During a rugby practice, Easton Santiago is tackled by the revelation that he and his teammate are dating the same man. Confronting his boyfriend’s deception also forces him to face the feelings he’s refused to acknowledge for his teammate, Kade.

Kade March is furious to learn that the man he’s been dating for three weeks has been using him to cheat on Easton, one of Kade’s favorite people. Being hurt is one thing, but someone hurting Easton is something Kade won’t allow. He cares too much, too deeply, and can’t deny it any longer.

Mutually breaking up with their cheating ex bonds them and sets them free to explore the allure of each other. But Easton’s been burned one time too many, and Kade’s self-doubts run deep. One touch, one admission, one kiss, sets off a chain reaction neither of them expected, and risks their friendship, their team, and how much they depend on each other.

Spiral is book #0.5 in the Love & Rugby series by Susan Scott Shelley and Chantal Mer. This is a very short prequel introducing this series. This is a MM, sports (rugby) romance.

Easton Santiago and Kade March have known each other for over a year, both playing on the same town Rugby team in Philadelphia. These two have led very different lives. Easton has always lived in Philly and is a scientist. Kade’s family moved frequently growing up and he’s done the same as an adult. Being in Philly is the first time he ever felt like staying put. He is a motorcycle mechanic.

These two were shocked to realize that they were both dating the same man, that he was using them to cheat on each other. They both ended that relationship immediately and finally admitted to each other that they were attracted to one another. They are both finally single at the same time and are finally able to explore the chemistry they share. But is it just a rebound? A one night stand? Or is it more?

This was a sweet, sexy little introduction to the men in this series. I enjoyed getting to know them. This was so short there really wasn’t much time to get to emotionally invested but it has me intrigued to see what comes next with book one, Spark, which is their friend, Mateo’s book. I can’t wait to start it.

🔵 Not rating it. DNF at 50% but then fast read until the end, skipped a few things.

Rugby is really a very small, miniscule part of this story. I expected a hot rugby short story, even if it's just a short novella, because - rugby.

It's really not a sports romance. It's not really hot. It didn't pull me in at all.

The writing is very proper and it doesn't invite you in, it presents this love story that's just sooo average, it doesn't offer you anything new or exciting, no magic.

I checked out the sex scenes and they weren't convincing either.

Won't continue with the series.

This is a very cute friends to lovers, I also kind of think Saxon James read this book and came up with The Revenge Agenda. Both MCs discover they have been dating the same guy and dumb him turning to each other since apparently, that's who they always wanted.

My brain isn't cooperating this afternoon, I'll be back later with a review. But I will say, this was a really sweet read and I'm excited for more books in this series- the guys are all great!

Easton and Kade are two friends on the same rec rugby team in Philly. After they find out they're dating the same guy and start to bond, they finally feel ready to explore their long held-back feelings for one another.

Kade and Easton have a long off-page friendship so to the reader the feelings feel a bit insta-lovey, but for them it's been a thing for a while. They easily fall into their connection with one another - once they've convinced themselves to go for it. It was a shorter novella so not much for me to say other than they were a cute couple!

I would say that this is more of an introduction into the series, future characters, and dynamics than anything. These are both new to me authors, and my only real complaint is that it was pretty obvious two different people wrote the chapters. And I won't lie, I did like one style more than the other. The series gives off very low angst, fun vibes, and I like that they have older MCs and some rugby rep.

Read if you like:

Short and sweet. Not a lot of character development but Kade and Easton were very likable and relatable and there was a good cast of side characters.
