Now that Yori has won Himari's heart and they're officially going out, it seems like everything should be easier. Being girlfriends brings its own questions, though—including what to do on their dates now that they're actually dating! Yori wonders if it's enough to do "normal" things, and Himari wonders if Yori still feels the same way she did before they started dating. Romance isn't the only thing in their lives, either. Auditions are being held to see who will get to perform at the upcoming culture fest, and one of the other acts has a history with SSGIRLS!

There are two storylines running in this volume. First is Himari and Yori, now officially a couple, trying to figure out what being a "couple" means and how being "girlfriends" is any different from when they were just friends competing for love. The second is a rival band... or should I say villains, because wow Shiho is kind of a monster- she's friends with Himari, a rival of sorts to Yori and Aki, and a perfectionist who wants to come out on top. Sure Aki wants to compete with Himari over Yori's love, but now we have someone who can compete with them musically as an external force!
I feel like in so many romances, the falling in love is the big climactic finale. Protagonists might spend the whole series crushing on each other, realizing their feelings, falling in love... and then at the end they kiss and have their happily ever after moment. I was worried what would happen to this series now that Himari and Yori are a couple, and it's not about making each other fall in love but actually being a couple. We get a bit of that, with the duo being an odd couple and working through that, but Eku Takeshima smartly introduces an external force that challenges the new status quo.
The art continues to be adorable and jaw-dropping. I love everything about Himari's expressions, and how she can transform into half-animal whenever she's really excited. Aki's on the cover of this volume and she was the real star of the chapters included here, from her complex heartbreak in interacting with Yori to the range of love, anger, and fear whenever Shiho is around. She doesn't get as cutesy as all the Himari/Yori moments, but her range of emotions are so much more complex than all the other characters. I'm invested in the Himari/Yori relationship, but even more I'm invested in wherever Aki's story is going.

Once again, after a year or two away from a story, I can't remember half of what's going on. It's okay, it isn't like this is full of political complexities or anything, and it was easy to catch back up.
Yori and Himari are mostly enjoying the initial stages of their dating relationship, and minor misunderstandings are cleared up by talking with each other. It's really sweet. From what we've seen so far, I don't think things are going to get super spicy in this manga, but I can see a thorny road ahead whenever things might go beyond dates in town, hand-holding, and innocent kisses.
I'm enjoying the little dramas between the band members and am interested in seeing how the tryout results and culture festival play out. Shiina seems like a character whose competitive drive alienates a lot of people around her. The destiny of a Type A... even though I'm a type B, myself, the storytelling makes it easy to sympathize with her.

Charming, but ended up more of a transition volume as we see the characters start to cope with dating.
I liked the addition of the rival singer and the rival group, it brings promise of more sapphic pairings to liven up the story and add different kinds of drama as the two leads navigate establishing themselves as a couple.
If you are into anime/manga and want a sapphic option I would highly recommend.

i swear i’m in love with aki. i must say, i ship(ped) her with yori... but maybe i just like the storylines that revolve around her. so i’m curious to know how the story with shiho will continue.

At some point I’ll write a more long form review of the series but for now here are my thoughts up to this point:
- Best artwork I’ve seen in a manga especially when it comes to shading
- Despite its exaggerated presentation it has one of the most relatable and grounded takes on romance I’ve ever seen
- This is the best use of a love triangle I’ve ever seen
- The way it depicts the initial lopsided nature of feelings in a new relationship is strikingly accurate
- The way it depicts the consistent overthinking and self doubt that both people feel early on in a relationship is painfully real
- I’ve never been able to connect with as many thoughts and events in a romance story as I have with this one to the point where I have, at numerous points, felt simultaneously stressed and shocked because they depict something that I’ve actually gone through myself.
Anyway, more to come in a formal review once I actually catch up to the most recent volume.

Gosh, Shiho is so annoying...
I did love the "first date" though and that they talked about their misunderstandings afterwards. Healthy relationship ftw!
I believe Shiho will come around Yori at some point though, since she's already more or less friends with Himari. Don't really like the game she's playing, but it probably won't last that long. I have good faith in this manga series and the author!

3.5 stars. This is sweet with some lighter intrigue with a band competition with lower stakes. This is like a cozy romance with slice of life thrown in, too.

After one heck of a concert, Yori has finally won the heart of Himari and the two are a couple. Which doesn’t seem to have changed much, but they’re working on it. The school festival also approaches, however, which brings a problem from the past back to the present.
Did this series need to continue after the third volume? In one sense, no, hearts had been won, love songs had been whispered. But it did anyway and there’s no doubt in my mind that this was the right choice.
For one, this book tackles the truth that falling in love is one thing, but figuring out how to date can be hard. Yori and Himari clearly have no small amount of affection, but haven’t spent time in an actual date scenario. It’s the believable continuation of what happens once you work through the infatuation stage.
If you suspect that this might all be incredibly sweet, you’re mostly right. Most everything about this is adorable, especially as we see how Himari is quite mischievous about Yori’s feelings when she wants to be - their first kiss, well, it isn’t what you might expect.
There’s also a fairly traumatic date that reminds us how communication is pretty essential, but it’s a lesson the girls learn and no harm done. They’re a great pair and if this series doesn’t achieve much more than letting them date it’ll still be a winner to me.
But the other big push here involves, pardon the expression, band substances. With so many of them trying for the festival, auditions are on the menu, which means former band mate Shiho is here to cause some friction.
Shiho is a real piece of work - the kind of person who wants to do something properly and be the best or not do it at all. Needless to say this has caused friction with band mates both old and new (though then new ones seem able to put up with it), as she thinks berating people is the way to help them achieve greatness.
She’s the type who frequently says she doesn’t care about her old band mates but is constantly putting down their efforts. I am pretty sure there’s going to be a redemption arc, but it’ll have to be pretty good with the way she acts.
Of course, she’s also in the home ec club and even her frosty nature melts in the face of Himari’s blinding cuteness for a brief second, which does make me wonder where this is all going.
Given her obsession with being a better singer than Yori, which we learn is actually pretty much the case, I do smell a band competition coming and possibly for the heart of Himari (I do think this book isn’t quite as poorly considered to make this a bet without Himari’s input, but the thought did occur to me…).
Which all leaves poor Aki caught in the crossfire, as she was the one who helped usher Shiho out of the band and even though she accepts how crazy Yori and Himari are for one another, you don’t get to turn affection off like flicking a switch. Given how Aki started as a well-intentioned (sort of) rival, it’s great to see the book expanding on her. I still think there’s more here than we’re being told.
It is a different kind of conflict for this series and I do like it, much as Shiho has her reasons but is very easily dislikable. It’s all played with a believably high school level of import, which is to say that this is clearly the most dynamic and important conflict in the history of modern warfare.
And, by and large, it works. If it was just this conflict it wouldn’t, but the sour here blends really well with the sweet of the romance. Yori’s incredible suite of reactions to having a girlfriend are delightful throughout (although we sure do have one of those super accepting schools that I don’t think exists, but this series isn’t about that sort of conflict). Maybe Himari’s dog morphing is rubbing off on her.
If there’s a weakness to this volume for me, it’s how incredibly intertwined everybody suddenly is. Besides the sudden appearance of all these new band people, there’s also the revelation that Momo from the home ec club is in the rival band.
The author tries to swerve around this, but it does feel for all the world like this series is now going past its initial intended run and that means dropping in all this new material. It isn’t bad, but it is super obvious.
4 stars - this is a top-tier yuri series and it only got sweeter and more fun with the dating issue resolved. There’s a lot going on and I’m not upset that we get however many more volumes with these characters exploring these new conflicts.

Gosh its so cutee but i despise Shiho so badd, even tho she's a great way to build a conflict and give some characters development, it didnt had to be done LIKE THATT GOSH IT WAS SUPPOSTED TO BE A CUTIE MANGA BUT ITS NOT A FLAW REALLY (but it was supposted to be cute..)

Ah! Damn cliffhanger! I really enjoy this though! Kino and Yori are adorable together. All the side characters are really great too. They fit so well, it makes you want to know more about their backgrounds. Also, I still want Aki to find her happiness and Shiho is totally jealous or crazy can't tell yet. Ha!

Things get heated between SSGirls and a rival band!
Kino and Yori go on their first "official" date, which doesn't go as planned. However, after some confusion, the two girls work it out. Meanwhile, at the upcoming cultural festival, so many bands applied to play that there's going be a talent event to pick the best acts. We also see that the lead of another group, who used to be lead for SSGirls, has a serious beef with Mizu, and after seeing that Yori has replaced the brat in question, she decides to make Kino's life miserable. Meanwhile, over in the cooking club, it turns out the club leader, Momoka, is in the rival band! Then her band mates show up unexpectedly, and it's all Momo can do to keep her band mates from realizing that sweet little Yori is Kino's girlfriend! She also has to keep Yori in the dark about the rival band. Oh the tangled webs we weave! The former member of SSGirls is determined to ruin things for Mizu, even going so far after the talent contest to confronting Mizu about her secret crush on Yori! Yikes! I think the brat actually has a crush on Mizu, but can't ormore likely, won't admit it.

Ich bin weiterhin wirklich begeistert von dieser Reihe. Sie enttäuscht auch im vierten Band nicht und lässt nicht nach. Mir bleibt nur noch ein Kritikpunkt, den ich auch schon mal erwähnt habe: ich finde es seltsam, dass Jungen und Männer gar keine Rolle spielen.
Besonders schön fand ich das Date in Kapitel 19. Dabei ist ein Konflikt entstanden und besonders Himari hat eine außergewöhnliche Reife und Vernunft bewiesen, als sie ihn angesprochen hat. So etwas sieht man selten in Romanzen und zeigt, wie eine gesunde Beziehung funktionieren kann.
Dieser Band wirft mehrere Fragen auf, weshalb ich besonders gespannt auf die Fortsetzung bin. Ich finde es auch toll, dass Sweet Explosion nun Konkurrenz bekommen hat und bin demnach auch gespannt auf die Entwicklung der Band.
Es bleibt also weiterhin spannend!

What a great start to the actual romance! These two are so cute together!
This volume has really proved it's worth as a very good yuri. The romance and music aspect work well together, with both being fun to read. I do wish they added more depth to the music part. A nitpick is that they don't write lyrics to the song performances.
The basic 3 act structure works really well here. There's good set up, fun/engaging middle, and a cute little ending for each chapter. It makes it feel like there is real effort put into this little comic.
I like the characters in this story, because they aren't one note. And that works really well with the romance. Yori appears confident but when she starts dating Himari, it's revealed it's mostly a persona. Himari isn't just a standard bubbly girl, she's a bit selfish with dating Yori.
