Rate this book
Trying to carve a new career for herself at ‘The City Herald’ newspaper, journalist Ana Davenport is tasked with writing a trivial article about the local witches who live in the countryside. As she reluctantly takes the job, convinced her career is doomed to failure, she instead finds herself embarking on a thrilling quest with the charming occult historian, Ezra Sullivan.
The recent discovery of a mysterious witch box, found at the excavation of an ancient monument and burial ground, launches the pair on a journey of revelation, exposing the mysteries of the box, solving its hidden secrets, and uncovering magical relics.
Suddenly, Ana’s article has taken a ground-breaking new spin, but there is betrayal and danger ahead. Together, they soon find there is much more than meets the eye with their discovery, and when people who are connected to them and the excavation are brutally murdered, they must race to finish what they started before they become the murderers next victims.

I didn’t make it very far before I just couldn’t continue any further. It started with a stylistic annoyance where the author over-writes in both a show and tell way. So, for example, Ana arrives at a remote train station and we’re informed not only that nobody but her disembarks, but how to interpret that fact to draw the correct conclusion.

And the problem with this is that it pushed me out of the story enough that I started thinking about other things. Like how she had a two-hour train ride to get to what her paper will use as a “local story” about weirdos (because weirdos make the normal folk smile to know they aren’t so weird themselves—we’re told by the jaded jerk boss). That’s local? And Ana keeps being surprised by things like an old person walking with a cane and a door she “hadn’t noticed”. Which makes “investigative journalist” seem like a career mismatch.

I think my final straw came when she promised, without prompting, that she wouldn’t write anything the weirdos didn’t approve of. And she wasn’t even lying! I mean, so much for the story her boss sent her for. And so much for me being able to see Ana as any kind of journalist, let alone an investigative one.

And I don’t mean to imply that Ezra is any better, though honestly, I stopped before seeing much of him. He seems to have his brood on, so there’s that? I’m going to go with one star and admit that this is me being really picky. If you can just flow with this, my guess is that it’s an easy story to flow with. And the snark in me wants to say “yeah, because the author tells you not only what, but what to think about the what”. But I know some readers like that because it means they’re in synch with the author and receive exactly the story that’s being told. It's not for me, though.

I’m exceedingly confused by this book’s overall GR rating. This is… not a great read. 🤷‍♀️

The characters are flat, the plot is not super engaging, and the “twists” are too predictable. Reviewers are swooning over Ezra, but I found him about as attractive as wet lettuce. Ana is even worse, hell-bent on reacting to things in the worst possible way, every time.

I know I sound harsh, but this book could have used a hefty dose of careful development. Or at least some heavy editing. It’s like we got a poorly reviewed rough draft instead of the final publication.

Usually when I finish a book in less than 24 hours, it’s because I loved it. In this case… I just wanted to be done with it.

This book was better than I expected.

I like to read a lot about witches and the derivations of what they have represented over time. In this book, the author put together a bunch of true facts and manage to tell us a good story. I was surprised and I don't think the book can be considered adult, although the characters are.

Ana is a journalist looking for a sensational story and Ezra is a historian who focuses his research on the occult. When Ana's boss says she has to write a bizarre article by the end of the month, Ana decides to contact Ezra's mother who owns a mystical shop. There she meets Ezra and together they start a small adventure to look for three artifacts that belong to a witches box.

There are romantic moments, but I believe they were not enough. Ezra is Ana's opposite, but the two make a perfect match. I am sad that the author has not explored more the relationship between the two.

Anyway, I found the plot super interesting, the way the story developed. Although yes, there were some parts in there where the characters were kinda dumb. Especially Ana, who often gave the impression of an innocent girl with always good intentions but do the worst of things after people tell her she should not do it or even Ezra, who often seemed to act without weighing the consequences of his actions.

4 stars tho. Cant wait for the second book

I love witches!

Fantasy set in the real world is one of my all time favourite genres, especially witches! I loved everything about this book. You get to see the characters evolve with every page you read, the beautiful Ana starts off somewhat timid before remembering she has a spine and Ezra goes from being a grump to a seriously hot nerd with a reckless streak (A nerd with a bad boy edge, what's not to love!) From the first line to last you can clearly see the scene Nikita has created, every image, every detail and scent captures and pulls you into the story along with the words she has wrote. The real life historical events woven into her world pull at your heart strings with the tragedy of the inquisitions.
Plot twists, mystery, murder, mayhem, happiness, joy, sadness, anger, betrayal and some moments that had me screaming "DON'T DO IT!" at my book. I've laughed, I've cried, sat on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding in my chest gasping in shock.
This may be her first published novel, however it is far from the last and I for one cannot wait for more of this story. Congratulations Nikita xx

Re:read: GAH THIS WAS BETTER THAN I REMEMBER!!Ana and Ezra are my OTPs forever. 5 most deserving stars!!!

Original Review:

Woah, this was amazing! Such a fast-paced read. I must say, I haven’t been this excited about a book for a while.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Ezra and Ana. I absolutely cannot wait for the second instalment.

Also, the author’s note at the end made this book so much more meaningful, this book is my newfound gem 😍❤️

This reads like a cheap corner-store romance. The plot is boring and lacks depths, the characters are flat. I wanted to stop on multiple occasions but the goodreads reading goal runs close :^.

This was everything I wanted “The Lost Apothecary “ to be. It had such good descriptions and a unique story, that this book is honestly criminally underrated.

Please anyone, who is interested in a historical mysterious witch story, PICK THIS UP!! you will not regret it!

✨✨✨

I started reading this book because of a recommendation on Twitter and I saw the cover and thought: this is my kind of book. Well, in the end it could be...if it was well executed.
For starters, when I read the synopsis I was very excited and I really wanted to read this book. When I finally started reading it (because I was having a hard time trying to get out of my literary hangover) I realized it was going to be kind of complicated.
I swear I don't know where the author got the idea of sticking a "magic" world in the middle of this book. I LOVE stories about magic and witchcraft, but the fact is, the way she wrote the story it was done in a very rotten way.
The prologue makes NO sense at all. Seriously, it's there to waste our time because it doesn't insert anything into the story and, to be honest, it just confused me as to what the book would talk about.
It's so pointless that there are witches and wizards and a girl is taken there to do a story about how weird they are (like that's super cool to do and like, seriously, did NO ONE KNOW THOUGHT THAT THAT IT COULD BE REAL????)
Not to mention that when she got there (to do a story basically humiliating people) Genevive (the woman who would be interviewed) out of the blue was like "ah, so, I know you're a total stranger and there's no reason for me to talk about my life to you, let alone to you who don't believe me and think this is all nonsense, but my son is working on his life's work and I'd think it'd be super cool if you got in the middle of it, how about that?", and I hated that.
Ezra (who is Genevive's son and the protagonist's love interest) is a cutie and I don't have much to say about him, but Ana? SHE IS A PAIN IN THE ASS.
From the beginning she annoyed me, but after Ezra's friend was murdered because she was working on this project with Ezra, Ana became INSUPPORTABLE. First of all, she got mad at him because he didn't want to continue the investigation (because they had to basically find some magical artifacts) because his best friend had LITERALLY DIED because of this job and she had the nerve to get mad at him and blame him and still get angry because she wouldn't be able to write her article (this girl is clueless). When this happened I swear I almost abandoned the book (I wish I had). After a while when things are going on she finds out that Ezra hates her dad because he stole the credits for a huge job and yet Ana was an idiot to basically tell him about all the research they were doing. And then when they could go to Ezra's dad for help and Ezra clearly tells her not to talk to his dad she does what? THAT'S IT! SHE TELLS HIS DAD THE WHOLE FUCKING STORY!
Then, after he finds out all the shit and tells her to go away she goes home and gets drunk and writes a fucking article humiliating him and his mum. The next day they meet up and everything is fine (which made me really angry) until he finds out about the article and the girl is acting like a child, like she's not guilty of anything and everything. I swear I didn't throw the book on the floor because I was reading on Kindle.
In the end we find out that the villain of the story (a villain who wanted to steal the things they were looking for) was none other than who? That's right: EZRA'S FATHER (seriously, I couldn't even imagine....)
After all the bullshit the girl ends up injured and ends up becoming one of the most powerful witches in the world because Ezra's father tried to kill her with the super powerful object that was Ezra's LIFE WORK and she ended up absorbing the power, and in the end she the author has the nerve to end the book with: "A magnitude of power... And now, she had all of it."
Anyway, I have so much more to say but I don't even know how to put it into words, just that I think this was one of the worst books I've read in my life.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This book was… eh. I liked this book a lot in the first half and then it went a little downhill from there. I found the FMC to be insufferable and annoying. She was so close minded and had a “woe is me” type attitude everytime she did something wrong and got called out. The MCM was okay. He was not the greatest but he had some charm. The book is definitely set up for another one to follow so it might be interesting to see where the story goes.

Amazing Read

This was definitely an epic read. As much as Ana was a complete skeptic of the entire idea of witches and magic. She followed Ezra with his search of these witch realted artifacts. This book has adventure, danger and friendship. Everything fortold in the tarot cards definitely can true. I honestly had an inkling of an idea that Alexander was going to be heavily involved somehow. Not the the way i was expecting. I cried towards the end. Thinking it was going to end horribly because of the cards. I really want more Ezra and Ana.

Over lockdown I have fallen in love with fantasy and I am so glad as its lead me to this book.

So easy to read and fast paced, also think we all fell in love with ezra also and it take a good author for you to connect to the characters so much.

Loved the story and I hope there more to come from ezra and Ana

Aaaaah! This book!
Okay so… a journalist searching for a story and an occult historian searching for old witch relics. The perfect team!
I must say this book was great.
At first I did. have some difficulties getting into reading it… BUT I’ve come to the conclusion that it was the circumstances in my life that made it so. Because when I actually finally gave myself time to get swept into the story i became addicted. A great story, with amazing plot and characters.
I personally loved how funny and charming Ezra and Ana’s relationship becomes. I definitely ship them.
The element of witch history also made it such an interesting book and one that I would definitely recommend if you want a book with witches.
And can we talk about the cover for a sec? It’s gorgeous! Just look at it. I must confess that the cover did make me want to read it even more.
And omg that ending! I can’t wait to see where the story will go next.
Okay so let me just tell you why you should read this: if you like, witches, magic, charming characters, mysteries, and a bit of betrayal/drama? Then you should definitely read this.

This book is absolutely amazing, I love it so much, it’s definitely one of my favourites! I’m a sucker for magic and it ticked all the boxes, the characters are amazing, the story is so brilliant that I literally felt like I couldn’t put the book down! My jaw dropped at the end where it said some of the stories Ezra told Ana, are actually true, my heart goes out to those who suffered back then and I thank you Nikita for sharing their story! I look forward to reading the sequel :)

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I stopped about 90 pages to read another book because I wasn't connecting with the writing or the story. When I picked it back up, the middle got me more into the story, but honestly the main character, Ana, was infuriating. I am not sure if I will continue the series or not. I have a strong like/dislike relationship with this book now.

This book was absolutely shockingly good. I wasn’t expecting much from this book, to be completely honest. But to my surprise, it was very good and has me excited to read the next book in the series. I won’t lie, Ana’s and Ezra’s characters did annoy me at certain points. But I enjoyed their characters more than I was turned away by them. The story line was very good, and the details were also very good. At times, I felt certain things were overly explained and not necessary. But it did give that imagery and world-building. I loved the adventures they went on together; I found those to be super captivating. The mom, aka Genevieve, was such a loving, cute, warm, and welcoming mother. And I loved how they captured celebrating the solstice. I also enjoyed how they touched on actual history and brought light to some of the tragic things that happened. The plot twist was definitely a shock, and I never saw it coming. The last three chapters definitely had me on the edge and extremely engaged to find out what happened. Overall, I think this was a good, cozy read.

I’m conflicted on this because although I really enjoyed the history of witchcraft and the witch trials, I honestly didn’t like the main couple together. Ana kept doing things behind Ezra’s back and then just crying about it when he found out. And then Ezra kept pushing her to be involved in the investigation even after there were people murdered. The mystery villain wasn’t too hard to figure out which I didn’t mind but the weak couple dynamic definitely took away from the overall plot.
Still tempted to read the second book to know what happens tho~

Just not written in a way I could vibe with, way too much detail in show and tell style, it was really pushed on you. It was incredibly predictable. While also being infuriating due to the FMC's terrible decisions and attitude, it was so frustrating how she would get upset after being caught being a terrible person and feeling sorry for herself. Have it an extra star because the actual witch history was very interesting and heartbreaking.
