review was not in anyway affected by my having been provided a review copy.

This gets a 3 as it's not a complete disaster, but the MC is just so off-putting that I barely finished it. I sense that the author was trying to make him dominant without being a complete tool, but the tool comes out often enough that I can't excuse it even within this genre. I will NOT be reading the next one.

Rushed
DNF @ 20%

The setup is way to rushed. It's almost comical: the MC dies and wakes up in a new world, his thoughts aren't muddled, has no fear or confusion, and simply decides that his new life starts now. He meets people, judges them immediately, and then without any hiccups starts his work on the bestiary with a witch he just met. He doesn't question the magic the witch performs, heck, the witch doesn't even question how the camera works. Don't even get me started on the relationships, he converses a few lines with the witch and then in the very next scene they're already kissing and feeling each other up.

If the author can't be bothered with how they start a novel, I scarcely believe they'd care about it's middle or end.

An interesting new

For me this is a new author first time reading and he writes rather well in my opinion. I like the way he has two characters interacting and they seem real and genuine and the way they thinking act seems natural. This is a interesting take on a fantasy with some Harriman elements and I like the way the world has built and there's an evil that he has to overcome hope to learn more about what that is as time goes along. Well the only tough part is waiting another year for the second book that come out I really interested to see what happens next.

Well, there's no world-ending villain to be defeated, no earth-shattering event upcoming, just a guy that decides to make a new life in a new world. Harry decides that with his second life, he's going to do things his own way and make some money at the same time. It's a nice self-contained story but still leaves plenty of room for growth if the series does well. Looking forward to seeing more adventures with Harry and the ladies.

Very enjoyable book.

A nice story with no big baddie. The MC seems a little too aggressive and controlling at times, and then will think or say things sincerely that try to convey he is neither. It can be a little confusing, and takes the MC from being a fun, confident, character, into an unpredictable controlling person that seems to be on the edge of violence. I never felt comfortable with the MC, but enjoyed the story.

Interesting characters, childish MC

Very slow paced and enjoyable, but the MC is a bit of a narcissist. Literally screaming at figures of higher authority, he should face consequence, but never does. Also, he only wants the women he pulled together to fool around where he can watch, for his amusement only, but he wants them to care about each other. Right. As I said, childish. Decent story, well written, hope the lead grows up a bit next book. Give it a read!

A Bestiary is Only the Beginning

A photographer stripped from Earth and thrown into a strange world, Harry can only do what he knows best. Photography! Yet, a camera is unknown in a world of shields and swords. After meeting a beautiful Smiths assistant and a witch he has a way to show his photos, changing this new world.

Fun from open to close & I look forward to seeing Harry do more.

He died and started anew

Moderately paced stranger in a strange world fantasy, not a lot of back story on the MC. He could be any pompous guy with an I'm from the new world type attitude. What makes this storyline interesting is the building of a business vice becoming a soldier or the chosen one.

I was hoping for something more based in the nature of monsters and or monster girls, is written decently but this is clearly more akin to immature wish fulfilment and not to be included in critical thinking

If you enjoy horny people being horny and man thinking with his dick give it a read

I’m going to try the next two books and see if any actual plot comes in.

I don't understand how this got such high rating. Story is disjointed and really doesn't flow well and many things make no sense. This book is in need of a series re-edit. I was not expecting a masterpiece but the writing is extemely poor. If you want a simliar type of books which are better written look up William D. Arand.

Another great book

Nice premise on this genre with a slightly different twist. But that twist definitely makes this a great read and one to watch. Definitely looking forward to the next one.

A unique and intriguing concept

A fascinating and intriguing read with a unique and different take on the idea of being reborn in another world.

Characters are fun and interesting, so are the antics they get up to that just have me glued to the page.

Nice to see not a video game

A confident man is reborn rescuing ladies as he goes. He didn't know he would have a goblin permanently! Be interesting the next few beasts to be photographed.

This is interesting.

I enjoyed reading this book for the most part. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. However, it could have used more proof reading. Lots of errors. This book deserves a chance.

Brilliant

A wonderful spin on the displaced in time and space idea. Fun tale of people getting to know each other, a bit of adventure and spice. I am looking forward to the next book! You should read this!

The story is about a piece of trash

I truly came to hate the story the MC was egotistical ass who lets his pride and lust controll his thoughts on things. The story makes every other man some an idiot, pervert, or evil that the MC has to act like he’s there better then the female chacthers are like lustfull harlots out on the prowl for the D.

I liked it, but.....

The title is what drew me towards this book, but the beginning of it was so slow that I found it difficult to just sit down and really read it
